Abstract:Nanosized zeolites have been found in extensive applications. Herein, a rapid two-step crystallization process (8 h) in a semisolid-like gel system, constructed by simply mixing and grinding solid silica gel, NaOH with TPAOH aqueous solution without extra water addition and any other additives, for the first time is demonstrated to synthesize nanosized silicalite-1 zeolites (similar to 66 nm) with high crystallinity and high product yield (>90%). The obtained nanosized silicalite-1 zeolites exhibit a large BET surface area (418 m(2) g(-1)), a high micropore surface area (316 m(2) g(-1)), and a rich micropore volume (0.14 cm(3) g(-1)). The rapid evolution process of nanosized zeolites could be decoupled into the nucleation stage at low temperatures and the crystallization stage at high temperatures during the two-step crystallization process. Importantly, the semisolid-like gel ensures fast nucleation. Moreover, in the later crystallization period, the fast crystal growth and inhibited ripening endow nanosized zeolite crystals with good crystallinity through a mass transfer-confined space. The obtained silicalite-1 zeolites were successfully applied in the preparation of (h0h)-oriented MFI zeolite membranes on hollow fibers, showing the flux up to 5.44 kg m(-2) h(-1) and the separation factor of 70 during the pervaporation test (5 wt % ethanol/water solution, 60 degrees C). This research develops a state-of-the-art synthetic approach for the efficient preparation of high-quality MFI-type nanozeolites.

Abstract:A zeolite phillipsite (PHI) analogue with low silica contents has been synthesized from a NH4F–Al2O3–SiO2–piperazine–H2O system. The obtained zeolite PHI analogue grows as agglomerates of intergrown submicron-sized crystals. The synthesis process in fluoride-based media has been investigated. It has been unequivocally demonstrated that no zeolite phase occurred in the absence of piperazine or NH4F. The results of CHN elemental analyses as well as of TG analyses confirmed that both piperazine and NH4+ had been incorporated into the zeolitic structure. Thus, the zeolite PHI analogue is seemingly derived from the cooperative structure-directing effect of the organic molecule piperazine and the inorganic cation NH4+. The use of a suitable combination of inorganic cation and organic molecule in fluoride-based media may provide an effective means of exploring new frameworks with low Si/Al ratios.
Control of crystallization rate and morphology of zeolite silicalite-1 in solvent-free synthesis

Abstract:The solvent-free synthesis of zeolites has attracted great attention due to its environmental benefits and high efficiency. In this study, the effects of amounts of synthesis powder, water and sodium hydroxide on the crystallization rate and morphology of zeolite crystals are investigated. The samples are characterized by XRD, SEM and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherm measurement. It is found that the crystallization rate increases with the increase of the amount of synthetic powder and also increases with the increase of water content in the synthetic powder. When a little amount of water (H2O/SiO2 = 1.04) is added into the synthetic powder (SiO2:0.15NH4F:0.035TPABr), the crystallinity almost reaches 100% after crystallization at 175 °C for 9 h. The addition of a little amount of sodium hydroxide (NaOH/SiO2 = 0.09) can decrease the crystal size and the addition of higher amount of NaOH (NaOH/SiO2 = 0.19) can promote the growth along a-axis, resulting in spherical silicalite-1 crystals (i.e., twins). Moreover, the addition of NaOH may incorporate mesopores into silicalite-1 zeolite crystals.

Abstract:To obtain large perfect crystals of zeolites, pyrocatechol as an additive was added into the two system: SiO2-NaOH-EG-R and SiO2-TPABr-NaOH-R-H2O (R: pyrocatechol, EG: ethylene glycol), Experimental results showed that the crystals synthesized in the presence of pyrocatechol have much larger size and better morphology than those synthesized in the absence of pyrocatechol, The role of pyrocatechol in the hydrothermal reaction mixture has been characterized by Si-29 NMR, IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy, and it was shown that silicon-pyrocatechol complex was formed in the reaction system.

Abstract:We have demonstrated here for the first time that high-silica ferrierite zeolite, designated as ZJM-2, is successfully synthesized by an induction of CDO-structure zeolite building units in the absence of organic templates. The resulting ZJM-2 has good crystallinity, high surface area, similar crystals shape, only tetrahedral Al3+ species, and abundant acidic sites.

Abstract:Mesoporous zeolite (silicalite-1, ZSM-5, TS-1) single crystals have been successfully synthesized by adding soluble starch or sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to a conventional zeolite synthesis system. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen sorption analysis, 27Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (27Al MAS NMR), temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD) and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis). The SEM images clearly show that all zeolite crystals possess the similar morphology with particle size of about 300nm, the TEM images reveal that irregular intracrystal pores are randomly distributed in the whole crystal. 27Al MAS NMR spectra indicate that nearly all of the Al atoms are in tetrahedral co-ordination in ZSM-5, UV–vis spectra confirm that nearly all of titanium atoms are incorporated into the framework of TS-1. The catalytic activity of meso-ZSM-5 in acetalization of cyclohexanone and meso-TS-1 in hydroxylation of phenol was also studied. The synthesis method reported in this paper is cost-effective and environmental friendly, can be easily expended to prepare other hierarchical structured zeolites.

Abstract:By using imidazole-substituted quaternary boron compound NaB (Im)(4) (Im=imidazole) as a structure directing agent (SDA) in the zeolite synthesis, we successfully obtained single crystals of aluminophosphate AlPO4-11 under solvothermal conditions. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, F-19 and B-11 NMR studies showed that these quaternary boron compounds acted as SDA buffers, undergoing the decomposition process to slowly release a low concentration of imidazole molecules under solvothermal conditions. The latter served as SDAs to form a limited number of zeolite nuclei, thus leading to the growth into large single crystals. Under similar conditions, the direct use of the corresponding free imidazole molecules in the synthesis produced only fine powders. This approach could be potentially applied to synthesize large crystals of other zeolites, given the availability of various quaternary boron compounds.

Abstract:Zeolite ZSM-5 has been synthesized with the organosilicon compound gamma-aminopropyl triethoxylsilane as structure-directing agent: using the composition 10SiO(2) : Al2O3 : 3-5Na(2)O : 0. 1-0. 5R : 40-100H(2)O (molar ratios). First of all, gamma-aminopropyl triethoxylsilane was quaternarized with bromoethane and ethyl alcohol. XRD, TG, DTA and SEM were used to characterize the sample. The investigation proves that the organosilicon compound resides intact at the channel intersections, and that the silicon atom in this species is located in a framework position. Prehydrolysis of the organosilane precursor is necessary for zeolite formation.

Abstract:Pure silica ITH zeolite is normally synthesized under neutral or acidic conditions in the presence of HF, but it is challenging for synthesis of this zeolite under alkaline conditions. In this work, it is successful for alkaline synthesis of pure silica ITH in the absence of HF using a designed organic template containing F species, showing that the sample obtained has high crystallinity associated with ITH structure, nanosheet morphology, and rich silanol nests. Very importantly, this ITH zeolite exhibited better performance in vapor phase Beckmann rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime than that of Silicalite‐1 zeolite, one of the best catalysts for this reaction. This work might offer a new opportunity for preparation of pure silica zeolites as efficient catalysts in the Beckmann rearrangement in the future.

Abstract:The aluminosilicate zeolite ZSM-43 (where ZSM = Zeolite Socony Mobil) was first synthesized more than 3 decades ago, but its chemical structure remained unsolved because of its poor crystallinity and small crystal size. Here we present optimization of the ZSM-43 synthesis using a high-throughput approach and subsequent structure determination by the combination of electron crystallographic methods and powder X-ray diffraction. The synthesis required the use of a combination of both inorganic (Cs+ and K+) and organic (choline) structure-directing agents. High-throughput synthesis enabled a screening of the synthesis conditions, which made it possible to optimize the synthesis, despite its complexity, in order to obtain a material with significantly improved crystallinity. When both rotation electron diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging techniques are applied, the structure of ZSM-43 could be determined. The structure of ZSM-43 is a new zeolite framework type and possesses a unique two-dimensional channel system limited by 8-ring channels ZSM-43 is stable upon calcination, and sorption measurements show that the material is suitable for adsorption of carbon dioxide as well as methane.

Abstract:Mesoporous zeolites were synthesized by a new organosilane template with double-oxycarbonyl carbon chains. The structure of the zeolite crystals was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements, and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which showed that their structure has the same characteristics as ZSM-5 zeolites, and there were about 4 um mesopores in the acquired zeolites.

Abstract:Owing to their valuable structural characteristics, CHA-type zeolites have great potential for applications in catalysis, adsorption and membrane separation. Aluminosilicate CHA with Si/Al ratio<100 can be prepared easily with few limitations. However, all-silica and high silica CHA zeolites (Si/Al ratio>100) can only be prepared in a solid-like precursor with low H2O/SiO2 ratio ∼5, which creates difficulties for the synthesis of CHA powders and membranes. Herein, we systematically studied the effect of various parameters on the synthesis of all-silica CHA in a diluted mother liquor with H2O/SiO2 ratio of 30. The key is the use of ammonium hexafluorosilicate ((NH4)2SiF6) as silica source. Pure phase all-silica CHA with size between 0.3–2 μm can be prepared in a broad temperature range (373–433 K) with low TMAdaOH/SiO2 ratio of 0.3. The use of (NH4)2SiF6 can be replaced with regular silica sources and ammonium fluoride. The successful synthesis of all-silica CHA zeolite in diluted mother liquor not only simplifies its synthesis, but also facilitates its applications as sorbents and membranes.

Abstract:By adding benzene-1,2-diol as a complex agent for silicon into the system: SiO2–TPABr–NaOH–R–H2O (R: benzene-1,2-diol), single crystals of zeolites silicalite-1 with different crystallite sizes ranging from 9×3×2 μm to 165×30×30 μm were obtained. Experimental results showed that crystals synthesized in the presence of benzene-1,2-diol have a much larger size and better morphology than those synthesized in the absence of benzene-1,2-diol, and their sizes were largely influenced by the content of benzene-1,2-diol in the reaction system. The role of benzene-1,2-diol in the hydrothermal reaction mixture has been characterized by 29Si-NMR, and it was shown that silicon–benzene-1,2-diol complex was formed in the reaction system, which was very important for the synthesis of large single crystals of zeolites.

Abstract:Stable aluminosilicate zeolites with extra-large pores that are open through rings of more than 12 tetrahedra could be used to process molecules larger than those currently manageable in zeolite materials. However, until very recently1-3, they proved elusive. In analogy to the interlayer expansion of layered zeolite precursors4,5, we report a strategy that yields thermally and hydrothermally stable silicates by expansion of a one-dimensional silicate chain with an intercalated silylating agent that separates and connects the chains. As a result, zeolites with extra-large pores delimited by 20, 16 and 16 Si tetrahedra along the three crystallographic directions are obtained. The as-made interchain-expanded zeolite contains dangling Si-CH3 groups that, by calcination, connect to each other, resulting in a true, fully connected (except possible defects) three-dimensional zeolite framework with a very low density. Additionally, it features triple four-ring units not seen before in any type of zeolite. The silicate expansion-condensation approach we report may be amenable to further extra-large-pore zeolite formation. Ti can be introduced in this zeolite, leading to a catalyst that is active in liquid-phase alkene oxidations involving bulky molecules, which shows promise in the industrially relevant clean production of propylene oxide using cumene hydroperoxide as an oxidant.
Assembly of Silicalite-1 Crystals Like Toy Lego Bricks into One-, Two-, and Three-Dimensional Architectures for Enhancing Its Adsorptive Separation and Catalytic Performances

Abstract:Many researchers have contributed to the assembly of zeolitic nanosheets and nanocrystallites into three-dimensional (3D) networks as it can remarkably improve the catalytic and/or adsorptive performances of zeolites. However, the applications of these synthesized materials are seriously limited because of low hydrothermal stability. A highly interesting strategy, but a great challenge, is the alignment of well-crystallized zeolite crystals into desirable architectures. Here, well-crystallized silicalite-1 crystals are assembled like toy Lego bricks into one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) architectures, and the assembly mechanism is investigated by combining elaborate experiments, in situ spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. A 1D architecture was formed by stacking crystals along the b axis with the assistance of ethanol that is selectively adsorbed on (100) and (001) crystal facets. Such adsorption increases the condensation energy barriers along a and c axes, but facilitates the condensation between (010) facets. The assembly of the crystals into well-arrayed 2D architectures is achieved using both ethanol and benzaldehyde because of their preferable adsorption on the (001) facet. When an amphiphilic copolymer (P123) was further added in the gel along with the substitution of ethanol by 1-propanol, a 3D network was fabricated by the agglomeration and self-pillaring of the 2D Lego bricks possibly with P123 aggregates as the substrate matrix. Excitingly, upon alignment of crystals into 2D architectures, the adsorptive selectivity of 1-butanol (2 wt %) to water of silicalite-1 increases by 45.3 times, while into 3D networks, the catalytic activity for the Beckmann rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime elevates by 79% along with a great enhancement of catalytic stability.

Abstract:Microporous silicas with pore sizes in the range intermediate between traditional microporous and mesoporous materials have been synthesized by using dodecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride as a template. These microporous silicas can be synthesized by either acidic S(+)X(-)I(+) or basic S(+)I(-) assembly pathways and consist of disordered channels with almost identical pore sizes of 12.2 Angstrom in both cases. Their BET surface areas are larger than 1000 m(2)/g after being calcined in air.

Abstract:Zeolites are microporous silicates with a large variety of applications as catalysts, adsorbents, and cation exchangers. Stable silica-based zeolites with increased porosity are in demand to allow adsorption and processing of large molecules but challenge our synthetic ability. We report a new, highly stable pure silica zeolite called ZEO-3, which has a multidimensional, interconnected system of extra-large pores open through windows made by 16 and 14 silicate tetrahedra, the least dense polymorph of silica known so far. This zeolite was formed by an unprecedented one-dimensional to three-dimensional (1D-to-3D) topotactic condensation of a chain silicate. With a specific surface area of more than 1000 square meters per gram, ZEO-3 showed a high performance for volatile organic compound abatement and recovery compared with other zeolites and metal-organic frameworks.
Synthesis of high alumina ZSM-5 molecular sieve with ethylene diamine as template

Abstract:Attempts were made to investigate compositional constraints in the synthesis of pentasil molecular sieves, Including aluminosilicate zeolites using ethylene diamine (C 2 DN) template, from the gel composition 1.85Na 2 O: aAl 2 O 3 : 15.2SiO 2 : 592H 2 O: 19.7C 2 DN in the temperature 177 "C for ten days. When a = 0.25 the product was ZSM-5 and then a = 1 the product was ZSM-35 and in between compositions the mixture of two were obtained. Reduce the time of crystallization time to 5 days give nanocrystalline material. XRD and FT-IR spectra in framework region of ZSM-5 synthesized using ethylene diamine template and without template are having similar pattern, however the intensity varies. Scanning electron microscopic picture of the both are varies. The structural stability of the zeolite ZSM-5 synthesized using no template was also found to be lower as compared with that for the ZSM-5 synthesized using ethylene diamine template. These differences may result from the occluded excess sodium.
