Studies on the Quality of Cochineals

Abstract:In this paper,the study on the cochineal(Dactylopius coccus Costa)quality by determined cochineal's length(CL),kilo-cochineals weight(KCW),cochineal wax(CW)and carminic acid(CA)of the dried bodies of the female cochineal from Lufeng,Jingdong,Kunming and Tonghai of the North subtropics,South subtropics and Middle subtropics,Yunnan,China,showed that typeⅠ dried cochineals are about 88 000 /kg,typeⅡ are about 127 000/kg,typeⅠ and typeⅡ are consistent with overseas breeding cochineals about 70 000-140 000 /kg.The CA average contention is 18.56% consistent with overseas breeding cochineals 17%-24%.By the statistical analysis proves,KCW and CA are not notable with the test places,the breeding method,the harvesting seasons of cochineals,but they are notable with the types of cochineals.And so the commercial cochineal quality guide can be designated four classes namely the first to the fourth class.The processing cochineal can be designated three classes namely the first class to the third class.
