Abstract:A simple method for the fabrication of tunable surfaces with wettability that can be manipulated rapidly and reversibly from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity is reported. A polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) was deposited on a rough substrate, and via ion exchange of the counterion in the PEM, the water contact angle of the surface was switched between <5 degrees and 164 degrees. By controlling the ion-exchange kinetics, on the same surface, completely erasable, rewritable gradient wettability from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity was conveniently achieved.

Abstract:Coatings with controllable wettability are of interest in a number of applications. Modulation of surface wettability is often necessary for these applications. It has been demonstrated many times that surface topography is key to the ability to make superhydrophobic surfaces, but at the same time surface chemistry is key. The layer-by-layer technique of fabricating coatings based on the complexation of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes can be a versatile method for producing precisely controlled thin films with a wide range of properties. In order to control wettability, hierarchical textures are generally needed, but the underlying surface energy of the material is also important. Generally, these films are made out of commercially available polymers, thereby limiting the range of available surface energies. Ion exchange of the counterions on the surface of the film is one way to modify materials properties, but we show that co-assembly with a surfactant is another way to achieve an even greater range of surface wettabilities. Our films have contact angles of as high as 110° with ion exchange and even up to 140° with surfactant co-assembly without any added texture to the surfaces. Co-assembly with a surfactant has not been widely studied with respect to polyelectrolyte multilayers and may prove to be a more general method to modify film properties.
Electrodeposited Surfaces with Reversibly Switching Interfacial Properties.

Abstract:Engineered surfaces with reversibly switching interfacial properties, such as wettability and liquid repellency, are highly desirable in diverse application fields but are rare. We have developed a general concept to prepare metallic porous surfaces with exceptionally powerful wettability switch capabilities and liquid-repellent properties through an extremely simple one-step electrochemical deposition process. The wettability switch and manipulative liquid-repellent properties are enabled by orientation change of the dodecyl sulfate ions ionically bonded to the porous membranes during electrodeposition. The porous membrane with adjustable wettability enables it to trap different lubricants on demand within the pores to form liquid-infused porous surfaces with varied liquid-repellent properties. We have demonstrated the application of the (liquid-infused) porous membrane in encryption, controllable droplet transfer, and water harvesting. Moreover, the silver porous membrane can be coated onto a copper mesh, forming a smart antifouling liquid gate capable of allowing water or oil to pass through on request.

Abstract:A novel wettability switchable surface which shields out any interference from driving energy is demonstrated. In this mechanism, a free-standing metal/polymer membrane with hydrophobic microposts is sustained by spacers, and electrostatic force is used to carry out the deflection of the metal/polymer membrane, hence changing the surface morphology as well as the fraction of a liquid/solid interface. Water contact angles under this mechanism can be manipulated from 131 degrees to 152 degrees, depending on the fraction of a liquid/solid interface. Since the driving energy of electrostatic action is shielded out by the ground electrode, the ingredients carried in the droplet can be thoroughly free from the interference and maintain functionality. Therefore, this mechanism has great potential to manipulate microdroplets for digital fluidic systems in bio-applications.

Abstract:We use a simple layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly and counterion exchange technology to rapidly and reversibly manipulate the oleophobicity of the textured aluminum surfaces. Such textured surfaces can be produced by the HCl etching and boiling water treatment of the flat aluminum plates. The LbL deposition of polyelectrolytes is performed on these surfaces to generate the polyelectrolyte multilayer films. The films are able to coordinate with perfluorooctanoate anions, leading to the surfaces with different oleophobicity. The resulting surface produced by 1.5 cycles of polyelectrolyte deposition exhibits superoleophobicity by displaying contact angles greater than 150° with low surface tension liquids. Counterion exchange in this polyelectrolyte multilayer emerged easily to control the surface composition, which leads to tunable wettability that can be rapidly and reversibly switched between superoleophobicity and superoleophilicity.

Abstract:We have demonstrated that the surface wettability of negatively charged polyimide films could be turned by electrostatic self-assembly of ionic liquids. The water contact angles of the polyimide films varied in the range 27-80 degrees for 13 different ionic liquids based on imidazolium and ammonium salts. The surface morphology of the resulting surfaces was characterized using atomic force microscopy. The results revealed that the assembly of longer-substituent cations was characterized by the formation of spherical nanoparticles that were formed due to sequent aggregation of cations on those electrostatically assembled ones via hydrophobic interaction. In this case, the counteranions are present in the assembled layers and the wettability is accordingly affected. Whereas for shorter-substituent cations, no aggregates were formed due to the less hydrophobic interaction than the electrostatic repulsive interaction between the cations, and the counteranions were absent from the assembled layers. This method can also be utilized to quantify the hydrophobicity of various ionic liquids.

Abstract:A dual-stimuli-responsive surface with tunable wettability, switching between hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, and responsivity to both temperature (T) and concentration of beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD), is reported. Such surfaces are obtained by simply fabricating a poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-adamantanyl acrylamide) P(NIPAAm-co-ADAAm) copolymer thin film on both a flat and an etched silicon substrate. Switching between hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity can be realized over both a temperature range of about 20 degrees C and over a relatively wide concentration of beta-CD range from 0 M to 1 x 10(-1) M.

Abstract:Surface wettability regulation plays a crucial role in antifouling and related applications. For regulating surface wettability, one of the effective approaches is to modulate the surface charge distribution. Herein, we report a theoretical study for unraveling the mechanistic relation between surface charge distribution and ionic substrate wettability. Specifically, acetonitrile liquids at ambient condition in contact with various ionic substrates are considered. At different surface charge distributions, the interfacial thermodynamic properties are investigated by means of molecular density functional theory. We find that the variation of the spatial interval among the discrete charges strongly alters the substrate-acetonitrile interaction and leads to an oscillation in the interfacial tension, indicating that the substrate can be tuned from a solvophobic one to a solvophilic one. This trend can be further enhanced by increasing the charge quantity. The underlying mechanisms are extensively discussed and expatiated. Our work provides theoretical guidance to engineer and regulate surface wettability.

Abstract:We describe a simple layer-by-layer (LbL) technology and counterion exchange procedure to tune the liquid wettability of commercially available cotton fabrics. A polyelectrolyte multilayer is deposited on the fabric surface by the LbL technology, and counterion exchange is used to control the surface composition and thereby to modulate the solid surface energy. The tunability of the solid surface energy, along with the inherent re-entrant texture of the cotton fabric, results in simultaneously switchable wettability between a nonwetting state and a fully wetted state for water and hexadecane. This switchable hydrophobicity and oleophobicity can be explained within a robustness factor, which is a quantitative criterion for the transition between the two states. The counterion exchange can be confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis.

Abstract:Materials with in situ reversible wettability have attractive properties but remain a challenge to use since the inverse process of liquid spreading is normally energetically unfavorable. Here, we propose a general electrochemical strategy that enables the in situ reversible superwetting transition between underwater superoleophilicity and superoleophobicity by constructing a binary textured surface. Taking the copper/tin system as an example, the surface energy of the copper electrode can be lowered significantly by electrodeposited tin, and be brought back to the initial high-energy state as a result of dissolving tin by removing the potential. Tin atoms with the water depletion layer inhibit the formation of a hydrogen-bonding network, causing oil droplets to spread over the surface, while copper atoms, with a high affinity for hydroxyl groups, facilitate replacing the oil layer with the aqueous electrolyte. The concept is applicable to other systems, such as copper/lead, copper/antimony, gold/tin, gold/lead and gold/antimony, for both polar and nonpolar oils, representing a potentially useful class of switchable surfaces.

Abstract:Inspired by the lotus leaf, scientists have developed many superhydrophobic surfaces, some of which show remarkable switching between hydrophobic and hydrophilic state under external stimuli. However, the switch usually relies on the change of chemical properties rather than on the modification of the topographic structure of the surface. In this paper, the roughness‐change‐related switchable wetting properties of microstructured responsive surfaces made of nematic liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) is reported. First, various carbonate LC monomers and side‐on LCEs are synthesized with low nematic‐to‐isotropic transition temperature, TNI. Then, LCEs prepared from 3″‐vinylcarbonyloxypropyl 2,5‐di(4′‐octyloxybenzoyloxy)benzoate monomer, with TNI of 76 °C and contraction of 34% are used to construct a surface covered with micropillar arrays by using a replica molding technique. The contraction of the micropillars induces a reversible roughness change of the microstructured surface. Water contact angle of this microstructured surface changed with temperature, indicating a successful approach at building a surface with switchable wetting properties.

Abstract:The Cu meshes with reversible super-wettability have multifunctions of self-cleaning, oil-water separa-tion, floating-oil collection and underwater oil lossless-transportation. However, the facile method to tune the surface wettability and prepare reversibly super-wetting Cu meshes remains a great challenge. In this work, one-step chemical-etching method was used to construct the hierarchically-structured CuO of nano-sheets and micro-clusters on Cu meshes to provide suitable surface roughness essential for super-wettability. The surface wettability of Cu mesh was then facilely tuned by controlling the adsorp-tion and desorption of C-containing species at the Cu mesh surface through C-rich ambience storage and IR irradiation for short duration. The super-wetting transition of Cu meshes between superhydrophobicity/superoleophilicity and superhydrophilicity/underwater-superoleophobicity could repeat for many cycles. Moreover, the super-wetting Cu meshes demonstrated excellent mechanical, physical and chemical stabilities. The switchable super-wettability endowed the Cu meshes with inte-grated multi-functions, which demonstrated remarkable performance of self-cleaning, oil-water separa-tion, floating-oil collection and underwater oil lossless-transportation. This study suggests that utilizing C-rich ambience storage and IR irradiation to control the content of C-containing species at the Cu mesh surface is a facile and effective way to tune the surface wettability of Cu meshes, which can be easily extended to realize super-wettability transition of various materials.(c) 2022 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. Abstract:A smart surface with switchable wettability has many important technological applications. Here we report an intelligent surface that can fast and reversibly switch its wettability through macroscopic shape change. The reported surface is constructed by integrating a superhydrophobic copper mesh into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel synthesized via solvent exchange. By elaborately tuning the pressure exerted on it, the wettability of the integrated mesh is able to vary between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity in a few seconds, and the switching occurs up to 500 cycles. Reversible switching is found to be mainly determined by the adhesion force between the copper mesh and the polymer gels. Interestingly, reversible switching of superhydrophobicity/superhydrophilicity and superoleophobicity/superoleophilicity in liquid media can also be achieved through a similar strategy. The present investigation offers a facile strategy to fabricate an integrated smart surface with switchable wettability aiming for many important technological applications.

Abstract:Poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethylammonium chloride] (PMETAC) was grafted onto cotton fabric by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). The wettability of the as-prepared cotton fabric surface can reversibly switch between superhydrophobic (154°) and superhydrophilic (< 5°) by exchanging the counterions between perfluorooctanoate anion (PFO) and SCN−, respectively. The effect of solvent on the counterion exchange was investigated, and we found that water was a poor solvent for counterion exchange, while other solvent systems, such as water/methanol, methanol and acetone, were good solvents for counterion exchange in this study. Moreover, the effect of the anions on the wettability of the PMETAC films was also studied. The as-prepared cotton fabric with controllable wettability may find application in soft superhydrophobic materials and multifunctional textiles.
Controllable and Gradient Wettability of Bilayer Two-Dimensional Materials Regulated by Interlayer Distance

Abstract:Surfaces with controllable and gradient wettability often require an elaborate design of the microstructure or its response under electrical, thermal, optical, pH, and other stimuli. Generally, the wettability change under these physical or chemical effects relies on a complex mechanism that is difficult to be quantitatively described. In this study, an online controlling strategy for surface wettability and the corresponding theoretical model are put forward based on a bilayer graphene-like atomic structure. Molecular dynamics results indicate that the surface wettability varies toward hydrophilicity after sticking a bottom material regardless of its wettability. But such an influence becomes weak with increasing interlayer distance, and the overall wettability approaches that of the upper layer material gradually. This variation is elucidated by the increase of the work of adhesion, providing new insight into the wetting transparency of graphene. A theoretical model of the governing relationship is established based on the work of adhesion, which correlates the overall surface wettability with the interlayer distance and the wettabilities of individual materials. Moreover, a surface with a uniform wettability gradient is achieved by inclining the bottom material. The spontaneous and steady motion of droplets can be induced by this gradient wettability. The relevant speedup behavior is evaluated through a theoretical model considering the varying interlayer distance, which reveals the critical role of the lower layer. This study proposes a novel strategy for controllable wetting and relevant gradient surfaces using prevailing two-dimensional materials, paving new routes to many applications such as microfluidic chips, virus diagnosis, and intelligent sensors.

Abstract:The switchable wettability is essential for widespread applications in droplet manipulation, rewritable liquid patterning, fluid carrying, and so forth. However, it remains difficult to achieve the multistimuli-responsive, large-range, and reversible wetting switching especially for liquids with low surface tensions through surface topographical management. Here, we apply a simple and effective template-free self-assembly strategy to fabricate microstructured superamphiphobic surfaces that can reversibly switch the wetting performance for oil by transforming the surface morphology in response to multiple stimuli of magnetic fields and mechanical strains. Notably, the noticeably different wetting switching of oil triggered by different stimuli is demonstrated. The contact angles of hexadecane droplets on the as-prepared surfaces can be reversibly switched between 150 ± 1° and 38 ± 2° in response to mechanical strains. Furthermore, the underlying mechanism of wetting switching has been further elucidated using mathematical models. Interestingly, these switchable surfaces dramatically demonstrate the ability to transport oil droplets, without requiring lubricating liquid films. This work not only achieves the large-range and reversible wetting switching for oil but also opens new avenues for fabricating tunable superamphiphobic surfaces with transformable mushroom-like microstructures that can be easily extended to microstructure-dependent friction or adhesion control and used in other fields.

Abstract:Intelligent surfaces with reversibly switchable wettability have recently drawn considerable attention. One typical strategy to obtain such a surface is to change the surface chemistry or the microstructure. Herein, we report a new smart surface for which the wettability was controlled by both the surface chemistry and microstructure. Various wetting states were reversibly and precisely controlled through heating, pressing, NIR irradiation, and oxygen plasma treatment. The excellent shape memory characteristics of shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) and the controlled release of hydrophobic/hydrophilic oxygen-containing functional groups contributed to this ability. Microcapsules were used to design these smart surfaces. They controlled the release of a fluorinated alkyl silane (FAS) through shell melting, changed the surface composition, and played a decisive role in protecting the FAS against hydrolysis and evaporation to ensure that the surface's wettability is recyclable. Controlling of the surface chemistry or microstructure was repeated for at least 19 or 16 cycles, respectively, which indicated excellent repeatability compared to other smart surfaces. Based on the excellent controllability, the surface exhibited multiple functions, such as liquid directional transport and coefficient of friction control. In addition, it maintained this extraordinary ability under harsh environments owing to the great stability of the SMPU and adequate protection of the FAS by the microcapsules. With switchable wettability based on the surface chemistry and microstructure, this work provides a new principle for designing smart surfaces with wettability controlled in two ways.

Abstract:Recently, smart surfaces with switchable wettability have aroused much attention. However, only single surface chemistry or the microstructure can be changed on these surfaces, which significantly limits their wetting performances, controllability, and applications. A new surface with both tunable surface microstructure and chemistry was prepared by grafting poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) onto the pillar-structured shape memory polymer on which multiple wetting states from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity can be reversibly and precisely controlled by synergistically regulating the surface microstructure and chemistry. Meanwhile, based on the excellent controllability, we also showed the application of the surface as a rewritable platform, and various gradient wettings can be obtained. This work presents for the first time a surface with controllability in both surface chemistry and microstructure, which starts some new ideas for the design of novel superwetting materials.
