Abstract:Concrete-filled circular steel tubes (CFT) have recently gained significant attention for their enhanced strength and ductility over the conventional steel and reinforced concrete construction. The concrete compressive strength is significantly increased by the lateral confinement provided by the steel tube and local buckling of the steel tube is restrained by the concrete infill. This paper investigates the further enhancement of these composite actions due to post-tensioning the concrete cores inside circular steel tubes. The flexural behavior of a post-tensioned CFT as well as a non-post-tensioned CFT was studied experimentally and analytically. A numerical algorithm for predicting the moment capacities of circular CFT, with or without the post-tensioning effects, has been validated against the test results by the authors as well as those published in the literature.

Abstract:Concrete filled tubular (CFT) columns are being more and more utilized in construction of tall building sand bridges. The first author recently developed a new CFT column system, or the confined concrete filled tubes (CCFT), and proved it to have excellent load carrying capacity and ductility, by static and simulated seismic loading tests. This paper deals with the impact effects on CFT and CUT stub columns. The responses of concrete filled steel tubes (CFT) and the confined concrete filled steel tubes (CCFT) at high strain rates were investigated using a high speed gas gun. Experimental parameters included the confinement details and impact speed. Dynamic strains and the failure patterns are discussed. The test results demonstrate the effectiveness of lateral confinement to improve the dynamic impact behavior of CFT columns.

Abstract:Concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) structures are widely used in various types of buildings and bridges. Confined concrete tube (CCFT) is a new type of structural column originally proposed in previous work. This paper reports the impact testing results of the CFT and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) confined CFT stub columns under different impacting energy levels, conducted using a large-capacity drop-hammer machine. The time history curves of impacting force and deformation time history curves as well as failure patterns are investigated. The results indicate that the failure patterns are related to the impact energy. Increasing the thickness of the steel tube and providing additional transverse confinement by CFRP can enhance the impact-resistant behavior. Finally, the dynamic analysis software ANSYS/LS-DYNA is used to simulate the impact behaviors of the CFT and CCFT specimens, and the simulation results are reasonable compared with the test results. Experimental research on seismic performance of confined concrete filled tubular columns under cyclic loading

Abstract:This paper studied an innovative concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) column system originally proposed by Xiao et al. The new CFT system, named as confined CFT or CCFT, was developed for improving seismic design of steel and concrete composite structures. The design concept is based on fundamental mechanics, aimed at controlling the local buckling of the steel tube and confining the concrete in the potential plastic hinge regions of a CFT column. To achieve this, several efficient details of transverse confinement including carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP), steel collar and reinforced concrete (RC) cover were proposed and utilized as additional confinement for CCFT columns, and the results of simulated seismic loading tests validated that the new type of CFT column system can provide excellent seismic performance. The concept of CCFT is most suitable for the CFT columns or CFT arches which have high demand for load carrying capacity and ductility, and is also suitable for retrofitting or repairing existing CFT structures.

Abstract:This paper introduces an innovative concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) column structure for improved anti-seismic design of steel-concrete composite structures. Based on fundamental mechanics, the design concept is aimed at controlling the local buckling of the steel tube and confining the concrete at the potential plastic hinge regions of a CFST column. To achieve this, several efficient details of transverse confinement will be examined. This type of CFST column is expected to overcome many disadvantages of the conventional CFST column and provide the ideal choice for structural design of tall buildings, particularly for seismic regions.

Comparisons were also made between the test results and the analytical results using LS-DYNA. The trend of the stress wave propagation in the CFT specimen was reasonably well predicted.

Abstract:This paper presents a study to introduce and experimentally validate an innovative concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) column system, named as confined CFT or CCFT, for improved seismic design of steel and concrete composite structures. Based on fundamental mechanics, the concept is aimed at controlling the focal buckling of the steel tube and confining the concrete in the potential plastic hinge regions of a CFT column. To achieve this, several efficient details of transverse confinement are proposed. In the first phase of the study, carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic as additional confinement of CCFT columns was examined through experimental testing. As demonstrated from the results of axial compression tests and seismic loading tests, the new type of CFT column system can provide excellent seismic performance. The complicated local buckling and confinement mechanisms were examined using a proposed simple analytical model.

Abstract:The concrete filled narrow rectangular steel tube (CFNRST) member is being increasingly used in the apartment buildings in China. Experimental study is conducted on the behavior of CFNRST members subjected to combined compression and uniaxial bending about the weak axis. Eleven specimens were fabricated considering the variation of key parameters including the slenderness, the width/height ratio of cross-section and eccentricity of compression. Comparisons are made between the predictions of representative solutions of design codes and the test results to examine their capacity for predicting the ultimate load of CFNRST members. New solutions with modifications on two existing solutions are proposed for the ultimate load of CFNRST members subjected to combined compression and uniaxial bending. Good agreements are achieved between the predictions of the proposed solutions and test results.

Abstract:Concrete filled steel tube structures have superior mechanical properties, so have a widely used in high-rise buildings, industrial plants, power engineering and bridge engineering. Currently, in addition to round section, the square, rectangular and polygon symmetrical sections are also used. For various sections, such as solid and hollow, round and polygon symmetrical sections, only the "CFST Unified Design Equations" method can have the function to use one same form to design them all. The new design code is based on the "CFST Unified Design Equations" method, which is the first one in the world to design all the sections in one same form, so innovative. This paper describes the contents which were modified and some new research in the "new technical". Mainly including the shear and torsion behavior of CFST, seismic performance, impact resistance and fire resistance and so on.

Abstract:Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) structure offers numerous structural benefits, and has been widely used in civil engineering structures. This paper reviews the development of the family of concrete-filled steel tubular structures to date and draws a research framework on CFST members. The research development on CFST structural members in most recent years, particularly in China, is summarized and discussed. The current design approaches from various countries are examined briefly. Some projects in China utilizing CFST members are also introduced. Finally, some concluding remarks are made for CFST members.

Abstract:Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) structures have several structural and constructional benefits, which are widely recognized and have led to an increased use in modern engineerings. A brief introduction to application and research on concrete-filled steel tubes are introduced in this paper, several key issues on designing CFST structures are presented, including members subjected to static loading and long-term loading; seismic behaviours; fire resistence design and damage evaluation after exposure to fire, pre-stress effect in steel tubes and concrete compaction effect. Some new types CFST members, such as CFSTs with thin-walled steel tubes or high-performance concrete used, concrete-filled double skin steel tubular (CFDST) as well as FRP-confined CFST members and etc. are introduced. Finally, some recent reseach developments on CFST column-to-beam connections, frames and hybrid structures using CFST members are generally described in this paper.

Abstract:A series of tests on concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs) with reinforcing bars or angles under axial tension were conducted in this study. In total, thirteen full scale specimens having length of 4000mm and outer diameter of 400mm were tested. The steel tubes were fabricated from structural steel with nominal yield strength of 460MPa and nominal plate thickness of 4 or 6mm. Reinforcing bars or angles were placed inside the steel tube before the filling of concrete. The behaviour and strengths of CFSTs with reinforcing bars or angles under axial tension were investigated. The load-axial displacement curves and load-strain curves were obtained. The cracks in the core concrete were also investigated from the failure specimens. The tensile strengths are compared with the design strengths calculated using the current AISC standard. Design equations were proposed for the tensile strengths and elastic tensile stiffness of CFSTs with reinforcing bars or angles.

Abstract:Concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) consists of outer steel tube and concrete in-filled, which combines the merits of steel and concrete. This kind of composite member has various advantages, i.e., high strength and high ductility, favorable cyclic behaviour, high fire resistance and excellent constructability, have been recognized all over the world. Nowadays CFST has been widely used in construction, including many industrial facilities. This paper gives a brief review on the investigations of seismic behaviour of CFST members, joints, planar frames, hybrid walls and high-rise buildings, especially in China. The development of concrete-filled steel tubular members’ family is also introduced. Some industrial projects utilizing CFST members are also presented.

Abstract:A series of bending tests of thin-walled concrete-filled cold-formed steel tubes(CFST) were presented in this study. A total of 4 specimens were tested, two square specimens and two rectangular specimens, with width to wall thickness ratio ranging from 50 to 100. The failure mode and ultimate capacity of test specimens were obtained. A novel nonlinear analytical model was developed for the hin-walled CFSTs under bending. Nonlinear constitutive models of the confined concrete and steel tube, corner strength enhancement of the steel cross-sections, welding residual stress and local buckling were considered in the developed model. The predicted capacity calculated using the model proposed and it si shown that the model predictions agreed with the test result well. In addition, predictions from current AISC standard, Eurocode 4 and model proposed by other researcher were also compared with the test results.

Studies on Constitutive Relationship for Concrete Filled Steel Tube

Abstract:Results obtained from previous related researches were used to study the constitutive relationship of concrete filled steel tube (CFST) by simplifying CFST as a kind of composite material. An analytical model for the constitutive relationship of CFST is proposed which takes into account the strain energy principle and whose basic assumptions based well in theory and easy for parameters determination. Examples were used to validate the analysis model and determine the effects of changing strength of the materials and steel ratio on the elastic coefficients. The results obtained from this work were compared with the calculated (data) reported by other researchers. Good agreement was observed between the values using the proposed model and the calculated results. It is shown that the proposed model can accurately simulate the physical properties of the composite structure and can be used for further integral analysis of the CCFT.

Abstract:In recent years, various types of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns were proposed and they have been widely used in engineering practice. Considering the great confinement effect of corrugated steel plate on the concrete, a novel type of CFST column called concrete-filled corrugated steel tubular (CFCST) column was proposed. The CFCST column consists of horizontally corrugated steel plates, corner steel bars and infilled concrete. In this paper, the stability performance of CFCST columns is studied. Firstly, a finite element (FE) model was developed for numerical simulation. The ultimate resistances, load-displacement curves and failure modes obtained from the FE models were compared with previous test results to verify the validity of the FE model. Subsequently, seven sets of numerical examples were analyzed to investigate the impact of key parameters on the global stability performance of CFCST columns. These examples involved variations in geometric dimensions, corrugation shapes and material strengths. Finally, the stability coefficients φ of CFCST columns obtained from FE numerical simulation were compared to several existing stability curves. On this basis, a new stability curve was proposed for predicting the global stability resistance of CFCST columns with good accuracy and reasonable redundancy.

Abstract:A series of bending tests of thin-walled concrete-filled steel tubes (CFST) were presented in this study. A total of 4 specimens were tested, two square specimens and two rectangular specimens, with width to wall thickness ratio ranging from 50 to 100. The load–displacement curves, failure mode and ultimate capacity of test specimens were obtained. An analytical model was developed for the thin-walled CFSTs subjected to bending. Material properties of confined concrete, corner strength enhancement of cold-formed steel sections, residual stresses and plate local buckling were considered in the developed model. The proposed model was able to predict the behavior and strengths of test specimens with reasonable accuracy. In addition, the suitability of current AISC standard, Eurocode 4 and Han's model for thin-walled CFSTs subjected to bending was also evaluated.
