Abstract:Compared to other countries in terms of per capita GDP, China is 15% percent lower given its level of urbanization, showing symptoms of excessive industrialization, lag in urbanization, and serious distortions between the structure of GDP and that of employment. The causes for that are the practices of anti-urbanization policies since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, particularly since the 1960s. However, the notion for the crucial impacts of urbanization on China’s economy and social development has not been thoroughly understood, even after the year 1978 when China began to adopt the reform and opening-up policy. The strategies, frameworks and policies of Chinese urbanization are mixture of hesitation and resistant forces. Economic and social problems, such as the urban-rural gap, are due largely to the urbanization lag. In a word, the lag in urbanization since 1978 is the major factor for various problematic issues in China’s economic and social development.
