Abstract:Virtual reconstruction of cultural heritage is not only the basis but also one of important contents of its digitized research. The techniques of interactive texture reconstruction researched in this article are of great significance to heighten the effect of virtual reconstruction of cultural heritage. Firstly, interactive and precise texture mapping is aiming at establishing the relationship between texture images and 3D models by appointed corresponding points interactively. The process is based on the traditional camera calibration. For a camera with known intrinsic parameters, three pair of corresponding points will be used to calculate the initial value of extrinsic parameters, and more corresponding points will be used to refine the result. For a camera with unknown intrinsic parameters, an implicit projection matrix will be calculated directly. Secondly, a fast occlusion culling method will be used to remove hidden triangle from texture mapping. At last, a natural neighbor interpolation method will be used to minimize the texture mapping error caused by lens distortion of the camera and the error of 3D scanner.

Abstract:In this paper, we survey several 3D techniques including 3D reconstruction in which quick stereo-photogrammetric system and laser scanner involved, image-based rendering and shape modeling for protection of cultural heritage. The applications are classified into two categories: reconstruction of large-scale heritage sites; reconstruction of culture relics and exhibition. Dozens of successful cases prove the effectiveness of the technologies, and the challenges remain in several fields: the automation of extracting texture from high-resolution photo and mapping it to the 3D model needs to be improved; accelerating the rendering performance; effective integration of virtual reality technology.

Abstract:Digitization technologies play more and more important role in relic protection now. This article summarizes the current status of digitization technology application in relic protection. Combined with work achieved in the digitization protection, restoration and development of Dunhuang Cave in recent years, the application of digitization technology in the relic protection fields such as information acquisition, display, mural copy and intelligent pattern creation of Dunhuang style is introduced. Artificial intelligence and multi-media technology was combined with arts; many techniques were developed to resolve the problems and achieved excellent results. At the end of the article, a conclusion about achievement and experience of digitization relic protection is drawn and some possible future directions are also suggested.

Abstract:Cultural Heritage reflects the human production, life style and environmental conditions of various historical periods. It exists as one of the major national carriers of national history and culture. In order to do better protection and utilization for these cultural heritages, a system of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and statistical measurement is proposed in this paper. The system solves the problems of cultural heritage's data storage, measurement and analysis. Firstly, for the high precision modeling and measurement problems, range data registration and integration algorithm used to achieve high precision 3D reconstruction. Secondly, multi-view stereo reconstruction method is used to solve the problem of rapid reconstruction by procedures such as the original image data pre-processing, camera calibration, point cloud modeling. At last, the artifacts' measure underlying database is established by calculating the measurements of the 3D model's surface. These measurements contain Euclidean distance between the points on the surface, geodesic distance between the points, normal and curvature in each point, superficial area of a region, volume of model's part and some other measurements. These measurements provide a basis for carrying out information mining of cultural heritage. The system has been applied to the applications of 3D modeling, data measurement of the Terracotta Warriors relics, Tibetan architecture and some other relics.
A Novel Approach to 3D Reconstruction Technology of Small Cultural Relics Based on Spatial Coded Texture Image Projection

Abstract:It has become a global trend to combine information technology with the protection, research, inheritance of cultural relics utilizing computers, networks, software, which can provide supporting technologies and tools. Towards the key problem of 3D digitization of cultural relics in digital museum construction, a 3D reconstruction technology of small cultural relics based on spatial coded texture image projection is proposed. Firstly, a colorful texture spatial coded picture is designed based on the pseudo-random M-array whose window is unique. Secondly, a decoding algorithm based on color transfer technology is proposed to realize the decoding and accurate positioning of spatial coding. Finally, use the multi-view images after pixel coordinates positioning to directly obtain the corresponding points, and the 3D reconstruction of small cultural relics is realized. The experimental results show that the 3D reconstruction accuracy of the proposed method reaches 0.1488mm, which can better solve the problems encountered in the 3D reconstruction of small cultural relics.

Abstract:Abstract. Three-dimensional measurement and reconstruction during conservation and restoration of cultural relics have become an essential part of a modem museum regular work. Although many kinds of methods including laser scanning, computer vision and close-range photogrammetry have been put forward, but problems still exist, such as contradiction between cost and good result, time and fine effect. Aimed at these problems, this paper proposed a structure-light based method for 3D measurement and reconstruction of cultural relics in museums. Firstly, based on structure-light principle, digitalization hardware has been built and with its help, dense point cloud of cultural relics' surface can be easily acquired. To produce accurate 3D geometry model from point cloud data, multi processing algorithms have been developed and corresponding software has been implemented whose functions include blunder detection and removal, point cloud alignment and merge, 3D mesh construction and simplification. Finally, high-resolution images are captured and the alignment of these images and 3D geometry model is conducted and realistic, accurate 3D model is constructed. Based on such method, a complete system including hardware and software are built. Multi-kinds of cultural relics have been used to test this method and results prove its own feature such as high efficiency, high accuracy, easy operation and so on.

Abstract:In order to make a triangle mesh model and texture mapping of cultural relics,a three dimensional laser scanner,InSpeck 3D-DF,is employed to collect the geometric data of the relics;then the three dimension modulization tool is used to process the obtained results for establishing the model;and finally the relationship between the established model and the texture mapping of the different images is analyzed.Different texture points which are corresponded to the different parts of the model are synthesized,resulting in the better texture mapping effect for the cultural relics.

Abstract:The digital design of cultural heritage provides a new method for the protection, inheritance and utilization of cultural heritage. Based on the digital design theory and method of Cultural Heritage, study the key technology of three-dimensional digital design for cultural heritage, a three-dimensional digital reconstruction method of cultural relics is constructed by computer aid, and proposed the idea of three-dimensional mesh texture mapping for two-dimensional image calibration, by the three-dimensional digitization experiment of the Bronze Bovine from late " Shang" dynasty, construct the process framework of cultural digital design completely, and the digital design theory and methods of cultural relics are verified.

Abstract:A large number of Song Dynasty artifacts and decoration images in Song tombs unearthed in Sichuan area are rich in content, unique in shape, and ingenious in composition. They are an important part of the history of ancient Chinese art and an important physical example for the study of ancient Chinese history. This article aims to use modern computer science and technology such as 3D modeling to store unearthed cultural relics and their exquisite images, restore artifacts, realize the matching of plane photos and 3D models, and visually present the overall appearance of the relics, thereby providing more abundant materials to promote archeology for the public and museum exhibitions.

Abstract:Terracotta warrior and horses of the Qin Dynasty is an outstanding representative work in Chinese ancient arts and cultures. It is urgent to well protect this world culture heritage by an easy, reliable and advanced technique. Digitalization is an intersecting technique of advanced digitizing and information processing with archaeological and culture relies. It can realize the reappearance, protection and replication of the culture relics, especially the digital reappearing and rebuilding a 3-D digital museum of the archaeological settings. Aiming at the specialty of terracotta warrior, we made a 3-D model of a sole shooting squat terracotta warrior by using of 3-D digitizing processing techniques. This paper specifically describes the 3-D digitizing acquisition and processing techniques, analyses the 3-D digitizing, 3-D modeling, the key problems in the cause of doing texture mapping, and provides the settlement and approves the reliability and feasibility of modeling, texture mapping by results.

Abstract:Preserving humanity's cultural legacy requires the repair of cultural treasures. Virtual reality (VR), which offers realistic representations and immersive experiences, has become a viable instrument for the restoration of cultural treasures as a result of technological advancements. This research explores the use of sophisticated 3D modelling, rendering, and simplification techniques to digitalize cultural artefacts. The study employs a carefully selected set of 3D models from the publicly available Sketchfab website to examine objects that are representative of cultural heritage, such as the Ashoka Tower, the Tibetan Sacred Props, and the Haihun Marquis Mausoleum. The primary objective is to evaluate how well different rendering algorithms capture and preserve the fine features of these cultural treasures while maximizing computing efficiency. To improve the produced models' visual integrity, the research starts by examining the fundamentals and uses of texture mapping, lighting models, and material attributes. A comparison examination of the original and simplified models is then carried out to assess the trade-offs between rendering time and visual quality in terms of performance. In weighing computing resources against preservation goals, this comparison offers crucial insight on the viability of simplification strategies. The findings highlight how important it is to utilise digital tools to preserve, analyze, and share cultural assets. Through the demonstration of the capabilities of cutting-edge 3D modelling and rendering techniques for capturing and spreading the rich historical and cultural importance embodied by artefacts from many traditions and civilizations, this study adds to the growing area of digital cultural preservation. This study contributes to the continuing conversation about utilising technology in the digital age to protect and promote cultural heritage.

Abstract:3D reconstruction, refers to capturing and reproducing the shape and appearance of an arbitrary object or scene given depth and color information. This is a broad research area within the computer vision field involving many stages and still open problems. The digital preservation of cultural heritage is a specially challenging application of 3D reconstruction. Cultural heritage objects and sites greatly differ from each other and a maximized fidelity of the 3D reconstruction is a core requirement. The literature on this topic has substantially increased in the past years, mostly due to the variety of scenarios and the development of new depth sensing devices as well as techniques able to deal with this issue. In our search to develop a complete 3D reconstruction pipeline, we have comprehensively studied techniques related to this topic and divided the 3D digitization process in four major overviews: image acquisition, view registration, mesh integration and texture generation. We present the state-of-the-art approaches and challenges of each stage.

Abstract:3D digitizing technology has a variety of applications including reverse engineering, quality control, virtual reality and digital heritage. Recently, great development in 3D digitizing technology facilitates archaeology and digital preservation of cultural heritage. In this paper, we introduce a 3D digitizing pipeline for cultural heritage. By using 3D technology, both geometry and texture can be recovered with high precision. Four main applications including digital archiving, 3D line drawing, virtual restoration and virtual display are introduced. The technology has been successfully implemented in many digital heritage projects such as Longmen, Xiangtangshan, Maijishan, Nanyuewang museum and so on. These projects demonstrate that 3D digitization greatly facilitates archeology and plays an important role in cultural heritage protection.

Abstract:The 3D digitalization of Chinese Ancient Architecture（CAA） is an important application scene of 3D reconstruction and 3D modeling techniques. It is also the basic work of the digital protection, virtual simulation, digital entertainment development and other applications for CAA. With the rapid development of the surveying and mapping technology and geometric data processing technology in recent years, the research on 3D digitalization of CAA has been widely concerned by scholars. In view of the large volume, multiple components and complex structure of a single 3D CAA shape, a series of achievements have been made by researchers. This survey summarized the types and characteristics of 3D CAA shapes, and the different requirements from the academic and industry areas; reviewed 3D visualization methods and theoretical basis for CAA. By comparing the different researches and application scenarios of varies techniques, we discussed the potential possible research directions, and provided reference for theoretical and application researches of digital protection for CAA.

Abstract:This paper presents a new method to obtain three-dimensional(3D) highly detailed documentation of cultural relics. The thousand-hand bodhisattva was scanned by an articulated arm scanner and was recorded using a high-resolution camera. The information was used to construct a 3D model that reflects completely the current condition,thereby providing an aid for on-site conservation. First,the cultural relics can be scanned precisely using the articulated arm scanner and,based on the high accuracy geometric data,a detailed 3D model can be made.Then some points are selected for high-resolution image scanning. The 3D data and detailed modeling can provide useful information for statistic studies,virtual restoration and long-term monitoring. The data also provides scientific information for on-site conservation. The application of this method on Dazu Thousand-hand Bodhisattva is discussed in detail. The method was shown to be feasible and efficient,providing a good example for 3D documentation of other relics.

Abstract:3D reconstruction of culture artifacts has great potential in digital heritage documentation and protection. Choosing the proper images for texture mapping from multi-view images is a major challenge for high precision and high quality 3D reconstruction of culture artifacts. In this study, a texture selection approach, considering both the geometry and radiation quality for 3D reconstruction of cultural artifacts while using multi-view dense matching is proposed. First, a Markov random field (MRF) method is presented to select images from the best angle of view among texture image sets. Then, an image radiation quality evaluation model is proposed in the virtue of a multiscale Tenengrad definition and brightness detection to eliminate fuzzy and overexposed textures. Finally, the selected textures are mapped to the 3D model under the mapping parameters of the multi-view dense matching and a semi-automatic texture mapping is executed on the 3DMax MudBox platform. Experimental results with two typical cultural artifacts data sets (bronze wares and porcelain) show that the proposed method can reduce abnormal exposure or fuzzy images to yield high quality 3D model of cultural artifacts.

Abstract:Recently different types 3D data of many cultural heritage are collected, however, how to store and manage these data problem. This paper presents a new solution regarding cultural 3D information fine reconstruction and data management based on 3D modeling. These data were stored with the file system and database, which improved the efficiency of data retrieval; on this basis, hyper-fine 3D models of cultural relics were established. Fine 3D information model based on this method can be used for 3D statistics, virtual restoration and change detection, etc. It can provide a scientific basis for the field of conservation and restoration of cultural relics, but can also provide a reference for fine 3D reconstruction to be applied to other cultural relics. Finally, the Dazu Thousand-hand Bodhisattva has been taken as an example, which verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the program.
