Abstract:Micro-sized uniform square two-dimensional single crystalline ZnS thin nanosheets were prepared on a large scale. The ZnS thin nanosheets were grown via a simple solvothermal method using Zn(Ac)2 powder and SC(NH2)2 as the original reactant and ethylenediamine(en) as the solvent. The room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurement reveals that the as-prepared ZnS nanosheets have visible emission of 518.2nm within the range of green. XRD, TEM, HRTEM and TGA analysis were also carried out to characterize the product. The square single-crystal ZnS nanosheets with visible emission within the range of green may have great potential applications in nanodevices.

Abstract:A method to directly synthesize single crystalline CdS nanobelts has been developed. The advantages of the method in rapid synthesis within several minutes and catalyst free comparing to the previous method propose a potential avenue to the further practical device production and applications. The as-synthesized CdS nanobelts grow along the [100] crystalline direction with usually 500–2000nm in width and about tens to several hundred micrometers in length. Two luminescence peaks around 516 and 758nm in room-temperature photoluminescence spectrum are ascribed to the band-to-band and trap emission, respectively.

Abstract:ZnS nanoparticles and one-dimensional nanocrystals were obtained by in-situ synthesis in Aa-AMPS-hT ternary periodic copolymer by ion complexometry and self-assembly method. The micro-morphology, structure and optical properties were characterized by TEM, SED, UV-vis spectra and PL spectra. The results show that the products are hexagonal ZnS nanocrystals with 15 nm-215 nm in diameter. The morphology and dimension of ZnS nanoparticles could be controlled by varying the sulfaration time. The UV-vis absorption spectra indicate that the absorption edges are blue-shifted by shortening the sulfuration time, exhibiting a marked quantum size effect. With shortening sulfuration time, the photoluminescence emission peak of 409.8 nm is blue-shifted, which could be ascribed to be the forbidden gap emission.

Abstract:In this study, we present the synthesis and characterization of ZnS nanobelt/ZnO nanoparticle heterostructures by the metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) method. On the basis of TEM results, the ZnO nanoparticles epitaxially grew on the (100) surface of the ZnS nanobelts, sharing the same orientation with the ZnS nanobelt along [210] and [001] directions, respectively. The as-prepared ZnS/ZnO nano-heterostructures exhibit an important feature of single-crystallinity. At room temperature, the ZnS nanobelt/ZnO nanoparticle heterostructures show one strong green emission and two weak violet emissions, which come from the ZnS and ZnO component, respectively. This study will give us some inspiration for the construction of high quality nano-heterostructures.

Abstract:A carbothermal. method combined with CVD has been developed to synthesize ZnS nanowires and their self-assemblies at low temperatures. In this process, active carbon serves as reductant to react with sulfur, which then goes on to form ZnS nanowires. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies indicate that the samples are single-crystal wurtzite ZnS and are rich in sulfur. The nanowires have diameters ranging from 20 to 60 nm. High-resolution electron microscopy shows the [100] growth direction for the monodispersed nanowires and the different crystal orientation for the nanowires constituting the assembly. The photoluminescence (PL) peak is located at 490 nm. A vapor-solid (VS) mechanism might-explain the formation of ZnS nanowires. (C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH Co.

Abstract:Single-crystalline wurtzite ZnS nanobelts were synthesized by the VPT process for the first time in the presence of Au catalyst on the Si substrates. Each ZnS nanobelt is fairly straight. The ZnS nanobelts are 50-100 mum in length, 150-600 nm in width and 3- 10 in ratio of the width to the thickness. The crystalline directions along the length and the width dimensions of the ZnS nanobelts are perpendicular to [2 (11) over bar0] and make angles within the range 0degrees-15degrees to [01 (1) over bar0] and [0001] crystalline directions, respectively. Strong near-band-edge emission at 344 nm was detected.

Abstract:We have demonstrated an effective approach for the synthesis of single-crystalline ZnS nanobelts possessing sharp UV emission at RT via right selection of source materials and controlling their evaporation and agglomeration rates. Individual ZnS nanobelt-based UV-light sensors were fabricated, these showed a high potential as visible-blind UV photodetectors and ultra-fast optoelectronic switches. The sensor characteristics, including a spectral response, I-V curves under various light illuminations, and a time response were studied. The photoresponsivity of an individual ZnS nanobelt-based UV sensor exhibited over three orders of magnitude gain under the UV light illumination as compared to a visible light. The high spectral selectivity combined with high photosensitivity and fast time response (< 0.3 s) make the present single-crystalline ZnS nanobelts particularly valuable for new Â¿visible-blindÂ¿ UV photodetectors, especially in the UV-A region.

Abstract:ZnS nanobelts with a pure wurtzite phase have been synthesized by a thermal evaporation method with the assistance of H2S in an Ar atmosphere. Photoluminescence band centered at about 535nm has been observed under excitation in the range of 250–480nm with decay rate as short as 860ps. The origin of this intense photoluminescence is related to elemental sulfur species on the surface of the ZnS nanobelts. This assignment is substantiated by structural analysis by high-resolution electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence and excitation technique. ZnS nanobelts with intense surface photoluminescence could be used as effective green light emitters, humid sensors, and UV light detectors.

Abstract:Single-crystalline, narrow-size-distribution ultrafine ZnS nanobelts (see figure), revealing a notable quantum-confinement effect, have been synthesized at a high yield by controlling the evaporation and agglomeration rates. Field-emission measurements show ultrafine ZnS nanobelts are very good field emitters with a low turn-on field and high field-enhancement factor.

Abstract:Semiconducting ZnO nanobelts have been fabricated by carbothermal reduction process using ZnO powders mixed with graphite as starting materials at a temperature of 900 °C. SEM, TEM images and SAED show that the nanobelts are pure, thin, uniform, and single-crystalline. One strong green-light emission peak at 500 nm was observed.

Abstract:Large-scale ZnO nanobelts in aligned fashion have been prepared via a simply conducted low temperature evaporation route using the oxidization of metallic zinc plates at 450±10 °C under ambient pressure. The produced nanobelt array has been structurally characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The microscope images show that the nanobelts are about 120-micron long, ranging on average from 80 to 160 micron, with about 30 nm in thickness. In addition to XRD, high-resolution TEM images and electron-diffraction patterns show that the nanobelts are single crystalline with wurtzite structure and mostly grow along the [0001] direction. The photoluminescence spectra of the single nanobelts show that the nanobelts have a dominant near-band-edge emission at about 388 nm with a very weak defect emission band centered at about 514 nm.

Abstract:ZnS nanocombs were fabricated via a two-step growth method. By annealing Au coated ZnS nanobelts with the help of SnO2/C, comb-like nanostructures would be formed. In the absence of SnO2/C, Au coated ZnS nanobelts would be evaporated completely at the same temperature. As revealed by high resolution transmission microscopy, the growth direction of the ZnS nanobelts was [210] while that of the branches was [001], which epitaxially grew on the (00 +/- 1) side surfaces of the ZnS nanobelts. Self-evaporation was used to explain the formation of the ZnS nanocombs. Photoluminescence spectrum reveals that the ZnS nanocombs had two emission bands at 570 and 635 nm.

Abstract:This manuscript presents the preparation and characterization of ZnO/ZnS nanostructured materials through sulfuration conversion from ZnO nanorods by a simple chemical synthesis. ZnO nanorods are synthesized by SDS-assisted hydrothermal growth. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques are used to characterize the ZnO nanorods and the novel ZnO/ZnS nanocomposites. The results show that the ZnO nanorods are wurtzite crystal structure and the ZnS nanoparticles are sphalerite structure with the average size of about 10nm grown on the surface of the ZnO nanorods. The measurements of the optical properties reveal that ZnO/ZnS nanocomposites have integrated the photoluminescent effect of ZnO and ZnS. Comparing to the bare ZnO nanorods with the ultraviolet, blue and green emissions of the ZnO/ZnS nanocomposites are dramatically enhanced, while the orange emission is passivated. In addition, the growth mechanism of ZnO/ZnS nanocomposites is discussed preliminarily.

Abstract:Semiconductor single-crystal ZnS nanowires have been successfully synthesized in bulk quantities by a new, simple and low cost process based on thermal evaporation of ZnS powders onto a silicon substrate with the presence of Au catalyst. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) observations show that the ZnS nanowires have diameters about 30–60 nm and lengths up to several tens micrometers. The growth of ZnS nanowires is controlled by the conventional vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) mechanism. And the photoluminescence (PL) properties of these synthesized single-crystal ZnS nanowires have been presented in this Letter.

Abstract:At a low temperature of 450 degrees C, ZnS nanoribbons have been synthesized on Si and KCl substrates by a simple chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method with a two-temperature-zone furnace. Zinc and sulfur powders are used as sources in the different temperature zones. X-ray diffraction (XRD), selected area electron diffraction (SEAD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis show that the ZnS nanoribbons are the wurtzite structure, and there are two types-single-crystal and bicrystal nanoribbons. Photoluminescence (PL) spectrum shows that the spectrum mainly includes two parts: a purple emission band centering at about 390 nm and a blue emission band centering at about 445 mn with a weak green shoulder around 510 nm.

Abstract:A large quantity of single-crystal Zn2SnO4 (ZTO) nanobelts is synthesized by using a thermal evaporation method. The lengths of the nanobelts are up to several hundreds of micrometers, and the average width and thickness are about 400 and 30 nm, respectively. Some ring-like nanobelts, called nanorings here, are also observed. The nanobelts are characterized in detail with scanning electron microscope, X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscope and selected area electron diffraction. Possible growth mechanisms for the ZTO nanobelts and nanorings are proposed. In addition, the photoluminescence spectrum (PL) of the nanobelts at room temperature shows a stable broad blue–green emission around the 400–600 nm wavelengths with a maximum center at 490 nm. The strong PL emission of the nanobelts may find potential applications in nano-scale optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:High-quality nanostructured ZnxCd1-xS has been synthesized through a method of two-step thermal evaporation. The typical morphologies of the nanomaterials were investigated by SEM and TEM. The first step of synthesis is the preparation of ZnS nanoribbons. With ZnS nanoribbons being used as templates, a series of wurtzite ZnxCd1-xS (x = 0.47, 0.70, 0.77, 0.85, and 0.94) nanobelts can be produced. Furthermore, by adopting ZnS nanoribbons of a particular width, ZnxCd1-xS nanobelts of a desired width can be fabricated. In XRD analysis, we find that with an increase in Zn content (x), the peaks corresponding to the wurtzite structures shift to larger 2 theta. As a deduction based on Vegard's law, the ZnxCd1-xS are solid solutions of similar crystal structure. The results of H RTEM and SAED investigations reveal that the ZnS nanoribbons and ZnxCd1-xS nanobelts grow along the (10 (1) over bar0) direction. With an increase in Zn content, we observe a gradual blue shift of photoluminescence emission (from 443 to 352 nm), further indicating the homogeneity of the ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. After proper thermal annealing, there is better crystallinity of ZnxCd1-xS and higher specificity of near-band emission.
Bifilar Helix-Like Nanobelt of Single Crystalline Zn2sno4 Fabricated by Aluminothermal Reaction Approach

Abstract:This paper reports the preparation in large quantity of bifilar helix-like nanobelts of single crystalline Zn2SnO4, a face-centered cubic spinet and transparent semiconductor that possesses wide applications in photovoltaic devices and sensors for humidity and combustible gases, by using a unique approach that combines chemical vapor deposition, aluminothermal reaction, vapor-liquid-solid growth, mergence of polar plane, and kinetic control by steady-state turbulent flow. The bifilar helix-like nanobelt was formed by the twisting and merging of two independent Zn2SnO4 nanobelts, as analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence. It had a periodicity along the axial direction and hence, is actually a super-lattice material. The photoluminescence measurements showed a strong light emission at 326.1 nm from the as-prepared sample with a line width of about 1.5 nm. The combined approach used in this study, in particular its aluminothermal reaction and steady-state turbulent gas flow perturbation steps, may be helpful in preparing other similar materials.

Abstract:ZnS, ZnS:Cu and ZnS/CdS nanocrystals were synthesized in polymer matrices with a variety of methods. TEM, absorption spectra and small-angle X-ray scattering studies showed that the particle sizes of ZnS, ZnS:Cu and ZnS/CdS nanocrystals were 3.0, 3.2 and 2.0nm respectively. Electron diffraction results showed that the ZnS and CdS nanocrystals have the hexagonal structures and Cu ions existed in ZnS with the form of Cu2S. A hole transport material tetraphenylbenzidine(TPB) were also doped into ZnS nanocrystals/polymer to improve the electroluminescent(EL) property of the ZnS nanocrystals. ZnS:Cu, ZnS/CdS and TPB/ZnS nanoparticles/polymer composite as emitters were used to fabricate a single layer structure light-emitting diode between ITO and Al electrodes respectively The photoluminescent and EL properties of these doped systems were studied. These EL devices had low turn on voltage(less than or equal to 4V) and the blue electroluminesence from Cu:ZnS and ZnS/CdS and a violet-blue electroluminescence from TPB:ZnS were observed respectively at room temperature under ambient air. The EL mechanism is also discussed.
