Abstract:Self-pumped phase conjugation is experimentally studied in the usual 0 degrees -cut potassium niobate crystals doped with either manganese or cobalt. Phase-conjugate reflectivities as high as 52% and 32% are obtained for these two kinds of crystal in the mirrorless cat configuration at 488 nm. The influence of experimental conditions, such as the incidence angle, the incident position, and the incident intensity, on phase conjugation are studied.

Abstract:Self-pumped phase conjugate in trapezoid-cut Co-doped (KNa)0.1 (Sr0.75Ba0.25)0.9Nb2O6 (Co-KNSBN) crystal was demonstrated without external reflection mirrors and applied field, phase conjugation reflectivities as high as 40.5% were measured. The threshold power was lower than 0.02 W/cm2. The device was operated in one-region four-wave mixing using the photorefractive effect.

Abstract:The mutually pumped phase conjugate reflection induced by a self-pumped phase conjugate reflection of another mutually coherent beam has been demonstrated in a photorefractive Cu- doped KNSBN crystal. The dependence of the mutually pumped phase conjugate reflectivity on the intensity ratio of the two incident beams and on the incident position of the signal beam was measured. We obtain phase conjugate reflectivities of greater than 90% at 488 nm.

Abstract:In this letter, a new type of self-pumped phase conjugation (SPPC) is demonstrated and a phase conjugate reflectivity as high as 83.8% is measured in an unusually cut Fe-doped KTa1-xNbxO3 (KTN:Fe) crystal with a He-Ne laser. Some novel characteristics of this type of device are found, which may reduce the need for special crystal qualities to obtain SPPC. Finally, a possible mechanism is postulated to reasonably explain this type of SPPC.? 1995 American Institute of Physics.
Study on Phase Conjugate Characteristics of the Terbium-Copper-Doped Potassium Sodium Strontium Barium Niobate Crystal

Abstract:In this paper we demonstrate the phase conjugate characteristics of a Tb:Cu:KNSBN crystal, using the self-pumped phase conjugator, the bridge double phase conjugator and the coherently induced double phase conjugator. Respectively. The experimental results show that the Tb:Cu:KNSBN crystal has high "cat" self-pumped phase conjugate reflectivity, which is 57% at incident angle of 40 degrees and input intensity of 7.6 W/cm(2), and fast response. For the bridge double phase conjugator, two mutually incoherent e-polarized input beams enter the opposite crystal faces symmetrically with an included angle of 112 degrees. We measured the maximum phase conjugate transmissivity of 65% and the maximum phase conjugate reflectivity of higher than 250%. Moreover, we found that the temporal phase conjugate output varies with which input beam being blocked before the measurement. A peak reflectivity of as high as 300% was obtained when the beam ratio is 6.5. The Tb:Cu:KNSBN crystal has also been used to implement the coherently induced double phase conjugation and phase conjugate reflectivity similar to 320 has been obtained in a very large dynamic range of beam ratios.

Abstract:A new scheme of coherent mutually pumped phase conjugate (MPPC) reflection that depends on the formation of self-pumped phase conjugate reflection of another beam has been demonstrated in a Cu:KNSBN crystal. Abstract:Four sets of multireflection orders from cat self-pumped phase conjugators of Cu-doped (K0.5Na0.5)(0.2) (Sr0.75Ba0.25)(0.9)Nb2O6 (Cu:KNSBN) crystals are reported for the first time to our knowledge. The novel phenomenon of transient pulsation of the multireflection orders is observed and analyzed. The nonconjugate part accompanying the returning phase-conjugate beam is observed in the cat self-pumped phase conjugators of Cu:KNSBN and is analyzed by multireflections and two-wave mixing.

Abstract:Dramatic enhancement of the response rate of internal reflection self-pumped phase conjugators with Ce- and Mn-doped (K0.5Na0.5)0.2(Sr0.75Ba0.25)0.9Nb2O6 crystals is observed with an intermittent laser beam as the pumping beam. Analysis that involves charge carrier migration driven by a photoinduced electric field is given.

Abstract:The influence of four sets of multiple reflection waves from self-pumped phase conjugators with doped (K0.5Na0.5)(0.2)(Sr0.75Ba0.25)(0.9)Nb2O6 photorefractive crystals on the conjugation fidelity is analyzed in presence of pyroelectric effect and photovoltaic effect. Some proposals to improve the conjugation fidelity of a self-pumped phase conjugator are demonstrated. The multiple reflection waves and their dynamic features are observed and analyzed.

Abstract:We report a highly efficient self-pumped phase conjugation (SPPC) at near-infrared wavelengths with an undoped BaTiO3. A 80% SPPC reflectivity at 741 nm was achieved. We made a detailed investigation on the buildup process of the phase-conjugate signal. A possible mechanism for this highly efficient SPPC mirror is also discussed.

Abstract:We measure the transmission of near-infrared ps pulses through single CdTe nanowires. Benefitting from the strong light confinement and large effective nonlinearity of these nanowires, a significant spectral broadening of similar to 5 nm and nonlinear phase shift of a few pi due to self-phase modulation (SPM) is observed experimentally at coupled peak power of a dozen W with a propagating length down to several hundred grns. A nonlinear-index coefficient (n(2)) as high as (9.5 +/- 1.4) x 10(-17) m(2)/W at 1550 nm is extracted from transmission spectra, corresponding to a nonlinear parameter (gamma) of similar to 1050 W-1 m(-1). The simulations indicate a spectral broadening more than 1.5 gm in single nanowire when pumped by fs pulses in anomalous dispersion regime. The obtained results suggest that, CdTe nanowire is promising in developing ultracompact nonlinear optical devices for microphotonic circuits. Abstract:Photorefractive self-pumped phase conjugation (SPPC) behavoir is examined at 633 nm in cerium-doped barium titane crystals. A reflectivity as high as 86.8% is reported. The buildup times are an order of magnitude faster than the corresponding values in Co: BaTiO3 and Cu: KNSBN crystals with input powers. A possible mechanism responsible for the high self-pumped phase conjugation reflectivities in the negative incident angle range is discussed.

Abstract:A multistage four-wave mixing interaction region model resulting in self-pumped phase conjugation output of the incident beam is suggested to explain the experimental observations. The competition between forward and backward two-wave mixing is demonstrated and used to explain the formation of the mechanism. The backscattering beams from random noise beams may be amplified by contradirectional two-wave mixing selectively and act as pumped beams from our experimental observations under a laser entering the negative c face of copper-doped potassium sodium strontium barium niobate crystal. The phase conjugation reflectivity of as high as 33% is measured.

Abstract:The phase conjugate reflection of double signals, induced by the self-pumped phase conjugation, is demonstrated in a 16° cut Cu-doped potassium sodium strontium barium niobate (KNSBN) photorefractive crystal. The phase conjugate reflectivities of signals were measured versus the pump-signal beam ratio. A comparison was made between the signal's reflectivity with and without the presence of the other signal beam. The multi-region four-wave mixing model within the same crystal has been employed to explain the geometry performance and the experimental results.

Abstract:Photorefractive materials, such as BaTiO3, KNbO3, SBN, etc. are known to exhibit high nonlinearity at low optical intensities. High fidelity optical phase conjugation and various optical resonators have been demonstrated in a variety of photorefractive crystals.1 Most of these phase conjugators and oscillators are based on the transmission type of gratings, which are relatively slow depending on the kind of crystal and optical intensity used. Reflection gratings, on the other hand, have the potential to respond faster than the transmission grating because the photo-induced charges move much shorter distances in the photorefractive materials. Recently, a self-pumped phase conjugator based on the reflection gratings in KNbO3 has been demonstrated to achieve a millisecond response time.2 In this paper, we present a systematic study on the reflection-grating based two beam coupling, self-pumped phase conjugation and, for the first time, unidirectional ring oscillations in the Fe-KNbO3 crystal. Fast response time has been observed experimentally in both two beam coupling and unidirectional ring oscillation. Good phase conjugate fidelity has been achieved from the self-pumped phase conjugators.

Abstract:Potassium niobate (KNbO3) crystal is not only a ferroelectric with strong nonlinear optical properties, but also a very good electro-optical material. Its electro-optical coefficient Γ42=380pm/v, and related dielectric constant ε and refractive index n are 240 and 2.3 respectively, therefore the photorefractive figure of merit Q (=n3 Γ42/ε) =19.3 (pm/v) [1] is the largest one comparing with BaTiO3, SBN, BSO, LiNbO3, LiTaO3 and GaAs.

Abstract:The obvious influence of the internal photoinduced electric field on the formation of self-pumped phase conjugation in doped (K(0.5) Na(0.5))(0.2) (Sr(0.75) Ba(0.25))(0.9) Nb(2)O(6) crystals has been investigated with intermittent and continuous laser beams. An analysis is given that involves the migration of charge carriers driven by the photovoltaic (PV) and the pyroelectric (PY) electric field. Deviation from the optimal state of energy transfer owing to the PV effect and the self-adjusting of holograms owing to the PY field are the two important dominant processes in the self-pumped phase conjugator. The influence of the photoinduced electric field on the conjugation fidelity and the stability of the phase-conjugate output is also observed and analyzed. The bump feature of the two-wave mixing and the oscillating situation of the self-pumped phase conjugator are observed and are explained in view of the photoinduced internal field.
