Abstract:Abstract This research focuses on the renovation of historical buildings of Zhuyangxin Plaster Store, Hangzhou, China. By following three architectural design strategies, namely protecting the surrounding environment, rejuvenating the commercial and cultural function and recovering the original appearance, the historical buildings are to be retrofitted to achieve a sustainable regeneration. Meanwhile, based on an on-site investigation into the present residential environment of the buildings, suitable architectural technologies to improve the residential environment are analyzed from the aspects of envelop, facilities, sun shading, passive technology and sunlight utilization. After some retrofit measures were adopted for the envelop of the historical buildings, the simulation results showed that not only the thermal and light environment will be improved, but also energy efficiency of 50.34% can be achieved according to the standard in China.

Abstract:Through an analysis of Hangzhou's Jinghang Grand Canal riverside industrial land uses this paper emphasizes the importance of maintaining the relationship of people with the land with the continuity of local culture.The renovation model for riverside industrial land is discussed and an interactive function conglom-eration model is proposed.The conglomeration model identifies the growth point for renovation that retains sustainable functions and maintains both old and new building ratios.An effective functional cycle that considers both functional and location needs is formed to push the area toward positive development.

Abstract:In the increasingly warming wave of renovation and reconstruction in old cities,exploring models which can balance various contradictions is the chief problem in the redevelopment of old cities in China.However,there is no general model.Taking Hangzhou Quanye Li as an example,this article explores the methods and processes meeting with the Chinese current situation.Based on the site survey,the project analyzes the development mode,planning method,and architecture designing ideas of the construction and renovation in Quanye Li old residential area from the angles of sociology and typology.Finally,it suggests to exploiting apartments for the elderly and residential districts for both oldsters and youngsters,as well as continuing traditional settlement texture and keeping live traditional spatial sense in the planning and architecture design.

Abstract:Abstract This paper is devoted to the study of industrial heritage landscape reconstruction from the perspective of cultural memory. Taking the industrial landscape reconstruction design of Baoji Shenxin Yarn Factory as an example, the historical value will be excavated and extended in all directions. Combining the traditional concept of industrial heritage, historical and cultural status, site composition and development trend, the stage industrial heritage will be presented. The problems existing in the landscape renovation, and systematic analysis, elaboration and summary of the overall environmental characteristics of Shenxin Yarn Factory. This research combines the heritage itself with landscape planning and design, comprehensively utilizes the advantages of industrial heritage resources in combination with the design principles of protection, harmony and utilization, and combines with the development of sustainable tourism to protect the construction and art of China’s industry and achieve industrialization. The value of the heritage is maximized, and the trinity of heritage landscape, economy and environment is coordinated towards the diversification of ecological, functional, practical, economic, cultural and aesthetic.

Abstract:Industrial heritage is critical representation of the industrial civilization. It carries the memory of the modernization process of the city, and provides precious foundations for city renewal and brand building. The transform of industrial structure and the rising awareness of heritage protection make the waterfront docks, garages, and old factories become important industrial heritages. Based on a review of industrial heritage and the spirit of the city, this study uses the industrial heritage area on the west side of Gongchen Bridge, Hangzhou,which adopts the museum approach and builtds Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museums, as a case study. It firstly examines the development model and initiatives undertaken by the management team, including the holistic protection model, positioning on the mass audience, live presentation approach, initiative management, and adopting of digital techniques. This study suggests a dual-layer model, including a basic element layer and a supporting element layer, referring to industrial heritage protection and prolonging the spirit of the city in this case. Through in-depth interviews from a view of a city wanderer, this study further assesses different stakeholders' attitudes towards the museums' practice in protecting and transferring the industrial heritages. In this case, the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage takes a comprehensive form which integrates partial functions of traditional museum, creativity industry park and leisure tourism place together instead of a single so-called reuse model. Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museums own its unique lead, innovation and brand, which is bound up with external factors including Hangzhou's urban renewal concept, leisure tourism environment, cultural industries cultivation, internationalization, etc., and internal factors brought by the Grand Canal(Hangzhou Section) Comprehensive Protection Project. Therefore, empirical model related to this case could be only provided as a reference and comparison, and more effective ways would be found if combined with the trend of urban organic renewal, heritage authenticity protection, industrial chain extension, and human emotional appeal.

Abstract:Green building is a hot topic today. The place making and urban cultures are also important issues in postindustrial society. The industrial heritage renovation projects provide a research opportunity in combination with both aspects. This paper tries to shed new light on this issue by interdisciplinary methods, to study six Guangzhou industrial heritage renovation projects, giving aesthetic values for six sites concerning place making and culture creation, especially giving an explanation for old building material's aesthetic performance in terms of concepts "entropy" and "archetype." The conclutions regard: the six places are brand spaces of "authentic Guangzhou" that make local experiential knowledge, emotional significance and creative communities in combination with historical and cultural narratives.

Abstract:Chongqing Industrial Museum was proposed to set up on the original site of section steel plant of the former Chongqing Iron and Steel Works in order to lengthen the lifeline of a history of 120 years.To solve the contradictions among the protection & reuse of industrial heritages , the newly built creative industrial park , commercial mating facilities , as well as the single space and new city with complex functions in the traditional industrial area , an integral and multivariate cultural and industrial expo area would be created by combining old industrial park with new downtown area , through retaining most of the industrial heritages to create the indicative and vivid landscapes .Thus a new life and energy would be given to the whole area by way of a series of guided developments and reforms , as well as accomplishing its role conversion .

Abstract:Each city has its special city memory.However, in the process of urban conversion and renewal,these spaces with city memory have been lest because of com- plete transformation.The destruction and loss of city memory makes the city unfamiliar to the people.In order to comfort people's troubled hearts,to protect those precious city memories,to continue city context under the general trend of developmant.This uses the examples of Guangzhou and Shenzhen,which refer to the“landscape unit”method de- veloped by a famous Japanese planner and designer.This method is based on the spatial evolution analysis of city history and trends to use a quantitative approach to resolve the issues between urban construction and protection.

Abstract:The renewal of urban industrial heritage brings many benefits, meanwhile facing challenges, and there is a lack of in-depth and specific case study analysis. Based on spatial production theory, this paper takes an iconic project as an example to explore its construction process and reveal the spatial and social changes it triggers. This case study investigates the changes in physical and social spaces resulting from the shift in the subjects of spatial production. By analyzing document data, spatial data, and field data, the following key findings and conclusions are obtained: 1) Capital led the regeneration process, transformed decaying factory buildings into consumer space, and activated the economic vitality of the area. 2) The construction of the physical space changed the spatial layout, structure and function that attracted the creative community and young visitors, changing daily lives of the space users. 3) However, the neglect of industrial culture and participation of nearby residents are obvious challenges. The results indicate that using spatial production as a theoretical analysis framework helps us fully understand the challenges faced in the renewal of urban industrial heritage projects. This study can provide a reference for small-scale urban heritage renewal projects, facilitating accurate decision-making.

Urban Conservation Through Chinese Local Original Architecture: The Preservation and Renovation of Zhongshan Road in Hangzhou

Abstract:How to realise the goal of city revival through the preservation of historic districts is an important issue for all historic cities. This article introduces the Preservation and Renovation Project of Zhongshan Road in Hangzhou regarding its guiding principles, design concepts, and the entire construction process. In this project, the existing historical buildings along Zhongshan Road were preserved by keeping the remains of different historical periods and various lifestyles of the inhabitants. Rather than merely refurbishing the street front only, we reconstructed the Southern Song Dynasty city-block walls along Zhongshan Road and restored the Fangxiang city fabric to create the streetscape of the former Imperial Avenue. Afforested terraced teahouses were built along the road, and the original water system was restored so as to realise the atmosphere of ‘watertown’. New buildings were added by adopting local materials and vernacular building forms. The article summarises two strategies for the preservation of a historic district in a large city. One is the comprehensive project planning by research and investigation. The other is the overall design guideline for the street blocks. It also reflects on the disappointing aspects that mainly resulted from time limitations and the poor taste in the refurbishment of shop houses.

Abstract:In the evolving landscape of urban development, the conservation and renewal of historical cultural districts play a crucial role in enhancing urban resilience. This paper focuses on the Congshanfang renewal project in Zhongshan City, analyzing the integration of urban resilience theory into historical district conservation to achieve sustainable urban development. By examining the comprehensive approach of the Congshanfang project, which includes architectural conservation, economic revitalization, and social structure enhancement, this study highlights the multifaceted aspects of urban resilience: infrastructural, institutional, economic, and social. The research underscores the importance of protecting not just the physical structures but also revitalizing the social and economic fabrics of historical districts. The study employs a qualitative assessment over a historical timeline to evaluate the impact of conservation efforts on urban resilience. Findings suggest that such integrated approaches not only preserve the cultural heritage but also contribute to the district's adaptability and sustainability. Furthermore, this paper calls for continued exploration and innovation in enhancing urban resilience, particularly through community participation in placemaking and protection techniques for historic buildings. The Congshanfang project serves as a model for other historical cultural districts, offering insights into the dynamic balance between conservation, adaptation, and revitalization within the framework of urban resilience.

Abstract:With the deceleration of urban expansion, the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage buildings has emerged as a novel area of research. In previous times, the majority of approaches to adapting industrial heritage buildings relied on experiential knowledge, which lacked the ability to objectively assess the relationship between spaces and engage in rational planning. However, the social network analysis method offers an objective and comprehensive means of perceiving the spatial structure and analyzing its issues from a detached perspective. This study presents a proposal for addressing three spatial challenges encountered during the conversion of industrial heritage buildings into public buildings. It also suggests spatial optimization strategies to overcome these challenges. The Sanlinqiao Thermal Bottle Factory is selected as the research subject, and a spatial network structure model is constructed to analyze the existing issues using the social network analysis method. The proposed spatial optimization strategies are then applied, and the optimized space is evaluated through a re-analysis of the spatial layout. The spatial utilization rate has been significantly improved, leading to an effective enhancement of the spatial vitality of the site. This study presents a spatial strategy aimed at converting industrial heritage buildings into public buildings, thereby offering valuable insights for similar projects involving the transformation of industrial heritage sites.

Abstract:Statement of the problem. To solve the problem of shortage of land resources in the territory of modern cities, a promising direction is the redevelopment of derelict manufacturing plants, including the reuse of unexploited industrial buildings for cultural and commercial purposes. The main task of the Changchun Vanke Blue Mountain project (Jilin Province, China) presented in this article was to maximize the preservation of cultural heritage and the unique atmosphere of the industrial zone while creating an entertainment park. Results. The article describes the technical solutions that made it possible to implement this concept as part of the buildings’ reconstruction of the gear wheel manufacturer and the stamping shop with the technical office. Not only the preservation of ruins was implemented, but also the maximum possible rehabilitation of buildings using original building materials, along with the addition of new annexes built in a modern style. The features of the main street design with an emphasis on the architectural components of reconstructed buildings are provided. Conclusions. The implementation of the Changchun Vanke Blue Mountain project made it possible to popularize the history of the former plant, to show its crucial role in the formation of the city. At the same time, it was possible to create original architectural solutions using modern methods of architectural reconstruction of industrial facilities.

Abstract:With the advent of the post-industrial era, China’s traditional industrial industry has gradually declined or transformed, leaving a large number of industrial buildings abandoned and idle. A majority of these existing industrial building heritages were built with original facade design, which cannot meet the requirements of the time and no longer fits into the new urban interface. From the perspective of language relationship in architecture, building skin and building space are two vital interdependent elements, and the study of building materials as a carrier has a significant impetus to the exploration of building skin. Therefore, the external wall material has naturally become an important factor directly related to the design and performance of the renovation of the industrial building heritages. Its performance and form largely influence or determine the possible ways and means of the transformation of the heritage facades. How should material performance be used to preserve the historical imprint of industrial heritage while conforming to contemporary aesthetics? What are the rules of material performance in the renovation of industrial buildings? These are the issues that needs to be considered and studied in the transformation of industrial building heritage.This paper studies the exterior wall materials and structures in the renovation of industrial building heritage facades, and uses reconstruction theory as a methodology to sort out effective strategies and methods for the material performance of industrial building heritage facade renovation. First it summarizes and elaborates the classification and performance characteristics of the materials of heritage facades as well as the principles and methods of facades transformation. Later it focuses on the practice and development of the renovation of facades in China’s industrial building heritages, taking the reform practice of Nanjing Hutchison Factory as an example. Combing the analysis and summary of the practical project with the theory, this paper helps improve the theoretical system of architectural skin materials within the scope of architectural design theory, summarizes the design concepts consistent with the current view, and conclude the corresponding architectural skin design strategy and methods.
