Abstract:In this paper we study the entire solutions of a class of periodic Allen-Cahn equations (0.1) -Delta u(x, y) + a(x)W' (u(x, y)) = 0, (x, y) is an element of R-2, where a(x): R -> R+ is a periodic, positive function and W is an element of C-2(R, R) is a double-well potential. We look for the entire solutions of the above equation with asymptotic conditions u(x, y) -> sigma +/- as x -> +/-infinity uniformly with respect to y E R. Via variational methods we find infinitely many solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a new infinite-dimensional linking theorem without (PS)-type assumptions. The new theorem needs a weaker linking geometry and produces bounded (PS) sequences. The abstract result will be applied to the study of the existence of solutions of the strongly indefinite partial differential systems. Abstract:In this note, we describe sufficient conditions when block-diagonal solutions to Lyapunov and H-infinity Riccati inequalities exist. In order to derive our results, we define a new type of comparison systems, which are positive and are computed using the state-space matrices of the original (possibly nonpositive) systems. Computing the comparison system involves only the calculation of H-infinity norms of its subsystems. We show that the stability of this comparison system implies the existence of block-diagonal solutions to Lyapunov and Riccati inequalities. Furthermore, our proof is constructive, and the overall framework allows the computation of block-diagonal solutions to these matrix inequalities with linear algebra and linear programming. Numerical examples illustrate our theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, some sharp perturbation bounds for the Hermitian positive semi-definite solution to an algebraic Riccati equation are developed. A further analysis for these bounds is done. This analysis shows that there is, presumably, some intrinsic relation between the sensitivity of the solution to the algebraic Riccati equation and the distance of the spectrum of the closed-loop matrix from the imaginary axis.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive a Toeplitz-structured closed form of the unique positive semi-definite stabilizing solution for the discrete-time algebraic Riccati equations, especially for the case that the state matrix is not stable. Based on the found form and fast Fourier transform, we propose a new algorithm for solving both discrete-time and continuous-time large-scale algebraic Riccati equations with low-rank structure. It works without unnecessary assumptions, complicated shift selection strategies, or matrix calculations of the cubic order with respect to the problem scale. Numerical examples are given to illustrate its features. Besides, we show that it is theoretically equivalent to several algorithms existing in the literature in the sense that they all produce the same sequence under the same parameter setting.

Abstract:Inspired by the study of complex nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equations, we investigate nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equations for quaternionic matrices. We introduce the comparison matrix of a quaternionic matrix, extending that of a complex matrix, and use it to give a condition for the existence and uniqueness of the extremal solution. The solution can be obtained by a fixed-point iteration.

By this approach, we obtain the existence of infinitely many geometrically distinct solutions for a stationary periodic Schrödinger equation, in which the linear part is strongly indefinite and the nonlinear term is allowed to change sign in general ways.

Abstract:The coupled algebraic Riccati equations have wide range of applications in the fields such as control theory and etc. In this paper we consider numerical solution of nonsymmetric coupled algebraic Riccati equations. A class of alternating direction iteration method is proposed to solve the equation, and convergence analysis of this method is given. Theoretical analysis and numerical experiments have shown that the ADI method proposed in this paper is feasible and is more effective compared to several existing methods under certain conditions.

Abstract:We give a rank characterization of the solution set of algebraic Riccati inequality (ARI) for both controllable and uncontrollable systems. Assuming an existence of a solution of the corresponding algebraic Riccati equation (ARE), we characterize the boundedness/unboundedness properties of solutions of ARI for controllable/uncontrollable systems without any assumption on sign controllability. As a consequence of our observations, we obtain Willems' result $K_{min}\leq K\leq K_{max}$ for an ARI in the case of controllable systems and explore some structure on the extremal solutions. We also consider the curious case of uncontrollable purely imaginary eigenvalues and the behavior of the solution set of ARI. In particular, we show that a system is controllable if and only if the set of solutions of an ARI is bounded. In addition, we study the effect of the position of eigenvalues of the system matrix in the complex plane on the behavior of the solution set of ARIs. Furthermore, we obtain a rank parametrization for solutions of ARI for controllable systems.

Abstract:In this article, we study the existence of multiple solutions for the singular semilinear elliptic equation involving critical Sobolev-Hardy exponents -Δu-μu|x|2=α|u|2*(s)-2u|x|s+βα(x)|u|r-2u,x∈Rℕ. By means of the concentration-compactness principle and minimax methods, we obtain infinitely many solutions which tend to zero for suitable positive parameters α, β.

Abstract:For the nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equation arising from transport theory, we concern about solving its minimal positive solution. In [1], Lu transferred the equation into a vector form and pointed out that the minimal positive solution of the matrix equation could be obtained via computing that of the vector equation. In this paper, we use the King-Werner method to solve the minimal positive solution of the vector equation and give the convergence and error analysis of the method. Numerical tests show that the King-Werner method is feasible to determine the minimal positive solution of the vector equation.
