Abstract:Axial flow fans and compressors are limited in their applications because of the narrow operating stability range.To get enough surge margin,variable geometry engines have been widely used.It is important that variable geometry setting rules in modern turbofan engines should be established.Based on sequential unconstrained minimization,a model for obtaining these rules is developed and a new method is given for implementing the mode1.This model involves the optimization of combined variable geometry controls of guide vane of fan,guide vane and stators of high pressure compressor,area ratio of mixer and areas of nozzle to obtain minimum specific fuel consumption and enough surge margin.The computer program is also developed.The effectiveness of the proposed model and method is demonstrated by application to a turbofan engine.Under the condition of fixed engine thrust,it is found from simulation results that the surge margin of the turbofan engine is greatly improved.It is apparent that the new method of optimization of combined variable geometry controls for enlarging surge margin of turbofan engine is practical and reliable.

Abstract:Based on two variable surface fit, an analytic method for computing the axial-flow compressor and turbine characteristics was developed. The method was used to calculate the exemplary compressor and turbine characteristics of a turbofan engine. Compared to experimental data, the numerical results show good agreements. It is remarkable that this method is practicable.

Abstract:Through analyzed performance of fanjet adopted technology of combustion inside turbine,the results showed that the thermal-efficiency and the thrust of the fanjet were both increased after technology of combustion inside turbine being used.Two technical schemes of combustion inside turbine were analyzed similarly,the fuel nozzles were installed in stationary blades was a sort of schemes and the turbine as a big combustion chamber was the other one,the former one belongs to the technology of multilevel combustion and the latter belongs to high-temperature air combustion technology.

Abstract:To investigate the influence of blade aspect ratio and solidity on the performance of heavy-duty gas turbine transonic compressors, a multi-objective optimization design platform was built by adopting the blade parameterization method based on the superposition of thickness distribution on the suction surface, the Kriging surrogate model, and the NSGA-II optimization method. The spanwise distribution of solidity and number of blades were the optimization variables. The multi-objective optimization was carried out with isentropic efficiency and stall margin as the objective parameters for the inlet stage transonic rotor of an F-class heavy-duty gas turbine compressor. The results show that the isentropic efficiency and stall margin at design condition with a constant mass flow rate can be improved by 0.96% and 18.7%, respectively, and the total pressure ratio can also increase. The analysis shows that, for regions where the shock wave–boundary layer interaction is obvious, increasing the solidity can reduce the shock wave loss, the shock wave–boundary layer interaction loss, and the end wall loss, and reducing the aspect ratio can reduce the blade boundary layer loss. The spanwise distributions of solidity and aspect ratio determine the stall margin by affecting the radial matching of the load of each blade section. Tip solidity near the tip region needs to be determined according to the pressure field established by the bulk of the flow.

Abstract:According to the airworthiness technology of civil aero-engine, the historical evolution of airworthiness regulation, FAR 33, is investigated. And the general rules are obtained which include developing form, influencing factors of development, and changing trend. Furthermore, the analysis of airworthiness verification technology will be presented in the four aspects which are use, working environment, structure, and system. Plus, the critical points of airworthiness certification and management are discussed. Based on the analysis above, the opportunity and challenge the airworthiness certification work face in the next period are finally prospected, to provide a reference for the related research in the aviation industry.

Abstract:This paper performed the aerodynamic design of the high pressure turbine and power turbine of an 850 Hp turbo-shaft engine with multi-arc and fifth polynomial curves. A particular cooling structure was designed in the high-pressure turbine vanes with the intention of decreasing the temperature of the stator blades. The numerical computations were performed for the flow in the turbine cascades and the computed results showed that the designed cooling structure decreased the temperature of the stator blades efficiently. The flow losses of the high pressure turbine increased due to the separation in the high pressure turbine cascades. The computed results indicated that there is no distinct separation within the power turbine cascades. Generally the performance of the turbine had met the design goal and the optimization will be carried out in order to improve the performance.

Abstract:The development of advanced military aero-engines with high thrust-to-weight ratios requires high-temperature-rise (HTR) technology for core component combustors. This poses a major challenge to multidisciplinary design and optimization of combustors. This paper analyzes the technical characteristics of the HTR combustor and summarizes and proposes three current major technical challenges. For each technical challenge, systematic analysis and comprehensive discussion are conducted from the aspects of technical strategies and research progress. The three technologies reviewed in this paper include (1) combustion configuration technology, (2) liner thermal protection technology involving advanced liner cooling and ceramic matrix composite (CMC) liners, and (3) outlet distribution control technology. We also present our insights regarding current solutions and future research trends related to the three major technical limitations of the HTR combustor.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of turbine engine insufficient thrust caused by low efficiency at high Mach number, a three-axis variable geometry dual-mode turbine engine scheme based on ammonia and n-decane equivalent dual fuel precooling and adjustable low-pressure (LP) turbine guide vane is proposed, and parameters such as specific thrust price, relative thrust economic ratio, volumetric specific fuel consumption are defined to scientifically evaluate the feasibility of the scheme. The ammonia and n-decane dual fuel method is used to expand the efficient working range of the precooler. On the one hand, in the low speed section, the engine operates in the turbofan mode, adjusting the LP turbine guide vane can offset the adverse impact of the precooler low efficiency on the engine thrust performance under the low inlet total temperature, and improve the engine economy. On the other hand, the high speed section operates in the turbojet mode, and the equivalent fuel precooling combined with the LP turbine guide vane adjustment is conducive to improving the working efficiency and thrust performance of the turbojet engine. Feasibility, exergy and thermoeconomic analysis indicate that under different operating modes, due to different control plans, the influence of fuel ratio and heat transfer efficiency changes of dual fuel precooler on engine performance is opposite. For the typical climbing process with H = 0, Ma = 0 to H = 30 km, Ma = 5, this scheme can significantly increase the engine thrust, with a maximum increase of about 41%, but it increases the volume fuel consumption, reduces the engine exergy efficiency, exergy sustainability, and thermoeconomic under the turbofan mode. Therefore, the variable geometry turbine engine scheme based on dual fuel precooling and adjustable LP turbine guide vane has high application potential in supersonic commercial flight under the premise of slightly losing economy.

Aerodynamic Design and Performance Analysis of a Vaneless Counter-Rotating Fan and Compressor

Abstract:The vaneless counter-rotating fan/compressor can effectively reduce the axial length and gyro torque of the engine. However, the absence of the stators can lead to a frequently changing incidence angle at the downstream, which deteriorates the offdesign performance. Moreover, this characteristic deteriorates with the increase of the tangential velocity at the blade tip. In this paper, taking advantage of the low circumferential speed at the root of the fan blade of the small-sized turbofan engine, the fan and compressor were designed as a counter-rotation scheme without a stator. Firstly, the performance of the vaneless counter-rotating fan/compressor are analyzed through the velocity triangle. Then, an one-dimensional design program for the vaneless counter-rotating fan/compressor is developed to optimize the design parameters. Finally, a small size vaneless counter-rotating fan/compressor is designed with its design point efficiency of 85.1% and pressure ratio of 3.16. Results show that the relative inlet flow angle towards the downstream rotors varies less than that in conventional compressors, while the incoming flow velocity would increase by 1.5 to 3 times compared to conventional ones. Thus, the hub ratio and speed ratio of a counter-rotating fan/compressor have a sensitively effect on its efficiency and stall margin. Moreover, a reduction in speed ratio could improve the efficiency and stall margin of the counter-rotating fan/compressor, and the speed ratio should be set as a compromise value under the design restrictions.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The historical trends of reduction in fuel consumption and emissions from aero engines have been mainly due to the improvement in the thermal efficiency, propulsive efficiency and combustion technology. The engine Overall Pressure Ratio (OPR) and Turbine Inlet Temperature (TIT) are being increased in the pursuit of increasing the engine thermal efficiency. However, this has an adverse effect on engine NOx emission. The current paper investigates a possible solution to overcome this problem for future generation Very High Bypass Ratio (VHBR)/Ultra High Bypass Ratio (UHBR) aero-engines in the form of an Inter-stage Turbine Burner (ITB). The ITB concept is investigated on a next generation baseline VHBR aero engine to evaluate its effect on the engine performance and emission characteristics for different ITB energy fractions. It is found that the ITB can reduce the bleed air required for cooling the HPT substantially (around 80%) and also reduce the NOx emission significantly (>30%) without penalising the engine specific fuel consumption.
A Performance Simulation Methodology for a Whole Turboshaft Engine Based on Throughflow Modelling

Abstract:To accurately predict the matching relationships between the various components and the engine performance in the whole aero-engine environment, this study introduces a two-dimensional throughflow simulation method for the whole aero-engine. This method is based on individual throughflow solvers for the turbo-machinery and the combustor. It establishes a throughflow simulation model for the whole engine by integrating with the compressor-turbine co-operating equations and boundary conditions. The turbo-machinery throughflow solver employs a circumferentially averaged form of the time-dependent Navier–Stokes equations (N-S) as the governing equation. The combustor solver uses the Reynolds Average Navier–Stokes (RANS) method to solve flow and chemical reaction processes by constructing turbulence, combustion, and radiation models. The accuracy of the component solver is validated using Pratt and Whitney's three-stage axial compressor (P&W3S1) and General Electric's high-pressure turbine (GE-EEE HPT), and the predicted results are consistent with the experimental data. Finally, the developed throughflow method is applied to simulate the throttling characteristics of the WZ-X turboshaft engine. The results predicted by the throughflow program are consistent with the GasTurb calculations, including the trends of shaft power delivered, specific fuel consumption (SFC), inlet airflow, and total pressure ratio of the compressor. The developed method to perform throughflow simulation of the whole aero-engine eliminates the dependence on a general component map. It can quickly obtain the meridian flow field parameters and overall engine characteristics, which is expected to guide the design and modification of the engine in the future.

Abstract:A flying characteristic simulation method was studied for two-stage turbocharging compression ignition (CI) engine propeller propulsion system, intended for medium/high altitude low-speed long-endurance multirole aerial vehicle systems at 10–20 km high. Introducing the simulation method for gas turbine engine with component models, based upon component maps or algebraic equations, this method solved joint-working equations of the propulsion system by Newton iteration method to obtain cooperation points of the system. A full-power holding (FPH) requirement and turbocharger-engine collaboration condition were stated. The regulating rules in both FPH mode and power lapse (PL) mode were analyzed. The influences of regulating rules on turbocharger operating lines were placed. Finally, the altitude–velocity characteristics of the propulsion system and components were investigated. The research shows three results. This method converges rapidly that usually it needs only 5–6 iterations to obtain one operating point. The regulation scheme of two gas-bypass valves cannot only meet the design objectives but also allow an effective adjusting to the operating points of the turbochargers. This method can be extended conveniently to the simulations of more complex multistage turbocharging systems.

Abstract:Abstract This paper aims at optimizing a Turbine Based Combined Cycle (TBCC) nozzle for upgrading its aerodynamic performance in multiple flight conditions. An in-house RANS solver called NSAWET is employed for aerodynamic evaluation. The optimizer is a differential evolution algorithm combined with a response surface. Firstly, a two-dimensional model of the initial TBCC nozzle system is investigated. The flow field of the nozzle contains complicated shockwave interactions that cause thrust loss. Then multi-point aerodynamic optimization of a two-dimensional ramjet nozzle is carried out, which objectives are to maximize the thrust coefficients at Mach numbers 2.5, 3.0 and 4.0. The objective functions are increased substantially at the first two Mach numbers after optimization, while slightly decreased at the last Mach number. The turbine flow path is built up based on the optimized profile and the performances in typical flight conditions are validated. Results demonstrate that both the ramjet and turbine nozzles are improved in most flight conditions.

A design for turbine variable nozzle vane is presented, Based on 1-D calculation result, the variable nozzle cascades structure is set up. The aerodynamic vane profile of the nozzle is shaped by using B-spline curve. In this way, the gas flow is sure to accelerate inside the passage at different state, the gas velocity at the nozzle outlet is increased and the flow loss is reduced. The results of three-dimensional numerical simulation show that the performance of the designed variable nozzle vane is good in different state.

Abstract:Aero engine is a kind of thermodynamic machinery, which require have strict aerodynamic load, mechanical load and strong durability, its longevity depends largely on the life of its main components. In this paper, a series of studies are carried out on the strength of fan blades of CFM56 engine, which provide a reference value for improving the reliability of the engine. The finite element model of the engine fan is established by using CATIA’s finite element software.The centrifugal stress distribution of the fan at different speeds and the influence of torque on fans under different speeds are calculated respectively, and the static strength of the fan is checked.

Abstract:With the development of aviation technology and the scramble for air supremacy is becoming increasingly fierce, people put forward higher requirements on the performance of the fighter. The thrust vector nozzle based on flow control has many advantages compared with the traditional mechanical control method, in the thrust vector technology, the thrust loss is low, it can also be applied in subsonic speed. Thrust vector technology has a wider application background. In this paper, the basic principle of counter current thrust vector technology is explained firstly, then the simplified derivation of the formula and the definition of related parameters are derived by the control body analysis. And fluent software is used to simulate the existing experimental model, the obtained numerical results are compared with the experimental data available in the literature, verification proves that the numerical method is feasible. Then change the Maher number of outflow size of vector analysis to effect change. Finally, for thrust vector effect is not obvious under the Maher problem, the design provides a method for vacuum reverse two secondary channel, and its feasibility by using the method of numerical analysis, the vacuum in the two channel is increased, and the thrust vector angle can reach to 18.1 degrees from 1.7 degrees, an increase of about 10 times.

Abstract:To investigate the effect of the dynamic deflection process of a two-dimensional vector nozzle on its actuator load and engine performance, a comprehensive modeling method of two-dimensional vector nozzle/actuator load/turbofan engine is proposed. Firstly, based on the two-dimensional vector nozzle spatial motion model, combined with force and moment analysis, the mechanical model of vector nozzle actuation system is established; The load spectrum of the actuating system under different working conditions and deflection angles is obtained by CFD numerical simulation results; Using AMESim, the hydraulic actuation system model of two-dimensional vector nozzle is established. Finally, a two-dimensional vector nozzle/actuator/turbofan engine comprehensive model is established based on the component-level model of turbofan engine. The comprehensive model can accurately calculate the changes of main performance parameters such as engine rotor speed, thrust and pre-turbine temperature when the nozzle vector deflects. The simulation results show that the load on the nozzle actuator is positively correlated with the deflection angle, and the load change will lead to the fluctuation of the output displacement of the hydraulic actuation system. During vector deflection, due to the change of engine circulation capacity and thrust coefficient, the performance parameters such as engine low-pressure rotor speed and surge margin fluctuate greatly.
