Abstract:Nanocrystalline tungsten oxide doped titanium dioxide (WOx-TiO2) powders were prepared by TiCl4 hydrolysis and characterized by XRD, XPS, UV-Vis absorption spectra and TEM. Results showed that WO, not only hindered the growth of TiO2 particles but also greatly increased the transformation temperature (>800 degrees C) from anatase to rutile during sintering; the dominant fraction of tungsten oxides was non-stoichiometric tungsten oxide (WxOy) with Wn+ (4<n<6), which could easily substitute Ti4+ in the lattice of TiO2. The light absorption band of TiO2 changed from the near UV to the visible light range (2.68 eV in 1.0 %WOx-TiO2) because of the tungsten impurity energy level induced by WxTi1-xO2. The photocatalysis experiments demonstrated that the MB in aqueous solution was successfully degraded within 1h using WOx-TiO2 with an optimal WOx dosage of 1% under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:A facile and convenient method has been developed to prepare N-doped TiO2 visible light nanocatalysts, which is performed by a solid-state calcination of one-dimensional titanate nanotubes with an inorganic ammonium salt (NH4Cl). The ion-exchange reaction between layered nanotubes and NH4Cl contributes to the phase transition to crystalline TiO2 combined with N doping. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy are carried out to study the phase evolution, compositions, and morphologies of obtained samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the N dopant in TiO2 is assigned to the interstitial NHx species. Both the phase transition and N doping are further confirmed by UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra. All N-doped TiO2 materials exhibit significantly higher visible light activities than that of the parent nanotubes for degrading rhodamine B. In addition, the N-doped TiO2 nanocatalyst holds a strong stability and durability for the removal of organic pollutions.

Abstract:A boron/ferrum/cerium/titania photocatalyst with visible-light-induced performance was prepared by the conventional sol–gel method, in which tetrabutyl titanate (Ti(O-nC4H9)4) was used as the precursor and boric acid (H3BO3), ferric nitrate enneahydrate (Fe(NO3)3·9H2O), and cerium nitrate hexahydrate (Ce(NO3)3·6H2O) were the sources of boron, ferrum, and cerium, respectively. The microstructure and optical property of the photocatalyst were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherm, and UV–vis diffusive reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). It was found that the as-prepared photocatalyst composed of anatase and that the presence of impurities could retard phase transformation of TiO2 from anatase to rutile at elevated temperatures and could prohibit growth of polycrystalline, which favored forming photocatalyst with large surface area. Degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) under visible light illumination was used to evaluate the photocatalytic activity. Comparative investigations showed that photocatalytic performance of the boron/ferrum/cerium/titania photocatalyst was the highest among the all test samples. It was testified that boron doping led to the band gap narrow and the response to visible light, and that ferrum and cerium impurities, which presented in the forms of FeO/Fe2O3 and Ce2O3/CeO2, dispersed on the surface of TiO2, suppressed the electron and hole recombination, and resulted in the enhancement of catalytic performance. The results exhibited that the synergistic effects of boron, ferrum and cerium played an important role in the band gap narrow and the increase of photoactivity.

Abstract:The sol–gel route was employed to prepare a titania/silica photocatalyst co-doped with boron and ferrum. The microstructure and the optical property of the photocatalyst were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis diffusive reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherm. The decomposition of phenol under visible light irradiation was used as probe reaction to evaluate the photocatalytic activity. The results revealed that the dopants could inhibit phase transformation of TiO2, and that there were intimate molecule-level interactions between titania and silica. The doping boron led to the response to visible light. The doping ferrum, which existed in the form of Fe2O3 and dispersed on the surface of TiO2, increased photoquantum efficiency and resulted in the enhancement of catalytic performance. The photocatalytic activity related to the annealing temperature and component. The synergistic effects of co-doping and intimate interaction between titania and silica were responsible for the increase of photoactivity.

Abstract:The V-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were successfully prepared by sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy respectively. It is found that doping V can shift the absorption edge to the visible light region and decrease the recombination of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. Then the photo-absorption and photocatalytic activity were greatly improved. The optimal doping concentration is 0.5% due to synergetic effect of the recombination of electron-hole pairs and adsorption of dyes molecules at the surface of samples.

Abstract:Vanadium-doped titania (TiO2) nanocrystalline was obtained at room temperature by cohydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate and vanadium (IV) oxyacetyl acetonate in large amount of water. The shape of crystal grains formed at room temperature is irregular, and their average size is <10 nm. X-ray diffractometer, high-resolution transmission electron microscope, ultraviolet (UV)/Vis spectrometer, energy dispersion spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer were used to study the effects of vanadium amount, pH value, and water dosage on the crystallization behavior, optical properties, and photocatalytic activity of thus-obtained vanadium-doped TiO2. The results showed that enough acidity at least pH (pH=2) and excessive water at least water dosage r=120 are necessary to obtain crystallized vanadium-doped TiO2 at room temperature. Optical absorption results showed that the absorption edge of vanadium-doped TiO2 shifted to longer wavelength comparing with the counterpart without vanadium. Thus-prepared vanadium-doped TiO2 nanocrystallines can utilize visible light well. The photodegradation results revealed that thus-prepared vanadium-doped TiO2 nanocrystalline has photocatalytic activity under daylight irradiation.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide is a photocatalytic substance of great practical importance. However, with its bandgap in the ultraviolet (UV) regime, native forms (undoped) of TiO2 generally exhibits poor photocatalytic activities under visible light. Here we report a facile one-step low-temperature method to treat native TiO2 with NaH in a solution-based protocol. The NaH treatment effectively induces the Ti(III) species and oxygen vacancies into the TiO2 host lattice, and enables the bandgap of TiO2 to be conveniently adjusted from the UV region to the red end of the visible spectrum. The modified TiO2 exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic capability under visible light, and lead to faster photo-degradation of organic chemical material. Compared with other ways to reduce the bandgap of TiO2, the approach reported here provides unique advantages for safe, large-scale and economic production of narrow-bandgap TiO2 materials.
Characterization and photocatalytic activity of Ni-doped tiO2 nano photocatalysts prepared by low temperature combustion synthesis]

Abstract:Ni-doped TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared by low temperature combustion synthesis and some properties, such as optical absorption, crystal type, grain size distribution and chemistry transformation during temperature rising were characterized by UV-Vis DRS, X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser light dispersion grain size measurement machine and TG-DSC respectively. The photocatalytic activities of the prepared photocatalysts under visible light irradiation were evaluated by monitoring the degradation of methylene blue dye, a probe pollutant. The results indicate that the Ni-doped TiO2 photocatalysts prepared by low temperature combustion synthesis shift the optical absorption threshold to visible light, the band gap of 0.4 Ni-TiO2 (atomic ratio) is 2.3 eV, which corresponds to a 564 nm threshold in the visible light range. The crystal type of photocatalyst is anatase TiO2 and the content of NiTiO3 rise with the increase of Ni dopant. The grain size of photocatalyst distributes from 50 to 150nm, which account for 96.9% of entire quantity. During temperature rising, the TiO2 phase in photocatalyst transforms from amorphous structure to anatase and NiTiO3 crystallites appear at 445.2 degrees C. After 150 min visible light irradiation, 93.9% of methylene blue dye are degraded over 0.4 Ni-TiO2 photocatalyst. The photocatalytic activity of Ni doped TiO2 is higher than that of P25 under identical conditions.

Abstract:The pure and WO3-doped TiO2 nanoparticles photocatalyst was prepared by chemical precipitation,in which titanium tetrachloride was used as Ti-precursor,ammonia as precipitant and sodium tungstate as doping donor.The samples was characterized by XRD and FTIR.The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the photocatalytic decomposition of phenol under 20 W UV light irradiation,The Effects of calcinated temperature and WO3-doped concentration on the activity was investigated.The results showed that WO3 doping retards the growth of grain size.The photocatalytic activity of pure TiO2 is optital when the sample was calcined at 450℃,The WO3-TiO2 photocatalysts show better photocatalytic activity.The optimum concentration of WO3 is 1%(mole fracition).

Abstract:Titania thin films with ordered nanostructures are of general interest in fields of photocatalysis, gas sensors, energy storages, energy conversions, etc. In this study, we report a low‐temperature crystallization and the simultaneously occurred morphology change of titania thin films in a dilute H2SO4 solution. Amorphous titania nanowire arrays were fabricated by a Ti–H2O2 interaction, which transformed to crystallized nanoflower arrays through a dissolution–precipitation route during the subsequent acid treatments. The nanoflowers were doped with nitrogen and also incorporated with sulfate ions. An increasing H2SO4 concentration resulted in larger nanoflowers with higher anatase content; but the crystallinity reduced. The low‐temperature‐derived nanoflower arrays possessed high density of surface hydroxyl groups and defect VO‐Ti3+ sites, which contributed to a high absorption and enhanced photodegradation efficiency of rhodamine B in water under the illumination of UV–visible light during the first several runs of photocatalytic evaluations. The beneficial surface defects diminished gradually with increasing runs; however, the average reaction rate constants of the acid treated films are still superior to that of the calcinated one, which can be attributed to several structural parameters such as the nanoflower morphology, incorporation of sulfate ions, and the coexistence of anatase and rutile.

Abstract:An efficient photocatalytic reactor to remove pollutants from either water or air relies on highly active photocatalytic thin films on appropriate substrates, which contribute to both light harvesting and pollutant molecules transfer. In this investigation, few-layer titanate nanobelts were deposited on metallic Ti mesh using hydrogen peroxide solution, which were then subjected to a subsequent hot water treatment to achieve crystallized titania nanorod arrays. The three-dimensional arrays of nanorods formed on Ti mesh (three layers overlapped) exhibited an exceptional high efficiency when utilized to assist photodegradation of rhodamine B in water under UV light illumination, which is 25 times that of P25 film, and even 1.3 times that of P25 nanoparticles in a slurry system. For photodegradation of phenol in water, the three-layer Ti mesh also exhibited a reaction rate constant 6.9 times that of P25 film. The reduced band gap, abundant surface hydroxyl groups, and mixed phase effects arising from the low temperature approach contribute to the high photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:V2O5 nanocrystalline was prepared by sol-gel method in a system with large amount of water. The structure and morphology of the as-prepared samples were characterized by XRD and TEM. The results show when the pH was <= 3, the crystallinity and crystal size of the as-prepared samples increased with decreasing pH. When the molar ratio of water to vanadium oxyacetyl acetonate (W) was more than 200, the crystal size of the as-prepared sample increased with increasing W. When W was >= 200, and pH was <= 1, V2O5 center dot 1.6H(2)O nanocrystallines were obtained at a low temperature of 50 degrees C. Post-heat-treatment caused the decrease of crystal intensity of V2O5 center dot 1.6H(2)O, and increase of crystal intensity of V2O5. After post-heat-treat at 400 degrees C, pure V2O5 was obtained. The average size of V2O5 nanocrystalline was about 8 nm at 400 degrees C.

Abstract:TiO2 nanocrystallines with a size of 3–7 nm have been synthesized by the sol–gel method with excessive water at a low temperature of about 50°C. The effects of amount of water and pH on the formation of sols and powders containing TiO2 nanocrystallines were investigated by X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy, and high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that a pure anatase phase was formed at pH 1, in contrast to the formation of particles with a mixture of anatase and brookite phases at pH 2–7. Moreover, at pH 1, the intensity of the XRD peaks and the crystal size increased with increasing water content when the water ratio increased from 40 to 100. Whereas the crystal intensity remained invariant, the crystal size still increased when the water ratio increased from 100 to 400. The photocatalytic activity was also investigated. It was shown that when the water ratio was below 100, the photocatalytic activity increased with increasing water content. Further increase of the water content decreased the photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic activity decreased with increasing pH. All samples with pH=1 showed better photocatalytic activity than Degussa P25. Mechanisms for the formation of the TiO2 nanocrystalline particles at such a low temperature were also discussed.

Abstract:The V-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by sol-gel method,using tetrabutyl titanate as Ti-precursor,ammonium metavanadate as doping-ion donor.The crystallization temperature and structure of the photocatalyst were characterized via thermogravimtry-differential scanning calorimetry(TGA-DSC)、X-ray diffraction(XRD),specific surface area analysis(BET) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The results show that V doping leads to crystal lattice distortion,promotes the phase transformation from anatase to rutile of TiO2,inhibits the growth of grain size and enlarges specific surface area.The nanoparticles is uniform and similar spherical.The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the decomposition of methylene blue.The influence of V-doped concentration and calcined temperature on the activity has been discussed.It was found that the degradation of methyl bule on V-doped TiO2 nanoparticles follows first-order kinetics.V4+ in the lattice serves as charge transfer species,thus the recombination of the photon photon-induced electron-hole pair is suppressed more efficiently,and more holes can reach surface to cause oxidation reaction,and enhances the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles.The nanoparticles of 1.5 mol% V-doped TiO2 and calcined at 450 ℃ hold the best photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Vanadium doped titania hollow microspheres were successfully prepared using polystyrene latex particles as template and using organmetallic Ti (IV) as precursor. The resulting samples were characterized by FT-IR,SEM,TEM, XRD and UV-Vis DRS. The results show that the morphology of titania hollow microspheres do not exhibit remarkable change when adding low concentration of vanadium. The wall thickness of these hollow microspheres is in the range from 20nm to 30nm. The vanadium promotes the phase transformation of TiO(2) hollow microsphere from anatase to rutile phase. With increasing concentration of vanadium, the adsorption edge of as-prepared titania hollow microspheres show stronger absorbance of light with longer wavelength. The moderately vanadium doped titania hollow microspheres(1.0%) exhibit better photocatalytic activity for the decomposition of methyl orange in aqueous solution.

Abstract:A visible-light-active TiO2 photocatalyst was prepared through nitrogen doping, employing triethylamine as nitrogen source, by a low temperature hydrothermal method without further calcinations. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectra. A shift of the absorption edge to a lower energy and a stronger absorption in the visible-light region were observed in the N-TiO2 samples. Comparing to P25 and undoped TiO2, greatly improved photocatalytic activity, decomposing methyl orange dye solutions under visible-light irradiation, was obtained as a result of the doping of nitrogen into the titania system, that was evidenced by the formation of O–Ti–N bonds. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of N-TiO2 was strongly affected by the hydrothermal temperature and pH value in the process of preparing the samples.

Abstract:Titania with nanostructures has attracted considerable attention due to its potential use in catalysts, gas sensors, photovoltaic cells, photonic crystals, etc. This paper reports the synthesis of titania nanoflowers by simply oxidizing pure titanium with hydrogen peroxide solutions containing hexamethylenetetramine and nitric acid at a low temperature of 353 K. Titania nanoflowers with the crystal structure of anatase or a mixture of anatase and rutile were obtained after a subsequent thermal treatment to crystallize the as-precipitated amorphous structure. Photocatalytic tests revealed an excellent photocatalytic property of the titania nanoflowers.
