Abstract:R.H.Tawney,the author of Religion and the Rise of Capitalism, makes a denunciation of capitalism much stronger than what Max Weber does in The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. While Weber is not unaware of the defects of modern industrialism but keeps his criticism muted and indirect,Tawney depicts the capitalist society as violating human dignity and obsessed with acquisitiveness of material wealth. It is also divided into classes which are regarded as instruments and classes which uses others as their instruments to acquire riches.According to Tawney, education is a crucial link in achieving equality in social and economic relations, and inequality in education will perpetuate the tyrannical rule of the privileged classes."To sell education for money is the next thing to selling the gifts of God for money." In refuting Frederich Hayek's anti-socialist book,The Road to Serfdom,Tawney argues convincingly that it is greed embedded in capitalism that enslaves people and even degrades professionals and intellectuals.
