The Interpretation of Idioms: A Constructional Perspective

Abstract:Since the interpretation in lexicon of formal grammar failed to solve the problem of idiosyncrasy from idioms,early construction grammar tried to solve the problem.Construction grammar's classics works re-interpret the concept of idiom and confirm the status of idioms as constructions.The scope of idiom in the perspective of construction grammar is wider than that in its traditional sense.Idioms can be classified from different constructional point of view.The features of common constructions are shared by idiomatic constructions,substantive idiomatic constructions of which have their own features.
