Abstract:Silver nanorods have been prepared by an electrochemical technique from an aqueous solution of AgNO3 in the presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG). The silver nanorods were characterized by using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and absorption spectroscopy. It was found that the concentration of AgNO3 and PEG affected the formation of the nanorods.

Abstract:Designed experiments are carried out to systematically study the effects of silver ions on morphology and yield of gold nanorods synthesized via a seed-mediated method. Gold nanorods synthesized with different silver ions and CTAB concentrations were characterized by absorption spectroscopy and TEM. The shape and yield of gold nanorods were effectively controlled by adjusting the concentration ratio of CTAB and silver ions for synthesis. Dark field images of a glass slide sample with gold nanorods deposit and a sample with gold nanrods staining cells further confirmed that high quality gold nanorods were obtained.

Abstract:We describe the electrochemical synthesis of silver oxide nanowires and nanowire bundles, filled platelets and hollow microplatelets in either basic or acidic N,N-dimethylformamide solution. We propose that these nanostructures are formed at the electrode surface via two competing reactions namely, silver dissolution off the electrode in the presence of NH3 or HF during the anodization of silver, and silver oxide precipitation. Results show that the precipitated silver oxide nanoparticles aggregate into nanowires as well as into filled and hollow microscale platelets, depending upon the nuclei concentration and the anodization current density. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and Raman scattering spectroscopy show that the nanowires and microplatelets are mainly composed of Ag2O. Nanowire bundles are used as substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) where single molecule detection is achieved and evidenced using a bianalyte Raman technique.

Abstract:A simple and effective approach to the aqueous phase synthesis of crystalline silver nanorods and nanowires is demonstrated, using which their diameters and spect ratios can be effectively controlled. The synthesis involves a template-less and non-seed process to high-quality nanoparticles, which is low-cost and proceeds at moderate temperatures. The nanorods and nanowires were synthesized by the reduction of silver nitrate with tri-sodium citrate in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfonate. The concentration of tri-sodium citrate plays a critical role while sodium dodecylsulfonate, as a capping agent, only plays an assistant role in controlling the diameters and aspect rations of the products. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) investigations show that the silver nanocrystals are generated with a twinned crystalline structure. We also put forward a primary experimental model to shed light on their growth mechanisms.

Abstract:Uniform silver nanorods have been successfully synthesized through a nanowire-seeding, multisteps polyol process in the high concentration reaction system. In this developed three-step polyol process, ethylene glycol is used as the solvent and reductant while poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) is used as the capper agent. The silver nanowires are used as the seeds in step 3 to radial grow into nanorods with larger diameter but similar length. Desorption of PVP from the surface of silver is presumed as the critical factor to cause the dominant regrowth of wire-like seeds towards radial direction, rather than axial direction. More details of the radial growth mechanism have also been discussed. This synthesis strategy will be significant in the large scaled preparation of nanomaterials.

Abstract:Multicomponent nano-agents were designed and built via a core-shell approach to enhance their surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signals. These nano-agents had 36 nm × 12 nm gold nanorod cores coated by 4 nm thick silver shell films and a subsequent thin bifunctional thiolated polyethylene glycol (HS-PEG-COOH) layer. Ambient time-lapsed SERS signal measurements of these functionalized nanorods taken over a two-week period indicated no signal degradation, suggesting that large portions of the silver shells remained in pure metallic form. The morphology of the nanorods was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultra-high resolution scanning TEM. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) were utilized to assess the oxidation states of the silver shells covered by HS-PEG-COOH. The binding energies of Ag 3d XPS spectra yielded very small chemical shifts with oxidation; however, the AES peak shapes gave meaningful information about the extent of oxidation undergone by the nano-agent. While the silver shells without HS-PEG-COOH coatings oxidized significantly, the silver shells with HS-PEG-COOH remained predominantly metallic. In fact, six month-old samples still retained mostly metallic silver shells. These findings further demonstrate the stability and longevity of the nanostructures, indicating their significant potential as plasmonically active agents for highly sensitive detection in various biological systems, including cancer cells, tissues, or even organisms.

Abstract:This paper describes a new approach to the synthesis of Ag nanorods. A solvothermal method was used to make Ag nanoparticles inside anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. The nanoparticles were then annealed at 300°C to produce Ag nanorods. The size of AAO templates, which is focused on in this study, would determine the diameter of Ag nanorods. The product was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In this study, a nanorod growth mechanism is deduced, and understanding of the growth of nanorods inside AAO templates is furthered. This work demonstrates that it is possible to make crystalline nanorods that the size can be varied.

Abstract:Recent studies have conclusively shown that the plasmonic performance of Au nanostructures can be enhanced by incorporating Ag. Here, we developed a simple and robust approach for preparing core-shell Au-Ag nanoshuttles (NSs) using single-crystal Au nanorods (NRs) as cores. Upon tailoring the temperature of the reaction system containing alkaline glycine buffer (pH 8.5), exceptionally monodisperse Au-Ag NSs with sharp tips and tunable shell thickness could be routinely achieved in high yield through an epitaxial growth process. In particular, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and nitric acid corrosive experiments revealed that the shells of these NSs consisted of a homogeneous Au-Ag alloy, rather than pure Ag or Au as previously reported. It was found that glycine played an important role in determining the final metal contents of the shell by regulating the reduction kinetics. In addition, the obatined Au-Ag NSs with sharp tips were shown to have significantly improved refractive index sensitivity and surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity relative to the original Au NRs, making these materials promising for biomedical applications, such as biosensing and biolabeling.

Abstract:Silver nanorods were prepared through the microwave heating method in the presence of ethylene glycol as a reducing agent and poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as a protective agent. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and particle size results showed that nanorod type particles took the great majority of the products and the particle size was mainly between 50 and 200 nm. TEM and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy were employed to investigate the mechanism. Results showed that both the length and the width, especially the length of the nanorods increased with the increase of the reaction time. The content of silver ions determination data explained that the addition of chloride ions could control the release of silver ions, leading to the low speed of reduction, which promoted the formation of silver nanorods. The reaction would reach the maximum rate in 6 to 7 minutes. The forming of tetrahedral nanoparticles during the reaction was crucial for producing silver nanorods.

Abstract:Monodisperse Ag nanoparticles with diameters of about 3.4 nm were synthesized by a facile ultrasonic synthetic route at room temperature with the reduction of borane-tert-butylamine in the presence of oleylamine (OAm) and oleic acid (OA). The reaction parameters of time, the molar ratios of OAm to OA were studied, and it was found that these parameters played important roles in the morphology and size of the products. Meanwhile, surface enhanced Raman spectrum (SERS) property suggested the Ag nanoparticles exhibited high SERS effect on the model molecule Rhodamine 6G. And also, two-photon fluorescence images showed that the silver nanoparticles had high performances in fluorescence enhancement.

Abstract:A variety of nearly monodisperse semiconductor nanocrystals, such as US, ZnS, and ZnS:Mn, with controllable aspect ratios have been successfully prepared through a facile synthetic process. These as-prepared nanocrystals were obtained from the reactions between metal ions and thioacetamide by employing octadecylamine or oleylamine as the surfactants. The effects of reaction temperature and time, ratios of thioacetamide to inorganic precursors, and the reactant content on the size and crystal purity of the nanorods, have been systematically investigated. The optical properties and the formation mechanism of the nanorods have also been discussed. For the next biolabel applications, these hydrophobic nanocrystals have also been transferred into hydrophilic colloidal spheres by means of an emulsion-based bottom-up self-assembly approach.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile method for synthesis of Au-AgCdSe hybrid nanorods with controlled morphologies and spatial distributions. The synthesis involved deposition of Ag tips at the ends of Au nanorod seeds, followed by selenization of the Ag tips and overgrowth of CdSe on these sites. By simply manipulating the pH value of the system, the AgCdSe could selectively grow at one end, at both the ends or on the side surface of a Au nanorod, generating a mike-like, dumbbell-like, or toothbrush-like hybrid nanorod, respectively. These three types of Au-AgCdSe hybrid nanorods displayed distinct localized surface plasmon resonance and photoluminescence properties, demonstrating an effective pathway for maneuvering the optical properties of nanocrystals.

Abstract:Using a simple wet chemical route, high-yield silver nanowires with an average diameter of 25 +/- 15 nm and length up to several pm and dendrites with a long central backbone and symmetrically ramified secondary branches have been successfully obtained by reducing AgNO3 with L-ascorbic acid (AsA) in the mixed surfactant solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). It was found that the architecture of silver nanocrystals was drastically influenced by the concentrations of ascorbic acid. At a given high concentration, a nonequilibrium system was easily built, which favored the formation of fractals. When the concentration was lowered, one-dimensional silver nanowires were successfully obtained. In addition, the presence of electrolyte (NaCl) plays an important role in the preparation of silver nanowires, influencing the silver crystallization process in surprising ways. Abstract:A feasible way is developed to prepare Au core/Au-Ag alloy shell nanorods (Au@Au(x)Ag(1-x) NRs) based on co-reduction of gold and silver ions under the guidance of Au NRs templates. Alloy nanorods with a wide composition range (x tunable from 0 to 1) are obtained. The Ag+/Au3+ ratios are found to affect the detailed morphology of the endcaps, which is responsible for the abnormal red-shift of localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) mode. In consensus with theoretical prediction, dielectric sensitivity of the alloy NRs is mainly determined by the maximum of the LSPR band. Due to the change in electron structure, the alloy shells exhibit lower SERS activities than pure Ag shell.

Abstract:Ag nanorods with finely controllable aspect ratios (especially 1–5) were synthesized in high yield via an effective one-step aqueous-phase method, in which the longitudinal plasmon modes in visible and infrared regions of short Ag nanorods were well adjustable. Meanwhile, excitation wavelength- and excitation fluence-dependent electronic dynamics of short Ag nanorods were acquired and were found to be regular. This suggested that short Ag nanorods would have great potential in plasmonic and photoelectronic fields.

Abstract:A simple sonochemical route was developed for the crystal growth of uniform silver nanoplates and ringlike gold nanocrystals in a N,N-dimethylformamide solution. The platelike structures were generated from the selective growth on different crystal planes in the presence of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) and the ultrasonic-assisted Ostwald ripening processes. The silver nanoplates in solution served as the templates for the synthesis of ringlike gold crystals via a displacement reaction. Both the silver nanoplates and gold nanorings were highly oriented single crystals with (111) planes as the basal planes.

Abstract:Vertically aligned silver nanorods were good substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensitivity of nanorods can be regulated through the method that the silver nanorod is divided into four uniform silver sections using five uniform silicon sections. And the length of silicon sections is the key factor in regulating the surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensitivity. In the regulation, the best surface-enhanced Raman scattering performance is about 4 times as large as the worst performance. The study provides an effective way to regulate the surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensitivity of silver nanorods and its possible explanation about mechanism.

Abstract:Arrays of vertically aligned, single crystalline silver nanorods were deposited on silicon substrates via the glancing angle deposition technique using an e-beam system. The single crystalline Ag nanorods are several tens of nanometres in diameter and several hundred nanometres in length and could serve as excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates. Using these nanorods, Rhodamine 6G molecules can be detected to a concentration limit of 10(-14) mol L(-1), showing the possibility of applications in the trace amount detection of organics.

Abstract:A high yield of silver nanotubes with large aspect ratio were conveniently synthesized via an organic-assist solvothermal preparation technique using polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as a capping reagent and architecture soft-template. The molecular ratio between the repeating unit of PVP and AgNO3 plays a crucial role in determining the geometric shape of the product. Such novel-type Ag nanotubes were self-assembled by Ag nanoparticles, which had largely similar crystallographic orientation, forming a texture. The fact that nanoparticles without anisotropic crystal structures can form such superstructures by self-assembly may open a window for understanding a range of nanotube formation processes.
