Abstract:The structtiral unit of network and chemical state of constituent elements for theoxysulfide glasses in the system Li2S-B2O3-LiBr were studied by using X-ray photoelectronspectroscopy.The results indicate that sulfur in the form of S(2-)participates in network for-mation of glasses as coordinated ion and the glasses with R<0.4 have no nonbridging sulfur ions. So,the binding energies(BE)of S2p do not show appreciable change with the variationof modifier Li2S content.However, when R≥0.4,BE of S2p significantly decreases with theaddition of Li2 Sthat is caused by the existence of the nonbridging sulfur ions.The bindingenergy of Li1s in the glasses is found to increase gradually with the increase of LiBr dopantcontent. This implies that LiBr is only dissolved in glass matrix entering the network inter-stitially as dissociated ions,and the Li(-)ions surrounded by Br(-)ions mainly take part in con-duction.

Abstract:Oxysulfide glasses in systems Li2S-B2O3(-LiBr) have been prepared and studied by differential scanning calorimetry and electrical measurement. In particular, the effects of Li2S as a modifier and LiBr as a dopant on glass transition temperature and conductivity of the glasses are studied. The results demonstrate that for the glasses of Li2S-B2O3 system when the Li2S content increases, both the glass transition temperature and activation energy of conduction increase, and reach a maximum in the range 30-33 mol% Li2S. The addition of LiBr decreases the glass transition temperature, but enhances pronouncedly the ionic conductivity of glasses. These results are discussed in reference to variation of the structural entities with the fraction of 4-coordinated borons in the glass.

Abstract:New oxysulphide glasses in system Li2S-SiS2-LiBO2(-LiCl) have been prepared and investigated by using XRD, XPS, DTA and electrical measurement. The oxysulphide glasses are more thermally stable and anti-hygroscopic than sulphide glasses, and are of higher Li+ ion conductivity than those of oxide glasses. Both the glass transition temperature and activation energy increase with the increasing of LiBO2 content, and reach maximums at about 70 mol%. The glass 0.41 (Li2S:SiS2:LiBO2):0.59LiCl has the highest ionic conductivity of 6 X 10(-5)S/cm at room temperature. The relationship between the glass structure and composition, and its effects on the thermal and electrical properties are discussed.

Abstract:Raman and infrared spectroscopies have been employed to investigate the xBi2O3–(65−x)Li2O–20ZnO–15B2O3 glasses in order to obtain information about the competitive role of Bi2O3 and B2O3 in the formation of glass network. IR and Raman spectra show that these glasses are made up of [BiO3] pyramidal and [BiO6] octahedral units. The formation of Zn2+ in tetrahedral coordination was observed. The average electronic polarizability of the oxide ion (αO2−), optical basicity (Λ), and Yamashita–Kurosawa's interaction parameter (A) were also examined.

Abstract:In this work, the optical absorption and ESR spectra of mixed conductive lithium borotungstate glasses are measured. The spin density as well as the weight percent of W6+ ions are calculated. The electronic structure of tungsten ions and the network structure of the glasses are analyzed. It is found that both tungsten ions W5+ and W6+ co-exist in the glasses with Li2O content less than 35 mol% and there are predominately W6+ ion in the glasses with Li2O content >35 mol%. The optical absorption caused by W5+ ions decreases with increasing Li2O content and rapidly increases with increasing WO3 content. The spin density, however, anomalously weakens with increasing WO3 content so as to be zero finally in contrast with the optical properties of the glasses. It follows that the increase of WO3 content must lead to the polymerization of tungsten-oxygen polyhedra and therefore, there must exist two electrons with paired spins in the 5d-state of tungsten ions in the larger tungstate clusters.

Abstract:Lithium vanadium-borate glasses with the composition of 0.3Li2O–(0.7-x)B2O3–xV2O5 (x = 0.3, 0.325, 0.35, 0.375, 0.4, 0.425, 0.45, and 0.475) were prepared by melt-quenching method. According to differential scanning calorimetry data, vanadium oxide acts as both glass former and glass modifier, since the thermal stability of glasses decreases with an increase in V2O5 concentration. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy data show that the vibrations of [VO4] structural units occur at V2O5 concentration of 45 mol%. It is established that the concentration of V4+ ions increases exponentially with the growth of vanadium oxide concentration. Direct and alternative current measurements are carried out to estimate the contribution both electronic and ionic conductivities to the value of total conductivity. It is shown that the electronic conductivity is predominant in the total one. The glass having the composition of 0.3Li2O-0.275B2O3-0.475V2O5 shows the highest electrical conductivity that has the value of 7.4 × 10−5 S cm−1 at room temperature.

Abstract:Melt quenching technique was used for preparing the glass network 10Li2O-30SrO-(60-x)B2O3: xCuO (0 < x < 1, where x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1 mol%). The samples were investigated by analysing spectroscopic and dielectric properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) asserted the glassy nature of the samples. Optical absorption spectra of the specimens displayed a prime band centred nearly at 750 nm due to Cu2+ ions. A continuous increase in the intensity of this band is noticed with a rise in the concentration of CuO. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of the glasses confirmed the existence of Cu2+ ions. Spin-Hamiltonian parameters of the specimens were estimated. An analysis on the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) curves confirmed the bands due to conventional borate units. The dielectric investigations supported the depolymerization of the specimens with an increase in the content of CuO.

Abstract:The local structure and spectroscopic properties of Cu-Sm co-doped Li2B4O7 glass have been studied using XRD, EPR, UV-Vis-NIR absorption and luminescence methods and compared with the corresponding results for Sm-doped and Cu-doped Li2B4O7 glasses. The EPR spectrum reveals an axially-symmetric signal with a characteristic hyperfine structure belonging to Cu2+ ions. The Cu2+/Cutotal ratio was determined. The optical absorption spectrum shows a broad, intense band attributed to Cu2+ ions and several weaker narrow bands attributed to Sm3+ ions. Photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra as well as PL decay kinetics of Sm3+ and Cu+ ions were registered, analyzed, and discussed. The PL spectra show a broad band assigned to the 3d94s1 → 3d10 transition of Cu+ ions and four narrow bands assigned to the 4G5/2 → 6HJ (J = 5/2-11/2) transitions of Sm3+ ions. The observed changes in PL intensity, shortening of the Sm3+ lifetime and prolongation of the Cu+ lifetime were explained by energy transfer from Sm3+ → Cu+ and re-absorption of the Sm3+ emission by Cu2+ ions.

Abstract:We report on the effect of various alkaline-earth metal oxides on the broadband infrared luminescence covering 1000-1600 nm wavelength region from bismuth-doped silicate glasses. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the infrared luminescence and the fluorescent lifetime is more than 200 nm and 400 mu s, respectively. The fluorescent intensity decreases with increasing basicity of host glasses. Besides the broadband infrared luminescence, luminescence centered at 640 nm was also observed, which should be ascribed to Bi2+ rather than to the familiar Bi3+. We suggest that the infrared luminescence should be assigned to the X-2 (2)Pi (3/2) -> X-1 (2)Pi(1/2) transition of BiO molecules dispersed in the host glasses. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The influence of Bi2O3 content on the structure and properties of SBBC glass has been studied. The (65-x)SiO2-xBi2O3-B2O3-CuO (SBBC) glasses were prepared by high temperature melt cooling method. As-prepared glasses were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermal expansion coefficient analyzer (CTE), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Infrared spectrometer (IR) and Raman spectrometer (Raman). The results show that when the contents of Bi2O3 increase from 15 mol% to 25 mol%, then Bi3+ destroys the structures of the glasses network. As a result, the glasses network became loose, also the transition temperature, softening point, and melting point of the glasses decrease. On the other hand, the thermal expansion coefficient of the glasses increase. The bonding mode of the glass-ceramic interface sintered at 650 °C belongs to diffusion bonding, and there is no defect on the bonding surface.

Abstract:Tm3+-doped GeS2–In2S3–CsBr chalcohalide glasses are presented and their infrared luminescence properties at S-band are investigated. Composition of glass matrix is 70GeS2–10In2S3–20CsBr (mol%) with the concentration of Tm2S3 in the range of 0.05–0.5mol%. The results showed that the optimal Tm2S3 doping concentration was 0.38mol% at which the glass exhibited an enhanced emission peaking at 1480nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) over 100nm.

Abstract:Glasses with molar composition of (100-x)B2O3-x[0.5 BaO–0.5 ZnO], x=40, 50, 60, 70 were prepared from the melts of ZnO, BaCO3 and H3BO3 mixture. The structure and thermal behavior were characterized by IR and Raman spectroscopy, DSC and Dilatometer. The investigation shows that the transition of the structural unit [BO4] (BIV) to [BO3] (BIII) happens when BaO and ZnO content x increases in the borate glass, resulting in fewer BIII–O–BIV bonds and more BIII–O–BIII bonds. At the same time, the diborate groups, which are found to be the predominant structural group of the glass with high B2O3 content, gradually changes into ring-type metaborate, pyro- and orthoborate groups. With increasing ZnO and BaO content x, the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the softening point (Tf) decreases, while linear expansion coefficient (α) increases, that comes from the weakening of the glass network.
Excitonic Effects in the Optical Spectra of Lithium metasilicate (Li2SiO3)

Abstract:The Li2SiO3 compound, a ternary electrolyte compound of Lithium-ion based batteries, exhibits unique geometric and band structures, an atom-dominated energy spectrum, charge densities distributions, atom and orbital-projected density of states, and strong optical responses. The state-of-the-art analysis, based on an ab-initio simulation, have successfully confirmed the concise physical/chemical picture and the orbital bonding in Li-O and Si-O bonds. Additionally, the unusual optical response behavior includes a large redshift of the onset frequency due to the extremely strong excitonic effect, the polarization of optical properties along three-directions, 22 optical excitations structures and the most prominent plasmon mode in terms of the dielectric functions, energy loss functions, absorption coefficients, and reflectance spectra. The close connections of electronic and optical properties can identify a specific orbital hybridization for each distinct excitation channel. The developed theoretical framework will be very appropriate for fully comprehending the diverse phenomena of cathode/electrolyte/anode materials in ion-based batteries.

Abstract:Lithium borate glass is a widely studied system, mainly due to its good ionic conductivity, thermal conductivity and thermoluminescence properties. The properties of lithium borate glass are determined by its structure, and the change of microstructure unit has great influence on its properties. In this work, the x Li 2 O⋅(1- x ) B 2 O 3 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.48) glass was studied by Raman spectroscopy combined with peaks fitting and density analysis. Through quantitative analysis of Raman spectrum, the change in trend of each structural unit as well as the change of the tetracoordinated boron content ( N 4 ) were obtained with the increase of Li 2 O content. Especially, a more detailed assignment and general transformation mechanism of structural units were presented, and the common inflection points of properties (mass density, molar volume, etc.) and structural units content changes were found. The correlation between the properties (mass density, atomic density and molar volume) and the basic structural units (BØ 3 , BØ 2 O − and BØ 4 − ) of the lithium borate glass was established by the genetic function approximation algorithm (GFA). The study on the structural units in x Li 2 O⋅(1- x ) B 2 O 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.48) glass network and the mutual transformation mechanism between each structural unit is helpful to explore the effects on macroscopic properties as the structural units change.

Abstract:The optical property of LAS glass and the structural states of V4+ ions were studied by use of kinds of spectra (UV–visible, IR, Raman and EPR) in LAS glass and glass–ceramics containing V2O5. It was found that the V4+ ions formed by reduction of V5+ ions, and existed as the VO2+ complex in octahedral coordination with a tetragonal compression with C4v symmetry in LAS glass. Additionally, the V4+ ions partially replaced Li+ and occupied tetrahedral sites in beta-quartz solid solution crystal phase. The color of the glasses drastically changed from light yellow-green to claret during crystallization, and the optical absorption in visible range attribute to the transitions of 2B2g→2B1g and 2B2g→2Eg of V4+ ions in high crystal field, which was affected by the above structural variation of V4+. Moreover, the addition of V2O5 in LAS glass decreased crystallization temperature of main beta-quartz solid solution crystal phase.

Abstract:The effect of composition variations on thermal and crystallization properties of Sb-S-I glass system is investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In general, the glass transition temperature (T-g) and the temperature corresponding to the maximum crystallization rate (T-p) are found to decrease with increasing iodine concentration for a fixed Sb/S ratio. However, precipitation of SbSI phase is sensitive to the Sb/S ratio for a given iodine fraction. The optimal composition and its devitrification behavior for forming only the ferroelectric SbSI phase are established on the basis of DTA curves and XRD patterns.
Infrared Broadband Emission of Bismuth-Doped RO-B_2O_3(R=Ca,Sr,Ba) Glasses

Abstract:We report on broadband infrared emission of bismuth-doped RO-B_2O_3(R=Ca,Sr,Ba) glasses. Glass samples are prepared under various conditions by a conventional melting-quenching method and the luminescence properties in infrared wavelength region are investigated,No apparent infrared luminescence is observed in the SrO-B_2O_3 and BaO-B_2O_3 prepared in air,while glasses prepared in reducing atmosphere exhibit a broadband infrared luminescence peaking at 1300 nm with a full width at half maximum(FWHM) of about 200 nm when excited by an 800 nm laser diode.A mechanism was proposed to explain the observed phenomena. The presence of low valence bismuth,probably Bi~+,is responsible for the broadband infrared emission.

Abstract:The conventional technique has been used to prepare a quaternary glass based on the chemical composition 5Al2O3-\((10+x)\) Li2O-\((70 - x)\) B2O3-15TiO2 \(:(0\le x\le 25)\) mol.%. The Fourier transform infrared spectrometer spectra were investigated for the structural change of these glasses. Ultraviolet spectroscopic at ambient temperature of the investigated glass system. The optical bandgap and refractive index of these glasses were decreased, while Urbach energy was increased. The polarizability and basicity of these glasses have been established. To demonstrate the influence of titanium oxide on dispersion parameters, these glasses were applied. Under controlled heating, the glass–ceramic was prepared and investigated using X-ray diffraction and mechanical characteristic. Glass–ceramic surface morphology has been examined by scanning electron microscope.
