Abstract:In this paper,three kinds of vacuum infusion epoxy resin systems,i.e.,MERICAN 3311 A/B,another domestic product and an imported product,for wind turbine blades were comparatively analyzed.The wettability of these epoxy resin systems for glass fibers were investigated,and the mechanical properties of their composites prepared by vacuum infusion molding process,were also studied.The results show that MERICAN 3311A/B had low viscosity and good wettability to glass fiber,which was satisfactory for vacuum infusion with glass fibers.Accordingly,through testing the mechanical properties of resin fiberglass plates,three kinds of epoxy resin systems all had good mechanical behavior,and the strength and modulus of MERICAN 3311A/B even exceeded the imported product and the other domestic product.Therefore,according to the comprehensive study of the behaviors,MERICAN 3311A/B can fufill the needs of large-scale wind turbine blades,which can be used to manufacture wind turbine blade.

Abstract:The development situation of wind power generation and forming process and requirement of wind turbine blade were briefly introduced.MFE-VARIM-200 epoxy vinyl ester resin for wind turbine blade was developed.The viscosity,gel time,curing shrinkage rate and properties of cured product were tested.The results showed that the viscosity of MFE-VARIM-200 was lower than 0.2 Pa·s at 25 ℃.The gel time was longer than 2 h and the linear shrinkage was less than 0.3%.MFE-VARIM-200 met the vacuum infusion process requirement and the mechanical properties of cured resin could meet the requirement of matrix resin of wind turbine blade.

Abstract:Resource utilization of wind turbine blades. Glass fiber‐reinforced epoxy resin composite materials are widely used in various fields because of their excellent properties, especially in the stringent performance requirements of wind turbine blades manufacture for wind power generation. However, the irreversible cross‐linking network of the epoxy resin makes it difficult to recycle. In recent years, the management of large amounts of decommissioned wind turbine blade waste has become spotlight. This study used self‐developed solid‐state shear milling technology to effectively remove the epoxy resin from the glass fiber surface while preserving its high aspect ratio, ensuring its mechanical reinforcement potential. Furthermore, this process also significantly reduced epoxy resin particle size. Subsequently, composites with filler contents up to 50 wt.% were formulated with polypropylene. In the optimized composition, the material exhibited a remarkable 37.1% increase in tensile strength, 147.3% increase in modulus, and 63.8% increase in flexural strength, 165.5% in modulus, respectively. In this research, we conducted a comprehensive exploration into the effects of modifier structure and powder content on different properties of composites, contributing to a deeper understanding of these key factors.

Abstract:Although epoxy resin has been extensively used in the field of wind turbine blades, polyurethane has attracted much attention in recent years, due to its potential value of better fatigue resistance, lower processing viscosity and higher strength than epoxy resin blades. Herein, we construct a dense cross-linking structure in polyurethane (PU) based on different amounts of hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) with low processing viscosity and excellent mechanical properties. By increasing the content of HPMA, the thermal stability of PU is enhanced, but the micro-morphology does not change significantly. When the content of HPMA is 50 g (in 200 g copolymer), the PU sample PH-50 exhibits a viscosity of 70 MPa·s and a gelation time of 120 min at 25 °C, which is sufficient to complete processes like pouring and filling. By post-curing the PH-50 at 80 °C for 2 h, the heat distortion temperature can reach 72 °C, indicating the increase of temperature resistance. The PU copolymers also have excellent mechanical and dynamic thermo-mechanical properties due to the cross-linking structure between PU chains and poly-HPMA chains. Additionally, the PU copolymer has excellent compatibility with various glass fiber fabrics (GFF), showing a good match in the vacuum infusion experiment and great properties in the mechanical test. By compounding PH-50 with GFF, the composite with high strength is easily prepared for a wind turbine blade in various positions. The tensile strengths of the composites are all over 1000 MPa in the 0° direction. Such composites are promising for the future development of wind turbine blades that meet the stringent requirements for outstanding processing and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Wind turbine (WT) blade fabrication typically employs thermosetting resins, whose recycling challenges post-retirement have resulted in environmental pressures. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop a low-viscosity, high-performance, and recyclable material with excellent mechanical properties that is compatible with WT fabrication processes, serving as a viable alternative to traditional epoxy resins. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) resin is considered a promising candidate for replacing epoxy resins. However, the mechanical properties of PMMA still require improvement. In this study, we investigated the effects of introducing copolymerized monomers on the comprehensive performance of PMMA resin without affecting its viscosity, examining the influence of these copolymerized monomers on the material's thermal and mechanical properties. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties of the synthesized PMMA-based copolymers were compared with those of blade-specific epoxy resin (WD0135). The results revealed that compared to WD0135, the flexural strength and modulus of the prepared PMMA copolymers significantly increased to 96.6 and 3158.6 MPa, respectively, with a tensile strength reaching 74.2 MPa. Consequently, this series of PMMA-based resins demonstrates immense potential for large-scale material part fabrication via casting techniques.

A recyclable epoxy for composite wind turbine blades

Abstract:Disposal of wind turbine blades, which are generally non-biodegradable and non-recyclable products comprised largely of fiber-reinforced thermoset polymers (FRPs), pose environmental problems when components reach end-of-service-life. Because the global wind turbine market shows steady year-over-year growth, the need for a recycling solution for wind blade FRPs is urgent and growing rapidly. In the present study, recyclable resins, formulated using proprietary epoxy curing agents (Cleavamine®, Adesso), were charactered and analyzed for processability and recyclability. Protocols for vacuum infusion processing were developed for these recyclable resins. Secondly, laminates of glass fibers and the above epoxy matrices were first produced then recycled, and the properties of recovered fibers were evaluated. Matrix and laminate properties were compared to a benchmark commercial epoxy presently used in commercial wind blades. Results showed that vacuum infusion with the recyclable resins yielded laminates with low void contents and properties comparable to non-recyclable commercial epoxies, and the recovered glass fibers retained surface quality comparable to virgin fibers. Furthermore, results also showed that the recovered matrix residue can be re-used in second-life applications, effectively completing the closed-loop recycling method in this study.
Carbon Fiber Reinforced Shape Memory Epoxy Composites with Superior Mechanical Performances

Abstract:For the shape memory polymers' (SMPs) applications in demanding, high performance scenarios are usually limited by their poor mechanical performances during shape transformation. In this work, shape memory epoxy composites (SMEPCs) with superior mechanical properties are fabricated by adding various short and continuous carbon fibers (CFs) into neat shape memory epoxies (SMEPs) matrix. The resultant SMEPC's storage modulus (E) at room temperature is as high as 37 GPa, and the maximum recovery force exceeds 4.4 GPa, with good shape memory capabilities. These properties are at least an order of magnitude higher than those in existing typical SMP systems. The excellent mechanical properties of the fibers and their ability to retard crack propagation in the matrix are believed to play an important role in achieving high moduli below and above the shape-memory triggering temperature. The potential applications of such SMEPCs are demonstrated with wind blades. Experimental results and numerical models regarding air flow velocity variation as initiated by shape change in the blades indicate that our SMEPCs can sustain continuous stable mechanical state and provide variable wind speeds. These CF reinforced SMEPCs can be employed as smart structural materials to automatically switch shapes in response to the change in environment, such as those seen in aero foils and energy harvesters.

Abstract:In recent years,as the size of wind blade is becoming bigger and bigger,the production cycle becomes much longer.In order to effectively reduce the production cycle of wind blade and save the production cost,it is necessary to conduct a research on the curing process of epoxy resin for production of wind blade.The paper introduces four different curing methods which are selected to be compared with each other.The result shows that through mechanical and thermal test the curing process can be evaluated in addition the production cycle can be effectively reduced by optimizing the curing process.

Abstract:The wind turbine blades should be painted with the protective coating layers to get the excellent properties like weatherability and erosion resistance in order to work stably for a long term with fewer repairs.This paper introduced the progress of the polymer resin materials in the wind turbine blades protection field,including the popular polyurethane,lower surface energy fluoropolymer and polyacrylate with better adhesion ability.These various polymers will be used as a single component or compound to form a one-layer or multi-layer coating,endowing the coating best comprehensive performance.

Abstract:Wind turbine blades are typically sophisticated structures with complex geometry and composite layup. The realistic loads acting on blades serviced in harsh offshore environments are fully coupled dynamic loads involving wind, wave, current, servo-control, gravity and other inertial loads. This work presents an easy-to-implement methodology for the time-domain detailed analysis of three-dimensional (3D) blade structure, by combining fully coupled dynamic simulator and general finite element program. As a practical example subjected to multiple marine environmental loadings, one of the rotating composite blades atop a 5-Megawatt (MW) monopile-supported offshore wind turbine (OWT) in soft clay is used for verifying this method step by step, and the effect of rotation and foundation flexibility on blade behaviours is explored. Good agreement between OpenFAST and proposed method in tip deflections and root reaction loads is visible from validation results, and the recommendations on how to further improve this method in future iterations are made. Subsequently, based on stress-time history of blade composite layups, time-domain 3D multiscale analysis including the failure evaluation for layers in outer shell and shear webs using Tsai-Wu strength criteria, as well as the fatigue damage assessment of carbon spar caps was performed.

Abstract:A 10.3 m wind turbine (WT) blade has been designed to improve structural efficiency of rotor blades. The blade was featured with glass/polyester composites, flatback in the inboard region, thick airfoils in the mid-span region and transversely stepped spar cap thickness. This paper provided an overview of static bending test performed on the blade. Deflections, strains, load-carrying capacity, and failure behavior of the blade were investigated. Finite element (FE) analysis was carried out to complement test and to provide more insights into structural performance of the blade. The blade exhibited linear behavior in spar caps and aft panels at the maximum chord, and it continued to withstand applied loads well beyond the occurrences of local buckling of the shear web and the flatback at the maximum chord. The inboard region showed exceptional load-carrying capacity with failure loads larger than 420% test loads. Through this study, potential structural advantages by applying proposed structural features to large composite blades for multi-megawatt (MW) wind turbines were addressed.

Abstract:Composite material has higher ratio of strength to weight and ratio of stiffness to weight than other ma-terials,and may change its performance within a certain range to raise its bearing capacity by layer lay-up optimiza-tion design. Composite materials have been successfully applied in the design of large wind turbine blade. Blade is one of the most important parts of wind turbine and bears more complicated loading. Well-designed blade can gain higher power coefficient and better economic profit. From the state of art and trend of wind power generation in the world,the installed capacity increases year by year. Considering its environmental protection and renewability,there is a huge space for development of wind power generation. Finite element analysis of a composite blade was performed in this paper with considering the work characteristics of the blade. This work can be em-ployed to evaluate the reliability and economic efficiency in design of blade structure.

Abstract:The increasing prominence of glass-fibre-reinforced plastics (GFRPs) in the wind energy industry, due to their exceptional combination of strength, low weight, and resistance to corrosion, makes them an ideal candidate for enhancing the performance and durability of wind turbine blades. The unique properties of GFRPs not only contribute to reduced energy costs through improved aerodynamic efficiency but also extend the operational lifespan of wind turbines. By modifying the epoxy resin with carbon nanofillers, an even higher degree of performance can be achieved. In this work, graphene nanoplatelet (GNP)-enhanced GFRPs are produced through industrial methods (filament winding) and coupons are extracted and tested for their mechanical performance after harsh environmental aging in high temperature and moisture. GNPs enhance the in-plane shear strength of GFRP by 200%, while reducing their water uptake by as much as 40%.

Abstract:Wind turbine generators with high power will develop increasingly to achieve an ambitious goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, demanding urgently larger and lighter blades with long service life and high mechanical strength. Here we fabricate renewable composites with thiol-functionalized carbon fibers (TCF) and epoxy-ended hyperbranched polymers (HT 12 ), exhibiting a competitive property. Compared with the corresponding performance of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)/pristine carbon fibers composites, the tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and interlaminar shear strength of HT 12 /TCF composites are increased by 89.84%, 154.55%, 217.89%, 366.62%, and 376.52%, respectively. The service life of the HT 12 /TCF composites is about 200 years at 40 °C by simulating environmental experiments of acid rain and seawater resistance, being much longer than DGEBA/carbon fibers of about 20 years. Additionally, the HT 12 /TCF composites can be rapidly decomposed into oligomers and carbon fibers under mild conditions, which can be reused to prepare HT 12 /TCF composites by reacting directly with formaldehyde via a condensation between the amino group and the aldehyde group. After recycling twice, the composites still maintain high mechanical strength, suggesting highly efficient renewability of carbon fibers and epoxy resins. This research provides a sustainable approach for preparing high-performance environmentally-friendly epoxy resin/carbon fiber composites capable of uprecycling, and well-balancing service life and performance.

Abstract:In this paper the wave transmissivity of ultra-high strength polyethylene(UHSPE) fiber/vinyl ester resin(VER),UHSPE fiber/epoxy,Aramid/VER,and Aramid/epoxy composites are studied in detail.The content and type of the resins,structure and orientation of the fiber are discussed.The dielectric constant is analyzed by means of SEM images.The results show that UHSPE fiber/VER composites have optimum wave transmissivity.

Abstract:Bamboo has many engineering and environmental attributes that make it an attractive material for utilization in wind turbine blades. This paper examines the mechanical properties of a novel bamboo-poplar epoxy laminate which is being developed for wind turbine blades. Information provided in this paper includes an overview of the laminate construction and initial data for the monotonic tensile and compressive stress-strain behavior and tension-tension fatigue life of panels formed by hot-pressing. In addition, a discussion of fracture resistance of the bamboo-poplar laminate, under Mode I and Mode II loading conditions is provided.

Abstract:Bamboos, a kind of bio-materials, grow fast and have good mechanical behaviors. The properties of outside strip of bamboo are better than those of inside, so the grading process was developed, which can make the laminate bamboo strip lumber (LSBL) of grading A, B, C and D. The advanced bio-composites, compared with other materials, can replace GFRP and wood/epoxy, and can be used in wind blades as a new generation of materials. This new materials have many advantages, such as renewable, less dissipation of energy, low cost, no waste and the worn-out products can be disposed easily.
