Abstract:Statistical analysis for the international outcome of Humanities and Social Sciences in the past three decades is very important for clarifying the development process of the subjects.Hence,the paper takes SSCI and A & HCI as source of information to analyze quantitatively the international outcome of Humanities and Social Sciences in the past three decades.The results show that the international output of Peking University is the maximum,Chinese Academy of Social Sciences had a stable international output in the early stage of the reform,psychology is one of the major disciplines of international output,and the Chinese Academy of Sciences' h index is the highest.

Abstract:The development modes differences between scientific culture and literary culture have objectively existed, which led to the dominance of academic resources and academic disputes.With the social economic development,only developing all the science well can toward to the human civilization.In recent years,China has issued a series of impor-tant policies in order to develop and prosper the social science.Meanwhile,the social science researchers have increased and the funding support on social science have also been enhanced.Based on the social science development of the for-eign well-known universities and the reform trends of domestic universities,Xi′an Jiaotong University puts forward a so-cial science system which is full of its characteristics,forms and styles to deepen the institutional mechanisms reform. Furthermore,the university will take some measures to strengthen the discipline layout,aggregate high-level talents, implement the significant subject guiding project,build the production transformation platform and carry out reform measures on fund management.

Abstract:Academic journals,by which academic influence of a country is indicated,provide important sources for research.The number of papers collected by the three US science citation databases(SCI,SSCI,AHCI) is an important index of a discipline's international academic influence.An analysis of academic papers indexed by the three science citation databases over the last three decades in our country reveals that great gaps exist in the number of papers indexed by each database,which embodies great imbalance in the development and international academic influence of the three subjects,of which natural science developed at a high speed,social science developed rapidly,and art and humanities developed slowly.In order to enhance the international academic influence of our country,policies should be stipulated to balance the development of different subjects.The way to classify subjects should be reformed: the philosophical social science should be divided into two subjects——social science and art humanities.Correct methods should be used in evaluating different subjects and measures should be taken to assist academic journals in entering international citation databases and thereby promote the internationalization.

Abstract:With the development of scientific research,effective evaluation of institutes' achievements becomes one of the great challenges that decision makers face.Based on the analysis of SCImago Institutions Rankings World Report 2010 in health sciences,life sciences,physical sciences and social sciences humanities,the status of Chinese institutes in the world are discussed by analyzing various indicators like output,international collaboration,high quality publications,normalized impact and the correlations between them.Chinese institutes perform quiet well in output but still not catch up that of the America.In terms of international collaboration,they are much less active than the European countries,which attach great importance to global cooperation.In addition,there are still great difference between China and leading countries in other two indicators of high quality publications and normalized impact.Therefore with keeping the high quantity of papers,Chinese institutes should also aim to improve their quality by making stronger international links and encouraging scientific researchers to submit their papers to high quality academic journals,so as to strengthen the communication with prominent author group.

Abstract:Purpose The research in this paper aims to investigate the development of Library and Information Science in Chinese universities. Specifically, it focuses on understanding the spatial and temporal aspects of subject knowledge output and providing a more comprehensive explanation of the imbalance in subject research. Design/methodology/approach This study applies the bibliometric method to analyze 131,112 papers published by 51 universities in mainland China from 1977 to 2021, as recorded in the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI). The study classifies the evolution trends of the discipline and quantifies the published article data of the universities using the index of published articles. Additionally, it examines the development status, structural situation, influencing factors and prospects of universities in different categories and regions. Findings The field of Library and Information Science is gaining momentum in Chinese universities, but there are significant differences in its development. While the relative gap among universities in a regional context is diminishing, the absolute gap in the category perspective is increasing. The development of Library and Information Science is influenced by various factors, including the academic environment, geographical position, scientific research projects and academic traditions. The uneven development of the discipline is maintained in the short term. Originality/value This paper proposes a new quantitative index of discipline development, the university publication index. This index allows for an examination of the temporal and spatial trends of discipline development using domestic universities as the subject of research. The paper presents an overview of discipline development through four aspects: academic participation practice, discipline governance mechanisms, education and teaching systems and discourse construction within the discipline. The theoretical support provided by this study can help facilitate innovative development in the discipline.

Abstract:Research-oriented universities,which focus on scientific research and talents cultivating,emerge in China as a result of the rapid development of science and technology in the 20th century.Talents in research-oriented universities include an outstanding research and teaching staff and excellent postgraduates.A research-oriented university plays an indispensable role in cultivating talents by taking advantage of its strong teaching staff, first class facilities for scientific research and sufficient funding.The paper presents a statistical analysis of 15 research-oriented universities in China,such as Tsinghua University,Beijing University and Nanjing University.Based on the analysis,four suggestions are made with regard to the policies concerning university teaching,university management,scientific research and fund use.

Abstract:Through analyzing and comparing the ranking distribution and individual index score of u-niversities across China,America,UK,Germany and Japan in ARWU,THES,QS and UNWR,it is found that,the ranking of China's universities fell behind.There exists a huge gap in the dimensions of teaching,outstanding scientific research achievements and academic influence,a weak attractiveness to international teacher-student and a high degree of participation in social service for China's universities. In the future,Chinese"world-class university"construction should be carried out in three aspects--in-creasing resources input,promoting the reform of teacher evaluation system,and changing developmen-tal ideology for achieving universities'internationalization strategy and social service function.

Abstract:This study analyzes the position of top Chinese universities in the world and their performance in various academic indexes.It is found that in natural science and engi- neering fields,some famous universities from mainland already had relatively large amount of publications,but the proportions of papers in great impact journals are still low,and are lac- king in original achievements of great influence and top scholars.The study also reveals that in comparison with world class universities,fields of life science and clinical medicine in Chi- na still stand at a beginning stage.As for social science fields,the international impact of top Chinese universities is still negligible.Suggestions are made accordingly:rationally view the position of our top universities and its current discipline state in the world;stick to the confi- dence of building world-class universities and disciplines and further expand key input to sev- eral top universities;confirm the idea of intensive development so as to realize the rapid change from quantitative accumulation to quality improvement.

Abstract:Purpose - This paper is written as an attempt to employ the Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI) in the evaluation of Chinese humanities and social science research.Design/methodology/approach - This paper uses statistics in the CSSCI (2000-2004) to analyze the academic impact of researchers, papers and works, institutions and regions on Chinese humanities and social science research.Findings - The authors identify 100 highly cited people, 50 highly cited papers, 50 highly cited works, 20 highly productive institutions and 20 highly cited institutions. Also provided is some regional information about Chinese humanities and social science research.Originality/value - It is hoped that the CSSCI, as well as the analysis and evaluation based on it, will give researchers a better understanding of Chinese humanities and social science research.

Abstract:This review paper focused on the high-impact research metrics, current state of higher education system and world university rankings of China. First, the research prospects in China described internationally with number of research field. Now, the largest field of research in China is engineering. In recent years, China ranked 1 st position for publishing documents & citable documents among the world. China always ranked 1 st position in high-impact research metrics on engineering field. The total number of Chinese Nobel laureates are thirteen (13). Secondly, an overview of higher education system in China presented with educational statistics. The enrolment procedure in Chinese universities to participated in National Higher Education Entrance Examination (Gaokao). In the recent years, the acceptance rate of Gaokao have increased. Now the number of high school graduates who attend in university is more than 60%. The number of foreign students has also increased rapidly. Finally, Academic ranking of world universities shown that there are four Chinese university placed in Top 100 university category. The best four Chinese universities are Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University & Shanghai Jiao Tong University respectively.

Abstract:Through exploring the history of American disciplines of Humanities and Social Sciences, in the perspectives of their subject nature, social functions and the curriculum in higher education, it is revealed that the disciplines, experienced hard and effective re-adjustment after the depression in the former half-century of the 20th. The disciplines now have fully recovered with a fresh, positive attitude towards a new era, by cooperating with science and connecting to social needs and students' interests. Compared with those western countries with the tradition of science, Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences reform would face with even more difficulties. However, the advancement of the disciplines is significant to the establishment of a common value in the future multicultural society.

Abstract:The phenomenon of China's rise as an emerging scientific power has been well documented, yet the development of its social science is less explored. Utilizing up-to-date Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) publication data (1978–2013), this paper probes the patterns and dynamics of China's social science research via bibliometric analyses. Our research indicates that despite the national orientation of social science research and the linguistic obstacle of publishing for an international audience, China's publications in the SSCI dataset have been rising in terms of volume, world share, and global ranking. But China is still not yet a major player in the arena of social sciences, as is evidenced by the number of Chinese journals indexed in SSCI and the lack of Olympic players. Team research features China's international publishing in social science, but the research outputs are highly unbalanced at regional and institutional levels.

Abstract:This paper employs Data Envelopment Analysis ( DEA) to evaluate social scientific research efficiency of 68 universities directly under the Ministry of Education of P. R. China from the year 2000 to 2003 and it' s trend . The findings indicate that the social scientific research efficiency increases by year, but the general level of efficiency should be further improved. According to the results, the reasons of low efficiency in social scientific research of some universities are inquired from two dimensions, PTE ( pure technical efficiency) and SE ( scale efficiency) and some policy suggestions to improve the efficiency are put forward.

Abstract:As a key factor in discipline development,high-quality papers play a very important role in the evaluation of disciplines.Based on the Scopus database developed by Elsevier,a study is conducted on the output of high-quality papers in various disciplines of ten well-known Chinese and foreign universities of science and technology between 1995 and 2014.With the aid of charts,an analysis is made on the structural ratios and differences between China and other countries during the past 20 years.Related suggestions are also offered for the development of the disciplinary structure at science and technology universities in China.

Abstract:The crux of this thesis is the interaction between tradition and modernity in respect of Chinese higher education as it is being pushed to the forefront of development in the most rapidly growing economy in the world. The earlier chapters illustrate certain fundamental traits and contexts that provide enduring features of the story. These include a necessary understanding of the temporal and spatial parameters which are both of massive scale, itself both a problem and an asset. Through such contextual discussion it is possible to illustrate the longstanding relationship between Chinese higher education and sustainable development. For example the Mandarin civil service examination may appear elitist and archaic but in fact was meritocratic and thereby created a network of local schooling to sustain itself. The main research design is an embedded case study of the Chinese higher education system with multiple regional and institutional cases. The design employs both historical research and field research, both of which involve documentary and empirical data. The bulk of the thesis explores the four interconnected themes of: higher education expansion; aspiration to world-class university status; university entrepreneurialism; and university-region engagement, and their interaction with China's social and economic development. This part is concerned with the way in which in the contemporary China of creative tension between the contribution of strong central authority and the release of market forces, the universities of China have become engines of development. This has been achieved through dynamic ecological relationships with local, regional and national scales of political economy. Both the nation and its universities have succeeded to date in absorbing the best of the Western academic and technological advances into a form of political and spatial hierarchies that provide systematic structures for sustainable development. It may remain an open question as to how long this creative tension can be maintained. Chinese universities are under increasing pressure to advance with the global market place as well. But so far the bedrock of an enduring meritocracy operating within a coherent social tradition and stable political situation appears to be enabling higher education to play a key role in the social and economic development of the nation.
