Abstract:Artificial electromagnetic materials can be utilized to manipulate light propagations, and have potential applications in designs of photonic and quantum optical devices. Multilevel quantum coherent media is one kind of such artificial electromagnetic materials. Some physically interesting effects due to the combination of quantum coherence and quantum vacuum, i.e., the tunable quantum coherent effects, in which the quantum-vacuum fluctuation field is involved, are suggested. Two topics are addressed: i) the spontaneous emission inhibition due to quantum interference in a three-level system; ii) the quantum light-induced potentials for coherent manipulation of atomic matter waves. The light-induced quantum guiding potentials could be utilized to cool and trap atoms, and may be used for the development of new techniques of atom fibers and atom chips, where the coherent manipulation of atomic matter waves is needed. In addition, the physical foundation of quantum coherence is analyzed and its counterparts in other fields are suggested. It is well known that the mechanism of atomic CPT (coherent population trapping) and EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency) is the quantum destructive interference. However, there are some interesting analogues in field theory such as quark mixing mechanism that also exhibits such a phase coherence. We compare the quantum interferences of the atomic CPT with the quark mixing (and GIM mechanism) in the weak interaction. It is shown that the quantum destructive interference presented here is one of the common characteristics of many quantum coherent processes. The scheme presented here may have a potential significance in both pure and applied physics, e.g., providing us with a new insight into the physical essence of quantum coherence in various physical processes, and applying the quantum-vacuum effects to the development of new photonic devices.
