The Impacts of Labor Migration on Farm Households' Agricultural Production: Literature Review andFuture Issues

Abstract:The massive out flow of labor has exerted complicated impacts on farm households' agricultural production.Recent literatures on this topic were reviewed in this paper from four aspects of the impacts on agricultural income,agricultural investment,agricultural productivity and agricultural structure.Most recent studies find that farmers' agricultural income drop sharply because of the loss of rural labor force while migrant's remittances compensate for this drop indirectly by stimulating agricultural production.And the negative effect of the loss of rural labor force is dominant,which leads to a decrease of agricultural productivity and technical efficiency.Moreover,the agricultural technique adoption degree of households whose family members flow out is different from non-migrant households'.Farmers cut down the investment on agriculture as family members flow out to the city,which may influence agricultural production negatively in the long term.Furthermore,all previous studies consistently suggest that migrant households have adjusted their agricultural structure,whereas the direction of the adjustment depends on research samples.

Abstract:The benefits of adult education are an assessment of the benefit performance of education. Through the survey data collected from 1110 migrant workers of 11 cities in Zhejiang province ,an empirical research on the main influencing factors of educa-tion benefits of migrant workers with the expanded methods of Mincer revenue function is conducted, based on wage determinism the-ory and human capital theory. The results show that the education benefits of migrant workers are affected by individual characteristics and occupation characteristics, among which gender, working time, working experience, education background, employ ment areas, marriage, work place, work stability, frequency of changing job and training have exerted deep influences on education benefits. How-ever, the source of migrant workers and contracts have no significant influence. Finally, the existing problems about education benefits of migrant workers are further discussed.
The Impact of Labor Migration on Farm Households' Rice Production

Abstract:Based on survey data from Jiangxi province in 2009,this paper establishes production functions to analyze the productivity changes of farm households in response to the outflowof family members,in the point of viewof village level agricultural infrastructure investment and life cycle theory.The empirical results suggest that the remittance from migrant members can help farm households use more chemical fertilizer and pesticides in rice production to get more yields,while the increase of non-agriculture income weakens their concentration on farm work and hence negatively affect rice output.Migrant households at villages with poor infrastructure may input insufficient labor,sharply reducing the output of rice.

Abstract:Based on CHIP data executed in 2003 and 2008,this paper conducts a comparative study on the intergenera-tional differences and time-point differences between the first and second generation of migrant workers by the perspectives of wage determination and willingness of staying in the city.The regression results show that there is no significant difference between two generations in wage determination and willingness of staying in the city,and migrant workers as a whole still heavily rely on job mobility to improve their income level.Specifically,the second generation of migrant workers have higher levels of education,especially in 2008,but there is no significant intergenerational difference on return of education or im-provement over time.Both generations rely on job mobility to raise their income level,which is even more prominent in 2008, without apparent intergenerational differences,also showing high willingness to stay in the city in two survey years.Main fac-tors that affect the migrant workers’willingness to stay in the city show the features of time-point differences rather than in-tergenerational differences.Migratory job mobility do no good for the second generation migrant workers’willingness to stay in the city in 2008.Besides,the income levels of cities,pension,health care and other social undertakings development level are the important factors that affect the whole migrant workers’willingness to stay in the city.

Abstract:The labor shortage phenomenon troubling China's economic development in recent years reveals the incomplete understanding of labor supply scale and structure,which rejects the theory of unlimited supply of labor force and also reveals the situation of urban and rural labor market segmentation,difficulties of free migration and ineffective allocation of labors.The urban and rural labor market segmentation makes the labor fail to stable institutional expectation and lack skills wills of strengthening skills and human capital accumulation,and makes them migrate and employ in migratory pattern.In the meanwhile,enterprises faced with the employees with high degree of mobility fail to input resources to upgrade industry structure.The two factors cause the overdevelopment and over-competition of laborvintensive enterprises which rely on low-cost,low-skilled labor force,which further leads to conflicts of intensive labor demand and limited room for improvement of labor wages.This paper analyzes the impact factors of urban and rural labor migration pattern using data on the permanent migration wills of rural migrant workers in Hangzhou to explore the affecting degree of these factors as the labor migration cost on the urban and rural labor market segmentation.The policy meaning is to provide reference for the institution arrangements that foster integration of urban and rural labor market and permanent migration of rural labor.

Abstract:Based on a survey of 1 325 farmer households in Zhejiang,Sichuan and Henan Province,this paper use logistic regression models to emprical analyze the migration intentions of rural households in three provinces chosen from Central,Eastern and Western of China.The result shows that age,numbers of students and Hukou policy have a significant negative impact on migration intention.Duration of education and total household income have a positive significant impact.Social network and One Child policy have no significant impact on migration intention.The analysis of different provinces shows that:duration of education,duration of working,Hukou policy,age and total household income have a significant impact on migration intention.However,there is regional heterogeneity in the three provinces.Based on the empirical study,this paper puts forward some policy implications.

Abstract:Using 904 migrant labors’ data sample,the paper,This paper attempts to explore the impact of rural-urban work shift of migrant labors on their marital relationship from the two dimensions of marital satisfaction and spouse affection.Studies have shown that work shift experience of migrant labors has a significant effect on marital relations.Men’s evaluation of marriage is much higher than women’s,both work characteristics of migrant workers such as monthly income,daily working hours and individual characteristics including health status,psychological status have significant effect on marital relations.Years of marriage and marital satisfaction of migrant labors represent nonlinear relationship.

Abstract:This paper explores the key impacts of migration on agricultural production restructuring in Jiangxi province by considering household farm activities choice and crop acreage adjustment behavior. We used the Heckman model to address the sample selection bias and instrumental variable to deal with the reverse causality problem. The results show that, amid China's unique institutional background, the administrative restrictions on the free flow of labor and land hindered agriculture restructuring, forcing the rural family members left behind to turn to less labor-intensive subsistence grain production instead of more capital-intensive livestock cultivation, or to even abandon their farmland. However, we also find the important role of return migrants in the agriculture modernization process. They can provide both financial and human capital to promote more specialized agricultural production. We propose several suggestions for agricultural restructuring in rural China.

Abstract:The rural labor′s transfer to non-agricultural sectors and urban areas is a necessary requirement for the commercialization of agricultural products.This paper analyzes the impact of labor migration on the commercialization of agricultural products by using the data from a resent survey of 4 counties in Jiangxi province.The results show that there is no significant difference in the commercialization ratio of agricultural products between the families with migrant labors and those without migrant labors,however if the differences in the intensiveness of agricultural production factors are taken into account the effects of labor migration emerges.The households with migrant labors sell more cereals while households without migrant labors sell higher proportion of other products.Moreover,the land market and rural credit market have significant effects on agricultural commercialization.

Abstract:With the continuous progress of urbanization,rural household migration has become an important mode of the flow of migrant workers.The women of rural migrant households have to play a dual role of employed worker and main housework undertaker at the same time.This mode of migration will have a great impact on women's labor supply behavior.The paper tries to analyze the factors influencing rural household women's labor supply behavior by using survey data in Zhejiang Province.The result shows that working experience,training,local life time and wage have significant impact on women's labor supply.The impact of family structure is not significant.Migrating along with children or the old in family will reduce the labor force participation rate and working hours of women significantly.The result of quantile regression shows that the impact of each factor on women's working hour varies in different quantile.

Abstract:Based on 2513 survey samples of migrant labors from the rural in 7 cities of Zhejiang province,the paper analyzes the employment status and social security situation of the rural migrant labors by descriptive statistical methods,and establishes an order probit model to explore the factors influencing the migrant labors' willingness to migrate between cities and the differences in gender and generation.The findings show that employment status and social security affect the migrant labor's willingness to migrate between cities.In addition,factors such as family structure,migration and education have significant impact on the migrant labor's willingness to migrate too.The impacts of these factors have differences by gender and generations.

Abstract:Using the Chinese Household Income Project migration dataset 2002 and 2007,the paper studies wage differentials among rural-urban migrants and its change. Based on the quantile regression and unconditional distribution decomposition methods,the empirical results indicate that,first of all,wage differentials among migrants has decreased significantly;secondly,the increase in returns dominates the total differentials;thirdly,residuals show different impact between upper tail and down tail of wage distribution.

Abstract:This paper broadens the scope of current theoretical studies, divides rural agriculture into two sectors—advanced and traditional, and takes into consideration the land factor and the urban informal sector. Under the assumption that wages in the advanced agricultural sector are higher than in the traditional agricultural sector, this paper analyzes the effect of policies to promote advanced agricultural development with the comparative static method. The main conclusions of this paper are: wage subsidization of the advanced agricultural sector, in addition to having the same economic impact as interest subsidies on the advanced agricultural sector, could also increase the land employment in the advanced agricultural sector and reduce that in the traditional agricultural sector. Therefore, the effect of wage subsidizing policies is stronger than that of interest subsidies, while land rent subsidies for the advanced agricultural sector have the same economic effect as wage subsidies.

Abstract:This article attempts to examine the effect of the enterprise system and social environment under conditions of market transition on the wages of migrant workers using regression analysis of Pearl River Delta migrant worker survey data. The research found that among human capital variables, educational level and length of employment in their present firms have a significant positive effect on the wages of migrant workers, while age and gender also have a significant effect; among enterprise system variables, the type of work also significantly influences wages, demonstrating clear stratification. Industry, scale and firm type do not significantly influence wages, regardless of labor contract or labor supply status. Social capital variables and social environmental factors do not have a significant effect on peasant-worker wage levels. The article therefore concludes that migrant worker wages are highly marketized and are at one extreme of a segmented dual labor market. They lack intra-firm labor markets and promotion mechanisms, are little influenced by changes in labor market conditions, and show no regional variations. They represent low wages of an extreme rigidity.

Abstract:Based on the employment surveys migrant workers from Zhejiang in Hangzhou City,the paper analyzed the generational differences in the employment of migrant workers.First of all,descriptive statistics on the individual characteristics,socio-economic characteristics,and employment status of two generations of migrant workers were conducted;then followed by F test,T test,and range test on the independent samples to verify the existence of significant differences in two generations of peasant workers in wages and benefits,occupation,expected future employment.Quality-related analysis was conducted to verify whether the age difference of migrant workers influences the purpose of motivation,employment channels,the most important employment difficulties encountered.The results showed that there are significant differences between two generations of migrant workers in wages,multiple occupation,and work experience;and there are significant differences between two generations of migrant workers in the motive and purpose of flow and the employment channels.

Abstract:With the reform getting more in-depth,peasant workers are making greater contributions to the economy of their immigration regions.Their subjective recognition of their economic contributions shows differences due to various influences.Five factors of migration/immigration places,human capital,economic returns,social acceptance,and social identity are built in a logistic regression model to analyze their influences on the peasant workers' subjective recognition of their economic contributions to the regions where they have come to work.Except for the first factor,all the other four factors significantly affect the workers' subjective recognition of their economic contribution.

Abstract:This article collects nearly 20,000 migrant workers’ posts from the People’s Daily Online Leaders’ Message Board (difang lingdao liuyanban) between 2011 and 2019 using web crawler technology. Through the methods of word segmentation and word frequency statistics, this article analyzes the claims of migrant workers in the process of social integration. The results of word frequency statistics show that migrant workers' claims are ranked as follows: salary, labor rights, housing, children's education, social security, returning home to start a business, and hukou (household registration system). Among them, the claims regarding salary are the most urgent. From the regional perspective, migrant workers in the west publish the largest number of posts, followed by migrant workers in the east and in the center. This article argues that, in accordance with these claims, the government formulates corresponding public policies to help migrant workers achieve the triple conversion of occupation, life, and identity from being farmers to becoming urban citizens, which is of great significance for allowing migrant workers to better integrate into urban life and improve their living standards. Based on the analysis, this article puts forward corresponding public policy recommendations.

Abstract:Labor migration plays an important role for the decrease of rural-urban income variation and the promotion of China's economic growth.This article,using the adult survey of China Health and Nutrition Survey(CHNS) database from 2004 to 2006,through Probit model,quantitatively analyzes the influential factors of China's rural labor migration.It shows that variables such as marriage status,health and amusement preferences have significant impacts on the decision of rural labor migration,while the influence of income is not significant.Furthermore,family burden is not an influential factor for migration decision,and married women tend to migration together with their husbands.Both above facts lead to the problem of empty-nest elderly.Finally,the most efficient way to promote rural labor migration is to increase the educational level of rural labors,among which the first choice should be the university and junior college education,and the second choice should be vocational and technological school education.
