Abstract:Development of natural products relies heavily on advanced separation technologies for extraction from abundant biomass raw material sources. A novel approach for isolating natural products and their precursors is the use of the poly(ionic liquid). Poly(ionic liquid) extractants provide the polarity, designability and selectivity of ionic liquids while being less toxic and more easily recoverable. In this review, synthetic methods of polycations, polyanions and polyzwitterions are summarized. The latest progress in the use of poly(ionic liquid)-mediated solid phase extraction, solid phase microextraction, molecular imprinted solid phase extraction, liquid-liquid extraction and capillary electrophoresis technologies to separate natural products such as flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols and proteins are reviewed. This will include a description of the proposed separation mechanism and the features of this approach including the reported efficiencies, stability, and recoverability of poly(ionic liquid)s. The specific focus will be on the use of smart polymeric materials for separation of natural products. Moreover, the designing and synthetic tailoring of new species to address current challenges and expand the applicability of poly(ionic liquid)-mediated technologies for separating natural products will be introduced.

Abstract:Solid phase extraction is widely used in sample pretreatment, concentration and analysis processes due to high selectivity and suitability for low concentration sample system. In this review, we systematically summarized and discussed the development trends of solid phase extraction by bibliometrics method. By analyzing papers output scale, the research and development direction of solid phase extraction technology is prospected. We also give an overview on current strategies of novel solid phase extraction from the separation medium and separation technology. The paper aims to describe the global research profile and the development trends of solid phase extraction, to help researchers to accurately grasp the research trend and to provide support for scientific research institutions to formulate scientific policies and strategic plans. Furthermore, the prospect of the development and application of solid phase extraction is also discussed.

Abstract:Sample preparation of target compounds from biological, pharmaceutical, environmental, and food matrices is one of the most time-consuming steps in analytical procedures. Extraction techniques are dominant, especially those based on the processes running on the phase such as liquid-liquid and/or liquid-solid. Due to the reproducibility of data, precision, relatively low cost of the appropriate analysis, simplicity of the determination, and the possibility of direct combination of those techniques with other methods (both on-line and off-line), they have become the most widespread in routine determinations. Additionally, sample pretreatment procedures have to be more selective, cheap, quick, and environmentally friendly. Selectivity is obtained by using procedures based on immunoaffinity or molecular imprinting. Reduction of costs can be obtained by automation of the extraction procedures (automated SPE) or techniques like column-switching. Reducing at least the time for sample preparation is achieved by introducing miniaturization techniques (multi-well SPE). This review summarizes the current achievements and application of solid phase extraction (SPE). The main aim is to deal with the utilization of different types of sorbents for solid-phase extraction and emphasize the use of new synthesized sorbents as well as to bring together studies on a systematic approach to SPE method development.

Abstract:In order to measure low concentrations of analytes in plasma and urine, it is often necessary to extract and concentrate them. With solid-phase extraction (SPE), this is achieved by partitioning the analytes between a solid and a liquid or headspace vapour. A wide range of high-quality materials is now available to do this, offering a variety of separation modes for different applications. These include partitioning using reversed-phase, normal-phase, ion-exchange, restricted-access and immunoaffinity sorbents or molecularly imprinted polymers and, increasingly, combinations of these processes. Solid-phase microextraction was introduced to analyse volatile and semi-volatile compounds. The range of sampling formats has expanded from simple packed syringes to cartridges, disks, SPE pipette tips and 96-well plates. These developments have facilitated automated off- and on-line sample processing. The basic principles of SPE and the recent innovations are reviewed here. This is a technological growth area. Some of the developments are finding application in clinical toxicology. However, they could also be of wider value in clinical chemistry--for example, for analyses of volatile and non-volatile metabolites, peptides, radioactive elements and trace metal speciation.

Abstract:Analytical processes involving sample preparation, separation, and quantifying analytes in complex mixtures are indispensable in modern-day analysis. Each step is crucial to enriching correct and informative results. Therefore, sample preparation is the critical factor that determines both the accuracy and the time consumption of a sample analysis process. Recently, several promising sample preparation approaches have been made available with environmentally friendly technologies with high performance. As a result of its many advantages, solid-phase extraction (SPE) is practiced in many different fields in addition to the traditional methods. The SPE is an alternative method to liquid–liquid extraction (LLE), which eliminates several disadvantages, including many organic solvents, a lengthy operation time and numerous steps, potential sources of error, and high costs. SPE advanced sorbent technology reorients with various functions depending on the structure of extraction sorbents, including reversed-phase, normal-phase, cation exchange, anion exchange, and mixed-mode. In addition, the commercial SPE systems are disposable. Still, with the continual developments, the restricted access materials (RAM) and molecular imprinted polymers (MIP) are fabricated to be active reusable extraction cartridges. This review will discuss all the theoretical and practical principles of the SPE techniques, focusing on packing materials, different forms, and performing factors in recent and future advances. The information about novel methodological and instrumental solutions in relation to different variants of SPE techniques, solid-phase microextraction (SPME), in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME), and magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) is presented. The integration of SPE with analytical chromatographic techniques such as LC and GC is also indicated. Furthermore, the applications of these techniques are discussed in detail along with their advantages in analyzing pharmaceuticals, biological samples, natural compounds, pesticides, and environmental pollutants, as well as foods and beverages.

Abstract:Aptamers are short single-stranded oligonucleotides within randomly synthesized nucleic acid libraries by a systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment. Because of specific identification for target molecule, solid phase extraction technique based on aptamers exhibits great potential for extraction, separation, purification and enrichment of trace-target analytes from complex samples, and it attracts more and more attention. This article brings a comprehensive survey of recent developments of solid phase extraction techniques based on aptamers, including the preparation of aptamer-based sorbents, the solid phase extraction procedure and the applications of aptamer-based solid phase extraction. Limits and prospects for aptamer-based solid phase extraction are also discussed.

Abstract:Hyphenation of solid-phase microextraction(SPME),which integrates sample extraction,concentration,desorption and injection in one step,with HPLC is widely applied to analyze non-volatile substance residues quantitatively and qualitatively.However semi-automation,lack of candidate SPME coating,instability of the coating restricted the progress and application of SPME-HPLC.Corresponding strategies and recent progress are stated in detail,including different SPME-HPLC interfaces,novel coating methods and promising SPME materials.The future of SPME-HPLC aims at complete automation,time-saving,high throughput and high sensitivity.

Abstract:<p>Sample pretreatment is essential for analysis of complicated real samples due to their complex matrices and low analyte concentrations. Among all sample pretreatment methods, solid–phase extraction is arguably the most frequently used one. However, the majority of available solid‐phase extraction adsorbents suffer from limited selectivity. Molecularly imprinted polymers are a type of tailor–made artificial antibodies and receptors with specific recognition sites for target molecules. Using molecularly imprinted polymers instead of conventional adsorbents can greatly improve the selectivity of solid‐phase extraction, and therefore molecularly imprinted polymer–based solid‐phase extraction has been widely applied to separation, clean up and/or preconcentration of target analytes in various kinds of real samples. In this article, after a brief introduction, the recent developments and applications of molecularly imprinted polymer–based solid‐phase extraction for determination of different analytes in complicated real samples during the 2015–2020 are reviewed systematically, including the solid‐phase extraction modes, molecularly imprinted adsorbent types and their preparations, and the practical applications of solid‐phase extraction to various real samples (environmental, food, biological and pharmaceutical samples). Finally, the challenges and opportunities of using molecularly imprinted polymer–based solid‐phase extraction for real sample analysis are discussed.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Solid-phase extraction is a sample preparation technique suitable for trace enrichment, matrix simplification, and media transfer for gas and solution phase samples. This technique employs adsorbents in cartridge, disk, or membrane format for sampling and thermal desorption or solvent elution for sample recovery. Typical adsorbents for sampling include inorganic oxides, low-specificity sorbents (e.g., carbon, porous organic polymers, etc.), organosiloxane-bonded silica materials, and class-specific sorbents (e.g., molecularly imprinted polymers, immunosorbents, surface-bound macrocyclic ligands, restricted access materials). To assist method development a fairly good understanding of the theory of operation (e.g., prediction of breakthrough volumes, sorbent selectivity, prediction of elution volumes) based on the plate height model for short sorbent beds and the solvation parameter model for retention is available for both cartridge and disk sampling devices. Empirical rules for sample processing are summarized for conditions not covered by theoretical models, often as a result of inadequate information regarding sample properties. Various approaches to partial or full automation of the sampling process are described for off-line and coupled-column systems.

Abstract:Sample preparation maintains a key bottleneck in the whole analytical procedure. Solid‐phase sorbents (SPSs) have garnered increasing attention in sample preparation research due to their crucial roles in achieving high clean‐up and enrichment efficiency in the analysis of trace targets present in complex matrices. Novel nanoscale materials with improved characteristics have garnered considerable interest across different scientific disciplines due to the limited capabilities of traditional bulk‐scale materials. The purpose of this review is to offer a thorough summary of the latest developments and uses of SPSs in preparing samples for chromatographic analysis, focusing on the years 2020–2024. The techniques for preparing SPSs are examined, such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), carbon nanoparticles (CNPs), molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), and metallic nanomaterials (MNs). Examining the pros and cons of different extraction methods, including solid‐phase extraction (SPE), magnetic SPE (MSPE), flow‐based SPE (FBA‐SPE), solid‐phase microextraction (SPME), stir‐bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), and dispersive SPE (DSPE), is the main focus. Furthermore, this article presents the utilization of SPE technology for isolating common contaminants in various environmental, biological, and food specimens. We highlight the persistent challenges in SPSs and anticipate future advancements and applications of novel SPSs.

Abstract:The applications of the aqueous two-phase extraction(ATPE)in these years were summarized,and the advances on the research of ATPE were reviewed.The novel aqueous two-phase systems were developed by using the cheaper phase forming polymer.In order to improve the selectivity and separation efficiency,the affinity extraction using aqueous two-phase systems(ATPS)which links affinity ligand to polymer in traditional ATPS got progressed.The integration with related techniques was also the development direction of ATPE,which overcame some shortcomings in single ATPE.Although the application of the extraction equipments and continuous operation technique in ATPE indicated that the industrializations of APTE were growing up,establishing the thermodynamic models and theories about the partitioning of solute in ATPS need to be optimized.

Abstract:Solid-phase extraction using cartridge and disc devices is a widely used sample-preparation technique for isolation, concentration, clean-up and medium exchange. To meet the varied needs of contemporary applications, there is available an ever-increasing range of sorbent chemistries based on inorganic oxides, low-specificity (chemically bonded, porous polymer and carbon) and compound and group-selective (ion exchange, mixed mode, macrocyclic, restricted access, immunoaffinity and molecularly imprinted polymer) materials. Advanced device formats facilitate processing of problem samples combined with a high level of automation. Approaches to computer-aided method development promise to replace tedious trial-and-error procedures with fast simulations based on suitable kinetic and retention models.

Abstract:Sample preparation is important for isolating desired components from complex matrices and greatly influences their reliable and accurate analysis. Recent trends in sample preparation include miniaturization, automation, high-throughput performance, online coupling with analytical instruments, and low-cost operation through extremely low or no solvent consumption. Microextraction techniques, such as liquid-phase microextraction and solid-phase microextraction, have these advantages over the traditional approaches of liquid–liquid extraction and conventional solid-phase extraction. This review focuses primarily on these microextraction techniques developed over the last decade, and presents a summary of the characteristics of various approaches in drug analysis.
