Abstract:Abstrcat The Lewis base property of Al_2O_3 has been studied quantitatively with an infrared spectroscopic approach by using boric acid trimethyl ester (BATE) as the probe molecule. The adsorption of BATE by Al_2O_3 makes the 1360cm-1 absorb peak of BATE didived into two absorb peaks (1409cm-1 and 1287cm-1) and the 1036cm-1 absorb peak shifted to 1067cm-1. Under low pressure the height of the absorb peaks is direct proportion to the pressure of BATE and to the Al_2O_3 content. The results showed that there is certain strength of Lewis base with Al_2O_3 and the adsorption of BATE by Al_2O_3 is monomolecular chemical adsorption.

Abstract:The FTIR spectra of the ternary Li2S-B2O3-LiBr oxysulfide glasses have been recorded. Assignment of main bands obtained in the spectra indicates the formation of so-called semi-thio-tetraborate groups and transformation to semi-thio-diborate groups with increasing Li2S content.

Abstract:Surface basicity of alumina and modified alumina has been studied by FT-IR spectroscopy using boric acid trimethyl ester (BATE) as the probe molecule. The surface basic sites on alumina can be probed by the adsorption of BATE and coadsorption of BATE and CO2. BATE is found to interact with both types of basic sites on alumina: basic hydroxyls and surface oxygen anions. A general interaction model of BATE with basic sites on metal oxide is proposed.

Abstract:The infrared spectra of the species derived from dicarbonyl(η5-cyclopentadienyl)iron(0) {[CpFe(CO)2]2 (Cp = η5-C5H5)} which are supported on the surfaces of acidic, neutral, and basic alumina (Al2O3) have been measured. The structures and stabilities of these supported organometallic species depend markedly on the acid-base properties of the alumina surfaces.

Abstract:The surface acidity and hydroxyl vibrations of the pillared clay molecular sieve containing mixed metal complexes were determined by IR spectra. The results suggest that (1) the clay and pillared clays have more Lewis acid sites than Bronsted acid sites; (2) their surface acidity is varied with the pillaring agents and comes from their pillars, which can be transfered into oxides and release protons and produce Bronsted and Lewis acid sites after calcination; (3) the hydroxyl groups (3500-3700 cmMIN1) are originated mainly from the aluminum located on the octahedral skeleton and their intensities decrease with the increase in temperature; (4) the stability of the pillars in the pillared clays affects their surface hydroxyl groups and Bronsted and Lewis acid sites.

Abstract:The Lewis acidity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted much research interest in recent years. We report here the development of two quantitative methods for determining the Lewis acidity of MOFs-based on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of MOF-bound superoxide (O2•-) and fluorescence spectroscopy of MOF-bound N-methylacridone (NMA)-and a simple strategy that significantly enhances MOF Lewis acidity through ligand perfluorination. Two new perfluorinated MOFs, Zr6-fBDC and Zr6-fBPDC, where H2fBDC is 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid and H2fBPDC is 2,2',3,3',5,5',6,6'-octafluoro-4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, were shown to be significantly more Lewis acidic than nonsubstituted UiO-66 and UiO-67 as well as the nitrated MOFs Zr6-BDC-NO2 and Zr6-BPDC-(NO2)2. Zr6-fBDC was shown to be a highly active single-site solid Lewis acid catalyst for Diels-Alder and arene C-H iodination reactions. Thus, this work establishes the important role of ligand perfluorination in enhancing MOF Lewis acidity and the potential of designing highly Lewis acidic MOFs for fine chemical synthesis.
Surface properties of rare earth oxide solid-base catalysts: I . Characterization of surface active sites of rare earth oxide catalysts

Abstract:The properties of surface acidity-basicity, oxygen mobility and surface hydroxyl of several rare earth oxide catalysts (Y2O3, La2O3, CeO2, Nd2O3) were studied by means of the techniques of IR and TPD-MS. The results show that there are many quite strong basic sites and a few acidic sites oh the surface of rare earth oxides. The strength of strong basic sites is in the order of La2O3>Nd2O3>Y 2O3>CeO2, and the number of strong basic sites is in the order of Y2O3>La2O3>Nd 2O3>CeO2, but the strength of weak basic sites is Nd2O3> ZrO2>Y2O3>CeO2>La 2O3, and the number is Y2O3>ZrO2>La2O 3>CeO2>Nd2O3. There are two acidic sites on Nd2O3, a strong acidic site on Y2O3, a middle acidic site on La2O3, and almost no acidic site on CeO2. There are two acidic sites on ZrO2, one is strong and the other is middle. The TFD peak of oxygen adsorbed on La2O3, Nd2O3, Y2O3 appeared at 395 C , 295 C and 445 C, respectively, which means those rare earth oxides have oxygen mobility and can transmit oxygen when oxygen is present.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has outstanding merits in biochemical molecular analysis, and the development of new SERS substrates is the focus of research. Herein, In 2 O 3 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by a high temperature pyrolysis method with cubic phase and small particle size at 10 nm. The structures and properties of In 2 O 3 NPs were characterized by X–ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and other characterization methods. Additionally, the SERS spectra of In 2 O 3 -MBA with the enhancement factor ( EF ) up to 1.22 × 10 4 is discussed. The results demonstrate that there is a charge transfer (CT) effect revealed between the adsorbed molecules of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) and the substrates of In 2 O 3 NPs, and it could be excited by long wavelength energy. Based on the In 2 O 3 NPs, the study is beneficial to develop more potential semiconductor SERS substrates.

Abstract:Adsorption of boric acid trimethyl ester (BATE) on high-surface-area silica has been studied by FT-IR spectroscopy. It is found that surface hydroxyls remaining after outgassing at high temperatures act as weak basic sites for BATE adsorption. Coordinate interaction of BATE with isolated hydroxyls dominates the adsorption and induces two splitting B–O vibrational bands at 1375 and 1345 cm−1. In addition, a small amount of BATE reacts with hydrogen-bonded hydroxyls and strained oxygen generated after high-temperature dehydroxylation.
Identifying the Isolated Transition Metal Ions/Oxides in Molecular Sieves and on Oxide Supports by UV Resonance Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract:Isolated transition metal ions/oxides in molecular sieves and on surfaces are a class of active sites for selective oxidation of hydrocarbons. Identifying the active sites and their coordination structure is vital to understanding their essential role played in catalysis and designing and synthesizing more active and selective catalysts. The isolated transition metal ions in the framework of molecular sieves (e.g., TS-1, Fe-ZSM-5, and V-MCM-41) or on the surface of oxides (e.g., MoO3/Al2O3 and TiO2/SiO2) were successfully identified by UV resonance Raman spectroscopy. The charge transfer transitions between the transition metal ions and the oxygen anions are excited by a UV laser and consequently the UV resonance Raman effect greatly enhances the Raman signals of the isolated transition metal ions. The local coordination of these ions in the rigid framework of molecular sieves or in the relatively flexible structure on the surface can also be differentiated by the shifts of the resonance Raman bands. The relative concentration of the isolated transition metal ion/oxides could be estimated by the intensity ratio of Raman bands. This study demonstrates that the UV resonance Raman spectroscopy is a general technique that can be widely applied to the in-situ characterization of catalyst synthesis and catalytic reactions.

Abstract:The XPS(X-ray photoelectron spectroscope) measurements of the 80K phase Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-Li-O ceramics were carried out on surfaces obtained by polishing in ultrahigh vacuum. The results show that the chemical bond natures of Bi and Sr almost did not change, but the binding energies of Ca, Cu and O shifted apparently toward higher energy when Li doped in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system. The XPS spectrum of O Is has only singe peak (528.8eV) from clean surfaces polished in vacuum and consists of the OH (531eV) and OL (528.8eV) components from conventionally polished surfaces.

Abstract:The surface behaviors of monolayers of amino-acid-derived Schiff bases, namely, 4-(4-(hexadecyloxy)benzylideneamino)benzoic acid (HBA), at the air-water interface on pure water and ion-containing subphases (Cu2+, Ca2+, and Ba2+) have been clarified by a combination of surface pressure-area isotherms and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique, and the metal coordinations and molecular orientations in the monolayers have been investigated using in Situ infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). The presence of metal ions gives rise to condensation of the monolayers (Cu2+, pH 6.1; Ca2+, pH 11; Ba2+, pH 10), even leading to the formation of three-dimensional Structures of die compressed monolayer in the case of Ba2+ (pH 12). The metal coordinations with the carboxyl groups at the interface depend on the type of metal ions and pH of the aqueous subphase. The orientations of the aromatic Schiff base segments with surface pressure are elaborately described. The spectral behaviors of the Schiff base segments with incidence angle in the case of Ba2+ (pH 12) have so far presented an excellent example for the selection rule of IRRAS at the air-water interface for p-polarization with vibrational transition moments perpendicular to the water surface. The chain orientations in the monolayers arc quantitatively determined on the assumption that the thicknesses of the HBA monolayers at the air-water interface are composed of the sublayers of alkyl chains and Schiff base segments.

Abstract:Raman and infrared spectroscopies have been employed to investigate the xBi2O3–(65−x)Li2O–20ZnO–15B2O3 glasses in order to obtain information about the competitive role of Bi2O3 and B2O3 in the formation of glass network. IR and Raman spectra show that these glasses are made up of [BiO3] pyramidal and [BiO6] octahedral units. The formation of Zn2+ in tetrahedral coordination was observed. The average electronic polarizability of the oxide ion (αO2−), optical basicity (Λ), and Yamashita–Kurosawa's interaction parameter (A) were also examined.

Abstract:The surface chemical properties of CeO2 and Pr6O11 have been investigated with FT-IR spectroscopy. The reactivities of surface hydroxyls were tested through the reaction of CO. Surface formate species are formed on CeO2 and Pr6O11 under CO atmosphere at 200 ��C, and the reaction becomes more prevailing at higher temperatures especially for partially reduced samples. The surface formate species are produced via the reaction of CO with surface hydroxyls which was confirmed by the reaction of CO with D2-treated CeO2 and Pr6O11. The Surface formate can be oxidized to carbonate at temperatures exceeding 300 ��C, and the surface hydroxyls could be recovered as the formate species decompose or are oxidized to carbonate species. The roles played by the surface hydroxyls and surface active sites in the CO oxidation are discussed.
