Abstract:Objective To discuss the application method and effect of concept map in the teaching of Pediatric Nursing.Methods In the teaching of Pediatric Nursing,45 undergraduate nursing students enrolling in 2006(experimental group) used the concept map teaching strategy,and 35 undergraduate nursing students enrolling in 2005(control group) used traditional teaching method.The scores in the theory test were compared between the two groups,and a self-designed questionnaire was used to investigate the student' feedback on the concept map teaching in the experimental group.Results The score of theory test in the experimental group was higher than that in the control group,and the differences were significant(P0.05).The survey showed that 92.4 percent of the students were satisfied with the use of concept map,88.4 percent of the students thought that concept map had promoted nursing professional course learning,82.1 percent of the students felt some difficulty in doing map,and 55.6 percent of the students suggested to improve drawing method.Conclusion Application of the concept map in the teaching of Pediatric Nursing can improve nursing students' achievement and promote them to carry on the meaningful study.

Abstract:Concept map is an effective graphic tool for organizing and representing knowledge. In order to improve the understanding of concept map and promote its better application in medical education, this paper reviews the characteristics of concept map teaching method, as well as its application in medical education. As tool and strategy, concept map plays a positive role in many teaching procedures, such as teachers′ teaching, students′ learning and assessing of learning. Its fields and model of application in medical education have become increasingly extensive and diverse. The outstanding advantage of concept map is that it can promote the realization of meaningful learning and self-directed learning.

Abstract:Background and objective: Concept mapping is a powerful instructional tool in the clinical settings that improves competency of undergraduate nursing students in interprets situations, problem solving, decision making and critical thinking in different circumstances. Also enable them to provide optimal comprehensive care for clients. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of concept mapping on problem solving skills, competence in the clinical settings and knowledge among undergraduate nursing students.Methods: Design and Setting: A quasi-experimental design was used and data were collected from Medical & Surgical Nursing Department and Community Health Nursing Department labs in the Faculty of Nursing, Tanta University. Sample: Random sample of 60 undergraduate nursing students which are selected by using simple random method who are divided into; thirty students from second year and thirty students from fourth year. Tools: Four tools were used for data collection: Tool (I): Structure questionnaire sheet to assess students’ knowledge regarding concept mapping, Tool (II): Case study rubric for assessing concept map, Tool (III): Problem solving skills assessment sheet and Tool (IV): Perception of students about using of concept map.Results: As a result of this research, there were significant improvements among students knowledge about concept map, simulation case study rubric and problem solving skills, in addition to more than three quarter from students had positive perceptions regarding application of concept mapping in the clinical settings.Conclusions and recommendation: Based on the findings of the study, there were significant improvement in the score of knowledge, simulation case study rubric and problem solving skills post application of concept mapping in the clinical setting. Therefore, it is necessary to improve wide-spreading of concept map training guidelines for large number of undergraduate nursing students at the level of the nursing faculties.

Abstract:Background: Critical thinking in present times is a profoundly esteemed instructive outcome after an educational course or program particularly corresponding to higher level of professional training. The main aim of the study was to compare the method of instruction and to enhance critical thinking among nursing students. Methodology: Quasi-experimental study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of concept mapping versus traditional method of instruction as a tool to enhance critical thinking among nursing students in medical surgical nursing (cardiovascular system). Pre-test and post-test control group design was used. B.Sc Nursing III year students were included as experimental group (n=97) and comparison group(n=94). The experimental group was initially given a session on concept mapping and its uses in nursing education. For both the groups instruction on cardiovascular conditions using concept mapping and traditional method was administered respectively. The experimental group and comparison group were assessed for the critical thinking ability using structured questionnaire. The concept maps were evaluated using McMurray’s method scoring criteria. Findings: The findings of the study suggest that the difference between pre-test and post-test mean knowledge scores in Concept mapping (variables- analysis, synthesis and evaluation) was found to be significantly higher than the traditional group at 0.05 level. There was significant improvement in construction of concept maps in criteria related to breadth, interconnectivity, and linkage. Majority of students coined the opinion which indicates high level of acceptance that ranges between 90 to 100%. Conclusion: It was concluded that concept mapping is an innovative strategy for enhancing critical thinking ability in nursing students.
The effectiveness of conceptmapping on development of critical thinking in nursing education : A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Article history: Received 7 December 2016 Received in revised form 15 February 2017 Accepted 22 February 2017 Objectives:As an essential skill in daily clinical nursing practice, critical thinking ability has been an important objective in nursing education. Concept mapping enables nursing students connect new information to existing knowledge and integrates interdisciplinary knowledge. However, there is a lack of evidence related to critical thinking ability and conceptmapping innursing education. The purpose of this systematic reviewandmeta-analysis was to assess the effect of concept mapping in developing critical thinking in nursing education. Design: This systematic review was reported in line with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). Data sources: A search was conducted in PubMed, Web of science, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Randomized controlled trials (RCT) comparing concept mapping and traditional teaching method were retrieved. Reviewmethods: Data were collected by two reviewers according to the data extraction tables. The methodological quality of included studieswas assessed by other two reviewers. The results ofmeta-analysiswere presented using mean difference (MD). Result: Thirteen trials were summarized in the systematic review and eleven trials were included in the metaanalysis. The pooled effect size showed that, comparing with traditional methods, concept mapping could improve subjects' critical thinking ability measured by California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI), California Critical Thinking Skill Test (CCTST) and Critical Thinking Scale (CTS). The subgroup analyses showed that concept mapping improved the score of all subscales. Conclusion: The result of this review indicated that concept mapping could affect the critical thinking affective dispositions and critical thinking cognitive skills. Further high quality research using uniform evaluation is required. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Background Concept maps demonstrate relationships between concepts visually, allowing connections to develop the learner's cognition. Despite studies that demonstrate the value of this method, it has still not been adopted in mainstream nursing education as an assessment tool. Aim The aim of this study is to evaluate the use of the concept map as an assessment tool in nursing education. Methods This study was conducted following the one-shot experimental design. One exam paper was designed to be given to participants at the final examination of a core shared undergraduate nursing/midwifery module. The target sample of the study were undergraduate first year students ( N = 185). Following initial exposure of student nurses/midwives, during the Autumn semester, concept maps were included into the final exam. These were evaluated and compared with another of the most traditional assessment methods, the multiple-choice question type (MCQ). Quantitative statistical analysis of the concept map and MCQ grades were conducted. Statistical tests were used to compare all pairs of both types of papers. Results All paired t -test results were found to be statistically significant and effect size results also supported the statistically significant results. Concept maps' structure allows the assessment of the totality of concepts of a specific area/section of the material. MCQs can assess one aspect/detail of a concept at a time without the limitation to draw material from a specific area/section. When used together, educators can use these different features in assessing student's knowledge/understanding on the totality of taught material. Additional advantage of the concept map is its straightforward, objective and quick correction process. Conclusion The study provides evidence that the concept map can be a trusted assessment tool for identifying the nursing students' gaps in knowledge and comprehension.

Abstract:A concept map is a visualisation of a group of related concepts with their relationships identified by directed arrows, which can be viewed as an externalisation of a schema encoded in a learner's long-term memory. Concept maps have become popular learning tools in various educational settings. However, the existing research has not fully explored the effectiveness of concept mapping as a learning tool nor analysed its utility as an assessment tool in mathematics. This study reports on the implementation and evaluation of a novel assessment, concept mapping, in a university mathematics course ( N = 219). We investigated relationships between concept mapping performance and two major outcome variables: academic achievement and assessment self-efficacy (a two-factor measure comprising Comprehension and Execution and Emotional Regulation ). Hierarchical multiple regression showed that concept mapping performance explains a statistically significant amount of variance in both the final exam scores and the Emotional Regulation factor of assessment self-efficacy after accounting for other conventional coursework assessments. The explained variance in the final exam suggests that concept mapping used as an assessment tool can detect and evaluate learners' distinct capabilities that are not discerned by conventional assessments. Hence, concept mapping's potential to assess conceptual understanding warrants further investigations. Moreover, the association with the emotional regulation efficacy measure suggests that concept mapping as a learning activity involves more positivity about the ability to succeed in facing challenges than a typical assignment. This potentially indicates more perseverance and effortful learning while actively engaged in meaning-making and the type of relational reasoning elicited by concept mapping.

Abstract:AIM: This qualitative study describes the experience of nursing students who construct and use electronic concepts maps in theoretical and clinical settings.BACKGROUND: Although concept maps are seen as innovative and effective teaching and learning tools, little qualitative data exists that describes the process by which students learn to master the skill of concept mapping.METHOD: A descriptive approach was used to analyze the data collected during 12 semi-structured interviews.RESULTS: Motivated, open-minded students tend to perceive the usefulness of concept mapping, making the experience positive. Workshops, along with constructive feedback, were deemed essential to helping students master the skill of concept mapping.CONCLUSION: The results of this study will contribute to the successful integration of group concepts maps as part of a new competency-based nursing program. Results could also be beneficial to programs that wish to adopt concept mapping.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Nursing developed over centuries. Changing practice and education influenced its interpretation and understanding. Its meaning and interpretation may differ amongst education institutions, nurse educators and nurses, particularly student nurses.OBJECTIVES: The objective was to develop a visual concept map of the concept of 'nursing', allowing nursing education institutions to have a similar approach and understanding in teaching the concept to student nurses.METHOD: The research design was qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual. A self-designed, pretested online questionnaire collected data from various categories of nurse participants. An integrative review viewed literature sources published between 2006 and 2016 accessing definitions of 'nursing'. Data analysis involved thematic analysis of narrative data, data coding processes, interpretation and synthesis of data and further analysis using a systematic concept analysis process. The combined analysed data merged, developing a visual concept map of 'nursing'. Expert nurse educators validated the visual concept map of 'nursing' by e-Delphi technique, using an assessment rubric.RESULTS: Various definitions of 'nursing' revealed identified themes and categories underpinning the concept. After formulation of connotative, denotative definitions and empirical referents, a visual concept map of 'nursing' was developed and validated to be an educational tool to facilitate the teaching of the concept of 'nursing', enhancing a similar understanding and interpretation thereof.CONCLUSION: A visual concept map of 'nursing', a tool facilitating teaching the concept and promoting similar understanding of its meaning is valuable in an evolving digital era, where visual stimulation enhances teaching and learning.Contribution: The primary contribution of the manuscript provided a developed visual concept map of 'nursing', to use as a tool to stimulate critical thinking and integrate the various aspects outlined in the map. The visual concept map of 'nursing' assists in the education and training of all categories of nurses in the profession, especially student nurses, aiming to support better patient outcomes when the concept of nursing is understood and interpreted in the same way.

Abstract:Background: The integration of concept mapping into nursing education represents a pivotal strategy aimed at enhancing critical thinking skills, which is a necessity in navigating the complexities of healthcare. This educational tool's role in stimulating students' analytical abilities and motivation towards critical thinking has become increasingly relevant in preparing nursing professionals for the dynamic challenges of their field. Objectives: The aim of this study is to examine how the implementation of concept mapping affects critical thinking motivation among nursing students, investigate the relationship between them, and support its use as an innovative educational strategy in the field of nursing. Design: This study was conducted using a descriptive and exploratory design. Methods: This research was carried out between May and June 2023, involving 435 nursing students. For data collection within an online classroom framework, the study applied a trio of tools: the Student Descriptive Information Form, the Scale for the Effectiveness of Concept Maps in Nursing Education, and the Critical Thinking Motivation Scale. The analysis of the compiled data was undertaken utilizing SPSS version 25.0 and JAMOVI software, with statistical significance set at a p-value of <0.05. Results: Engagement in social/scientific activities, library usage, and book reading habits were positively correlated with higher scores on both the Critical Thinking Motivation Scale and the Scale for the Effectiveness of Concept Maps in Nursing Education. Notably, concept mapping significantly enhanced critical thinking motivation among the participating students, as evidenced by the path analysis (β = 0.758, R = 0.563, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The findings underscore the significant role of concept mapping in elevating critical thinking motivation among nursing students, suggesting its strategic inclusion in nursing curricula to meet the evolving demands of healthcare education in the twenty-first century.

Impact of mind mapping on the critical thinking ability of clinical nursing students and teaching application

Abstract:Objective: We analyzed the impact of mind mapping on the critical thinking ability of clinical nursing students and its use as a teaching application. This study provides reference information for clinical teaching. Methods: We selected 64 nursing students using convenience sampling. Participants received basic knowledge training of mind mapping in three sessions during the intervention. Questionnaires on critical thinking ability were designed by the researchers, adopting the Chinese version of the Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory. Data collected using the questionnaires included learning strategy function and clinical skill improvement with mind mapping, as well as students’ degree of adaptability to mind mapping. Participants’ critical thinking ability before and after the intervention was analyzed using a paired t-test. Results: The critical thinking inclination of nursing students was significantly improved after intervention compared with that before the intervention (t = −0.74). The four dimensions of open-mindedness, inquisitiveness, cognitive maturity, and systematicity among nursing students after the intervention were also significantly improved compared with before the intervention. Conclusion: Mind mapping is conducive to improving the critical thinking ability of clinical nursing students.

Abstract:Background: Clinical judgment is an essential component of nursing education and a necessary skill for entry-level nurses. The use of traditional concept maps may not encourage adequate clinical judgment skills in nursing students. Method: Using the current NCLEX test plan, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing clinical judgment model, and the theoretical frameworks of Benner, Tanner, and Caputi, a new approach to concept mapping was developed. Results: Student feedback is positive, pointing to increased ability to prioritize nursing care and simplifying a significant amount of complex information and improved critical thinking and clinical judgment. Conclusion: This clinical concept map increases clinical judgment by assimilating and analyzing clinical information and integrating it into the nursing process. Abstract:Appropriate and effective critical thinking and problem solving is necessary for all nurses in order to make complex decisions that improve patient outcomes, safety, and quality of nursing care. With the current emphasis on quality improvement, critical thinking ability is a noteworthy concern within the nursing profession. An in-depth review of literature related to critical thinking was performed. The use of nursing care plans and concept mapping to improve critical thinking skills was among the recommendations identified. This study compares the use of nursing care plans and concept mapping as a teaching strategy for the enhancement of critical thinking skills in baccalaureate level nursing students. The California Critical Thinking Skills Test was used as a method of comparison and evaluation. Results indicate that concept mapping enhances critical thinking skills in baccalaureate nursing students.

Abstract:With the prevalence of web-based learning, the application of concept mapping, as a powerful diagnostic and instructional tool, has been widely exploited in both education and computer science. In recent years, several methods have been presented to automatically construct concept map that achieved encouraging results, while ignoring some critical issues when applied in actual E-learning system. In this paper, we propose a practical approach for constructing concept map, which is adapted to the dynamic character of a real system. Moreover, we apply fuzzy set theory and fuzzy reasoning basis on fuzzy rules for similarity degree between two concepts, to find direct prerequisite relationship among concepts. It provides a useful way to improve accuracy and reduce complexity of the concept map.
Summary and Thinking on Application of Best Practice Guideline in Nursing Teaching

Abstract:Objective? To explore how to apply best practice guideline in teaching and the initial effects. Methods? After deeply investigating courses, this study selected best practice guideline by combining with existing problems in teaching. Combined with the first-level and second-level class, a careful design scheme was conducted by each course groups and multiple rounds of project argumentation. After determining the program and teaching resources, each guideline application course group began to fully implement according to their own program. Results? The best practice guidelines were successfully applied in 7 courses through various teaching forms including situation simulation, flipped classroom, case teaching as well as role playing which played an positive role in teaching content, teaching design and teaching evaluation. Conclusions? In the whole process of implementation, teachers and students feel that the application of best practice guideline in nursing teaching is helpful to expand the frontier content of teaching, establish the evidence-based concept of teachers and students and initially cultivate critical thinking. It also plays a positive role in arousing the enthusiasm of nursing students and the comprehensive application of the knowledge they have learned. It makes evaluation methods flexible and diversified and is also beneficial to the real and objective response to the learning effect of nursing students.

Abstract:Concept maps are graphic representations that learners draw to depict their understanding of the meaning of a set of concepts. Concept maps can be a useful learning strategy in medical education. The purpose of this guide is to provide an understanding of the theoretical basis and instructional use of concept mapping in health professions education. The guide describes the key elements of a concept map and underscores the critical components of the implementation process, from the introduction of the activity to the use of different mapping techniques, based on purpose and context. This guide also examines the learning opportunities offered by collaborative concept mapping, including co-construction of knowledge, and provides suggestions for the use of concept mapping as an assessment for learning. Implications for the use of concept mapping as a tool for remediation are mentioned. Finally, the guide describes some of the challenges related to the implementation of this strategy.
