Abstract:In this paper, we give a method to characterize graphs determined by their adjacency spectrum. At first, we give two parameters Π1(G) and Π2(G), which are related to coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of graph G. All connected graphs with Π1(G)∈{1,0,−1,−2,−3} and Π2(G)∈{0,−1,−2,−3} are characterized. Some interesting properties of Π1(G) and Π2(G) are also given. We then find the necessary and sufficient conditions for two classes of graphs to be determined by their adjacency spectrum.

Abstract:We consider the set Gn,k of graphs of order n with the chromatic number k≥2. In this note, we prove that in Gn,k the Turán graph Tn,k has the maximal spectral radius; and Pn if k=2, Cn if k=3 and n is odd, Cn−11 if k=3 and n is even, Kk(l) if k≥4 has the minimal spectral radius. Thus we answer a problem raised by Cao [D.S. Cao, Index function of graphs, J. East China Norm. Univ. Sci. Ed. 4 (1987) 1–8 (in Chinese). MR89m:05084] and Hong [Y. Hong, Bounds of eigenvalues of graphs, Discrete Math. 123 (1993) 65–74] in the affirmative.

Abstract:Let G be a graph with n vertices, let A(G) be an adjacency matrix of G and let P-A(G,lambda) be the characteristic polynomial of A(G). The adjacency spectrum of G consists of eigenvalues of A(G). A graph G is said to be determined by its adjacency spectrum (DS for short) if other graphs with the same adjacency spectrum as G are isomorphic to G. In this paper, we investigate the spectral characterization of unicycle graphs with only two vertices of degree three. We use G(21)(s(1),s(2)) to denote the graph obtained from Q(s(1),s(2)) by identifying its pendant vertex and the vertex of degree two of P-3, where Q(s(1),s(2)) is the graph obtained by identifying a vertex of C-s1 and a pendant vertex of P-s2. We use G(31)(t(1),t(2)) to denote the graph obtained from circle with the vertices v(0)v(1)...v(t1+t2+1) by adding one pendant edge at vertices v(0) and v(t1+1), respectively. It is shown that G(21)(s(1),s(2)) (s(1)not equal 4,6, s(1)>= 3, s(2)>= 3) and G(31)(t(1),t(2)) (t(1)+t(2)not equal 2, t(2)>= t(1)>= 1) are determined by their adjacency spectrum.

Abstract:We characterize when the spectral variation of the signed Laplacian matrices is integral after a new edge is added to a signed graph. As an application, for every fixed signed complete graph, we fully characterize the class of signed graphs to which one can recursively add new edges keeping spectral integral variation to make the signed complete graph.

Abstract:Nikiforov (2002) showed that if G is Kr+1-free then the spectral radius ρ(G)≤2m(1−1∕r), which implies that G contains C3 if ρ(G)>m. In this paper, we follow this direction in determining which subgraphs will be contained in G if ρ(G)>f(m), where f(m)∼m as m→∞. We first show that if ρ(G)≥m, then G contains K2,r+1 unless G is a star; and G contains either C3+ or C4+ unless G is a complete bipartite graph, where Ct+ denotes the graph obtained from Ct and C3 by identifying an edge. Secondly, we prove that if ρ(G)≥12+m−34, then G contains pentagon and hexagon unless G is a book; and if ρ(G)>12(k−12)+m+14(k−12)2, then G contains Ct for every t≤2k+2. In the end, some related conjectures are provided for further research.

Abstract:Nikiforov [Some inequalities for the largest eigenvalue of a graph, Combin. Probab. Comput. 179--189] showed that if $G$ is $K_{r+1}$-free then the spectral radius $\rho(G)\leq\sqrt{2m(1-1/r)}$, which implies that $G$ contains $C_3$ if $\rho(G)>\sqrt{m}$. In this paper, we follow this direction on determining which subgraphs will be contained in $G$ if $\rho(G)> f(m)$, where $f(m)\sim\sqrt{m}$ as $m\rightarrow \infty$. We first show that if $\rho(G)\geq \sqrt{m}$, then $G$ contains $K_{2,r+1}$ unless $G$ is a star; and $G$ contains either $C_3^+$ or $C_4^+$ unless $G$ is a complete bipartite graph, where $C_t^+$ denotes the graph obtained from $C_t$ and $C_3$ by identifying an edge. Secondly, we prove that if $\rho(G)\geq{\frac12+\sqrt{m-\frac34}}$, then $G$ contains pentagon and hexagon unless $G$ is a book; and if $\rho(G)>{\frac12(k-\frac12)+\sqrt{m+\frac14(k-\frac12)^2}}$, then $G$ contains $C_t$ for every $t\leq 2k+2$. In the end, some related conjectures are provided for further research.

Abstract:We consider nonregular graphs having precisely three distinct eigenvalues. The focus is mainly on the case of graphs having two distinct valencies and our results include constructions of new examples, structure theorems, valency constraints, and a classification of certain special families of such graphs. We also present a new example of a graph with three valencies and three eigenvalues of which there are currently only finitely many known examples.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a graph and let $\mathcal{B}_r(F)$ be the class of $r$-uniform Berge-$F$ hypergraphs. In this paper, by establishing a relationship between the spectral radius of the adjacency tensor of a uniform hypergraph and its local structure via walks, we give a spectral asymptotic bound for $\mathcal{B}_{r}(C_3)$-free linear $r$-uniform hypergraphs and upper bounds for the spectral radii of $\mathcal{B}_{r}(K_{2,t})$-free or $\{\mathcal{B}_{r}(K_{s,t}),\mathcal{B}_{r}(C_{3})\}$-free linear $r$-uniform hypergraphs, where $C_{3}$ and $K_{s,t}$ are respectively the triangle and the complete bipartite graph with one part having $s$ vertices and the other part having $t$ vertices. Our work implies an upper bound for the number of edges of $\{\mathcal{B}_{r}(K_{s,t}),\mathcal{B}_{r}(C_{3})\}$-free linear $r$-uniform hypergraphs, and extends some known work on (spectral) extreme problems of hypergraphs.

Integral invariants for framed 3-manifolds associated to trivalent graphs possibly with self-loops

Abstract:Bott--Cattaneo's theory defines the integral invariants for a framed rational homology 3-sphere equipped with an acyclic orthogonal local system, in terms of graph cocycles without self-loops. The 2-loop term of their invariants is associated with the theta graph. Their definition requires a cohomological condition. Cattaneo--Shimizu removed this cohomological condition and gave a 2-loop invariant associated with a linear combination of the theta graph and the dumbbell graph, the 2-loop trivalent graph with self-loops. In this paper, we are concerned with an acyclic local system given by the adjoint representation of a semi-simple Lie group composed with a representation of the fundamental group of a closed 3-manifold, and we show that through a cohomological construction eventually the integral associated with the dumbbell graph vanishes. Based on this idea, we construct a theory of graph complexes and cocycles, so that higher-loop invariants can be defined by two different but equivalent methods: the graph cocycles without self-loops as in Bott--Cattaneo's theory, and the ones with self-loops that extend Cattaneo--Shimizu's 2-loop invariants. As a consequence, we prove that the generating series of Chern--Simons perturbation theory gives rise to topological invariants for framed 3-manifolds in our setting, which admits a formula in terms of only trivalent graphs without self-loops.

Abstract:A graph G is F-free, if it contains no F as a subgraph. A Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type problem asks what is the maximum spectral radius of an F-free graph of order n? Let Ka,b•K3 denote the graph obtained by identifying a vertex of Ka,b belonging to the part of size b and a vertex of K3. In this paper, we consider about a Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type problem on non-bipartite graphs. We prove that if G is a non-bipartite graph with order n≥21 and ρ(G)≥ρ(K⌈n−22⌉,⌊n−22⌋•K3), then G contains a pentagon unless G≅K⌈n−22⌉,⌊n−22⌋•K3.

Abstract:We prove three conjectures regarding the maximization of spectral invariants over certain families of graphs. Our most difficult result is that the join of $P_2$ and $P_{n-2}$ is the unique graph of maximum spectral radius over all planar graphs. This was conjectured by Boots and Royle in 1991 and independently by Cao and Vince in 1993. Similarly, we prove a conjecture of Cvetković and Rowlinson from 1990 stating that the unique outerplanar graph of maximum spectral radius is the join of a vertex and $P_{n-1}$. Finally, we prove a conjecture of Aouchiche et al from 2008 stating that a pineapple graph is the unique connected graph maximizing the spectral radius minus the average degree. To prove our theorems, we use the leading eigenvector of a purported extremal graph to deduce structural properties about that graph. Using this setup, we give short proofs of several old results: Mantel's Theorem, Stanley's edge bound and extensions, the Kővari-Sós-Turán Theorem applied to $\mathrm{ex}\left(n, K_{2,t}\right)$, and a partial solution to an old problem of Erdős on making a triangle-free graph bipartite.

Graphs with three and four distinct eigenvalues based on circulants

Abstract:In this paper, we aim to address the open questions raised in various recent papers regarding characterization of circulant graphs with three or four distinct eigenvalues in their spectra. Our focus is on providing characterizations and constructing classes of graphs falling under this specific category. We present a characterization of circulant graphs with prime number order and unitary Cayley graphs with arbitrary order, both of which possess spectra displaying three or four distinct eigenvalues. Various constructions of circulant graphs with composite orders are provided whose spectra consist of four distinct eigenvalues. These constructions primarily utilize specific subgraphs of circulant graphs that already possess two or three eigenvalues in their spectra, employing graph operations like the tensor product, the union, and the complement. Finally, we characterize the iterated line graphs of unitary Cayley graphs whose spectra contain three or four distinct eigenvalues, and we show their non-circulant nature.

Spectral Turán problems for hypergraphs with bipartite or multipartite pattern

Abstract:General criteria on spectral extremal problems for hypergraphs were developed by Keevash, Lenz, and Mubayi in their seminal work (SIAM J. Discrete Math., 2014), in which extremal results on \alpha-spectral radius of hypergraphs for \alpha>1 may be deduced from the corresponding hypergraph Turán problem which has the stability property and whose extremal construction satisfies some continuity assumptions. Using this criterion, we give two general spectral Turán results for hypergraphs with bipartite or mulitpartite pattern, transform corresponding the spectral Turán problems into pure combinatorial problems with respect to degree-stability of a nondegenerate k-graph family. As an application, we determine the maximum \alpha-spectral radius for some classes of hypergraphs and characterize the corresponding extremal hypergraphs, such as the expansion of complete graphs, the generalized Fans, the cancellative hypergraphs, the generalized triangles, and a special book hypergraph.

Abstract:The spectral analogue of the Turán type problem for hypergraphs is to determine the maximum spectral radius for the hypergraphs of order $n$ that do not contain a given hypergraph. For the hypergraphs among the set of the connected linear $3$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices without the Berge-$C_l$, we present two upper bounds for their spectral radius and $\alpha$-spectral radius, which are related to $n$,$l$ and $\alpha$, where $C_l$ is a cycle of length $l$ with $l\geqslant 5$, $n\geqslant 3$ and $0 \leqslant \alpha<1$. Let $B_s$ be an $s$-book with $s\geqslant2$ and $K_{s,t}$ be a complete bipartite graph with two parts of size $s$ and $t$, respectively, where $s,t \geqslant 1$. For the hypergraphs among the set of the connected linear $k$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices without the Berge-$\{B_s, K_{2,t}\}$, we derive two upper bounds for their spectral radius and $\alpha$-spectral radius, which depend on $n$, $k$, $s$, and $\alpha$, where $n$,$k\geqslant 3$,$s\geqslant 2$,$1\leqslant t\leqslant \frac{1}{2}(6k^2-15k+10)(s-1)+1$, and $0\leqslant \alpha <1$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Hamiltonicity of graphs with large minimum degree. Firstly, we present some conditions for a simple graph to be Hamilton-connected and traceable from every vertex in terms of the spectral radius of the graph or its complement respectively. Secondly, we give the conditions for a nearly balanced bipartite graph to be traceable in terms of spectral radius, signless Laplacian spectral radius of the graph or its quasi-complement respectively.

Abstract:In this paper we study three families of graphs, one is the graphs of order n with connectivity κ(G)≤k and minimum degree δ(G)≥k. We show that among the graphs in this family, the maximum spectral radius is obtained uniquely at Kk+(Kδ−k+1∪Kn−δ−1). Another family of the graphs we study is the family of bipartite graphs with order n and connectivity k. We show that among the graphs in this family the maximum spectral radius is obtained at a graph modified from K⌊n/2⌋,n−1−⌊n/2⌋. The third family of graphs we have studied is the family of graphs with order n, connectivity k and independence number r. We determine the graphs in this family that have the maximum spectral radius.
