Abstract:This article distinguishes different types of institutional investors, and analyzes the impact of institutional holding on the improvement of firm performance. Empirical study indicates that:(1) Institutional holding has significantly positive effect on the improvement of firm performance; the higher the proportion of the institutional holding is the more incentive and capability institutional investors have to improve firm performance. (2) Different types of institutional investors have different influences on the improvement of firm performance. Funds and securities dealers which hold higher proportion can significantly improve firm performance, while trust companies and insurance companies have no significant effects. (3) The impacts of institutional investors on the improvement of firm performance are mainly in the short-term,and the impacts become weaker in the long-term. In short, institutional investors have been showing their preliminary but limited effects on the improvement of performance. We suggest promoting the scale development of institutional investors, thus enhancing their incentive and capability in improving firm performance.
