Abstract:This article, a reflection on the author's tetralogy The Rise of Modern Chinese Thought, focuses on three sets of antithetical concepts—empire and nation-state, rational bureaucracy ( junxian zhi) and feudal system ( fengjian zhi), rites/music and institutions—“continuity and rupture” in history and the idea of the trend of the times ( shishi); and the question of scientific outlook and national knowledge. It argues the importance of liberating the historical world of thought from the position as an object for our observation and transforming it into a perspective from which we can reflect on and observe the modern world of ours.

Abstract:"Diorama, path and project" by Torsten Hagerstrand is one of the most important contributions to the development of time geography. It introduced the diorama approach along the lines of "the live corporeality of humans and society", and it still enduringly inspires the study of everyday life and urban space in a space-time integrative framework. This article revisits the classic article and reflects on certain key ideas, such as the "thereness" of diorama and the continuity and corporeality of project realization. Specifically, we will stress the applicability and the usefulness of the diorama approach to understanding everyday life and urban space in transitional Chinese cities. Finally, we discuss the enduring power, some methodological issues, as well as research agendas on urban geography and planning research in Chinese cities based on the diorama approach in time geography.

＂The Chinese Encyclopedia＂ in Foucault’s The Order of Things

Abstract:In the preface of The Order of Things, Michel Foucault quotes and analyzes the classification of animals in a ＂certain Chinese encyclopedia＂ referred to by Borges, with which he initiates his brand new philosophical thinking. There are many discussions and interpretations by Chinese scholars on this part, but generally they understand Foucault from the perspective of the differences between China and the West, and they tend to blame him for these reasons. For example, they may think Foucault attached too much importance on the particularity of Chinese culture and the differences between Chinese and Western cultures, so he ignores the universality and communicability between cultures and regards China as an ＂other＂ different from the West, and even as the opposite of the West. For these scholars, Foucault tries to seek novelty, which is a kind of Western fiction and even cultural neo-colonialism. This article aims to rethink these thoughts and ideas. Through revisiting and re-reading the texts by Borges and Foucault, we will investigate whether these popular understandings in China are valid or reasonable.

Abstract:Abstract What would Chinese history look like with things taking the center stage? Our present understanding of this history is animated primarily by literate people in pursuit of examination degrees and sons, and often filtered through such modern social science categories as culture, ethnicity, and gender. In this introduction, I put the set of five articles in the special issue in conversation with recent research to identify new analytic categories and research strategies that accord agency to things, remap the parameters of Chinese history, and ponder the new directions afforded by the study of material cultures.

Abstract:This paper discusses several of Wang Jinkang's science-fiction works on the subject of the universe, such as With Me, Escape from the Mother Universe, Heavenly Father and Earthly Mother and Cosmic Crystal Egg. Based on an analysis of these works and Wang's creative writing trajectory, the paper summarizes the distinctive features of such universe-themed works: scientific rationality, fairy-tale-style plot setting, human–God duality and rational humanistic compassion. It concludes that Wang's works have not only crossed the gap between science and the humanities but also built a bridge between the two. Finally, this paper suggests that science-fiction writers provide a unique perspective for the reader by building a bridge between science and the humanities.

Abstract:This essay investigates how utopian thinking met with dystopian variations in contemporary Chinese science fiction. The dystopian gaze into the utopian dreams, the alternative histories contending with the utopian narratives, and the heterotopian experiments challenging ideological orthodoxy are the focus of my analysis. Reading the dystopian fiction by Chan Koonchung and science fiction stories and novels by Han Song, Bao Shu and Hao Jingfang etc., I do not intend to illustrate the utopian/ dystopian interventions in the political sense, but rather to explore the vigorous, multifaceted variations of utopia, dystopia, and heterotopia that these authors have created as discursive constructs to suggest alternatives to the utopia/dystopian dualism. Contemporary science fiction authors write back to the usual literary practice taking words as reflections of the world. To these writers, words are worlds.
