Abstract:Solar and nuclear power conversion process has been analyzed from the point of thermodynamic. The entropy of these two kinds of new power under ideal conditions has been calculated and their entropy generation in practical application has also been analyzed. By comparing the results of these two cases of analysis comes to a conclusion that solar power is cleaner than nuclear power and solar power plays an important role in environmental protection.

Abstract:Since nuclear power become one of the main energy sources in daily life, pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant has been widely utilized around the world. Meanwhile, as renewable energy, solar photovoltaic power and wind power have been regarded as important energy sources in the future. This paper proposes a numerical model based on the second law of thermodynamics to analyze the efficiency and the thermal emission of power generation system. Such model will be applied to analyze the man process of energy conversion in power generation system. It is proved that solar photovoltaic power and wind power are more environmentally friendly than nuclear power.

Abstract:C. N. Yang: We have just heard three speakers describing to us various problems which arise in theoretical and experimental high-energy physics, and in the designs of high-energy accelerators. The problem of the aims, prospects, and the impact of the whole enterprise is a very complex subject. I shall confine myself to a few remarks concerning the historical aspect of the subject. High-energy physics is a natural continuation of the traditional efforts by physicists to study the structure of matter. By all standards of comparison, I think we are not exaggerating when we say that achievements in this line of research have been most spectacular in the past sixty years. At the turn of the century, physicists, as we recall, were just looking at the structure of atoms. Thirty years later, the subject of studies progressed to atomic nuclei, and today we are looking at subnuclear constituents. The increase in energy is equally impressive; in fact, perhaps even more so. We have progressed from a few electron volts to millions of electron volts to today's multibillion electron volts. Reviewing the progress of the experimental techniques that have made possible these investigations, one is deeply impressed by the power and the ingenuity that were brought to bear at each stage of this development. With the greatly awakened interest in science in all nations, with the rapid progress of technology, there seems to be little doubt that new experimental techniques will be developed to meet every new challenge encountered in this enterprise. The impact of these developments on technology, on human affairs, and on other sciences has been important beyond description.

Abstract:In the 60s Professor Chen Ping Yang with Professor Chen Ning Yang published several seminal papers on the study of Bethe’s hypothesis for various problems of physics. The works on the lattice gas model, critical behavior in liquid–gas transition, the one-dimensional (1D) Heisenberg spin chain, and the thermodynamics of 1D delta-function interacting bosons are significantly important and influential in the fields of mathematical physics and statistical mechanics. In particular, the work on the 1D Heisenberg spin chain led to subsequent developments in many problems using Bethe’s hypothesis. The method which Yang and Yang proposed to treat the thermodynamics of the 1D system of bosons with a delta-function interaction leads to significant applications in a wide range of problems in quantum statistical mechanics. The Yang and Yang thermodynamics has found beautiful experimental verifications in recent years.

Abstract:Professor Chen Ning Yang has made seminal and influential contributions in many different areas in theoretical physics. This talk focuses on his contributions in statistical mechanics, a field in which Professor Yang has held a continual interest for over sixty years. His Master's thesis was on a theory of binary alloys with multi-site interactions, some 30 years before others studied the problem. Likewise, his other works opened the door and led to subsequent developments in many areas of modern day statistical mechanics and mathematical physics. He made seminal contributions in a wide array of topics, ranging from the fundamental theory of phase transitions, the Ising model, Heisenberg spin chains, lattice models, and the Yang-Baxter equation, to the emergence of Yangian in quantum groups. These topics and their ramifications will be discussed in this talk.

Abstract:Abstract Chen-Ning Yang ( ) is the most distinguished Chinese theoretical physicist. In 1954, together with Robert Mills, he formulated the Yang–Mills Gauge Theory, which led to the development of the Standard Model, the leading framework for understanding particle physics. In 1956, Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee ( ) proposed the possibility of parity non-conservation in weak interaction, which won them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957. Besides these two major achievements, Yang made many other seminal contributions to particle physics, statistical physics and condensed matter physics. At the end of 2003, Yang returned to China from the US and established the Institute for Advanced Study at Tsinghua University in Beijing. NSR’s Executive Editor-in-Chief Mu-ming Poo ( ), a neurobiologist, and Alexander Wu Chao ( ), an accelerator physicist at Stanford University, talked with Professor Yang on a variety of topics, ranging from his retrospective view on Yang–Mills theory, on his contemporary physicists, on tastes in scientific research, and on the current and future developments of Chinese science. The following is an excerpt from this conversation that took place on 21 March 2019 at Tsinghua University, Beijing.

Abstract:Due to the increasingly intensive impact of population growth and economy development,energy shortage is becoming more and more severe,so countries around the world are searching for substitutes for the fossil energy resources of coal,oil and gas.Nuclear fusion energy,characterized by its cleanness,high efficiency and inexhaustibility,is considered to be one of the most possible ways to solve the energy problem.This paper outlines the importance of the development of fusion energy and reviews the history of magnetic confinement fusion research,with a brief introduction to the progress of the international thermonuclear experimental reactor program and related research in China as well.The prospect of this strategy for China's nuclear energy development is given at the end.

Abstract:The 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson was a sensational triumph—the culmination of a 48-year-long search that put the finishing touches on the so-called “Standard Model” of particle physics. While the celebrations were still underway, researchers in China were making plans to continue the centuries-old quest to identify the fundamental building blocks of nature. More specifically, they began laying the groundwork for a giant accelerator—up to 100 kilometers in circumference—that would transport physics into a previously inaccessible, high-energy realm where a host of new particles, and perhaps a sweeping new symmetry, might be found. The case for such an instrument is compelling: Even though the Standard Model can describe the behavior of particles with astounding accuracy, it is incomplete. The theory has little to say about the Big Bang, gravity, dark matter, dark energy, and other far-reaching phenomena. This book explains how an ambitious new machine—on the scale of China’s proposed “Great Collider”—could provide us with a fuller understanding of the origins of our universe and its most basic constituents.

Abstract:There occurred in the early years of this century three conceptual revolutions that profoundly changed Man's understanding of the physical universe: the special theory of relativity (in 1905), the general theory of relativity (1915) and quantum mechanics (1925). Einstein personally was responsible for the first two of these revolutions, and influenced and helped to shape the third. But it is not about his work in these conceptual revolutions that I shall write here. Much has been written about that work already. Instead, I shall discuss, in general terms, Einstein's insights on the structure of theoretical physics and their relevance to the development of physics in the second half of this century. I shall divide the discussion into four sections which are, of course, very much related.

Abstract:Several important milestones and hot topics in nuclear physics researches are reviewed. The discoveries of the atomic nucleus and its components are introduced firstly, followed by the corresponding nuclear bulk properties, including the nuclear masses, and radii, and the establishment of the nuclear shell model based on these discoveries. By examining the spin-orbital potential leading to the nuclear shell model, the nuclear spin and pseudospin symmetries, are discussed. As one of the most important aspects in nuclear physics, the nuclear rotation excitation dated back to 1960s, is reviewed in detail. Finally the chances and challenges for nuclear physics in the twenty-first century are provided based on some selected hot topics and important issues in current nuclear physics frontiers.

Abstract:<p>Modern material science has been revolutionized by the discovery of novel topological states of quantum matter, which sheds new lights on solving long-standing scientific challenges. However, the exotic quantum phenomena are typically observable only in rare material systems under extreme experimental conditions. The search of suitable candidate materials that are able to work at ambient conditions is thus of crucial importance to both fundamental research and practical applications. Here we review our recent efforts on first-principles exploration of novel quantum physics and materials, focusing on emergent quantum phenomena induced by spin-orbit coupling and its interplay with magnetism, topology and superconductivity. The first-principles material design guided by fundamental theory enables the discoveries of several key quantum materials, including next-generation magnetic topological insulators, high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall and quantum spin Hall insulators, and unconventional superconductors. A closecollaboration with experiment not only successfully confirmed most of our theoretical predictions, but also led to surprising findings for further investigations, which greatly promotes development of the research field.</p>

The "Folk Theorem" on Effective Field Theory: How Does It Fare in Nuclear Physics?

Abstract:This is a brief history of what I consider as very important, some of which truly seminal, contributions made by young Korean nuclear theorists, mostly graduate students working on PhD thesis in 1990's and early 2000's, to nuclear effective field theory, nowadays heralded as the first-principle approach to nuclear physics. The theoretical framework employed is an effective field theory anchored on a scale-invariant hidden local symmetric Lagrangian constructed along the line of Weinberg's "Folk Theorem" on effective field theory. The problems addressed are the high-precision calculations on the thermal $np$ capture, the solar $pp$ fusion process, the solar $hep$ process -- John Bahcall's challenge to nuclear theorists -- and the quenching of $g_A$ in giant Gamow-Teller resonances and the whopping enhancement of first-forbidden beta transitions in astrophysical processes. Extending adventurously the strategy to a wild uncharted domain in which a systematic implementation of the "theorem" is far from obvious, the same effective Lagrangian is applied to the structure of compact stars. A surprising result on the properties of massive stars, totally different from what has been obtained up to day in the literature, is predicted, such as the precocious onset of conformal sound velocity together with the possible emergence of hidden symmetries such as scale symmetry and hidden local symmetry.
