Abstract:Qualitative and quantitative studies were performed on 148 Corsac fox feces collected on eastern prairie of Inner Mongolia in spring of 2003 and 2004 and in summer of 2005. Diet of Corsac fox was analyzed by the methods of frequency of occurrence and relative weight of remains of prey types with the help of prey tracks and remains. Results reveal that rodents are the primary diet for Corsac fox, and birds and insects take the second place. Food items of rodents contain Cricetulus barabensis, Microtus brandti, and Citellus dauricus, accounting for over 50% of the total, while others contain Marmota sibirica, Rattus norvegicus, Dipus sagitta, and Allactaga sibirica(less than 25%). The food items of bird and insect mainly contain birds of Alaudidae and insects of Acridiidae, and also include some insects of Pyrrhocoridae, Garabidae, Gicindelidae and Hydrophilidae. The food niche breadth of Corsac fox increased from 0.13 to 0.17 with seasonal change. There is no great significance in diet composition of Corsac fox between spring and summer.
