Abstract:The Weibull moduli were estimated for data produced by Monte Carlo simulations using two commonly used methods, the least square method and the maximum likelihood method. For a given sample size in the range from 5 to 30, a total of 100000 estimators were produced with each estimation method and then the empirical probability density functions (PDFs) and the empirical cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) for these estimators were constructed, respectively. By analyzing the PDFs, it was found that the estimated Weibull modulus, b, follows a logarithmic normal distribution. Based on the statistics theory, a simple method to determine the confidence intervals for b using the first two moments, i.e., the average value and the standard deviation, of lnb was proposed. The accuracy and the potential applicability of this method was also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper we demonstrate that an α-stable distribution is better fitted to Chinese stock return data in the Shanghai Composite Index and the Shenzhen Component Index than the classical Black–Scholes model. The sample quantile method developed by McCulloch [J.H. McCulloch, Simple consistent estimators of stable distribution parameters, Communications in Statistics-Simulation and Computation 15 (4) (1986) 1109–1136] is used to estimate the α-stable distribution for the Shanghai Composite Index and the Shenzhen Component Index. The empirical results show that the asymmetric leptokurtic features presented in the Shanghai Composite Index and Shenzhen Component Index returns can be captured by an α-stable law.

Abstract:This paper proposes a generalized class of difference-cum-exponential-type estimators for population mean under simple random sampling without replacement through known conventional and non-conventional auxiliary information. It is observed that some well-known estimators are the members of our proposed class. Moreover, proposed class of estimators behaves efficiently than competing estimators under some simple conditions. Theoretical findings are confirmed with numerical illustration by using six real-life datasets. In addition, Monte Carlo simulation study on four real populations also approved the potential of the proposed class against competing estimators.
Performance Comparison of New Generation Parameter Estimation Methods for Weibull Distribution to Compute Wind Energy Density

Abstract:To install a wind energy conversion system to a region, the wind speed characteristics of that region must be identified. The two-parameter Weibull distribution is highly efficient in modeling wind speed characteristics. In this study, the wind speed data of 32 cities in three different regions of Turkey have been comparatively analysed to estimate Weibull distribution function parameters by the use of three well-known methods (Graphical Method (GM), Maximum Likelihood Method (MLM), Justus Moment Method (JMM)) and three new parameter estimation methods (Energy Pattern Factor Method (EPFM), Wind Energy Intensification Method (WEIM), Power Density Method (PD)) which have been proposed in recent years. Three years of hourly wind speed data of the specified regions have been used. The performance metrics of these analyses have been compared using Wind Energy Error (WEE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Coefficient of Determination (R2). The results have shown that while the PD method has high model performance, the JMM is closely competitive with the MLM. Besides, the wind energy densities that were estimated by using actual data have been compared with the resulting Weibull distribution. It has been clear that the method that has the closest estimation to the actual values is the PD method.

Abstract:Wind speed statistics is generally modeled using the Weibull distribution. This distribution is convenient since it fully characterizes analytically with only two parameters (the shape and scale parameters) the shape of distribution and the different moments of the wind speed (mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis). This distribution is broadly used in the wind energy sector to produce maps of wind energy potential. However, the Weibull distribution is based on empirical rather than physical justification and might display strong limitations for its applications. The philosophy of this article is based on the modeling of the wind components instead of the wind speed itself. This provides more physical insights on the validity domain of the Weibull distribution as a possible relevant model for wind statistics and the quantification of the error made by using such a distribution. We thereby propose alternative expressions of more suited wind speed distribution.

Abstract:Weibull distribution is a convenient and flexible model for new product trial calibration and forecasting, however, the impacts of 'never triers' and heterogeneity in consumers are largely neglected in previous studies. In this study, we extend Weibull model by incorporating these two impacts, and make an empirical comparison across Weibull and its extended models. The results reveal that calibration and forecasting accuracy of the extended models are significant improved.

Abstract:12 cases of measured data of subsurface settlement induced by shield tunnel construction were collected. The change regularity about width coefficient i (z) of subsurface settlement trough with soil depth z was studied. It shows that (1) i (z) is smaller with the increased z; (2) power function relationship is existed in the ratio between i (z) /i (z = 0) and (1 - z/h) ( h is tunnel axis depth) in clayey soil, while the value of i (z) /i (z = 0) is linear with (1 - z/h) in sandy soil. Broader adaptability was obtained by modifying the formula of Jiang X L. A new empirical equation of i ( z) was advanced by regressive analysis. Both value ranges of empirical equation parameters were advanced by back analysis and comparison between the presented method and analytical solution. The analytical calculation shows that both formulas mentioned above not only are suitable for fitting measured data but also can be used for different soil conditions such as clayey soil and sandy soil.

Abstract:Due to the increased cost and reliability, only few life failure data can be gathered. Therefore, it is significant to improve the parameter estimation accuracy of Weibull distribution with small samples. In this study, a Weibull parameter estimation method based on hybrid gray genetic algorithm with modified maximum likelihood method (HGLM) is proposed. In the HGLM, the solution model for the location parameter is established by using gray genetic algorithm. On the basis of the location parameter, the shape and scale parameters are acquired with improved maximum likelihood method. Then, a full Monte-Carlo sampling simulation study is conducted to compare the parameter estimation accuracy and fitting of the HGLM with three existing methods. Results show the HGLM can accurately and stably estimate the Weibull parameters with small samples. Finally, two cases are analyzed to demonstrate the application of the HGLM method and the feasibility of sample expansion is also discussed.

A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON ROBUST M-ESTIMATION: FINITE SAMPLE THEORY AND APPLICATIONS TO DEPENDENCE-ADJUSTED MULTIPLE TESTING

Abstract:Heavy-tailed errors impair the accuracy of the least squares estimate, which can be spoiled by a single grossly outlying observation. As argued in the seminal work of Peter Huber in 1973 [Ann. Statist.1 (1973) 799-821], robust alternatives to the method of least squares are sorely needed. To achieve robustness against heavy-tailed sampling distributions, we revisit the Huber estimator from a new perspective by letting the tuning parameter involved diverge with the sample size. In this paper, we develop nonasymptotic concentration results for such an adaptive Huber estimator, namely, the Huber estimator with the tuning parameter adapted to sample size, dimension, and the variance of the noise. Specifically, we obtain a sub-Gaussian-type deviation inequality and a nonasymptotic Bahadur representation when noise variables only have finite second moments. The nonasymptotic results further yield two conventional normal approximation results that are of independent interest, the Berry-Esseen inequality and Cramér-type moderate deviation. As an important application to large-scale simultaneous inference, we apply these robust normal approximation results to analyze a dependence-adjusted multiple testing procedure for moderately heavy-tailed data. It is shown that the robust dependence-adjusted procedure asymptotically controls the overall false discovery proportion at the nominal level under mild moment conditions. Thorough numerical results on both simulated and real datasets are also provided to back up our theory.

Abstract:A three‐parameter Weibull small sample aggregation method is proposed to address the problem of small sample fatigue data in practical engineering. First, based on the empirical assumption that the shape parameter is a constant and data equivalent conversion and aggregation, the small sample fatigue life data are converted into "equivalent large samples." Second, through the linear relationship between logarithmic scale parameter and stress, an iterative procedure is established to estimate the scale parameters of small sample data. At the same time, the moment and rank estimation methods are used to solve the location parameters quickly. Finally, P–S–N curves with different survival rates are given, and a 7‐series aluminum alloy is selected to verify the correctness and reliability of the method proposed in this study. The results show that the predicted life obtained by the method still has high accuracy under a high survival rate, which can provide a theoretical basis for solving practical engineering problems.

Abstract:The mixture of two 2-parameter Weibull distributions (MixW), as a specialized variant of the mixture of Weibull distributions, serves as an ideal model for heterogeneous data sets within the realms of reliability studies and survival analysis. A principal challenge in dealing with MixW lies in the estimation of parameters. Inspired by the exemplary efficacy of the Quasi-Monte Carlo method in quantile estimation, this paper introduces an innovative approach, which employs the Harrell-Davis and three Sfakianakis and Verginis quantile estimators to enhance the representativeness of the sample, thereby improving the accuracy of parameter estimation. Given the difficulty in deriving analytical expressions for the parameters of MixW and their propensity for convergence to local maxima, this paper adopts the sequential number-theoretic (SNTO) algorithm for the numerical resolution of parameter estimation. The initial optimization region for SNTO is determined via the graphical method of the Weibull probability plot. Simulation studies have demonstrated that our proposed method significantly enhances estimation precision and reduces dependence on the "quality" of the sample. Furthermore, this methodology has been applied to two real data sets that demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

Inference of the Optimal Probability Distribution Model for Geotechnical Parameters by Using Weibull and NID Distributions

Abstract:To obtain the optimal probability distribution models of geotechnical parameters, the goodness of fit of the normal information diffusion (NID) distribution and Weibull distribution were investigated and compared for actual engineering samples and Monte Carlo (MC) simulated samples. Two datasets from actual engineering parameters (the strength of a rock mass and the average wind speed) were used to test the fitting abilities of these two distributions. The results show that the parameters of the NID distribution are easily estimated, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test results of the NID distribution are smaller than those of the Weibull distribution, and the NID distribution curves can perfectly reflect the stochastic volatility of geotechnical parameters with small sample sizes. The sample size effects on the fitting accuracy of the NID distribution and Weibull distribution were also investigated in this paper. Eight simulated samples with different sample sizes, namely, 15, 20, 30, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000, were produced by using the MC method based on two known Weibull distributions. The results show that with an increase in the sample size, the K-S test results of the NID distribution gradually decrease and tend to converge, while the chi-square test results of the NID distribution remain low and are always lower than those of the Weibull distribution. The cumulative probability values of the NID distribution are larger than those of the Weibull distribution and are always equal to 1.0000. Finally, the comparison of the fitting accuracy between the NID distribution and normalized Weibull distribution was also analyzed.

Methodology

Abstract:Gaussian functions are commonly used in different fields, many real signals can be modeled into such form. Research aiming to obtain a precise fitting result for these functions is very meaningful. This manuscript intends to introduce a new algorithm used to estimate the full parameters of the Gaussian-shaped function. It is basically a weighting method, starting from Caruana's method, while the selection of weighting factors is from the statistics view and based on the estimation of the confidence level for the samples. Tests designed for comparison with current similar methods have been conducted. The simulation results indicate a good performance for this new method, mainly in precision and robustness.
Sample size calculation based on discrete Weibull and zero-inflated discrete Weibull regression models

Abstract:In this paper, we present a sample size determination for count data based on discrete Weibull and zero-inflated discrete Weibull regression models. The discrete Weibull regression can be used under various dispersion of count data, but its attractive feature is not sufficiently revealed. Discrete Weibull regression has a desirable feature in that it can be used for both over and under dispersed data, and thus a researcher can use a unified model with having low risk of failing to cope with the dispersion type of the data. For illustration of our methods, the hospital length of stay study was used.

Abstract:We consider the estimation of the conditional tail moment at extreme levels for the class of Weibull‐type distributions. A two‐step procedure is introduced where in the first stage one estimates the conditional tail moment at an intermediate level, followed by an extrapolation in the second stage. The asymptotic properties of the estimators introduced in the two stages are derived under suitable assumptions. The finite sample properties of the proposed estimator are examined with a simulation experiment. We conclude with two applications on real life data: wind speed measurements collected at an offshore wind farm and PM2.5 air pollution data.

A Comparison of Two Random Number Generators for the Birnbaum–Saunders Distribution

Abstract:The Birnbaum–Saunders distribution was developed to describe fatigue failure lifetimes, however, the distribution has been shown to be applicable for a variety of situations that frequently occur in the engineering sciences. In general, the distribution can be used for situations that involve stochastic wear–out failure. The distribution does not have an exponential family structure, and it is often necessary to use simulation methods to study the properties of statistical inference procedures for this distribution. Two random number generators for the Birnbaum–Saunders distribution have appeared in the literature. The purpose of this article is to present and compare these two random number generators to determine which is more efficient. It is shown that one of these generators is a special case of the other and is simpler and more efficient to use.
The Efficiency of Normal Distribution in Statistical Characterization of the Experimentally Measured Strength for Ceramics

Abstract:It has been assumed that the measured strength of ceramics follows a Weibull distribution. However, there is still no sound evidence to confirm this assumption. On the contrary, some studies have shown that other distributions such as normal distribution may describe more appropriately the measured strength data than Weibull distribution. In this paper, an extensive comparison between the efficiencies of normal and Weibull distributions in describing the strength variations was performed based on the analyses of 27 strength datasets, each containing 30 data measured on different ceramics. It was shown based on Anderson–Darling (A–D) test that, in most cases, normal distribution may give a satisfactory description for the data. The analysis results reveal that, at least for the small datasets generally used in laboratory evaluation, it seems to be unnecessary to perform a Weibull analysis because a simple normal distribution analysis is accurate enough for the statistical characterization of strength for the examined materials.

Abstract:The Weibull algorithm is one of the most accurate tools for forecasting and estimating wind energy potential. Two main parameters of the Weibull algorithm are the 'Weibull shape' and 'Weibull scale' factors. There are six different numerical methods to estimate the two Weibull parameters. These six methods are the empirical method of Justus (method 1), the empirical method of Lysen (method 2), the maximum likelihood method (method 3), the modified maximum likelihood method (method 4), the energy pattern factor method (method 5) and the graphical method (method 6). Many commercial wind energy software programs use the Weibull algorithm, and these six methods are used to calculate the potential wind energy at a given site. However, their accuracy is rarely discussed, particularly regarding wind data height. For this purpose, wind data measured for a long period (six years) at real sites are introduced. The wind data sites are categorized into three levels, i.e., low, medium, and high, based on wind data measurement height. The analysis shows that methods 1 and 2 are the most accurate methods among all six methods at low and medium heights. The number of errors increases with the height of these two methods. Methods 3 and 4 are the most suitable options for larger heights, as these scenarios have minimal error. The present study's findings can be used in various fields, e.g., wind energy forecasting and wind farm planning.
