Abstract:<jats:p xml:lang="zh">城市作为生命体的基本属性以及历时性特征,决定了城市总是在不断演变发展中,城市设计的本质就是展示这一演变过程,揭示这一演变规律,描绘这一演变路径和图景,因此,城市设计本身就具有与历史城市保护的“一体两面”属性,以及与城市更新的学理内核一致性。城市更新是城市的固有规律和必然过程,中国城市的更新本质是不断追求的现代化和城市现代性彰显,并在这一过程中留存历史记忆,实现历史文化的保护传承。正是基于对城市设计学科发展的长期深刻认识,以及从1999年开始的城市设计教学探索和积累,清华大学教学团队继承了清华大学城市设计与历史城市保护高度融合的学术思想和学术传统,依托北京城在名城保护和首都建设的国家战略性需求,从既有建成空间的形态秩序梳理和空间整合视角,运用城市形态学理论方法,系统培养学生对纷繁复杂的城市空间进行抽象、呈现、认识、建构能力,建立贯穿“建筑—建筑群—场地—城市”的跨尺度一体化思考,并培养学生聚焦关键问题进行辩证思考的连续性设计思维方式。</jats:p>

Abstract:Collective memory in cities reflects urban spatial alterations and historic developments. Collective memory can be preserved and reflected by revitalization projects. To build a framework and compare different patterns of collective memory, this study utilized a comprehensive methodology, comprising comparison research, investigations, and literature research. The framework includes institutions and the tangible intangible features of cultural heritages. To clearly articulate its framework and the relevant issues of collective memory, the article selects Columbia Circle in Shanghai and the Blue House Cluster in Hong Kong as typical cases, comparing their revitalizations and preservations of collective memory. This comparison offers a new and holistic perspective for analyzing the relationship between institutions and the revitalizations of urban heritage, for how heritage can be adapted to suitable modern uses and relevant cultural events, and for how collective memory can be preserved through revitalization.

Abstract:Each city has its special city memory.However, in the process of urban conversion and renewal,these spaces with city memory have been lest because of com- plete transformation.The destruction and loss of city memory makes the city unfamiliar to the people.In order to comfort people's troubled hearts,to protect those precious city memories,to continue city context under the general trend of developmant.This uses the examples of Guangzhou and Shenzhen,which refer to the“landscape unit”method de- veloped by a famous Japanese planner and designer.This method is based on the spatial evolution analysis of city history and trends to use a quantitative approach to resolve the issues between urban construction and protection.

It also discusses the restructuring and reinforcement for the continued use,which is replaced the original brick-wood structure by reinforced concrete frame structure. Abstract:The Auditorium of Tsinghua University,built in 1917,is a major historical and cultural site protected at the national level.Before Tsinghua's centennial anniversary in 2011,the auditorium had been comprehensively reinforced and repaired which aims to make up the defects and deficiencies of the original design and bring overall optimization through reinforcing the structure,replacing deteriorated features,enhancing enjoyment of the performance,adjusting acoustic environment,utilizing the underground space,exhibiting the historical heritage,improving the outdoor environment,etc.Meanwhile,the strengthening and reconstruction work tried to maintain the auditorium's original appearance and make the historical building adapt to modern functions and multiple activities' demands from faculty and students.

Abstract:This research paper sketches qualitative dialogue regarding a topic of radical renovation caused from the Westernization process in Singapore Chinatown. Singapore"s urban policy in preserving its historic districts was implemented in the context of a fast-expanding economy and rapid urban development under westernization and globalization toward developed western countries. However, the authorities did not pay attention to the needs of traditional conservation in Chinatown. Even though Singapore’s Chinatown benefited in part from its modernized and westernized appearance, the stories of the shophouses and Majesty Theatre show that the regional policy has not succeeded in retaining the traditional and historical activities which were reflective of the authentic local community life. After several decades of demolition and rebuilding, there is now a cautious and keen governmental interest in conserving areas of historic-ethnic Singapore. There is nowhere that better represents and manifests the history of Singaporean and Chinese culture than in Singapore’s Chinatown. In particular, the governing authorities have radically redeveloped and globalized Chinatown in Singapore with Western standards based on modernization and globalization. However, the regional history is a society’s memory of its past. Thus, when structures and districts have excellent historic properties, they should be managed and conserved in a proper way. Furthermore, to advocate for the preservation of slums and decrepit shophouse buildings because of romantic sentiments is undoubtedly required for improving their future, and does not constitute an unrealistic and undesirable aim. Buildings and ways of life should be preserved because they have certain benefits to society as a whole.

Abstract:Memory Studies, Volume 17, Issue 3, Page 581-598, June 2024. In memory studies, museums and memorials have been actively employed in constructing and reinterpreting the social memories of nation-states and sub-groups within national populations. As such, scholarly debates have often focused on the roles of social and political elites in creating national remembrance. This article provides an alternative theoretical and empirical lens that focuses on China's local memory practices and initiatives within the context of private museums and their dynamic interaction with the state. It examines how grassroots communities in Yan'an use private museum space to commemorate, interpret and negotiate local histories promoted by political elites. While local governments actively promote official sites of memory in Yan'an as the roots of Chinese communism for patriotic education, the private museum offers an alternative form of public space for social gatherings and memory transmission. Instead of promoting a grand narrative of the founding of the nation, the private museum focuses on local folk culture and the representation of the everyday landscape in response to rapid social change. Such forms of local commemoration are not driven by radical social movements that challenge the dominant historical narrative of ruling elites. Instead, they provide spaces for local communities to safely negotiate, communicate and sometimes compromise within and through official constraints. The findings contribute to our understanding of memory politics and its roles in shaping the state-society relationships of modern China.

Spatial reconstruction and cultural practice of the regeneration of historic blocks in the process of urbanization: A case study of Guangzhou

Abstract:: During the process of urban construction in the new era, the Chinese government advocates for the development of beautiful towns and cities with historic memories and cultural context. The renewal and development of historic blocks, which are the carrier of local history and culture, is a vital part of implementing the new urbanization strategy. Based on Foucault's and Harvey's theories of the production of space, this research analyzed the process of spatial reconstruction and subjects' cultural practice of Yongqing Fang, Guangzhou City. We found that culture was a crucial factor for the smooth transformation of Yongqing Fang. With the efforts of the residents with cultural identity and other social agents, the cultural value was officially recognized and protected. Hence, the renewal of Yonqing Fang could be gradually carried out under the framework of cultural protection. After the renewal, Yongqing Fang was transformed from a living space to a cultural consumption space, where cultural production and consumption showed a high degree of commercialization. The local culture was mixed with exotic culture, resulting in low satisfaction of tourists' cultural experience. The case of Yongqing Fang highlights culture as an active factor that directly plays a role in the multi-subject spatial production of historic districts, which enriches the theory of spatial production from the perspective of culture. This case is of reference for the implementation of the new urbanization strategy. In the process of urbanization, we should build towns and cities with locally historic and cultural characteristics.

Abstract:Abstract With the spatial culture theory as the basis and from the perspective of cultural heritage, this paper elucidates the construction of the Liu Xiao Ling Tong Book Pavilion of Yunnan Normal University (which may also be interpreted as a Traditional Culture Commons), introduces modern library concepts such as ‘celebrity charm’, featured resources and space reconstruction, as well as provides enlightenment to the library cycle with Chinese wisdom and experience. This paper applies participant observation method, interviewing method and textual analysis method with the data collection period from September 2015 to December 2016. Through library space reconstruction and the inheritance of certain outstanding features of Chinese culture, the Liu Xiao Ling Tong Book Pavilion has had an influence among university faculty and students, the university library circle in China and even the entire education circle, while also complemented and improved the applicability of the spatial culture theory in the library circumstance.

Abstract:With the rapid development of globalization and urbanization, the atmosphere of cultural life in the historical and cultural districts of the city has be gun to change. The collective memory of the block is gradually missing, and the local crisis of homogenization appears. Therefore, the Beiyuanmen block was selected as a typical case, using spatial syntax and in-depth interviews to empirically study the collective memory of residents. It is found that the col lective memory space of Beiyuanmen block has the following changing trends: the collective memory space structure level of the block continues as a whole, and the alley space that carries the residents’ unconscious habitual memory is facing varying degrees of destruction; the scope and intensity of collective memory space are consistent with the direction of urban development, and the overall collective memory center tends to shift westward; the elements of collective memory space have changed obviously, from being dominated by a single re ligious building function in the old period to a coexistence pattern of reli gious buildings and public facilities in the new period. Based on the above analysis, it is considered that the collective memory space in historical and cultura l blocks is the result of the transformation of residents’ values and ethnic interaction.

Abstract:In recent years,various historical and cultural city,its history of traditional neighborhoods have scale protection and transformation,this activity has become so rampant in our country.Carrying the memory of a city historic district,culture and folk customs,is a tiny window of modern city life with traditional urban life dialogue,we should focus on treatment.The width of the alley historic district of Chengdu transformation surface looks bright and colorful,from the professional point of view,I believe that the missing component of the renovation project is so large.This article focuses on the architecture phenomenology and humane care of the spirit of place theory to discuss the gain and loss of Chengdu,covering the width of the alley building characteristics,spatial characteristics and workplace characteristics.
