Abstract:The past decade has seen tremendous demand for the production of new materials based on metal-containing macromolecules. Many research groups have dedicated their time and efforts to develop new transition metal-containing materials with biomedical applications. The introduction of transition metals to polymeric and dendrimeric materials gave rise to the production of many functional materials that continue to be examined for their activity. The biomedical activities of this class of materials have been the focus of attention as therapeutic agents for the treatment of many diseases, including cancer, as well as bacterial and viral infections. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In this review, a substantial section was devoted to the development of potential therapeutic agents based on metal-containing polymers or dendrimers, as well as metal nanoparticles. Their use as drug delivery systems in the treatment of cancer is also explained. Photoresponsive metallopolymers and dendrimers have seen remarkable interest in light of their role in photothermal and photodynamic therapy. Many studies showed the potential of this class in the treatment of cancer patients. Infectious diseases caused by microbial or viral infections have been examined by many research groups. This review highlights the development and examination of some examples of this class of macromolecules in combating these infectious diseases. The role of these transition metal-containing macromolecules in the production of reactive oxygen species is highlighted and their effectiveness has been demonstrated. This review also draws attention to some of the practical applications of utilizing these macromolecules as electrochemical biosensors and in bioimaging. This developing field has shown very promising results and there is a need to continue to examine new transition metal-containing macromolecules for their promising applications as biologically active materials. While the field of metal-containing macromolecules has been continually growing, this review is dedicated to highlighting the biomedical applications of transition metal-containing polymers and dendrimers in the treatment and detection of cancer and infectious diseases over the past decade.
