Abstract:The sexual behavior of chrysanthemum gall midge,Rhopalomyia longicauda(Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) such as the release of sex pheromone and calling behavior, were studied indoors and in a field trapping experiment. The sex pheromone was collected with an organic solvent aided by a glass container of charcoal-purified air.Laboratory observations showed that most males emerged 1-2 h before females. After 5 min of emergence, virgin females began to extend their ovipositors and strongly attracted males.Delta-shaped traps baited with virgin females in the field attracted(233±16.3) males per day, whereas traps containing virgin males attracted 0 female and(1±0.6)male per day, indicating the presence of a female sex pheromone in R.longicauda.The Y type olfactometer test showed that sex pheromones in female solvent extract and female volatiles were both attractive to the males, indicating the presence of sex pheromone in female collections. There was no significant difference in attractive effect between two methods of collection.Male solvent extract and volatiles did not attract males.Gas chromatographic analysis showed that the peak level of sex pheromone component collected from volatiles of females was 2.86 times that collected by solvent extraction. An effective collection would be the basis for further identification of the sex pheromone of R.longicauda.
