Abstract:Thirty‐one children with ANLL were treated using the 12th‐ANLL Protocol of the Tokyo Children's Cancer Study Group incorporating an ACMP 2‐step regimen. Induction therapy consisted of two 4‐day courses of adriamycin (ADR) and cytosine arabinoside (ARA‐C) given with a 7‐day interval. Those patients who achieved remission were given one more course as early intensification. Late intensification consisted of a 5‐day course of ARA‐C and one dose of ADR which was repeated until the cumulative dosage of ADR reached 465 mg/m2 After this point, treatment was divided into 2 courses. Both courses included ARA‐C and one course had achlacinomycin in addition. Twenty‐seven children (87%) attained remission after one or two courses of induction therapy. Kaplan‐Meyer analysis revealed that the continuous complete remission rate and event‐free survival were 71% and 51%, respectively, 5 years after diagnosis. Toxicity was minimum with only one death during the remission. These results are encouraging and warrant further trials.
Identification of the Sex Pheromone of the Asparagus Moth, Parahypopta Caestrum (Lepidoptera, Cossidae)

Abstract:Chemical, electrophysiological, and field trapping experiments were carried out to identify the female-produced sex pheromone of the asparagus moth, Parahypopta caestrum , a very serious pests of asparagus cultivations in southern Europe. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and electroantennogram detection (GC-MS-EAD) analysis of hexane and solid-phase microextraction (SPME) extracts of sex pheromone glands of calling females consistently detected four compounds eliciting EAG responses in male moth antennae. According to their GC retention times, mass spectra, and comparative EAG analyses with reference standards, these EAD-active compounds were identified as ( Z )-9-tetradecenol ( Z 9-14:OH), ( Z )-5-tetradecenyl acetate ( Z 5-14:Ac), ( Z )-7-tetradecenyl acetate ( Z 7-14:Ac), and ( Z )-9-tetradecenyl acetate ( Z 9-14:Ac), respectively. In the SPME extracts from the head-space of individual abdominal tips, Z 9-14:Ac, Z 5-14:Ac, Z 7-14:Ac, and Z 9:14 OH were detected in the ratio of 82:9:5:4. In EAG dose-response experiments, Z 9-14:Ac was the strongest antennal stimulant at different doses tested. In field trapping experiments, Z 9-14:Ac, Z 7-14:Ac, and Z 5-14:Ac proven to be essential for male attraction and a their 85:5:10 blend loaded onto green rubber septum dispensers was significantly more effective than single-, two-, and any other three-component blend of these compounds. The addition of Z 9-14:OH to the optimal blend resulted in a significant reduction of male catches. The attractive blend here identified allowed for an effective and accurate monitoring of P. caestrum flight activity in southern Italy.

Abstract:Pheromone gland extracts of codling moth females were examined by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and electroantennography. Nine compounds elicited antennal activity: the main pheromone compound codlemone (E,E)‐8,10‐dodecadienol, the E,Z and Z,E isomers of codlemone, codlemone acetate (E,E)‐8,10‐dodecadienyl acetate, codlemone aldehyde (E,E)‐8,10‐dodecadienal, the monounsaturated alcohols (E)‐8‐dodecenol and (E)‐9‐dodecenol, and dodecanol. In wind tunnel experiments, addition of dodecanol, the E,Z isomer of codlemone and codlemone acetate augmented male attraction to codlemone at the proportions found in female glands. Larger amounts of the E,Z isomer of codlemone and codlemone acetate had a strong antagonistic effect on male attraction. The identification of pheromone synergists in codling moth is of importance for the development of pheromone‐ based control methods.

Abstract:Two sex pheromone components of the gum leaf skeletonizer, Uraba lugens (Lepidoptera: Nolidae), recently established in New Zealand, were identified. Gas chromatography (GC) electroantennographic detection analyses of female pheromone gland extracts gave three compounds that consistently elicited antennal responses. Chemical analyses, using GC and GC-mass spectrometry, in conjunction with 4-methyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione and dimethyldisulfide derivatizations, identified these compounds as (10E,12Z)-hexadecadien-1-yl acetate (E10,Z12-16:Ac), (10E,12Z)-hexadecadien-1-ol (E10,Z12-16:OH), and (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-yl acetate (Z11-16:Ac). A trapping trial in Queensland, Australia, in 2002, indicated that a blend of the two major components E10,Z12-16:Ac and E10,Z12-16:OH could attract gum leaf skeletonizer males. In the same trial, E10,Z12-16:Ac alone trapped large numbers of an unidentified nolid, Nola spp. Further trials in Auckland, New Zealand established that these two components were sufficient and necessary for trap catch of males; adding minor gland components, (10E,12E)-hexadecadien-1-yl acetate (E10,E12-16:Ac), Z11-16:Ac, or octadecan-1-ol (18:OH), to the two-component lure did not result in increased trap catches. Behavioral observations and gland analyses of the Auckland population revealed that female moths begin calling soon after emergence, with peak calling and pheromone production occurring 7 hr into the scotophase. Analysis of gland extract at two-hourly intervals during the first activity period showed that the ratio of E10,Z12-16:Ac to E10,Z12-16:OH (mean of 86: 14, respectively) and pheromone titer were fairly constant. No qualitative or quantitative differences in pheromone components were detected between gland extracts from Tasmanian univoltine and Auckland bivoltine populations of U. lugens.

Abstract:Abstract The sex pheromone composition of alfalfa plant bugs, Adelphocoris lineolatus (Goeze), from Central Europe was investigated to test the hypothesis that insect species across a wide geographical area can vary in pheromone composition. Potential interactions between the pheromone and a known attractant, ( E )-cinnamaldehyde, were also assessed. Coupled gas chromatography-electroantennography (GC-EAG) using male antennae and volatile extracts collected from females, previously shown to attract males in field experiments, revealed the presence of three physiologically active compounds. These were identified by coupled GC/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and peak enhancement as hexyl butyrate, ( E )-2-hexenyl butyrate and ( E )-4-oxo-2-hexenal. A ternary blend of these compounds in a 5.4:9.0:1.0 ratio attracted male A. lineolatus in field trials in Hungary. Omission of either ( E )-2-hexenyl-butyrate or ( E )-4-oxo-2-hexenal from the ternary blend or substitution of ( E )-4-oxo-2-hexenal by ( E )-2-hexenal resulted in loss of activity. These results indicate that this Central European population is similar in pheromone composition to that previously reported for an East Asian population. Interestingly, another EAG-active compound, 1-hexanol, was also present in female extract. When 1-hexanol was tested in combination with the ternary pheromone blend, male catches were reduced. This compound showed a dose-response effect with small doses showing a strong behavioral effect, suggesting that 1-hexanol may act as a sex pheromone antagonist in A. lineolatus . Furthermore, when ( E )-cinnamaldehyde was field tested in combination with the sex pheromone, there was no increase in male catch, but the combination attracted both males and females. Prospects for practical application are discussed.

Abstract:The tea geometrid, Ectropis grisescens Warren, is one of the most severe defoliator insect pests in tea plantations, China. The use of insecticides, etc., is forbidden on organic tea plantations. No female-produced sex pheromones of E. grisescens had been previously identified. In the present study, female gland extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) and two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) using a time-of-flight mass spectrometric detector (TOFMS). Two components, (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-octadecatriene (Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy) and (Z,Z)-3,9-6,7-epoxyoctadecadiene (Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy), were identified from pheromone gland extracts, and their electrophysiological and behavioral activity evaluated. Under laboratory conditions, Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy elicited a stronger electrophysiological response than Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy. In the field, traps baited with Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy alone showed better results than traps baited with Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy, and the binary mixture of Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy and Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy in a ratio of 4:1 (approximate ratio of females emitting pheromone) caught more males than the single components or any other blends. This study showed that Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy and Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy are the sex pheromone components of E. grisescens and that they prove useful in developing alternative management tools for the pest.

Abstract:PURPOSE OF REVIEW Convergent evidence from a number of neuroscience disciplines supports the hypothesis that Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders progress along brain networks. This review considers the role of neuroimaging in strengthening the case for network-based neurodegeneration and elucidating potential mechanisms. RECENT FINDINGS Advances in functional and structural MRI have recently enabled the delineation of multiple large-scale distributed brain networks. The application of these network-imaging modalities to neurodegenerative disease has shown that specific disorders appear to progress along specific networks. Recent work applying theoretical measures of network efficiency to in-vivo network imaging has allowed for the development and evaluation of models of disease spread along networks. Novel MRI acquisition and analysis methods are paving the way for in-vivo assessment of the layer-specific microcircuits first targeted by neurodegenerative diseases. These methodological advances coupled with large, longitudinal studies of subjects progressing from healthy aging into dementia will enable a detailed understanding of the seeding and spread of these disorders. SUMMARY Neuroimaging has provided ample evidence that neurodegenerative disorders progress along brain networks, and is now beginning to elucidate how they do so.
(Z, Z, Z)-3,6,9-Nonadecadiene, a potential inhibitor of sex pheromone of Grey Tea Geometrid (Lepidoptera: Geometridae): electroantennogram test, wind tunnel, and in silico study

Abstract:Sex pheromone analogs have high structural similarity to sex pheromone components. They also play a role in studying many agricultural pests. In our study, (Z, Z, Z)-3,6,9-nonadecadiene (Z3Z6Z9-19:Hy) was successfully synthesized, which is an analogue to 1 of 2 sex pheromone components of Ectropis grisescens Warren (Z, Z, Z)-3,6,9-octadecatriene (Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy), and it showed potential inhibition in experiments. In the electroantennogram test, Z3Z6Z9-19:Hy showed a dose-dependent response, and only measured half the response of Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy. However, the compound significantly reduced positive response of E. grisescens males by up to 70% in the Y-tube olfactometer. Furthermore, in the wind tunnel, it significantly inhibited all types of behavioral responses. The percentage of moths contacting the pheromone odor source was reduced even at the lowest dose tested. In silico study afterward, molecular docking results showed affinity between Z3Z6Z9-19:Hy and sensory neuron membrane protein 1. Our study revealed the potential of Z3Z6Z9-19:Hy as a sex pheromone inhibitor, which would provide new tools for monitoring and mating disruption of E. grisescens.
Attraction and Electrophysiological Response to Identified Rectal Gland Volatiles in Bactrocera frauenfeldi (Schiner)

Abstract:Bactrocera frauenfeldi (Schiner) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a polyphagous fruit fly pest species that is endemic to Papua New Guinea and has become established in several Pacific Islands and Australia. Despite its economic importance for many crops and the key role of chemical-mediated sexual communication in the reproductive biology of tephritid fruit flies, as well as the potential application of pheromones as attractants, there have been no studies investigating the identity or activity of rectal gland secretions or emission profiles of this species. The present study (1) identifies the chemical profile of volatile compounds produced in rectal glands and released by B. frauenfeldi, (2) investigates which of the volatile compounds elicit an electroantennographic or electropalpographic response, and (3) investigates the potential function of glandular emissions as mate-attracting sex pheromones. Rectal gland extracts and headspace collections from sexually mature males and females of B. frauenfeldi were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Male rectal glands contained (E,E)-2-ethyl-8-methyl-1,7-dioxaspiro [5.5]undecane as a major component and (E,E)-2,8-dimethyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane as a moderate component. Minor components included palmitoleic acid, palmitic acid, and ethyl oleate. In contrast, female rectal glands contained (E,E)-2,8-dimethyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane and ethyl laurate as major components, ethyl myristate and ethyl palmitoleate as moderate components, and 18 minor compounds including amides, esters, and spiroacetals. Although fewer compounds were detected from the headspace collections of both males and females than from the gland extractions, most of the abundant chemicals in the rectal gland extracts were also detected in the headspace collections. Gas chromatography coupled electroantennographic detection found responses to (E,E)-2,8-dimethyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane from the antennae of both male and female B. frauenfeldi. Responses to (E,E)-2-ethyl-8-methyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane were elicited from the antennae of females but not males. The two spiroacetals also elicited electropalpographic responses from both male and female B. frauenfeldi. Ethyl caprate and methyl laurate, found in female rectal glands, elicited responses in female antennae and palps, respectively. Y-maze bioassays showed that females were attracted to the volatiles from male rectal glands but males were not. Neither males nor females were attracted to the volatiles from female rectal glands. Our findings suggest (E,E)-2,8-dimethyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane and (E,E)-2-ethyl-8-methyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane as components of a sex-attracting pheromone in B. frauenfeldi.

Identification of sex attractants for 6 North American click beetle species in 4 tribes of the Elateridae

Abstract:We describe experiments that evaluated potential sex pheromone components for 6 North American click beetle species. In field trials in Illinois, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, male beetles of 6 species were strongly attracted to geranyl butyrate (Agriotes insanus Candèze), 5-methylhexyl (Z)-4-decenoate (Elater abruptus Say), 11-dodecenyl butyrate (Melanotus ignobilis Melsheimer), and limoniic acid (Gambrinus griseus [Palisot de Beauvois], G. rudis [Brown], and G. plebejus [Say]). Collection of E. abruptus in South Carolina represents a new state record. For each species, capture rates varied geographically and temporally, possibly due to differences in local population densities and regional phenology, or the efficiency of different trap designs or trap placement. Structural similarities were observed between the tested attractants and previously identified pheromones of closely related species. For example, males of A. insanus were attracted to geranyl butyrate, analogous to the terpenoid ester pheromones of a number of European congeners. The attractant for E. abruptus, 5-methylhexyl (Z)-4-decenoate, is an analog of the pheromone of its European congener E. ferrugineus L., and the attractant for M. ignobilis, 11-dodecenyl butyrate, is an analog of attractants of European and Asian congeners. Attraction of the 3 Gambrinus species to limoniic acid parallels recent reports of attraction of the congeners G. seminudus (Van Dyke) and G. ursinus (Van Dyke) to this compound, which was originally identified from closely related species of Limonius. Full identifications of additional sex pheromones for elaterid species should provide a more complete picture of the diversities/similarities of the semiochemicals mediating reproductive behaviors of this biologically diverse and taxonomically complex group.

Abstract:The proliferative response of T lymphocytes cultured with autologous non-T lymphocytes is known as the autologous mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR). This reaction can be demonstrated reproducibly in healthy individuals and has been shown to generate specific cytotoxic T cells, as well as T cells that regulate antibody synthesis and cell-mediated immunity. In this study, we demonstrate that the autologous MLR is impaired or absent in most patients with Hodgkin's disease regardless of age, sex, pathologic stage, or histologic classification. In 64 patients, the mean autologous MLR was 3,084+/-1,878 cpm compared to 16,552+/-6,532 in 29 healthy donors. A defect in autologous MLR was observed in newly diagnosed patients before the initiation of therapy, but was also found in patients without evidence of recurrent disease up to 15 yr after treatment. These findings could not be explained by abnormal kinetics or poor viability of stimulator or responder cells. The possibility that suppressor cells are responsible for the reduction of T cell autoreactivity was examined by comparing the autologous MLR of a healthy HLA-identical sibling in the presence and absence of T or non-T cells of an affected sibling. No inhibitory effects were observed. Similarly, substitution of patient plasma for pooled AB serum failed to inhibit the autologous responses of normal donors. Increasing the number of responder T cells in the culture or removing adherent cells from the stimulator population enhanced autoreactivity in some patients, indicating that the defect is not absolute. In two families, T cells of healthy HLA-A, B, and DR-identical siblings of patients responded normally to the non-T cells of their affected siblings, whereas patients' T cells failed to respond both to their own stimulator cells and those of their healthy HLA-identical siblings. These data indicate that the impairment of autologous MLR in some patients is due to a reduction or dysfunction of responder T cell activity and not to a defect of autologous stimulator cells.

Abstract:The goal of this study was to identify and differentiate the influence of multiple habitat types that span a spectrum of suitability for Hyla squirella, a widespread frog species that occurs in a broad range of habitat types. We collected microsatellite data from 675 samples representing 20 localities from the southeastern USA and used machine‐learning methodologies to identify significant habitat features associated with genetic structure. In simulation, we confirm that our machine‐learning algorithm can successfully identify landscape features responsible for generating between‐population genetic differentiation, suggesting that it can be a useful hypothesis‐generating tool for landscape genetics. In our study system, we found that H. squirella were spatially structured and models including specific habitat types (i.e. upland oak forest and urbanization) consistently explained more variation in genetic distance (median pR2 = 47.78) than spatial distance alone (median pR2 = 23.81). Moreover, we estimate the relative importance that spatial distance, upland oak and urbanized habitat have in explaining genetic structure of H. squirella. We discuss how these habitat types may mechanistically facilitate dispersal in H. squirella. This study provides empirical support for the hypothesis that habitat‐use can be an informative correlate of genetic differentiation, even for species that occur in a wide range of habitats.

Abstract:A species of lichen moth, Miltochrista striata (Bremer & Grey, 1852), feeds on lichens in Chinese tea plantations (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze (Ericales:Theaceae)). A previous sex attractant screening test showed that male moths of M. striata were attracted by a mixture of (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-octadecatriene (Z3,Z6,Z9-18:H), (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-nonadecatriene (Z3,Z6,Z9-19:H), and their monoepoxy derivatives. To determine which of the component is an effective sex attractant for M. striata, the sex pheromone glands of female moths were excised and extracted with n-hexane. By comparison with the retention time and mass spectra of synthetic chemicals, two compounds in the crude extracts were identified as Z3,Z6,Z9-18:H and (Z,Z)-3,6-cis-9,10-epoxy-octadecadiene (Z3,Z6,epo9-18:H) using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results of electroantennographic tests showed that the electrophysiological activities of Z3,Z6,Z9-18:H and Z3,Z6,epo9-18:H were distinctly higher than those of (Z,Z)-6,9-cis-3,4-epoxy-octadecadiene, (Z,Z)-3,9-cis-6,7-epoxy-octadecadiene, (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-nonadecatriene, (Z,Z)-6,9-cis-3,4-epoxy-nonadecatriene, (Z,Z)-3,9-cis-6,7-epoxy-nonadecatriene, and (Z,Z)-3,6-cis-9,10-epoxy-nonadecatriene. Field trapping showed that only a mixture of Z3,Z6,Z9-18:H and Z3,Z6,epo9-18:H attracted male moths, and the optimal mixture of these compounds was the ratio of 4:6 at 1.0-mg dosage. The results represent the first determination of the sex pheromone of a lichen moth in a tea plantation and provide a scientific basis to develop an effective protocol using sex pheromone to monitor populations of M. striata.
Rectal gland exudates and emissions of Bactrocera bryoniae: chemical identification, electrophysiological and pheromonal functions

Abstract:Bactrocera bryoniae is a polyphagous and economically significant fruit fly found in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Australia. To understand chemical-mediated sexual communication, and the potential for novel pheromone-based attractants for monitoring and mass-trapping of B. bryoniae, rectal gland exudates and emissions from sexually mature males and females were investigated. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry showed that male rectal glands contained six compounds, of which 1,7-dioxaspiro[5,5]undecane elicited electroantennographic (EAD) and electropalpographic (EPD) responses in both sexes, ethyl 3-acetoxybutanoate elicited EPD responses in both sexes, N-(3-methylbutyl)acetamide elicited EAD response from males and 4-hydroxy-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane elicited EAD responses in males and females and EPD responses in females. Female rectal glands contained 23 compounds with the esters ethyl laurate and ethyl myristate as major components. Amongst the female rectal gland constituents, ethyl laurate, ethyl myristate and ethyl palmitate elicited EAD responses in males and females, N-(3-methylbutyl)acetamide elicited EAD responses in males only, (E,E)-2,8-dimethyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane elicited EAD responses in males and EPD responses in females, and 2,7-dimethyl-1,6-dioxaspiro[4.5]decane, (E,E)-2-ethyl-7-methyl-1,6-dioxaspiro[4.5]decane, (E,E)-2-ethyl-8-methyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane, (Z,Z)-2,8-dimethyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane, (E,E)-2-propyl-8-methyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane and ethyl caprate elicited EPD responses in females only. Y-tube bioassays indicated that male rectal gland extracts and headspace volatiles attracted females and males, while female rectal gland extracts and headspace volatiles only attracted males. The results suggest that ethyl 3-acetoxybutanoate, 1,7-dioxaspiro[5,5]undecane and 4-hydroxy-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane may be components of male-produced sex pheromone in B. bryoniae while (E,E)-2,8-dimethyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane, N-(3-methylbutyl)acetamide, ethyl laurate, ethyl myristate and ethyl palmitate may be components of female-produced sex pheromone. Ethyl 3-acetoxybutanoate, N-(3-methylbutyl) acetamide, 1,7-dioxaspiro[5,5]undecane and 4-hydroxy-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane may be components of male aggregation pheromone. These findings contribute to the understanding of pheromone communication in B. bryoniae and provide a foundation for developing pheromone-based monitoring and control methods.

Abstract:Analysis of ovipositor extracts of the box tree pyralid, Glyphodes perspectalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), by coupled gas chromatography-electroantennogram detection and gas chromatography yielded three candidate pheromone compounds. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and reaction with dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), identified these compounds as (Z)-11-hexadecenal (Z11-16:Ald), (E)-11-hexadecenal (E11-16:Ald), and (Z)-11-hexadecenol (Z11-16:OH). The ratio of these three compounds in crude extract was 5:1.25:1, and the total amount was approximately 100 ng/female. In laboratory bioassays, Z11-16:Ald alone was attractive to males. In field bioassays, however, Z11-16:Ald alone was not attractive to males, but a mixture of Z11-16:Ald and E11-16:Ald was. The addition of Z11-16:OH to the two aldehydes, significantly reduced attractiveness to male moths in a field trial. From these results, we conclude that the aldehyde compounds comprise the sex pheromone components of G. perspectalis. A rubber septum containing 0.6 mg of the two aldehydes at the natural ratio was an effective lure for monitoring this pest.

Abstract:The scarab genus Osmoderma (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) includes several large species called hermit beetles that develop within dead and decaying hardwood trees. Males of at least three Palearctic species produce the aggregation-sex pheromone ( R )-(+)-γ-decalactone, including the endangered O. eremita (Scopoli). However, hermit beetles have received less attention in the western hemisphere, resulting in a large gap in our knowledge of the chemical ecology of Nearctic species. Here, we identify ( R )-( +)-γ-decalactone as the primary component of the aggregation-sex pheromone of the North American species Osmoderma eremicola (Knoch). Field trials at sites in Wisconsin and Illinois revealed that both sexes were attracted to lures containing ( R )-(+)-γ-decalactone or the racemate, but only males of O. eremicola produced the pheromone in laboratory bioassays, alongside an occasional trace of the chain-length analog γ-dodecalactone. Females of the congener O. scabra (Palisot de Beauvois) were also significantly attracted by γ-decalactone, suggesting further conservation of the pheromone, as were females of the click beetle Elater abruptus Say (Coleoptera: Elateridae), suggesting that this compound may have widespread kairomonal activity. Further research is needed to explore the behavioral roles of both lactones in mediating behavioral and ecological interactions among these beetle species.

Abstract:Glyphodes pyloalis Walker, an important pest of mulberries, produce a sex pheromonewhich attracts male moths.1} We report here the purification and identification of the sex pheromone of this species. A bioassay method based on orientation to the pheromone source and copulatory attempts of the male moths was used to monitor the isolation steps.1} Abdominal tips of about 10,000 virgin female moths were extracted with methylene chloride. Preliminary experiments on catalytic hydrogenation, reduction with LiAlH4, saponification and acetylation of the crude extract revealed the sex pheromone to be an acetate of an unsaturated alcohol. After purification by a Florisil column, the sex pheromone was analyzed by a gas-liquid chromatography (GC) with an effluent splitter and a flame ionization detector. On an OV-101 column (programmed temperature from 150 to 300°C at 4°C/min), a material with the pheromoneactivity was recovered from 18.0min to 20.0min and this recovery was located between the retention times of (7Z, 1 lZ)-7, 1 1-hexadecadienyl acetate (17.6min) and (2E913Z)-2,13-octadecadienyl acetate (22.4min).
