Abstract:While it is known that the mean flow in a spanwise rotating channel follows a linear law at the pressure side with an additive constant $C$, the exact dependence of this additive constant on the Reynolds number and the rotation speed was not entirely clear. It is shown that this additive constant $C$ is a logarithmic function of a rotating induced length scale. After determining the mean-flow scaling, this knowledge is used for wall modeling and for relating the skin friction and the flow rate.
Torque Scaling in Turbulent Taylor-Couette Flow with Co- and Counter-Rotating Cylinders

Abstract:We analyze the global transport properties of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow in the strongly turbulent regime for independently rotating outer and inner cylinders, reaching Reynolds numbers of the inner and outer cylinders of Re_i = 2 x 10^6 and Re_o = 1.4 x 10^6, respectively. For all Re_i, Re_o, the dimensionless torque G scales as a function of the Taylor number Ta (which is proportional to the square of the difference between the angular velocities of the inner and outer cylinders) with a universal effective scaling law G \propto Ta^{0.88}, corresponding to Nu_omega \propto Ta^{0.38} for the Nusselt number characterizing the angular velocity transport between the inner and outer cylinders. The exponent 0.38 corresponds to the ultimate regime scaling for the analogous Rayleigh-Benard system. The transport is most efficient for the counterrotating case along the diagonal in phase space with omega_o \approx -0.4 omega_i.
Turbulence Strength in Ultimate Taylor–Couette Turbulence

Abstract:We provide experimental measurements for the effective scaling of the Taylor–Reynolds number within the bulk $\mathit{Re}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706},\mathit{bulk}}$ , based on local flow quantities as a function of the driving strength (expressed as the Taylor number $\mathit{Ta}$ ), in the ultimate regime of Taylor–Couette flow. We define $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706},bulk}=(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{bulk}(u_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}}))^{2}(15/(\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}_{bulk}))^{1/2}$ , where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{bulk}(u_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}})$ is the bulk-averaged standard deviation of the azimuthal velocity, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}_{bulk}$ is the bulk-averaged local dissipation rate and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ is the liquid kinematic viscosity. The data are obtained through flow velocity field measurements using particle image velocimetry. We estimate the value of the local dissipation rate $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}(r)$ using the scaling of the second-order velocity structure functions in the longitudinal and transverse directions within the inertial range – without invoking Taylor’s hypothesis. We find an effective scaling of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}_{\mathit{bulk}}/(\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}^{3}d^{-4})\sim \mathit{Ta}^{1.40}$ , (corresponding to $\mathit{Nu}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714},\mathit{bulk}}\sim \mathit{Ta}^{0.40}$ for the dimensionless local angular velocity transfer), which is nearly the same as for the global energy dissipation rate obtained from both torque measurements ( $\mathit{Nu}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}\sim \mathit{Ta}^{0.40}$ ) and direct numerical simulations ( $\mathit{Nu}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}\sim \mathit{Ta}^{0.38}$ ). The resulting Kolmogorov length scale is then found to scale as $\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}_{\mathit{bulk}}/d\sim \mathit{Ta}^{-0.35}$ and the turbulence intensity as $I_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D703},\mathit{bulk}}\sim \mathit{Ta}^{-0.061}$ . With both the local dissipation rate and the local fluctuations available we finally find that the Taylor–Reynolds number effectively scales as $\mathit{Re}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706},\mathit{bulk}}\sim \mathit{Ta}^{0.18}$ in the present parameter regime of $4.0\times 10^{8}<\mathit{Ta}<9.0\times 10^{10}$ .

Abstract:A direct numerical simulation with turbulent transport of a scalar quantity has been carried out to grasp and understand a laminarization phenomena caused by a pipe rotation. In this study, the Reynolds number, which is based on a bulk velocity and a pipe diameter, was set to be constant; Re-b = 5283, and the rotating ratios of a wag velocity to a bulk velocity were set to be 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. A uniform heat-flux was applied to the wall as a thermal boundary condition. Prandtl number of the working fluid was assumed to be 0.71. The number of computational grids used in this study was 256 X 128 x 128 in the z-, r- and phi- directions, respectively. The turbulent quantities such as the mean flow, temperature fluctuations, turbulent stresses and pressure distribution and the turbulent statistics were obtained. Moreover, the Reynolds stress and the scalar flux budgets were also obtained for each rotating ratio. The turbulent drag decreases with the rotating ratio increase. The reason of this drag reduction can be considered that the additional rotational production terms appear in the azimuthal turbulence component. The contributions of convection and production terms to the radial scalar flux budget and also to the balance with temperature-pressure gradient term are significant. The dissipation and viscous diffusion terms are negligible in higher rotating ratio.

Abstract:We present new scaling expressions, including high-Reynolds-number (Re) predictions, for all Reynolds stress components in the entire flow domain of turbulent channel and pipe flows. In Part 1 (She et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 827, 2017, pp. 322-356), based on the dilation symmetry of the mean Navier-Stokes equation a four-layer formula of the Reynolds shear stress length l(12) - and hence also the entire mean velocity profile (MVP) - was obtained. Here, random dilations on the second-order balance equations for all the Reynolds stressess (shear stress - (u'v') over bar, and normal stresses (u'u') over bar, (v'v') over bar, (w'w') over bar) are analysed layer by layer, and similar four-layer formulae of the corresponding stress length functions are analysed layer by layer, and similar four-layer formulae of the corresponding stress length functions are analysed layer by layer, and similar four-layer formulae of the corresponding stress length functions l(11), l(22), l(33 ) (hence the three turbulence intensities) are obtained for turbulent channel and pipe flows. In particular, direct numerical simulation (DNS) data arc shown to agree well with the four-layer formulae for l(12) and l(22) - which have the celebrated linear scalings in the logarithmic layer, i.e. (hence the three turbulence intensities) are obtained for turbulent channel and pipe flows. However, data show an invariant peak location for (w'w') over bar, which theoretically leads to an anomalous scaling in l(33) in the log layer only, namely l(33) alpha y(1-gamma) with gamma approximate to 0.07. Furthermore, another mesolayer modification of l(11) yields the experimentally observed location and magnitude of the outer peak of (u'u') over bar. The resulting (-u'v') over bar, (u'u') over bar, (u'v') over bar and (w'w') over bar are all in good agreement with DNS and experimental data in the entire flow domain. Our additional results include: (1) the maximum turbulent production is located at y(+) approximate to 12; (2) the location of peak value (-u'v') over bar (p) has a scaling transition from 5.7Re(tau)(1/3) to 1.5Re(tau)(-1/2) Re-tau approximate to 3000, with a 1 + (-u'v') over bar p(+ ) scaling transition from 8.5Re(tau)(-2/3) to 3.0Re(tau)(-1/2) (Re(tau )the friction Reynolds number); (3) the peak value (w'w') over bar p(+) approximate to 0.84Re(tau)(0.14 )(1 - 48/Re tau); (4) the outer peak of (u'u') over bar emerges above Re-tau approximate to 10(4 )with its location scaling as 1.1Re(tau)(1/2 )and its magnitude scaling as 2.8Re(tau)(0.09); (5) an alternative derivation of the log law of Townsend (1976, The Structure of Turbulent Shear flow, Cambridge University Press), (u'u') over bar (+) approximate to -1.25 ln y + 1.63 (w'w') over bar (+) approximate to ln y + 1.00 in the bulk.

Abstract:The flow structure of strongly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow with Reynolds numbers up to Re-i = 2 x 10(6) of the inner cylinder is experimentally examined with high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV). The wind Reynolds numbers Re-w of the turbulent Taylor-vortex flow is found to scale as Re-w alpha Ta-1/2, exactly as predicted by Grossmann and Lohse [Phys. Fluids 23, 045108 (2011).] for the ultimate turbulence regime, in which the boundary layers are turbulent. The dimensionless angular velocity flux has an effective scaling of Nu(omega) alpha Ta-0.38, also in correspondence with turbulence in the ultimate regime. The scaling of Nu(omega) is confirmed by local angular velocity flux measurements extracted from high-speed PIV measurements: though the flux shows huge fluctuations, its spatial and temporal average nicely agrees with the result from the global torque measurements.
Scaling of Maximum Probability Density Function of Velocity Increments in Turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard Convection

Abstract:In this paper, we apply a scaling analysis of the maximum of the probability density function (pdf) of velocity increments, i.e., ${p_{\max }}\left( \tau \right) = {\max _{\Delta {u_\tau }}}p\left( {\Delta {u_\tau }} \right) \sim {\tau ^{ - \alpha }}$, for a velocity field of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection obtained at the Taylor-microscale Reynolds number Reλ ≈ 60. The scaling exponent α is comparable with that of the first-order velocity structure function, ζ(1), in which the large-scale effect might be constrained, showing the background fluctuations of the velocity field. It is found that the integral time T(x/D) scales as T(x/D) ~ (x/D)−β, with a scaling exponent β = 0.25 ± 0.01, suggesting the large-scale inhomo-geneity of the flow. Moreover, the pdf scaling exponent α(x, z) is strongly inhomogeneous in the x (horizontal) direction. The vertical-direction-averaged pdf scaling exponent $\tilde \alpha \left( x \right)$ obeys a logarithm law with respect to x, the distance from the cell sidewall, with a scaling exponent ξ ≈ 0.22 within the velocity boundary layer and ξ ≈ 0.28 near the cell sidewall. In the cell’s central region, α(x, z) fluctuates around 0.37, which agrees well with ζ(1) obtained in high-Reynolds-number turbulent flows, implying the same intermittent correction. Moreover, the length of the inertial range represented in decade ${{\tilde T}_I}\left( x \right)$ is found to be linearly increasing with the wall distance x with an exponent 0.65 ± 0.05.
Scaling relations for heat and momentum transport in sheared Rayleigh-Bénard convection

Abstract:We provide scaling relations for the Nusselt number $Nu$ and the friction coefficient $C_{S}$ in sheared Rayleigh-Bénard convection, i.e., in Rayleigh-Bénard flow with Couette or Poiseuille type shear forcing, by extending the Grossmann & Lohse (2000,2001,2002,2004) theory to sheared thermal convection. The control parameters for these systems are the Rayleigh number $Ra$, the Prandtl number $Pr$, and the Reynolds number $Re_S$ that characterises the strength of the imposed shear. By direct numerical simulations and theoretical considerations, we show that in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection, the friction coefficients associated with the applied shear and the shear generated by the large-scale convection rolls are both well described by Prandtl's (1932) logarithmic friction law, suggesting some kind of universality between purely shear driven flows and thermal convection. These scaling relations hold well for $10^6 \leq Ra \leq 10^8$, $0.5 \leq Pr \leq 5.0$, and $0 \leq Re_S \leq 10^4$.

Statistics of Turbulent Fluctuations in Counter-Rotating Taylor-Couette Flows.

Abstract:The statistics of velocity fluctuations of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow are examined. The rotation rates of the inner and outer cylinders are varied while keeping the Taylor number fixed to 1.49×10(12) [O(Re)=10(6)]. The azimuthal velocity component of the flow is measured using laser Doppler anemometry. For each experiment 5×10(6) data points are acquired and carefully analyzed. Using extended self-similarity [Benzi et al., Phys. Rev. E 48, R29 (1993)] the longitudinal structure function exponents are extracted and are found to weakly depend on the ratio of the rotation rates. For the case where only the inner cylinder rotates the results are in good agreement with results measured by Lewis and Swinney [Phys. Rev. E 59, 5457 (1999)] using hot-film anemometry. The power spectra show clear -5/3 scaling for the intermediate angular velocity ratios -ω(o)/ω(i)∈{0.6,0.8,1.0}, roughly -5/3 scaling for -ω(o)/ω(i)∈{0.2,0.3,0.4,2.0}, and no clear scaling law can be found for -ω(0)/ω(i)=0 (inner cylinder rotation only); the local scaling exponent of the spectra has a strong frequency dependence. We relate these observations to the shape of the probability density function of the azimuthal velocity and the presence of a neutral line.
Reconciling the Reynolds Number Dependence of Scalar Roughness Length and Laminar Resistance

Abstract:The scalar roughness length and laminar resistance are necessary for computing scalar fluxes in numerical simulations and experimental studies. Their dependence on flow properties such as the Reynolds number remains controversial. In particular, two important power laws (“1/4” and “1/2”), both having strong theoretical foundations, have been widely used in various parameterizations and models. Building on a previously proposed phenomenological model for interactions between the viscous sublayer and the turbulent flow, it is shown here that the two scaling laws can be reconciled. The 1/4 power law corresponds to the situation where the vertical diffusion is balanced by the temporal change or advection due to a constant velocity in the viscous sublayer, while the 1/2 scaling corresponds to the situation where the vertical diffusion is balanced by the advection due to a linear velocity profile in the viscous sublayer. In addition, the recently proposed “1” power law scaling is also recovered, which corresponds to the situation where molecular diffusion dominates the scalar budget in the viscous sublayer. The formulation proposed here provides a unified framework for understanding the onset of these different scaling laws and offers a new perspective on how to evaluate them experimentally.
Velocity Profiles in Strongly Turbulent Taylor-Couette Flow

Abstract:We derive the velocity profiles in strongly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow for the general case of independently rotating cylinders. The theory is based on the Navier-Stokes equations in the appropriate (cylinder) geometry. In particular, we derive the axial and the angular velocity profiles as functions of distance from the cylinder walls and find that both follow a logarithmic profile, with downwards-bending curvature corrections, which are more pronounced for the angular velocity profile as compared to the axial velocity profile, and which strongly increase with decreasing ratio η between inner and outer cylinder radius. In contrast, the azimuthal velocity does not follow a log-law. We then compare the angular and azimuthal velocity profiles with the recently measured profiles in the ultimate state of (very) large Taylor numbers. Though the qualitative trends are the same – down-bending for large wall distances and the (properly shifted and non-dimensionalized) angular velocity profile ω+(r) being closer to a log-law than the (properly shifted and non-dimensionalized) azimuthal velocity profile \documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\begin{document}$u^+_{\varphi }(r)$\end{document}uφ+(r) – quantitativedeviations are found for large wall distances. We attribute these differences to the nonlinear dependence of the turbulent ω-diffusivity on the wall distance and partly also to the Taylor rolls and the axial dependence of the profiles, neither of which are considered in the theoretical approach. Assuming that the first origin is the most relevant one, we calculate from the experimental profile data how the turbulent ω-diffusivity depends on the wall distance and find a linear behavior for small wall distances as assumed and a saturation behavior for very large distances, reflecting the finite gap width: But in between the ω-diffusivity increases stronger than linearly, reflecting that more eddies can contribute to the turbulent transport (or they contribute more efficiently) as compared to the plane wall case.
Direct Numerical Simulations of Local and Global Torque in Taylor-Couette Flow up to Re=30.000

Abstract:The torque in turbulent Taylor-Couette flows for shear Reynolds numbers Re_S up to 3x10^4 at various mean rotations is studied by means of direct numerical simulations for a radius ratio of \eta=0.71. Convergence of simulations is tested using three criteria of which the agreement of dissipation values estimated from the torque and from the volume dissipation rate turns out to be most demanding. We evaluate the influence of Taylor vortex heights on the torque for a stationary outer cylinder and select a value of the aspect ratio of \Gamma=2, close to the torque maximum. The connection between the torque and the transverse current J^\omega of azimuthal motion which can be computed from the velocity field enables us to investigate the local transport resulting in the torque. The typical spatial distribution of the individual convective and viscous contributions to the local current is analysed for a turbulent flow case. To characterise the turbulent statistics of the transport, PDF's of local current fluctuations are compared to experimental wall shear stress measurements. PDF's of instantaneous torques reveal a fluctuation enhancement in the outer region for strong counter-rotation. Moreover, we find for simulations realising the same shear Re_S>=2x10^4 the formation of a torque maximum for moderate counter-rotation with angular velocities \omega_o\approx-0.4\omega_i. In contrast, for Re_S<=4x10^3 the torque features a maximum for a stationary outer cylinder. In addition, the effective torque scaling exponent is shown to also depend on the mean rotation state. Finally, we evaluate a close connection between boundary-layer thicknesses and the torque.

Structure and interpolation of the turbulent velocity profile in parallel flow

Abstract:The classical scaling theory of turbulent parallel flow provides a framework for the description of the mean velocity profile through two functions of one variable, traditionally named law of the wall and law of the wake, and a universal logarithmic law characterized by von Kármán’s constant. Despite its widespread adoption in research and in teaching, discrepancies between this theory and both experiments and numerical simulations have been repeatedly observed in the literature. Recently we have shown that in the logarithmic layer such discrepancies can be physically interpreted and analytically accounted for through an equally universal correction caused by the pressure gradient. This finding opens the way to a likewise improvement in the description of the law of the wall and of the law of the wake, an analytical interpolation of either of which is often useful for practical applications. With such techniques smaller Reynolds numbers, R e τ ≳ 400 , become consistent with the logarithmic law than were before, and the results of direct numerical simulations can be manipulated in a way that yields estimates of the log-law constants consistent across geometries and consistent with much higher-Reynolds-number experiments. Even more accurate estimates can be within reach in the future if the accuracy of such simulations is improved without necessarily increasing their Reynolds number.

Abstract:A three-layer asymptotic structure for turbulent pipe flow is proposed, revealing in terms of intermediate variables, the existence of a Reynolds-number invariant logarithmic region. It provides a theoretical foundation for addressing important questions in the scaling of the streamwise mean velocity and variance. The key insight emerging from the analysis is that the scale separation between two adjacent layers is proportional to $\sqrt{Re_{\tau}}$, rather than $Re_{\tau}$. This suggests that, in order to realise Reynolds-number asymptotic invariance, much higher Reynolds numbers may be necessary to achieve sufficient scale separation. The formulation provides a theoretical basis for explaining the presence of a power law for the mean velocity in pipe flow at low Reynolds numbers and the co-existence of power and log laws at higher Reynolds numbers. Furthermore, the Townsend-Perry `constant' for the variance is shown to exhibit a systematic Reynolds-number dependence.

Generalized Scaling of the Turbulence Structure in Wall-Bounded Flows

Abstract:Scaling of the Reynolds stresses has been sought by many researchers, since it provides a template of universal dynamical patterns across a range of Reynolds numbers. Various statistical and normalization schemes have been attempted, but without complete or convincing similarity properties. Our prior work on the transport processes in wall-bounded flows point toward self-similarity in the gradient space, where the first and second derivatives of the Reynolds stress components exhibit universal scaling across the entire boundary layer. This scaling is extendable to compressible flows. Finally, a universal, integral scaling for the mean velocity profiles is discovered and presented.

Abstract:The symmetry-based turbulence theory has been used to derive new scaling laws for the streamwise velocity and temperature moments of arbitrary order. For this, it has been applied to an incompressible turbulent channel flow driven by a pressure gradient with a passive scalar equation coupled in. To derive the scaling laws, symmetries of the classical Navier-Stokes and the thermal energy equations have been used together with statistical symmetries, i.e., the statistical scaling and translation symmetries of the multipoint moment equations. Specifically, the multipoint moments are built on the instantaneous velocity and temperature fields other than in the classical approach, where moments are based on the fluctuations of these fields. With this instantaneous approach, a linear system of multipoint correlation equations has been obtained, which greatly simplifies the symmetry analysis. The scaling laws have been derived in the limit of zero viscosity and heat conduction, i.e., Reτ→∞ and Pr>1 , and they apply in the center of the channel, i.e., they represent a generalization of the deficit law, thus extending the work of Oberlack et al. [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 128 , 024502 (2022)]. The scaling laws are all power laws, with the exponent of the high moments all depending exclusively on those of the first and second moments. To validate the new scaling laws, the data from a large number of direct numerical simulations (DNS) for different Reynolds and Prandtl numbers have been used. The results show a very high accuracy of the scaling laws to represent the DNS data. The statistical scaling symmetry of the multipoint moment equations, which characterizes intermittency, has been the key to the new results since it generates a constant in the exponent of the final scaling law. Abstract: Highly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow with spanwise-varying roughness is investigated experimentally and numerically (direct numerical simulations (DNS) with an immersed boundary method (IBM)) to determine the effects of the spacing and axial width $s$ of the spanwise varying roughness on the total drag and {on} the flow structures. We apply sandgrain roughness, in the form of alternating {rough and smooth} bands to the inner cylinder. Numerically, the Taylor number is $\mathcal{O}(10^9)$ and the roughness width is varied between $0.47\leq \tilde{s}=s/d \leq 1.23$, where $d$ is the gap width. Experimentally, we explore $\text{Ta}=\mathcal{O}(10^{12})$ and $0.61\leq \tilde s \leq 3.74$. For both approaches the radius ratio is fixed at $\eta=r_i/r_o = 0.716$, with $r_i$ and $r_o$ the radius of the inner and outer cylinder respectively. We present how the global transport properties and the local flow structures depend on the boundary conditions set by the roughness spacing $\tilde{s}$. Both numerically and experimentally, we find a maximum in the angular momentum transport as function of $\tilde s$. This can be atributed to the re-arrangement of the large-scale structures triggered by the presence of the rough stripes, leading to correspondingly large-scale turbulent vortices.
