Abstract:The TiZrNb metal-matrix composites reinforced by in-situ formed borides were produced by vacuum arc melting using different amount of TiB2 (0.2, 2.0 and 4.4 wt%). Structure, mechanical properties and bio-compatibility of the composites were studied. The initial microstructures of the composites were composed of the bcc TiZrNb matrix and needle-like (Ti, Nb) B particles the volume fraction of which was similar to 1.0%, 6.8% and 13.2%, respectively. Besides a small amount of the omega phase particles measuring similar to 10 nm were found in the matrix of all the composites. Compression test at room temperature showed that the minimum content of the borides did not have noticeable strengthening effect on mechanical properties of the composite. An increase in the amount of (Ti, Nb) B to 6.8 vol% resulted in an increase in the yield stress by 22% to similar to 900 MPa without a visible decrease in ductility. The composite with 13.2 vol% of the borides showed the yield strength of 1010 MPa and compression ductility (deformation till fracture) of 9% that can be associated with a hypereutectic composition and appearance of coarse particles of primary (Ti, Nb) B. Evaluation of main strengthening mechanisms suggested that the load transfer strengthening contributed mainly to the overall strength of the composite. Analysis of biocompatibility suggests some decrease in the proliferation rate of mesenchymal stem cells with an increase in the borides amount. (c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
PREPARATION AND INTERFACE ANALYSIS OF ZrB2/Al2O3 COMPOSITE POWDERS

Abstract:The combustion synthesis reaction with reductive process was used to produce ZrB2/Al2O3 composite powders from B2O3-ZrO2-Al system. The phases, chemical compositions and interfaces of the composite powders were characterized and analysed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and high resolution electron microscope (HRTEM). The results show that Zr, B, Al and O elements exist in composite powders as ZrB2 and Al2O3. The ZrB2 and Al2O3 are the primary phase in the composite powders. The presence of a very small amount of ZrO2 is considered to be unreacted zirconium oxide powders. TEM and HRTEM observations of interface of the composite powders indicate that the good interfacial bonding states are formed between the ZrB2 and Al2O3 particle. It can be suggested to be related to the crystallization process of the ZrB2 particles.

Abstract:The effect of boride content on the microstructure, electrical conductivity, and mechanical properties of TiB2-MB2/Cu composites (M=Cr, Mo, and Zr) was systematically investigated. The composites were prepared via spark plasma sintering. The results indicated that the double borides were uniformly distributed in the Cu matrix without visible agglomeration, and excellent interfacial bonding was achieved between the borides and the Cu matrix. The electrical conductivity of the Cu composite with 5 wt.% TiB2 and 15 wt.% ZrB2 increased by 503 % compared to the Cu-20 wt.% TiB2 composite. However, the hardness of the Cu composite with 5 wt.% TiB2 and 15 wt.% ZrB2 decreased by only 22 %. The wear resistance of the composites was significantly enhanced due to the synergistic effect of the dual-phase boride particles. The wear resistance of the Cu composite with 5 wt.% TiB2 and 15 wt.% ZrB2 was 4.12 times higher than that of the Cu-20 wt.% TiB2 composite standard sample when tested under an applied load of 10 N. The worn surface of the composites exhibited minimal roughness. Therefore, the Cu matrix composites with dual-phase borides achieved desirable comprehensive performance in terms of electrical, mechanical, and tribological properties.
Synthesis and Analysis of Boride Ceramic Powders

Abstract:Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis method with reductive process was used to produce TiB_(2),TiB_(2)-Al_(2)O_(3) and ZrB_(2)-Al_(2)O_(3) boride ceramic powders.X-ray diffraction,XPS,SEM and TEM analysis methods were adopted to characterize the microstructure of synthesized powders.The results showed that TiB_(2),ZrB_(2)and Al_(2)O_(3) existed as primary crystalline phase in synthesized powders and good interfaces formed between particles.By comparison,the particle size distribution of TiB_(2) monolithic powder was wider.Owing to the high temperature during SHS,most of them formed as aggregates and led to large macroscopic particle size(5 μm).While the particle size distributions of TiB_(2)-Al_(2)O_(3)and ZrB_(2)-Al_(2)O_(3) composite powders wereobviously narrow,those of free-agglomerate and the composite particles become decreased.It was suggested that it was mainly related to the good interface formation between different particles in composite powders during the synthesis reaction.

Abstract:To adjust the kinds of borides and improve the mechanical properties, different concentrations of boron were added to the Ti47.5Al2.0Cr2.0Nb alloy by arc melting, and the phase composition, lamellar colony, elemental distribution and compressive properties were investigated. Results show that when the boron concentration increases to 2.0 at.%, dendritic crystals are transformed into equiaxed crystals. The size of the lamellar colony decreases from 232.9 to 92.3 mu m with the boron content increases from 0 to 3.0 at.%. After adding boron, borides with two distinct morphologies appear (curved and bar borides), and then the B2 phase disappears. With the increase of boron content, the percentages of curved boride and bar boride are changed, the former decreases and the latter increases. During the solidification process, the constitutional undercooling, at the solidification front and the nucleation particles of borides increase with increasing boron content. The refined microstructure and formation of boride improve the uniformity of the elemental distribution. Compressive results show that the maximum strength is 2228.2 MPa with 1.5 at.% B, and the maximum strain is 29.1% with 2.0 at.% B. The grain refinement strengthening, solid-solution strengthening of Nb and Cr, and the precipitation strengthening of borides are the main reasons for the improved compressive properties. The fracture morphology is a mixed fracture mode which contains both transbar fracture and inter-bar fracture.

Abstract:The self-propagating high-temperature synthesis with reductive process was used to synthesize ZrB2-Al2O3 composite powder. The crystalline phase, morphology and microstructure were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. Results show that ZrB2 and Al2O3 exist in the form of primary crystalline phase in composite powders and there is a good interfacial bonding between ZrB2 and Al2O3. Analysis indicates that it is related to the crystallization process of ZrB2 on the surface of Al2O3 particle.

Abstract:The structure and major properties of boron carbide,preparation methods of boron carbide coating and application status and prospect were reviewed.The features of the coating preparation methods such as physical vapor deposition,chemical vapor deposition,plasma spray,gas conversion,reaction-sinter,plasma immersion ion processing and the characteristics of coatings prepared by different methods were discussed.How to prepare the homogeneous boron carbide coating with higher density,higher combined strength between coating and substrate and lower stress in the coating is the key study in the future.
Effects of TiAl Alloy as a Binder on Cubic Boron Nitride Composites

Abstract:Owing to their extreme hardness, cubic boron nitride (cBN) composites are widely used in cutting applications. The performance of cBN composites is closely related to the characteristics of the binder. Therefore, novel binders must be developed to improve the performance of cBN composites. In the present work, TiAl intermetallics were used as binders to fabricate cBN composites by employing a high-temperature and high-pressure sintering method. The phase transformation, sintering reaction mechanism, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of the resultant cBN composites were investigated. It was found that during the sintering process, Ti atoms preferentially reacted with boron nitride particles, whereas Al atoms enriched and transformed into TiAl3 phases and formed cBN/AlN, AlB2/TiN, and TiB2/TiAl3-layered structures eventually. The composites maintained good oxidation resistance at 1200 °C. A decrease in the particle size of the TiAl binder improved the uniformity of particle size distribution and increased the flexural strength of the composites.

Abstract:A new process was used to improve microstructure homogeneity of ZrO2-BN composites. Boric acid was deposited on the surface of ZrO2 particles by heterogeneous precipitation method from aqueous solution of boron oxide under the action of heat by evaporation. In order to improve the microstructure homogeneity, the mixture powder was stirred over-vigorously until transforming into the highly viscosity slurry. Subsequently, the obtained mixture powders were dried, nitrided at 900 degrees C in ammonia and crystallized at 1500 degrees C in nitrogen atmosphere to obtain in-situ synthesized BN coated on the surface of ZrO2 composite particles. Finally, ZrO2-BN composites incorporated with 30 vol. % BN were prepared by hot-pressing. The SEM microstructure and fracture surface of ZrO2-BN composites revealed that in-situ synthesis BN particles were dispersed in the ZrO2 matrix homogeneously.

Abstract:Two ZrB2-based composites were fabricated by hot-pressing with vacuum. ZrB2+20vol%SiC and ZrB2+20vol%SiC+8vol%TiB2 were selected as the starting compositions. The microstructures and phase constitutions of the composites were investigated and compared to these of monolithic ZrB2 material. For the ZrB2-based composites, with the addition of SiC particles, the excessive growth of ZrB2 materials is restricted and grain structure is refined. Meanwhile the fracture modes are changed, namely, from transgranular to mixed inter/transgranular. Strengthening mechanism is grain refining and the toughening mechanism is crack deflection, crack branching and grain refining. The role of TiB2 as an addition to the ZrB2 matrix was also examined and discussed.

Abstract:Transition metal diborides are an important component of ultra-high temperature ceramics with particularly attractive high-temperature performance. In order to promote the application of borides in the field of high-temperature protection, a single-phase (Ti,Zr,Hf)B 2 solid solution was synthesized, inspired by the concept of high-entropy effect. The mechanical, thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient of (Ti,Zr,Hf)B 2 ceramics were analyzed by experiments and First-principles calculations. Even compared with currently existing high-entropy diborides, the single-phase (Ti,Zr,Hf)B 2 showed a higher Vicker hardness (30.22 ± 2.43 GPa). Furthermore, it possessed lower thermal conductivity (7.2–11.0 W·m −1 ·K −1 ) at 25–1000 °C and higher thermal expansion coefficient (8.7 ×10 −6 K −1 ) at 25–1100 °C than transition metal diborides (TiB 2 , ZrB 2 , HfB 2 ). The high-temperature oxidation behavior of (Ti,Zr,Hf)B 2 ceramics was also investigated at 1000–1400 °C in air for 3 h. In this study, we provided a new strategy for designing transition diboride solid solutions.

Abstract:Boron carbide ceramics are excellent structural materials which have important applications in the civil, aero and military fields, owing to the properties of high hardness, high melting point and low density. The development and research status of boron carbides were summarized in this article. The densification and toughening mechanisms, the main difficulties of sintering boron carbides, were emphasized. The nano-particles reinforced boron carbide matrix composites can be fabricated by in-situ synthetic reaction and precursor pyrolysis, which are promising techniques for the preparation of high performance ceramics.

Abstract:<p>Due to special non‐metallic polar bond between the III group (with certain metallic properties) element boron (B) and the V group element nitrogen (N), boron nitride (BN) has unique physical and chemical properties such as strong high‐temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, heat conduction, electrical insulation and neutron absorption. Its unique lamellar, reticular and tubular morphologies and physicochemical properties make it attractive in the fields of adsorption, catalysis, hydrogen storage, thermal conduction, insulation, dielectric substrate of electronic devices, radiation protection, polymer composites, medicine, etc. Therefore, the synthesis and properties of BN derived materials become the main research hotspots of low‐dimensional nanomaterials. This paper reviews the synthetic methods, overall properties, and applications of BN nanostructures and nanocomposites. In addition, challenges and prospect of this kind of materials are discussed.</p>

Abstract:Zirconium diboride (ZrB2) is an important class of advanced ceramic material with excellent performance and good application prospect, but the oxidation restricts its application greatly. In order to improve the oxidation resistance of ZrB2 ceramics at high temperature, we coat Al2O3, Y2O3 and ZrO2 layers on the surface of ZrB2 particles to prepare the ZrB2@Al2O3, ZrB2@Y2O3 and ZrB2@ZrO2 composite particles via the chemical co-precipitation method. The results of XRD SEM and EDS strongly suggest that the coated composite particles are prepared successfully, while TG and DSC curves prove that the oxidation resistance of ZrB2 particles can be improved significantly by the proposed method.

Abstract:Zirconium carbide（ZrC） exhibits considerable potential for applications as aerospace thermal protection and the Generation-Ⅳ nuclear fuel inert materials due to its high melting point,exceptional hardness,good ablation resistance and low neutron absorption cross-section.Nevertheless,low sinterability of ZrC powders and poor fracture toughness and reliability of bulk ceramics limit their wide applications in extreme environments.This paper reviews the state of the art of preparation and properties of ZrC composites.Optimizing the sintering process and tailoring the chemical constituents of raw powders and sintering aids could improve sinterability to produce dense bulk ceramics.Different additives such as refractory metals,carbides,silicides,oxides,or carbon fibers are introduced into the ZrC matrix in order to improve fracture toughness,oxidation resistance or thermal shock resistance,etc.Further studies are needed to explore the effects of intrinsic defects（vacancies,dislocations,and grain or phase boundaries,etc.） and additives on microstructure and properties at elevated temperatures.
