Abstract:The intestinal nerve of Remak (INR) is a unique avian ganglionated nerve trunk. In the current experiment, the INR was frozen and sectioned, and then the slices were stained with haematoxylin-eosin and toluidine blue, respectively. Conventional optical microscopy was used to observe the morphology of the neurons forming part of the INR. We counted the number of the neurons, measured the areas of the neural somas, and finally analyzed the data by the Statistic software of SPSS. The result showed that the ganglia of the INR contained abundant neuronal bodies, the total number of neurons in the whole INR was 31 821, and the juxta-rectum portion of INR had the most neurons, up to 27 109. The average area of the neuronal bodies in the juxta-jejunum portion of INR reached 478.46 μm2 and was largest in the whole INR, and the proportion of the larger neuron cells was also the highest in this region, But in the juxta-rectum portion of INR the average area of the neuronal bodies was 391.74 μm2 and was the smallest. We speculate that there are differences among different regions of INR in the shape, size, and quantity of neurons, and it is possible that a correlation exists between this differences and INR's role in the regulation of gut motility.
