Abstract:In order to know thoroughly about the sex pheromone communication system of the black cutworm,the behavioral response of the male black cutworm moth to synthetic sex pheromone single component Z7-12:Ac(A),Z9-14:Ac(B),Z11-16:Ac(C),Z5-10:Ac(D),Z8-12:Ac(E),different blends and dosages were studied in a wind-tunnel.The results indicated that all single component could only elicit the males,but could not cause them fly to the sex pheromone source.When the lures were baited with the duality compound AB,it could elicit 15.71% of males behave copulatory behavior.At the same dosage,the attracting ability of ternary compound ABC is the biggest,it could elicit 40.58% of males search the sex pheromone source,and 26.15% of males behave copulatory behavior.We use different dosages of ternary compound ABC at its best ratio(3:1:1) to conduct wind-tunnel test and found that males showed the biggest responses to sex pheromone at 100 μg dosages,and 29.87% of males behaved copulatory behavior.The attracting ability of 50 μg dosage was the second,there was not significant difference between them(P≥0.05).
Analysis of Tea Geometrid (Ectropis grisescens) Pheromone Gland Extracts Using GC-EAD and GC×GC/TOFMS

Abstract:The tea geometrid, Ectropis grisescens Warren, is one of the most severe defoliator insect pests in tea plantations, China. The use of insecticides, etc., is forbidden on organic tea plantations. No female-produced sex pheromones of E. grisescens had been previously identified. In the present study, female gland extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) and two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) using a time-of-flight mass spectrometric detector (TOFMS). Two components, (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-octadecatriene (Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy) and (Z,Z)-3,9-6,7-epoxyoctadecadiene (Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy), were identified from pheromone gland extracts, and their electrophysiological and behavioral activity evaluated. Under laboratory conditions, Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy elicited a stronger electrophysiological response than Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy. In the field, traps baited with Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy alone showed better results than traps baited with Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy, and the binary mixture of Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy and Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy in a ratio of 4:1 (approximate ratio of females emitting pheromone) caught more males than the single components or any other blends. This study showed that Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy and Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy are the sex pheromone components of E. grisescens and that they prove useful in developing alternative management tools for the pest.

Abstract:The geometrid, Ectropis grisescens Warren, is one of the most serious defoliators of the green tea, Camellia sinensis. In the present study, adult emergence, calling behavior, mating activities, and oviposition patterns were observed and the effect of female sex pheromone was evaluated under laboratory conditions (25 ± 1 °C, 14:10 light/dark and 70–75% RH). Adult emergence and calling behavior occurred only at the scotophase. The peak emergence occurred 2 h into the scotophase for males and 3 h for females. Female calling behavior occurred during 1–4 days after eclosion, with most callings among the 1-day-old and the calling gradually decreasing by the age. Mating behavior was first observed at the 2 h into the scotophase. While the mating peak time was similar, 6–8 h into the scotophase for single-pair and multiple-pair groups, the peak of oviposition was 3 days after mating. The pheromone gland extracts from the abdominal tips of 1–2 days virgin female moths were more attractive than the virgin females or the control in the wind tunnel tests. Our findings provide scientific basis to ecological control of E. grisescens.

Abstract:Responses of three Trichogramma species,Trichogrammajaponicun,T.chilonis and T.dendrolimi,in rice ecosystem to synthetic sex pheromone of two main Lepidoptera pests,stripped stem borer Chilo suppressalis (Walker) and rice leaf folder Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée) were determined using the Y-tube olfactometer.The concentrations of sex pheromone were 0.01,0.1,1,10,100 and 1000 μg.The results showed that the sex pheromone lure of C.suppressalis significantly attracted T.japonicun females,but not significantly attracted T.chilonis females and T.dendrolimi females.The sex pheromone lure of C.suppressalis significantly attracted T.japonicum females,T.chilonis females and T.dendrolimi females only under certain concentration.Those results indicate that the tested Trichogramma species can use host sex pheromone as a cue to search hosts,which may promote Trichogramma species' migration from non-rice habit to rice ecosystem and improve biological control of lepidopteran pests.
(Z, Z, Z)-3,6,9-Nonadecadiene, a potential inhibitor of sex pheromone of Grey Tea Geometrid (Lepidoptera: Geometridae): electroantennogram test, wind tunnel, and in silico study

Abstract:Sex pheromone analogs have high structural similarity to sex pheromone components. They also play a role in studying many agricultural pests. In our study, (Z, Z, Z)-3,6,9-nonadecadiene (Z3Z6Z9-19:Hy) was successfully synthesized, which is an analogue to 1 of 2 sex pheromone components of Ectropis grisescens Warren (Z, Z, Z)-3,6,9-octadecatriene (Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy), and it showed potential inhibition in experiments. In the electroantennogram test, Z3Z6Z9-19:Hy showed a dose-dependent response, and only measured half the response of Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy. However, the compound significantly reduced positive response of E. grisescens males by up to 70% in the Y-tube olfactometer. Furthermore, in the wind tunnel, it significantly inhibited all types of behavioral responses. The percentage of moths contacting the pheromone odor source was reduced even at the lowest dose tested. In silico study afterward, molecular docking results showed affinity between Z3Z6Z9-19:Hy and sensory neuron membrane protein 1. Our study revealed the potential of Z3Z6Z9-19:Hy as a sex pheromone inhibitor, which would provide new tools for monitoring and mating disruption of E. grisescens.

Abstract:UNLABELLED This work studies the effects of the initial brine concentrations of NaCl, KCl, and CaCl(2) on the mineral content and gustatory and kinaesthetic sensations of fermented green table olives, using a simplex centroid mixture design augmented with interior points. The sodium in the flesh was linearly related to the mixture concentrations while potassium and calcium were linked by quadratic and special cubic models respectively. Acidity, saltiness, hardness, fibrousness, and crunchiness were expressed as linear funtions of the NaCl, KCl, and CaCl(2) initial brine contents but bitterness required quadratic equations. The models can be used to produce table olives with specific mineral contents in the flesh and to predict their corresponding sensory characteristics. PRACTICAL APPLICATION The study provides the industry with models to estimate the Na, K, and Ca mineral contents in the flesh of fermented Gordal green table olives as well as their sensory characteristics as a function of the NaCl, KCl, and CaCl(2) initial compositions in the brining solution. Therefore, the paper provides tools which are able to support the production of commercial presentations which not only satisfy consumer demand for low Na, but are also K and Ca fortified table olive presentations with specific sensory profiles.
N-Pentacosane Acts As Both Contact and Volatile Pheromone in the Tea Weevil, Myllocerinus Aurolineatus

Abstract:Insect cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) play important roles in chemical communication, as well as having ecological and physiological roles. The use of CHCs for mate recognition has been shown in many insect genera, but little is known about their use in the tea weevil Myllocerinus aurolineatus. Here, we provide evidence that CHCs on the surface of sexually mature M. aurolineatus females act as contact sex pheromones, facilitating mate recognition and eliciting copulatory behavior in male weevils. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, we identify n-pentacosane and n-heptacosane as two potential contact pheromone components. Results from arena bioassays showed that n-pentacosane is a component of a contact pheromone of M. aurolineatus. Further results from the Y-tube olfactometer bioassays showed that n-pentacosane also acts as a volatile attractant. Our results greatly improve our understanding of the chemical ecology of M. aurolineatus.

Abstract:Male moths can finely discriminate the sex pheromone emitted by conspecific females from similar compounds. Pheromone receptors, expressed on the dendritic membrane of sensory neurons housed in the long trichoid sensilla of antennae, are thought to be associated with the pheromone reception. In this study, we identified and functionally characterized 4 pheromone receptors from the antennae of Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). A tissue distribution analysis showed that the expression of the 4 SlituPRs was restricted to antennae. In addition, SlituOR6 and SlituOR13 were specifically expressed in male antennae whereas SlituOR11 and SlituOR16 were male-biased. Functional investigation by heterologous expression in Xenopus oocytes revealed that SlituOR6 was specifically tuned to the second major pheromone component, Z9,E12-14:OAc, SlituOR13 was equally tuned to Z9,E12-14:OAc and Z9-14:OAc, with a small response to the major pheromone component Z9,E11-14:OAc, SlituOR16 significantly responded to the behavioral antagonist Z9-14:OH, whereas SlituOR11 did not show response to any of the pheromone compounds tested in this study. Our results provide molecular data to better understand the mechanisms of sex pheromone detection in the moth S. litura and bring clues to investigate the evolution of the sexual communication channel in closely related species through comparison with previously reported pheromone receptors in other Spodoptera species.
Physicochemical Basis and Comparison of Two Type II Sex Pheromone Components Binding with Pheromone-Binding Protein 2 from Tea Geometrid, Ectropis obliqua

Abstract:Lepidopteran geometrid moth can produce complex Type II sex pheromone components to attract males and trigger mating behavior. Although several sex pheromone components have been identified, it remains unclear whether their physicochemical roles in sex pheromone sensing are the same. Therefore, we utilized tea geometrid ( Ectropis obliqua) as an example model to investigate and compare the physicochemical basis of two key Type II sex pheromone components, cis-6,7-epoxy-(3Z,9Z)-3,9-octadecadiene ( Z3 Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy) and ( Z, Z, Z)-3,6,9-octadecatriene (Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy), interacting with pheromone-binding protein 2 ( EoblPBP2) from E. obliqua. Multispectral, thermodynamic, docking, and site-directed mutagenesis indicated that the major sex pheromone component Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy is more susceptible to pH-tuned than the minor component Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy, whereas Z3Z6Z9-18:Hy seems to be more susceptible to temperature and amino acid mutations than Z3Z9-6,7-epo-18:Hy. Our study suggests that different components of Type II sex pheromone play different binding characters under specific conditions in the physicochemical behavior. This deeply supplements the theoretical knowledge of Type II pheromones involved in the recognition and discrimination in the Lepidopteran sex pheromones family.

Abstract:Ectropis grisescens and Ectropis obliqua (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) are sibling pest species that co-occur on tea plants. The sex pheromone components of both species contain (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-octadecatriene and (Z,Z)-3,9-cis-6,7-epoxy-octadecadiene. E. obliqua has (Z,Z)-3,9-cis-6,7-epoxy-nonadecadiene as an additional sex pheromone component, which ensures reproductive segregation between the two species. To ascertain the detection mechanism of olfactory organs for sex pheromone components of E. grisescens and E. obliqua, we applied scanning electron microscopy and single sensillum recording to compare antennal morphology and sensillum physiology in the two species. There was no apparent morphological difference between the antennae of the two species. Both species responded similarly to all three sex pheromone components, including, E. obliqua specific component. The distribution patterns of antennal sensilla trichodea differed between the two species. Sex pheromone olfactory sensing in these sibling species appears to be determined by the density of different types of olfactory sensing neurons. Dose-dependent responses of sensilla trichodea type 1 to (Z,Z)-3,9-cis-6,7-epoxy-octadecadiene, the most abundant component, showed an "all or none" pattern and the other two components showed sigmoidal dose-response curves with a half threshold of 10-4 (dilution equal to the concentration of 10 μg/μl). These results suggest that the major sex pheromone component functions as an on-off controller while secondary components function as modulators during olfactory transmission to the primary olfactory center.
Molecular Mechanism of Sex Pheromone Perception in Male Mythimna Loreyi Revealed by in Vitro System

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Mythimna loreyi is an important agricultural pest with a sensitive sex pheromone communication system. To clarify the pheromone binding proteins (PBPs) and pheromone receptors (PRs) involved in sex pheromone perception is important for both understanding the molecular olfactory mechanism and developing a new pest control strategy in M. loreyi.RESULTS: First, the electroantennogram (EAG) assay showed that male M. loreyi displayed the highest response to the major sex pheromone component Z9-14:Ac, and higher responses to two minor components, Z7-12:Ac and Z11-16:Ac. Second, the fluorescence competition binding assay showed that PBP1 bound all three pheromones and other tested compounds with high or moderate affinity, while PBP2 and PBP3 each bound only one pheromone component and few other compounds. Third, functional study using the Xenopus oocyte system demonstrated that, of the six candidate PRs, PR2 was weakly sensitive to the major pheromone Z9-14:Ac, but was strongly sensitive to pheromone analog Z9-14:OH; PR3 was strongly and specifically sensitive to a minor component Z7-12:Ac; PR4 and OR33 were both weakly sensitive to another minor component, Z11-16:Ac. Finally, phylogenetic relationship and ligand profiles of PRs were compared among six species from two closely related genera Mythimna and Spodoptera, suggesting functional shifts of M. loreyi PRs toward Spodoptera PRs.CONCLUSION: Functional differentiations were revealed among three PBPs and six PRs in sex pheromone perception, laying an important basis for understanding the molecular mechanism of sex pheromone perception and for developing new control strategies in M. loreyi. Abstract:Insects rely heavily on their sophisticated chemosensory systems to locate host plants and find conspecific mates. Although the molecular mechanisms of odorant recognition in many Lepidoptera species have been well explored, limited information has been reported on the geometrid moth Ectropis obliqua Prout, an economically important pest of tea plants. In the current study, we first attempted to identify and characterize the putative olfactory carrier proteins, including odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) and chemosensory proteins (CSPs). By analyzing previously obtained transcriptomic data of third-instar larvae, five OBPs and 14 CSPs in E. obliqua were identified. Sequence alignment, conserved motif identification, and phylogenetic analysis suggested that candidate proteins have typical characteristics of the insect OBP or CSP family. The expression patterns regarding life stages and different tissues were determined by quantitative real-time PCR. The results revealed that four transcripts (OBP2, OBP4 and CSP8, CSP10) had larvae preferential expression profiles and nine candidate genes (PBP1, OBP1 and CSP2, CSP4, CSP5, CSP6, CSP7, CSP11, and CSP13) were adult-biased expressed. Further specific tissue expression profile evaluation showed that OBP1, OBP2, OBP4, and PBP1 were highly expressed at olfactory organs, implying their potential involvement in chemical cue detection, whereas CSPs were ubiquitously detected among all of the tested tissues and could be associated with multiple physiological functions. This study provided a foundation for understanding the physiological functions of OBPs and CSPs in E. obliqua and will help pave the way for the development of a new environmental friendly pest management strategy against the tea geometrid moth.

Gene Identification of Pheromone Gland Genes Involved in Type II Sex Pheromone Biosynthesis and Transportation in Female Tea Pest Ectropis grisescens

Abstract:Moths can biosynthesize sex pheromones in the female sex pheromone glands (PGs) and can distinguish species-specific sex pheromones using their antennae. However, the biosynthesis and transportation mechanism for Type II sex pheromone components has rarely been documented in moths. In this study, we constructed a massive PG transcriptome database (14.72 Gb) from a moth species, Ectropis grisescens, which uses type II sex pheromones and is a major tea pest in China. We further identified putative sex pheromone biosynthesis and transportation-related unigenes: 111 cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYPs), 25 odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), and 20 chemosensory proteins (CSPs). Tissue expression and phylogenetic tree analyses showed that one CYP (EgriCYP341-fragment3), one OBP (EgriOBP4), and one CSP (EgriCSP10) gene displayed an enriched expression in the PGs, and that EgriOBP2, 3, and 25 are clustered in the moth pheromone-binding protein clade. We considered these our candidate genes. Our results yielded large-scale PG sequence information for further functional studies.
Identification of Sex Pheromone of Miltochrista striata (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae)

Abstract:A species of lichen moth, Miltochrista striata (Bremer & Grey, 1852), feeds on lichens in Chinese tea plantations (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze (Ericales:Theaceae)). A previous sex attractant screening test showed that male moths of M. striata were attracted by a mixture of (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-octadecatriene (Z3,Z6,Z9-18:H), (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-nonadecatriene (Z3,Z6,Z9-19:H), and their monoepoxy derivatives. To determine which of the component is an effective sex attractant for M. striata, the sex pheromone glands of female moths were excised and extracted with n-hexane. By comparison with the retention time and mass spectra of synthetic chemicals, two compounds in the crude extracts were identified as Z3,Z6,Z9-18:H and (Z,Z)-3,6-cis-9,10-epoxy-octadecadiene (Z3,Z6,epo9-18:H) using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results of electroantennographic tests showed that the electrophysiological activities of Z3,Z6,Z9-18:H and Z3,Z6,epo9-18:H were distinctly higher than those of (Z,Z)-6,9-cis-3,4-epoxy-octadecadiene, (Z,Z)-3,9-cis-6,7-epoxy-octadecadiene, (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-nonadecatriene, (Z,Z)-6,9-cis-3,4-epoxy-nonadecatriene, (Z,Z)-3,9-cis-6,7-epoxy-nonadecatriene, and (Z,Z)-3,6-cis-9,10-epoxy-nonadecatriene. Field trapping showed that only a mixture of Z3,Z6,Z9-18:H and Z3,Z6,epo9-18:H attracted male moths, and the optimal mixture of these compounds was the ratio of 4:6 at 1.0-mg dosage. The results represent the first determination of the sex pheromone of a lichen moth in a tea plantation and provide a scientific basis to develop an effective protocol using sex pheromone to monitor populations of M. striata.

Abstract:Background Sex pheromone has proven to be a viable tool for monitoring and controlling pests and has been an important part of integrated pest management (IPM). The noctuid moth Macdunnoughia crassisigna Warren poses a significant threat as a defoliator pest, impacting soybean and cruciferous vegetable production and quality in East Asia. However, the lack of comprehensive knowledge about its sexual chemical signaling hampers the development of semiochemical‐based IPM approaches for M. crassisigna. Results We first determined the mating rhythms of M. crassisigna. We then collected pheromones from the sex glands of virgin females at the mating peak and analyzed their components using gas chromatography‐electroantennogram detection (GC‐EAD) analysis. The results showed that three components elicited significant electrophysiological responses in male antennae. Gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) analysis characterized these components as (Z)‐7‐dodecene acetate (Z7‐12: OAc), (Z)‐9‐tetradecene acetate (Z9‐14: OAc), and (Z)‐11‐hexadecen‐1‐ol (Z11‐16: OH). Further field experiments indicated that the mixture of Z7‐12: OAc and Z9‐14: OAc at a ratio of 3:1 displayed significant attractivity to males, confirming its role as a putative sex pheromone of M. crassisigna. Long‐term monitoring tests showed that traps baited with these pheromone lures effectively mirrored the population dynamics of M. crassisigna. Conclusion This study successfully identified and validated the sex pheromone released by female M. crassisigna and formulated potent sex lures for field‐based pest monitoring. These findings enriched our understanding of chemical communication in Noctuidae and laid a foundation for developing practical monitoring and control methods against M. crassisigna. Electrophysiological and Behavioral Responses of Dasychira baibarana (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) to Tea Plant Volatiles

Abstract:Abstract Tea black tussock moth, Dasychira baibarana (Matsumura) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), is a devastating pest species of the tea plant in China. Here, we evaluated the responses of D. baibarana to tea plant volatiles using gas chromatography coupled electroantennographic detection (GC–EAD), eleclectroantennography (EAG), and a Y-tube olfactometer. In total, 11 of 18 analyzed compounds elicited GC–EAD responses from test insects. GC–EAD bio-active compounds were further investigated using EAG and behavioral responses. In the EAG analysis, male moths had significantly greater responses to four compounds [(Z)-3-hexenyl butyrate, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, ocimene and benzyl alcohol] than female moths. For females, maximum EAG amplitudes, were recorded in response to linalool, (Z)-3-hexenyl hexanoate and (Z)-jasmone. In EAG and behavioral bio-assays, the responses of both sexes were dose independent. In behavioral bio-assays male moths responding significantly to (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, ocimene, (Z)-3-hexenyl butyrate, linalool, benzyl alcohol, and (Z)-jasmone at various concentrations. For females, significant behavioral responses were observed to (Z)-3-hexenyl hexanoate, followed by (Z)-jasmone, linalool, ocimene, and benzyl alcohol. However, neither sex was sensitive to 4 of the 11 tested compounds, phenyethyl alcohol, phenylacetonitrile, (E)-nerolidol, and indole. The present results showed that tea plant volatiles influenced the behavior of D. baibarana moths, which will greatly contribute in developing eco-friendly control strategies for D. baibarana, through the application of a blend of compounds that showed significant EAG and behavioral responses or a blend combined with female-produced sex pheromones.

Abstract:The moth Eogystia hippophaecolus (Hua et al.) is a major threat to sea buckthorn plantations in China. Specific and highly efficient artificial sex pheromone traps have been developed and used to control this pest species. However, the biosynthesis of sex pheromones Z7-14: Ac and E3-14:Ac remains poorly understood. We investigated the female pheromone gland transcriptome of E. hippophaecolus and identified two pheromone biosynthesis-activating neuropeptides (PBANs), two pheromone biosynthesis-activating neuropeptide receptors (PBANrs), five acetyl-CoA carboxylases (ACCs), six fatty acid synthases (FASs), 16 Acyl-CoA desaturases (DESs), 26 reductases (REDs), 13 acetyltransferases (ACTs), one fatty acid transport protein (FATP), one acyl-CoA-binding protein (ACBP), and five elongation of very long-chain fatty acid proteins (ELOs) in pheromone biosynthesis pathways. Additionally, we identified 11 odorant-degrading enzymes (ODEs) and 16 odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), 14 chemosensory proteins (CSPs), two sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs), three odorant receptors (ORs), seven ionotropic receptors (IRs), and six gustatory receptors (GRs). 77 unigenes involved in female pheromone biosynthesis, 31 chemoreception proteins and 11 odorant degradation enzymes were identified, which provided insight into the regulation of the pheromone components and pheromone recognition in the sex pheromone gland, and knowledge pertinent to new integrated pest management strategy of interference pheromone biosynthesis and recognition.
Chemosensory Gene Families in Ectropis grisescens and Candidates for Detection of Type-II Sex Pheromones

Abstract:Tea grey geometrid (Ectropis grisescens), a devastating chewing pest in tea plantations throughout China, produces Type-II pheromone components. Little is known about the genes encoding proteins involved in the perception of Type-II sex pheromone components. To investigate the olfaction genes involved in E. grisescens sex pheromones and plant volatiles perception, we sequenced female and male antennae transcriptomes of E. grisescens. After assembly and annotation, we identified 153 candidate chemoreception genes in E. grisescens, including 40 odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), 30 chemosensory proteins (CSPs), 59 odorant receptors (ORs), and 24 ionotropic receptors (IRs). The results of phylogenetic, qPCR, and mRNA abundance analyses suggested that three candidate pheromone-binding proteins (EgriOBP2, 3, and 25), two candidate general odorant-binding proteins (EgriOBP1 and 29), six pheromone receptors (EgriOR24, 25, 28, 31, 37, and 44), and EgriCSP8 may be involved in the detection of Type-II sex pheromone components. Functional investigation by heterologous expression in Xenopus oocytes revealed that EgriOR31 was robustly tuned to the E. grisescens sex pheromone component (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-octadecatriene and weakly to the other sex pheromone component (Z,Z)-3,9-6,7-epoxyoctadecadiene. Our results represent a systematic functional analysis of the molecular mechanism of olfaction perception in E. grisescens with an emphasis on gene encoding proteins involved in perception of Type-II sex pheromones, and provide information that will be relevant to other Lepidoptera species.

Abstract:A visual speech training aid for persons with hearing impairments has been developed using a Windows-based multimedia computer. Previous papers (Zahorian, S. et al., Int. Conf. on Spoken Language Processing, 2002; Zahorian and Nossair, Z.B., IEEE Trans. on Speech and Audio Processing, vol.7, no.4, p.414-25, 1999; Zimmer, A. et al., ICASSP, vol.6, p.3625-8, 1998; Zahorian and Jagharghi, A., J. Acoust. Soc. Amer., vol.94, no.4, p.1966-82, 1993) have describe the signal processing steps and display options for giving real-time feedback about the quality of pronunciation for 10 steady-state American English monopthong vowels (/aa/, /iy/, /uw/, /ae/, /er/, /ih/, /eh/, /ao/, /ah/, and /uh/). This vowel training aid is thus referred to as a vowel articulation training aid (VATA). We now describe methods to develop a monophone-based hidden Markov model/neural network recognizer such that real time visual feedback can be given about the quality of pronunciation of short words and phrases. Experimental results are reported which indicate a high degree of accuracy for labeling and segmenting the CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) database developed for "training" the display.
