Abstract:We prove the existence of weak solutions of a two-incompressible immiscible wetting and non-wetting fluids phase flow model in porous media with dynamic capillary pressure. This model is a coupled system which includes a nonlinear parabolic saturation equation and an elliptic pressure–velocity equation. In the regularized case, the existence and uniqueness of the weak solution are obtained. We let the regularization parameter be η→0 to prove the existence of weak solutions.

Abstract:We investigate a new diffuse-interface model that describes creeping two-phase flows (i.e., flows exhibiting a low Reynolds number), especially flows that permeate a porous medium. The system of equations consists of a Brinkman equation for the volume averaged velocity field as well as a convective Cahn--Hilliard equation with dynamic boundary conditions for the phase-field, which describes the location of the two fluids within the domain. The dynamic boundary conditions are incorporated to model the interaction of the fluids with the wall of the container more precisely. In particular, they allow for a dynamic evolution of the contact angle between the interface separating the fluids and the boundary, and also for a convection-induced motion of the corresponding contact line. For our model, we first prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions in the case where regular potentials are used in the Cahn--Hilliard subsystem. In this case, we can further show the uniqueness of the weak solution under suitable additional assumptions. Moreover, we further prove the existence of weak solutions in the case of singular potentials. Therefore, we regularize such singular potentials by a Yosida approximation, such that the results for regular potentials can be applied, and eventually pass to the limit in this approximation scheme.

Abstract:We prove the existence of a weak solution to the compressible Navier–Stokes system with singular pressure that explodes when density achieves its congestion level. This is a quantity whose initial value evolves according to the transport equation. We then prove that the "stiff pressure" limit gives rise to the two-phase compressible/incompressible system with congestion constraint describing the free interface. We prescribe the velocity at the boundary and the value of density at the inflow part of the boundary of a general bounded domain. For the positive velocity flux, there are no restrictions on the size of the boundary conditions, while for the zero flux, a certain smallness is required for the last limit passage.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider modeling and numerical simulation of incompressible and immiscible two‐phase flow in porous media with rock compressibility. Using the second law of thermodynamics, we rigorously derive a thermodynamically consistent mathematical model, which characterizes the two‐phase capillarity and rock compressibility through free energies, thereby following an energy dissipation law. We also derive a general and thermodynamically consistent formulation for the effective pore fluid pressure acting on rocks, which is a fundamental problem for two‐phase flow with rock compressibility. To solve the model effectively, we propose an energy stable numerical method, which can preserve multiple physical properties, including the energy dissipation law, full conservation law for both fluids and pore volumes, and positivity of porosity and saturations. Benefiting from the newly‐developed energy factorization approach and careful treatments for the effective pressure and porosity, the proposed scheme can inherit the energy dissipation law at the discrete level. The fully discrete scheme is constructed using a locally conservative cell‐centered finite difference method. The implicit strategy is applied to treat the upwind phase mobilities and porosity in the phase mass conservation equations and the porosity equation so as to conserve the mass of each phase as well as pore volumes. The positivity of porosity and saturations is proved without any restrictions on time step and mesh sizes. An efficient sequential iterative method is also developed to solve the nonlinear system resulting from the scheme. Finally, numerical results are given to verify the features of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper develops a semi-analytical solution for the transient response of an unsaturated single-layer poroviscoelastic medium with two immiscible fluids by using the Laplace transformation and the state-space method. Using the elastic–viscoelastic correspondence principle, we first introduce the Kelvin–Voigt model into Zienkiewicz’s unsaturated poroelastic model. The vibrational response for unsaturated porous material can be obtained by combining these two models and assuming that the wetting and non-wetting fluids are compressible, the solid skeleton and solid particles are viscoelastic, and the inertial and mechanical couplings are taken into account. The Laplace transformation and state-space method are used to solve the basic equations with the associated initial and boundary conditions, and the analytical solution in the Laplace domain is developed. To evaluate the responses in the time domain, Durbin’s numerical inverse Laplace transform method is used to obtain the semi-analytical solution. There are three compressional waves in porous media with two immiscible fluids. Moreover, to observe the three compressional waves clearly, we assume the two immiscible fluids are water and oil. Finally, several examples are provided to show the validity of the semi-analytical solution and to assess the influences of the viscosity coefficients and dynamic permeability coefficients on the behavior of the three compressional waves.

Abstract:Based on the mechanics of fluids in porous media and the continuum mechanics,a continuum theory of multiphase porous media is developed to analyze the propagation of elastic waves in a porous medium saturated by a mixture of two immiscible,viscousc,ompressible fluids.The behavior of porous media can be described by three equations of motion,two continuity equations of flow,and a supplementary equation that describes the constitutive relationships.A closed-form solution is derived for a fully coupled model considering the capillary pressure and irreducible/residual saturation,which demonstrates the existence of three types of compressional waves and one type of shear wave.The theoretical results are plotted and compared with the experimental data available in the previous studies.This solution is highly versatile in that it considers compression of the solid grain,compression of both pore fluids,deformation of the porous skeleton,and spatial damping.In addition,all the material parameters in this model are measurable.

Abstract:This paper introduces the theory of mixture, a suitable method for treating multi-phase porous media with non-uniform mesostructures. In the frame of this theory, by means of the extent of compressibility of pore fluid, a new possible method is proposed to describe the non-saturated properties of porous media by using a solid-fluid model instead of the traditional solid-fluid-gas model. By adopting this method, under the condition of small deformation, elastic-plastic constitutive equation of solid-fluid porous media established. Elasto-plastic finite element analysis based on the proposed constitutive equation and the Yu unified strength is also performed to study the influence of compressibility of pore fluid on the elastic limit load and load-deformation relation of an example structure.

Abstract:In this work, we study the so-called Allen-Cahn-Navier-Stokes equations, a diffuse-interface model for two-phase incompressible flows with different densities. We first prove the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions with finite initial energy over the smooth bounded domain $\Omega$. The key point is to transform the boundary values of the higher order spatial derivatives to that of the higher order time derivatives by employing the well-known Agmon-Douglis-Nireberg theory in [6]. We then prove global existence near the equilibrium $(0, \pm 1)$ and justify the time exponetial decay $e^{- c_\# t}$ of the global solution. The majority is that the derivative $f'(\phi)$ of the physical relevant energy density $f(\phi)$ will generate an additional damping effect under the perturbation $\phi = \varphi \pm 1$.

Abstract:In this article, we study two-phase fluid flow in coupled free flow and porous media regions. The model consists of coupled Cahn–Hilliard and Navier–Stokes equations in the free fluid region and the two-phase Darcy law in the porous medium region. We propose a Robin–Robin domain decomposition method for the coupled Navier–Stokes and Darcy system with the generalized Beavers–Joseph–Saffman condition on the interface between the free flow and the porous media regions. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the large time behavior of the solutions to the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes/Allen-Cahn system with the immiscible two-phase flow initially located near the phase separation state. Under the assumptions that the initial data is a small perturbation of the constant state, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of the solutions and establish the time decay rates of the solution as well as its higher-order spatial derivatives. Moreover, we derive that the solutions of the system are time asymptotically approximated by the solutions of the modified parabolic system and obtain decay rates in $L^2$ and $L^1$. Furthermore, we show that the solution of the system is time asymptotically approximated in $L^p (1 \leq p \leq+\infty)$ by the diffusion waves.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the appeared complexity of two-phase flow (air-water) in a heterogeneous soil where the supposed porous media is non-deformable media which is under the time-dependent gas pressure. After obtaining of governing equations and considering the capillary pressure-saturation and permeability functions, the evolution of the models unknown parameters were obtained. In this way, using COMSOL (FEMLAB) and fluid flow-script Module, the role of heterogeneity in intrinsic permeability was analysed. Also, the evolution of relative permeability of wetting and non-wetting fluid, capillary pressure and other parameters were elicited.

Abstract:In this paper, a single component, two-phase flow simulator is developed to investigate the behavior of isothermal two-phase fluid flow in porous media. The simulator is based on the lattice-Boltzmann method and the Shan-Chen multiphase model of nonideal fluids that allow coexistence of two phases of a single substance. We reproduce some different idealized situations in which the results are already known from theory or laboratory measurements and show the validity of the implementation for the physical two-phase flow in porous media. Application of the method to fluid intrusion in porous media is discussed and shows the effect of wettability on the fluid flow. The capability of reproducing critical flooding phenomena under strong wettability conditions is also proved.

Abstract:We show existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to a Navier-Stokes/Cahn-Hilliard type system on a given two-dimensional evolving surface in the case of different densities and a singular (logarithmic) potential. The system describes a diffuse interface model for a two-phase flow of viscous incompressible fluids on an evolving surface. We also establish the validity of the instantaneous strict separation property from the pure phases. To show these results we use our previous achievements on local well-posedness together with suitable novel regularity results for the convective Cahn-Hilliard equation. The latter allows to obtain higher-order energy estimates to extend the local solution globally in time. To this aim the time evolution of energy type quantities has to be calculated and estimated carefully.

Abstract:This paper presents currently available pore-scale predictive technique for immiscible two-phase flow in complex porous media, which is based on the real structure description for the pore space. The Navier-Stokes equations were discretized using a finite volume method, while the volume-of-fluid method was used to capture the location of interfaces. The pore fluids flow was numerically simulated and the influence of wettability was studied based on the-numerical predictions. For more complex porous media, the porous structure was reconstructed using the micro CT scan images. The second method was Shan-Chen type multiphase LBM model, which was developed to perform the two-phase flow simulation in a 3D reconstructed porous domain. The detailed characteristic of the flow in porous media was described, which can be further used to evaluate the average effect of the flow in macro scale. The effects of porous structure wettability, surface tension and pressure gradient were discussed based on the numerical predictions. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
