Abstract:While it is known that the mean flow in a spanwise rotating channel follows a linear law at the pressure side with an additive constant $C$, the exact dependence of this additive constant on the Reynolds number and the rotation speed was not entirely clear. It is shown that this additive constant $C$ is a logarithmic function of a rotating induced length scale. After determining the mean-flow scaling, this knowledge is used for wall modeling and for relating the skin friction and the flow rate.

Abstract:As one of the canonical flow problems in compressible wall-bounded turbulence, compressible turbulent channel flow (CTCF) with symmetric isothermal boundaries has been studied a lot in the past. In the present work, an empirical scaling for the central mean temperature in CTCFs is proposed. The scaling originates from the generalized Reynolds analogy (GRA) theory, and it depends on the Mach number, Prandtl number, and ratio of the central mean velocity to the bulk mean velocity. The available direct numerical simulation data with the bulk Reynolds number ranging from 3000 to 34 000 and Mach number ranging from 0.5 to 4.0 are used to assess the proposed scaling. It is found that the empirical scaling is quite accurate and most of the relative errors are below 1.5%. With the scaling of the central mean temperature and the GRA theory, the mean temperature profile can be quantitatively obtained through the mean velocity in CTCFs.
Generalized Scaling of the Turbulence Structure in Wall-Bounded Flows

Abstract:Scaling of the Reynolds stresses has been sought by many researchers, since it provides a template of universal dynamical patterns across a range of Reynolds numbers. Various statistical and normalization schemes have been attempted, but without complete or convincing similarity properties. Our prior work on the transport processes in wall-bounded flows point toward self-similarity in the gradient space, where the first and second derivatives of the Reynolds stress components exhibit universal scaling across the entire boundary layer. This scaling is extendable to compressible flows. Finally, a universal, integral scaling for the mean velocity profiles is discovered and presented.

Abstract:Semi-local scales have been widely used in compressible wall-bounded turbulence, but it is still unclear whether they are applicable to the scaling of coherent structures, especially under conditions of high Mach number and cold wall temperature. By scrutinizing the direct numerical simulation dataset at different Mach numbers and wall temperatures, this paper demonstrates that the coherent structures normalized by semi-local scales are universal in size. In addition to this, we find that the ratios of Kolmogorov scales to semi-local scales are independent of Mach number and wall temperature. Thus, Kolmogorov scales can achieve the same scaling effect as the semi-local scales. The velocity spectra are also compared to verify the current scaling method quantitatively. A method to determine the threshold for the vortex identification criterion is proposed, allowing the same threshold for different cases to obtain vortices of similar size. The scaling of other statistics including turbulent kinetic energy, streamwise Reynolds normal stress, and root mean square of fluctuating vorticity is also investigated. A new velocity scale is proposed based on the total-stress-based transformation for mean streamwise velocity, which can collapse the profiles of these statistics more accurately than the semi-local velocity scale. The present paper demonstrates that through appropriate normalization, the structures and statistics of compressible turbulence become universal, reaffirming the validity of Morkovin's hypothesis even for the present high Mach number and cold wall cases.

Abstract:Autocorrelations of squared velocity derivatives and squared vorticity fluctuation components have been measured at the centerline in the wake of a circular cylinder. Near the start of the inertial range, all the correlations exhibit similar power-law behaviors and yield essentially the same estimate of the intermittency exponent μ. The results imply that (∂u/∂x)2 may be a reasonable substitute for the instantaneous dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy, for determining the value of μ.

Abstract:We analyze the isotropic component of turbulent flows spanning a broad range of Reynolds numbers. The aim is to identify scaling laws and their Reynolds number dependence in flows under different mechanical forcings. To this end, we applied an SO(3) decomposition to data stemming from direct numerical simulations with spatial resolutions ranging from 64^3 to 1024^3 grid points, and studied the scaling of high order moments of the velocity field. The study was carried out for two different flows obtained forcing the system with a Taylor-Green vortex or the Arn'old-Beltrami-Childress flow. Our results indicate that helicity has no significant impact on the scaling exponents. Intermittency effects increase with the Reynolds number in the range of parameters studied, and are larger than what can be expected from several models in the literature. Finally, we confirm previous results showing the use of the SO(3) decomposition improves the convergence of scaling exponents.

Abstract:Starting with the Navier-Stokes equations, a transport equation is written for the sum of the squared vorticity increments in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. This equation is compared with that for the sum of the squared velocity increments; whereas the latter equation exhibits a linear dependence on separation, the former does not. In the limit of a negligibly small separation, the new equation expresses a balance between the production and dissipation of the mean square vorticity gradient. All terms in the equation have been measured using a three-component vorticity probe in the self-preserving region of a low Reynolds number turbulent wake.

Abstract:In this paper, the scaling property of the inverse energy cascade and forward enstrophy cascade of the vorticity filed $\omega(x,y)$ in two-dimensional (2D) turbulence is analyzed. This is accomplished by applying a Hilbert-based technique, namely Hilbert-Huang Transform, to a vorticity field obtained from a $8192^2$ grid-points direct numerical simulation of the 2D turbulence with a forcing scale $k_f=100$ and an Ekman friction. The measured joint probability density function $p(C,k)$ of mode $C_i(x)$ of the vorticity $\omega$ and instantaneous wavenumber $k(x)$ is separated by the forcing scale $k_f$ into two parts, which corresponding to the inverse energy cascade and the forward enstrophy cascade. It is found that all conditional pdf $p(C\vert k)$ at given wavenumber $k$ has an exponential tail. In the inverse energy cascade, the shape of $p(C\vert k)$ does collapse with each other, indicating a nonintermittent cascade. The measured scaling exponent $\zeta_{\omega}^I(q)$ is linear with the statistical order $q$, i.e., $\zeta_{\omega}^I(q)=-q/3$, confirming the nonintermittent cascade process. In the forward enstrophy cascade, the core part of $p(C\vert k)$ is changing with wavenumber $k$, indicating an intermittent forward cascade. The measured scaling exponent $\zeta_{\omega}^F(q)$ is nonlinear with $q$ and can be described very well by a log-Poisson fitting: $\zeta_{\omega}^F(q)=\frac{1}{3}q+0.45\left(1-0.43^{q}\right)$. However, the extracted vorticity scaling exponents $\zeta_{\omega}(q)$ for both inverse energy cascade and forward enstrophy cascade are not consistent with Kraichnan\rq{}s theory prediction. New theory for the vorticity field in 2D turbulence is required to interpret the observed scaling behavior.

Abstract:The present study investigates the combined impact of the intermittency associated with the turbulent-nonturbulent interface and the mean shear rate in an axisymmetric jet on the structure of turbulence in the scaling range, where the spectrum exhibits a power-law behavior. Second-order structure functions, autocorrelations of the dissipation rate, and spectra of both the longitudinal velocity fluctuation and the passive temperature fluctuation are measured at a distance of 40 diameter downstream from the nozzle exit. All the scaling range exponents are influenced by the large-scale intermittency and the mean shear. The scalar fluctuation is much more sensitive to the variation in large-scale intermittency than the velocity fluctuation.

Abstract:The presence of mean velocity gradients induces anisotropies in turbulent flows, which affect even the smallest scales of motion at finite Reynolds numbers. By performing direct numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations, we study the return to isotropy of a homogeneous turbulent flow initially in a statistically stationary state under a uniform shear, S = partial derivative U-1/partial derivative x(2), in the conceptually simple situation where the mean shear is suddenly released. In particular, we characterize the timescales involved in the dynamics. We observe that the Reynolds stress tensor, which measures the large-scale flow anisotropy, relaxes towards an isotropic form over a timescale of the order of the large-eddy turnover time of turbulence, in qualitative agreement with previous studies with different types of initially imposed mean velocity gradient. We also investigate how the correlations of the velocity gradient tensor relax to isotropy with time. In particular, we focus on the properties of the one-point vorticity correlations and . The nonzero off-diagonal term of the second-order correlation tensor, i.e., the correlation between the streamwise and the transverse components of vorticity, , decreases towards 0 over a time of the order of the Kolmogorov timescale. In comparison, the anisotropies in the diagonal components (i = 1, 2, or 3) relax over a time significantly longer than the Kolmogorov timescale. This difference can be explained by an elementary theoretical analysis of the dynamics of the anisotropy tensor b(ij)(omega) / - 1/3 delta(ij) at the instant when the shear is released. We also observe that the skewness of the spanwise component of vorticity, S-omega 3, relaxes slowly towards zero. The relaxation of a small-scale quantity over a time much longer than the Kolmogorov timescale, as surprising as it may seem, is in fact consistent with a known relation between velocity-gradient correlations and the pressure-rate-of-strain correlation, and raises the important question of separation between the timescales characterizing the return to isotropy at large and small scales.

Abstract:High-resolution direct numerical simulations of 3D Navier-Stokes turbulence with normal viscosity and hyperviscosity are carried out. It is found that the inertial-range statistics, both the scalings and the probability density functions, are independent of the dissipation mechanism, while the near-dissipation-range fluctuations show significant structural differences. Nevertheless, the relative scalings expressing the dependence of the moments at different orders are universal, and show unambiguous departure from the Kolmogorov 1941 description, including the 2/3 law for the kinetic energy. Implications for numerical modeling of turbulence are discussed.

Abstract:A new scaling is derived that yields a Reynolds number independent profile for all components of the Reynolds stress in the near-wall region of wall bounded flows, including channel, pipe and boundary layer flows. The scaling demonstrates the important role played by the wall shear stress fluctuations and how the large eddies determine the Reynolds number dependence of the near-wall turbulence behavior.

Abstract:Classical Mach-number (M) scaling in compressible wall turbulence was suggested by van Driest (Van Driest E R. Turbulent boundary layers in compressible fluids. J Aerodynamics Science, 1951, 18(3): 145–160) and Huang et al. (Huang P G, Coleman G N, Bradshaw P. Compressible turbulent channel flows: DNS results and modeling. J Fluid Mech, 1995, 305: 185–218). Using a concept of velocity-vorticity correlation structure (VVCS), defined by high correlation regions in a field of two-point cross-correlation coefficient between a velocity and a vorticity component, we have discovered a limiting VVCS as the closest streamwise vortex structure to the wall, which provides a concrete Morkovin scaling summarizing all compressibility effects. Specifically, when the height and mean velocity of the limiting VVCS are used as the units for the length scale and the velocity, all geometrical measures in the spanwise and normal directions, as well as the mean velocity and fluctuation (r.m.s) profiles become M-independent. The results are validated by direct numerical simulations (DNS) of compressible channel flows with M up to 3. Furthermore, a quantitative model is found for the M-scaling in terms of the wall density, which is also validated by the DNS data. These findings yield a geometrical interpretation of the semi-local transformation (Huang et al., 1995), and a conclusion that the location and the thermodynamic properties associated with the limiting VVCS determine the M-effects on supersonic wall-bounded flows.

Abstract:Revisiting the fluctuating vorticity field in the centerplane of a turbulent channel flow, we show that the vorticity is distinctly anisotropic at low Reynolds numbers (Re). This result is in contrast with some earlier conclusions. The anisotropy is a function of Re, and we have compiled data to show that the anisotropy gradually vanishes with increasing Re. Acknowledging the anisotropy is important for current efforts on simulating turbulent particle suspensions.

Abstract:We present new scaling expressions, including high-Reynolds-number (Re) predictions, for all Reynolds stress components in the entire flow domain of turbulent channel and pipe flows. In Part 1 (She et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 827, 2017, pp. 322-356), based on the dilation symmetry of the mean Navier-Stokes equation a four-layer formula of the Reynolds shear stress length l(12) - and hence also the entire mean velocity profile (MVP) - was obtained. Here, random dilations on the second-order balance equations for all the Reynolds stressess (shear stress - (u'v') over bar, and normal stresses (u'u') over bar, (v'v') over bar, (w'w') over bar) are analysed layer by layer, and similar four-layer formulae of the corresponding stress length functions are analysed layer by layer, and similar four-layer formulae of the corresponding stress length functions are analysed layer by layer, and similar four-layer formulae of the corresponding stress length functions l(11), l(22), l(33 ) (hence the three turbulence intensities) are obtained for turbulent channel and pipe flows. In particular, direct numerical simulation (DNS) data arc shown to agree well with the four-layer formulae for l(12) and l(22) - which have the celebrated linear scalings in the logarithmic layer, i.e. (hence the three turbulence intensities) are obtained for turbulent channel and pipe flows. Furthermore, another mesolayer modification of l(11) yields the experimentally observed location and magnitude of the outer peak of (u'u') over bar. The resulting (-u'v') over bar, (u'u') over bar, (u'v') over bar and (w'w') over bar are all in good agreement with DNS and experimental data in the entire flow domain. Our additional results include: (1) the maximum turbulent production is located at y(+) approximate to 12; (2) the location of peak value (-u'v') over bar (p) has a scaling transition from 5.7Re(tau)(1/3) to 1.5Re(tau)(-1/2) Re-tau approximate to 3000, with a 1 + (-u'v') over bar p(+ ) scaling transition from 8.5Re(tau)(-2/3) to 3.0Re(tau)(-1/2) (Re(tau )the friction Reynolds number); (3) the peak value (w'w') over bar p(+) approximate to 0.84Re(tau)(0.14 )(1 - 48/Re tau); (4) the outer peak of (u'u') over bar emerges above Re-tau approximate to 10(4 )with its location scaling as 1.1Re(tau)(1/2 )and its magnitude scaling as 2.8Re(tau)(0.09); (5) an alternative derivation of the log law of Townsend (1976, The Structure of Turbulent Shear flow, Cambridge University Press), (u'u') over bar (+) approximate to -1.25 ln y + 1.63 (w'w') over bar (+) approximate to ln y + 1.00 in the bulk.
Three-Component Vorticity Measurements in A Turbulent Grid Flow

Abstract:All components of the fluctuating vorticity vector have been measured in decaying grid turbulence using a vorticity probe of relatively simple geometry (four X-probes, i.e. a total of eight hot wires). The data indicate that local isotropy is more closely satisfied than global isotropy, the r.m.s. vorticities being more nearly equal than the r.m.s. velocities. Two checks indicate that the performance of the probe is satisfactory. Firstly, the fully measured mean energy dissipation rate [epsilon] is in good agreement with the value inferred from the rate of decay of the mean turbulent energy [q(2)] in the quasi-homogeneous region; the isotropic mean energy dissipation rate [epsilon(iso)] agrees closely with this value even though individual elements of [epsilon] indicate departures from isotropy. Secondly, the measured decay rate of the mean-square vorticity [omega(2)] is consistent with that of [q(2)] and in reasonable agreement with the isotropic form of the transport equation for [omega(2)]. Although [epsilon] similar or equal to [epsilon(iso)], there are discernible differences between the statistics of epsilon and epsilon(iso); in particular, epsilon(iso) is poorly correlated with either epsilon or omega(2). The behaviour of velocity increments has been examined over a narrow range of separations for which the third-order longitudinal velocity structure function is approximately linear. In this range, transverse velocity increments show larger departures than longitudinal increments from predictions of Kolmogorov (1941). The data indicate that this discrepancy is only partly associated with differences between statistics of locally averaged epsilon and omega(2), the latter remaining more intermittent than the former across this range. It is more likely caused by a departure from isotropy due to the small value of R-lambda, the Taylor microscale Reynolds number, in this experiment.

Abstract:Reynolds Equation is the most commonly used governing equation in turbulence. However, its application in wall-bounded turbulent shear flows may involve a defect. In general, Reynolds averaging should be ensemble averaging and Reynolds stresses are supposed to express all the actions of turbulence on the mean field. In statistically steady three-dimensional flows, Reynolds stresses are usually defined as correlations of temporal velocity fluctuations so that they cannot contain the influences of steady components of streamwise vortices. This is believed to be one of the reasons why many closure models in RANS meet problems in flows where streamwise vortices play significant roles. In this paper, Spatial-Temporal (S-T) averaged Reynolds stresses were defined, which separates the turbulence actions caused by temporal or spatial velocity fluctuations. DNS data for a fully developed channel flow were then used to check balancing of equations. Comparison showed that the balancing errors in the S-T averaged Reynolds equations were obviously smaller than those in the temporal averaged one, in particular, in the near wall region where the streamwise vortices located. Thus, a combination of traditional model with a supplemental model expressing influences of streamwise vortices might be a way out to improve the turbulence modeling.

Abstract:We study the sub-grid scale characteristics of a vorticity-transport-based approach for large-eddy simulations. In particular, we consider a multi-dimensional upwind scheme for the vorticity transport equations and establish its properties in the under-resolved regime. The asymptotic behavior of key turbulence statistics of velocity gradients, vorticity, and invariants is studied in detail. Modified equation analysis indicates that dissipation can be controlled locally via non-linear limiting of the gradient employed for the vorticity reconstruction on the cell face such that low numerical diffusion is obtained in well-resolved regimes and high numerical diffusion is realized in under-resolved regions. The enstrophy budget highlights the remarkable ability of the truncation terms to mimic the true sub-grid scale dissipation and diffusion. The modified equation also reveals diffusive terms that are similar to several commonly employed sub-grid scale models including tensor-gradient and hyper-viscosity models. Investigations on several canonical turbulence flow cases show that large-scale features are adequately represented and remain consistent in terms of spectral energy over a range of grid resolutions. Numerical dissipation in under-resolved simulations is consistent and can be characterized by diffusion terms discovered in the modified equation analysis. A minimum state of scale separation necessary to obtain asymptotic behavior is characterized using metrics such as effective Reynolds number and effective grid spacing. Temporally-evolving jet simulations, characterized by large-scale vortical structures, demonstrate that high Reynolds number vortex-dominated flows are captured when criteria is met and necessitate diffusive non-linear limiting of vorticity reconstruction be employed to realize accuracy in under-resolved simulations.

Abstract:Direct numerical simulation data for the lateral velocity derivative ∂u/∂y at the centreline of a fully developed turbulent channel flow provide reasonable support for Wyngaard's analysis of the error involved in measuring this quantity using parallel hot wires. Numerical data in the wall region of the channel flow also provide a useful indication of how to select the separation between the wires. Justification for this choice is obtained by comparing several measured statistics of ∂u/∂y with the corresponding numerical data.
