The Effect Evaluation and Teaching Model of Life Skill-based HIV/AIDS Education in Schools

Abstract:Objective To study the feasibility of life skill-based and participatory approached teaching models through evaluating the effect of HIV/AIDS education in schools.Methods Life skill-based HIV/AIDS education was piloted aong 462 students from eight secondary schools in Beijing and Xinxiang City,Henan Province during April to July,2004,and the evaluation effects were evaluated qith quatitive questionnaires and learning experience.(Results)(Before the education,) there was a significant difference on proportion of have learned HIV related knowledge in school between different grades and regions,the proportion of junior student(63.8%) was higher than that of senior students(52.5%),Xicheng of Beijing(80.6%) higher than Xinxiang,Henan(41.6%).The proportion of senior high students who had read some materials about sexual behaviors(34.9%) was higher than junior high students(11.4%).After the education,the correct answer rates for AIDS transmission routes,non transmission routes and how to prevent AIDS were 92.7%,93.2%～96.9% and 72.1%～95.9%,which increased from 70.3%,55.2%～83.5% and 72.7%～95.9%.Their attitudes towards HIV infectors and premarrital sexual behaviors also changed,the proportion of the students who were willing to study together with HIV infectors was increased from 32.8% to 58.9%.Conclusion Life skill-based HIV/AIDS education is effective in middle school,so it is worthy of being promoted,mean while,social and family should create sound atmosphere for juvenile's AIDS preveution.
