Abstract:We present a new observation of photorefractive (PR) effects in bent-core nematic (BCN) liquid crystal (LC) materials, where two kinds of optical-induced gratings are demonstrated and compared in pure and surface-doped BCN systems. The experimental results showed that these two kinds of gratings exhibit distinctive different polarization-dependent and angular-dependent behaviors, respectively. Furthermore, we supplied the pure and surface-doped rodlike LC systems for comparison, which revealed that V shape molecular structure of BCN can produce charge carrier more efficiently than rodlike molecular structure does. Thus BCN materials can offer an exciting potential for optical information processing.

Abstract:KNbO3 crystals doped with Co have been grown by the Kyropoulos method. The density of Co ions in the crystal is about 100 parts in 106. The inhomogeneity of refractive index Δn < 10−5/cm. The ordinary dimensions of single-domain KNbO3:Co crystals are about 10 × 10 × 10 mm3. Photorefractlve properties of KNbO3:Co have been compared with those of KNbO3:Fe. It has been found that the photorefractive diffraction efficiency of KNbO3:Co crystal without being reduced is one order of magnitude larger than that of reduced KNbO3:Fe crystal. The two wave coupling intensity distribution with the change of entering direction of the laser beam has been measured, and the distribution curve has been given. Other photorefractive experiments are being carryied out, and the results will be reported.

Abstract:Anomalous photorefractive behaviors that cannot be explained by previous models are observed in doped KNSBN crystals. The space-charge field increases to its maximum value and then gradually decreases as the incident light intensity increases. The superlinear dependence of the response rate on intensity, i.e. (tau) -1 varies direct as Ix (x greater than 1), are obtained in a Co:KNSBN crystal. The nearly linear dependence of response rate on intensity is measured in heavy reduced Co:KNSBN crystal, in which the dark decay of space-charge field is much faster and the total amount of dark decay is also larger than another one. A new model of two types of carriers with two deep and two shallow traps is proposed to explain these results.

Abstract:Although the photorefractive properties of KTaNbO/sub 3/ (KTN) crystal, one of the first identified photorefractive crystals, have been investigated in more detail in recent years, its photorefractive diffraction dynamics have been rarely studied. However, these studies might be important for understanding the mechanism of the photorefractivity including the need for a complicated photorefractive model and the influences of the internal dc electric field induced during writing with an applied field. In this presentation, our experimental investigations of photorefractive diffraction dynamics during writing, reading and erasing in a cubic KTN crystal will be reported systematically. Here, we studied not only the diffraction from the first-order grating but also the diffraction from the second-order grating.<>

Abstract:We report the photorefractive properties of K3Li2−xNb5+xO15+2x crystals grown by the edge-defined, film-fed technique. The crystals with lithium/niobate ratio from 18.5/51.5 to 26/44 are grown and investigated by two-beam coupling technique. The crystal of composition K3Li1.783Nb5.687O16.61 exhibits an intensity coupling constant of 8 cm−1 and an effective trap density of 1.8×1022 m−3. The photorefractive majority carriers are electrons in as-grown crystals. The grating recording time and erasure time are 530 and 260 ms, respectively, at an intensity of 2 W/cm2.

Abstract:This paper reports a novel phenomenon in photorefractive rubidium doped potassium niobate crystals, two different two-beam coupling processes with opposite gain signs and two response time with a difference of two orders of magnitude are observed in a rubidium doped KNbO3 crystal. Which can be explained well by the electron-hole competition.

Abstract:We report our experimental studies on the photorefractive response of KNbO3 double doped with manganese and rubidium. Two-beam coupling response time of photorefractive potassium niobate crystals is 3 to 10 times improved by double doping manganese and rubidium, when compared with that of the KNbO3:Mn crystals, which have shown a strong photorefraction. The photorefractive two-beam coupling gain coefficient in such crystals remains almost the same as those in KNbO3:Mn, which is 3 times higher than that of KNbO3 doped with rubidium alone, which has a fast response time.

Abstract:We report experimental studies on the photorefractive response of KNbO3 doubly doped with manganese and rubidium, iron and rubidium, respectively Two-beam coupling response time in KNbO3:Mn:Rb is 3 to 10 times shorter while the two-beam coupling gain coefficient remains almost the same when compare with that in KNbO3:min. On the other hand, under similar conditions, two-beam coupling response time in KNbO3:Fe:Rb is 6 times faster than that in KNbO3:Fe.

Abstract:We investigate the absorption and photorefractive properties of Ce:BaTiO3 (cerium doped barium titanate) crystals. The absorption coefficient, electro-optic gain coefficient, and total effective trap density at wavelength 514.5 nm increase systematically with cerium doping concentration. The absorption and the electro-optic gain coefficients exhibit a dependence on the optical intensity. This indicates that there are at least two active photorefractive species. One of these crystals has the highest beam-coupling gain coefficient reported to date, γ=8.06 cm−1 for ordinarily polarized light. The response time of as-grown Ce:BaTiO3 with 15 ppm cerium is 220 ms at an intensity of 800 mW/cm2.

Abstract:The photorefractive properties of Cu doped KTa1-xNbxO3 have been studied by using two-wave mixing method. The diffraction efficiency reaches as high as 52% under an electric field. The dependences of diffraction efficiency on interference angles and applied fields have been studied. The maximum light induced index change is found to be 2.33 x 10(-5) and the photorefraction sensitivity calculated is 5 x 10(-6) cm2/J. Experimental results demonstrate that electrons are the dominant charge carriers.

Abstract:The dynamics of photorefractive diffraction in paraelectric KTa1−xNbxO3 crystals during writing, reading, and erasing have been studied systematically. Experimental observations related not only to the diffraction from the first-order photorefractive grating but also to that from the second-order photorefractive grating, and where a writing beam with spots smaller than, as well as larger than, the entrance surface of the crystal was used. All the complicated behaviors observed have been explained qualitatively. An electron-hole transport model and a nonequilibrium screening model have been applied, and the existence of an internal dc electric field induced during writing simultaneously by an optical field and an externally applied field has been suggested and demonstrated. The significant influence of this induced field is indicated.

Abstract:We report the observations of the decay processes of light-induced absorption in one undoped and two Ce-doped BaTiO3 crystals. Two decay times were found, they had not a strong dependence on intensity in our experiment. We present a model with two different shallow trap centers to explain the experimental results. The theoretical and experimental results agree well with each other. The light-induced absorption coefficients and decay times corresponding to the two shallow levels are also given.

Abstract:Based on the coupled mode theory for polarized waves inside crystals and the linearized band transport model for photorefractive effect, the analytical expression of the dynamic range parameter of a photorefractive crystal in a volume holographic memory was derived. The influence of the impurity doping level, oxidation-reduction state and geometric configuration of coupling beams on the dynamic range performance for LiNbO3:Fe and BaTiO3 crystals was discussed. For both crystals, it is found that the denser the donor concentration and the higher the oxidation level, the larger the maximum possible dynamic range.
Study on Phase Conjugate Characteristics of the Terbium-Copper-Doped Potassium Sodium Strontium Barium Niobate Crystal

Abstract:In this paper we demonstrate the phase conjugate characteristics of a Tb:Cu:KNSBN crystal, using the self-pumped phase conjugator, the bridge double phase conjugator and the coherently induced double phase conjugator. Respectively. The experimental results show that the Tb:Cu:KNSBN crystal has high "cat" self-pumped phase conjugate reflectivity, which is 57% at incident angle of 40 degrees and input intensity of 7.6 W/cm(2), and fast response. For the bridge double phase conjugator, two mutually incoherent e-polarized input beams enter the opposite crystal faces symmetrically with an included angle of 112 degrees. We measured the maximum phase conjugate transmissivity of 65% and the maximum phase conjugate reflectivity of higher than 250%. Moreover, we found that the temporal phase conjugate output varies with which input beam being blocked before the measurement. A peak reflectivity of as high as 300% was obtained when the beam ratio is 6.5. The Tb:Cu:KNSBN crystal has also been used to implement the coherently induced double phase conjugation and phase conjugate reflectivity similar to 320 has been obtained in a very large dynamic range of beam ratios.

Abstract:The Z-scan measurements for the non-centrosymmetric optical crystals {\beta}-BaTeMo2O9 (BTMO) were performed. The corresponding experiments were carried out using the 5 ns pulses of the second harmonic of a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser at the 532 nm wavelength. It was shown that the studied crystals possess promising third-order optical susceptibilities, which allow to use the crystal as optical limiters. The comparison with other oxide materials is presented. To clarify the origin of the observed effect, the electronic and optical properties of BTMO were calculated using the density functional theory (DFT)-based method. The performed calculations of the electronic and optical properties revealed certain peculiar features that can be suitable for the non-linear optical applications. The relation between the observed nonlinear optical features and the calculated band structure is emphasized. The values of the calculated band gap and refractive index for {\beta}-BaTeMo2O9 are also reported.

Abstract:Scintillation properties of $({\rm Zn}_{0.9} {\rm Pb}_{0.1})({\rm W}_{0.9} {\rm Mo}_{0.1}){\rm O}_4$ and $({\rm Zn}_{0.9} {\rm Cd}_{0.1})({\rm W}_{0.9} {\rm Mo}_{0.1}){\rm O}_4$ mixed crystals with doping of ${\rm Eu, Sm, Pr, Ce, Sc, Yt}$ and ${\rm Nb}$ are studied. Measurements of their light yields relative to pure ${\rm ZnWO}_4$ at room temperature, decay times and energy resolutions at 662 keV are presented. Emission spectra are obtained with ${}^{239}Pu$ source of alpha particles.

Abstract:Potassium niobate (KNbO3) crystal is not only a ferroelectric with strong nonlinear optical properties, but also a very good electro-optical material. Its electro-optical coefficient Γ42=380pm/v, and related dielectric constant ε and refractive index n are 240 and 2.3 respectively, therefore the photorefractive figure of merit Q (=n3 Γ42/ε) =19.3 (pm/v) [1] is the largest one comparing with BaTiO3, SBN, BSO, LiNbO3, LiTaO3 and GaAs.

Abstract:First-principles theory was used to design a potassium-doped lithium niobate single crystal. The structural, electronic, optical and ferroelectric properties of the potassium-doped LiNbO3 single crystal model have been investigated using a generalized gradient approximation within density functional theory. It was found that substitution with potassium drastically changed the optical and electronic nature of the crystal and that the band gap slightly decreases. A series of LiNbO3 single crystals doped with x mol% K (x = 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 mol%) were successfully grown using the Czochralski method. The crystals were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, UV-vis-infrared absorption spectroscopy and a ferroelectric property test. The experimental test results were consistent with the calculated predictions.
