Geometry of Complex Bounded Domains with Finite-Volume Quotients

Abstract:We first show that for a bounded pseudoconvex domain with a manifold quotient of finite-volume in the sense of Kahler-Einstein measure, the identity component of the automorphism group of this domain is semi-simple without compact factors. This partially answers an open question in [Fra95]. Then we apply this result in different settings to solve several open problems, for examples, (1). We prove that the automorphism group of the Griffiths domain [Gri71] in ℂ^2 is discrete. This gives a complete answer to an open question raised four decades ago. (2). We show that for a contractible HHR/USq complex manifold D with a finite-volume manifold quotient M, if D contains a one-parameter group of holomorphic automorphisms and the fundamental group of M is irreducible, then D is biholomorphic to a bounded symmetric domain. This theorem can be viewed as a finite-volume version of Nadel-Frankel's solution for the Kahzdan conjecture, which has been open for years. (3). We show that for a bounded convex domain D⊂ℂ^n of C^2-smooth boundary, if D has a finite-volume manifold quotient with an irreducible fundamental group, then D is biholomorphic to the unit ball in ℂ^n, which partially solves an old conjecture of Yau. For (2) and (3) above, if the complex dimension is equal to 2, more refined results will be provided.
Positive Kobayashi Curvature Metrics on Ample Vector Bundles

Abstract:In this short note, we prove that a complex Finsler vector bundle with positive Kobayashi curvature must be ample, which partially solves a problem of S. Kobayashi posed in 1975. As applications, a strongly pseudoconvex complex Finsler manifold with positive Kobayashi curvature must be biholomorphic to the complex projective space; we also show that all Schur polynomials are numerically positive for complex Finsler vector bundles with positive Kobayashi curvature.

Abstract:The conformai properties of complex Finsler metrics are studied. We first give a characterization of a compact complex Finsler manifold to be globally conformai Kahler. By considering the total holomorphic curvature and total Ricci curvature in the volume preserved conformal classes, we then study the variational properties of Kahler Finsler metrics. By studying the spectral properties of two average metrics, the stabilities of critical Kähler Finsler metrics are verified. Finally, a Yamabe type problem for mean holomorphic Ricci curvature is considered, and a partial existence result is obtained.

Abstract:In this note, we study the relation between the existence of a negatively curved complete hermitian metric on a complex manifold M and the product structure of (or contained in) M. We introduce the concept of geometric ranks and give a curvature characterization of the rank one manifolds, which generalizes the previous results of P. Yang and N. Mok (see below). In the proof, we used the old techniques of Yau's Schwartz lemma and Cheng-Yau's result on the existence of Kahler-Einstein metrics.

Abstract:In this paper, first of all, according to Lu's and Zhang's works about the curvature of the Bergman metric on a bounded domain and the properties of the squeezing functions, we obtain that Bergman curvature of the Bergman metric on a bounded strictly pseudoconvex domain with $C^2$-boundary or bounded convex domain is bounded. Secondly, by the property of curvature symmetry on a Kähler manifold, we have the property: if holomorphic sectional curvature of a Kähler manifold is bounded, we can deduce that its sectional curvature is bounded. After that, applying to the Schwarz lemma from a complete Kähler manifold into a complex Finsler manifold, we get that a bounded strictly pseudoconvex domain with $C^2$-boundary or bounded convex domain admit complete strongly pseudoconvex complex Finsler metrics such that their holomorphic sectional curvature is bounded from above by a negative constant. Finally, by the Schwarz lemma from a complete Kähler manifold into a complex Finsler manifold, we prove the uniform equivalences of the Kobayashi metric and Carathéodory metric on a bounded strongly convex domain with smoothly boundary.

Abstract:We prove for $n\in\{3,4,5\}$ that the connected sum of a closed aspherical $n$-manifold with an arbitrary non-compact manifold does not admit a complete metric with nonnegative scalar curvature. In particular, a special case of our result answers a question of Gromov. More generally, we generalize the partial classification result of Chodosh, Li, and Liokumovich to the non-compact domination case with our newly-developed technique. Our result unifies all previous results of this type, and confirms the validity of Gromov's non-compact domination conjecture for closed aspherical manifolds of dimensions 3, 4, and 5.

Abstract:A domain is called a polyball if it is given as a direct product of open unit balls. We prove that every holomorphic invariant strongly pseudoconvex complex Finsler metric on a polyball is necessary a Kähler-Berwald metric with the holomorphic sectional curvature bounded between two negative constants, and its holomorphic bisectional curvature is nonpositive and bounded from below by a negative constant. These important curvature properties make it possible for us to establish a Schwarz lemma for holomorphic mappings f from a polyball into another polyball whenever they are endowed with arbitrary holomorphic invariant Kähler-Berwald metrics which are not necessary Hermitian quadratic.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend two celebrated inequalities by Busemann -- the random simplex inequality and the intersection inequality -- to both complex and quaternionic vector spaces. Our proof leverages a monotonicity property under symmetrization with respect to complex or quaternionic hyperplanes. Notably, we demonstrate that the standard Steiner symmetrization, contrary to assertions in a paper by Grinberg, does not exhibit this monotonicity property.

Abstract:In this article we show that a bounded domain is a domain of holomorphy if and only if it carries a complete Kähler-Einstein metric with negative Ricci curvature. The completeness theorem is generalized to a variety of subdomains on Kähler manifolds with curvature conditions. We also investigate the question of characterizing domains of holomorphy by holomorphic sectional curvature.In [2] Cheng and Yau constructed complete Kähler-Einstein metrics with negative Ricci curvature on strictly pseudoconvex domains with C* boundary, k= 5. Abstract:Our goal of this paper is to give a complete characterization of all holomorphic invariant strongly pseudoconvex complex Finsler metrics on the classical domains and establish a corresponding Schwarz lemma for holomorphic maps with respect to these invariant metrics. We prove that every $\mbox{Aut}(\mathfrak{D})$-invariant strongly pseudoconvex complex Finsler metric $F$ on a classical domain $\mathfrak{D}$ of rank $\geq 2$ is a Kähler-Berwald metric which is not necessary Hermitian quadratic, but it enjoys very similar curvature property as that of the Bergman metric on $\mathfrak{D}$. In particular, if $F$ is Hermitian quadratic, then $F$ is must be a constant multiple of the Bergman metric on $\mathfrak{D}$. This actually answers the $4$-th open problem posed by Bland and Kalka in [7]. We also obtain a general Schwarz lemma for holomorphic maps from a classical domain $\mathfrak{D}_1$ into another classical domain $\mathfrak{D}_2$ whenever $\mathfrak{D}_1$ and $\mathfrak{D}_2$ are endowed with arbitrary holomorphic invariant Kähler-Berwald metrics $F_1$ and $F_2$, respectively. The method used to prove the Schwarz lemma is purely geometric. Our results show that the Lu constant of $(\mathfrak{D},F)$ is both an analytic invariant and a geometric invariant which can only be more clearly seen in the complex Finsler setting. This also gives a nontrivial generalization of the classical Schwarz lemma on the classical domains previously established case-by-case by Look [31] with respect to the Bergman metric.

Half-space intersection properties for minimal hypersurfaces

Abstract:We prove ``half-space" intersection properties in three settings: the hemisphere, half-geodesic balls in space forms, and certain subsets of Gaussian space. For instance, any two embedded minimal hypersurfaces in the sphere must intersect in every closed hemisphere. Two approaches are developed: one using classifications of stable minimal hypersurfaces, and the second using conformal change and comparison geometry for $\alpha$-Bakry-Émery-Ricci curvature. Our methods yield the analogous intersection properties for free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in space form balls, even when the interior or boundary curvature may be negative. Finally, Colding and Minicozzi recently showed that any two embedded shrinkers of dimension $n$ must intersect in a large enough Euclidean ball of radius $R(n)$. We show that $R(n) \leq 2 \sqrt{n}$.

Abstract:We give an explicit lower bound, in terms of the distance from the boundary, for the Kobayashi metric of a certain class of bounded pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$ with $\mathcal{C}^2$-smooth boundary using the regularity theory for the complex Monge--Ampere equation. Using such an estimate, we construct a family of unbounded Kobayashi hyperbolic domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$ having a certain negative-curvature-type property with respect to the Kobayashi distance. As an application, we prove a Picard-type extension theorem for the latter domains.

Abstract:We investigate plane curves intersecting in at most two unibranched points to study the algebraic exceptional set appearing in standard conjectures of diophantine and hyperbolic geometry. Our first result compares the local geometry of two hypertangent curves, i.e. curves having maximal contact at one unibranched point. This is applied to fully describe the exceptional set and, more generally, the hyper-bitangency set, of a plane curve with three components.

Symmetry Integrability and Geometry Methods and Applications

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the following curvature equation where , , , and are positive non-integers for , while are integers for . Geometrically, a solution gives rise to a conical metric of curvature on the sphere, with conical singularities at , , , and , , with angles , , , and at , , , and , respectively. The metric or the solution is called co-axial, which was introduced by Mondello and Panov, if there is a developing map of such that the projective monodromy group is contained in the unit circle. The sufficient and necessary conditions in terms of angles for the existence of such metrics were obtained by Mondello-Panov (2016) and Eremenko (2020). In this paper, we fix the angles and study the locations of the singularities . Let be the set of those 's such that a co-axial metric exists, among other things we prove that (i) If , i.e., there is only one integer among , then is a finite set. Moreover, for the case , we obtain a sharp bound of the cardinality of the set . We apply a result due to Eremenko, Gabrielov, and Tarasov (2016) and the monodromy of hypergeometric equations to obtain such a bound. (ii) If , then is an algebraic set of dimension .
