Abstract:Image Analysis Technique(IAT) was developed at 1950's, which quantifies the changing all the part of image by sampling, processing, quantifying, computing, analyzing the information of image. And now it has become a normal quantifying technique in biology and medicine research. In the present paper, we reviewed briefly the principium of quantifying the DNA content by IAT, the law of degradation of DNA in nucleus and the foreground of this method in determining PMI in forensic pathology.

Abstract:Forensic imaging is a non-invasive examination process during the forensic investigation. It is mainly used in forensic pathology as an adjunct to the traditional autopsy. In the past two decades, forensic imaging has been vigorously developed by forensic experts from computed tomography (CT) to multiple augmented techniques through CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The application field of forensic imaging has also been broadened as its advantages are recognised by more forensic practitioners. In addition to the forensic pathology, this technique has been used in other forensic disciplines, including forensic anthropology, forensic odontology, forensic ballistics and wildlife forensics, etc. This article reviews the development of forensic imaging as the practice and research development in different forensic disciplines based on the relevant literature analysis.

Abstract:Confocal laser scanning microscopy(CLSM) is a new technique for microscopic imaging, which can collect the transverse section image of the samples and produce three-dimensional reconstruction and present higher spatial resolution than the conventional light microscope. As a precision instrument for the microscopic image, it plays an important role in forensic pathology. The article reviews the recent research achievements from sudden cardiac death, bullet wound and nervous system damage, etc, and explores the potential applications of the forensic pathology research and forensic practice.

Abstract:Postmortem imaging (PMI) technology known as virtual autopsy or virtopsy is regarded as a useful method of noninvasive or minimally invasive autopsy in forensic practice. Postmortem computed tomography is applicable to traumatic investigation, acute hemorrhage, pulmonary parenchyma disease, calcification (calculus, atherosclerosis), and gas accumulation. Postmortem magnetic resonance (PMMR) has been proven to have advantages in soft tissue identification. Cardiac death is one of the keys and difficult points in forensic practice. With the introduction and development of PMCT angiography and PMMR, it was proved to be a very promising tool in the investigation of cardiac death, including vascular cavities and ischemic myocardium. This article reviewed the applications of the latest PMI and its related technologies in forensic cardiac pathology, including advantages, limitations, and development prospects.

Abstract:As a rising histological specimen carrier,digital slide has advantages of easy search and fast browse.By digital scanning and stitching of traditional slides and uploading traditional slides as well as pathological information to network servers,the construction of digital slides data can take its own superiority to assist forensic medicine teaching.Combined with our research and teaching experience,this article discussed the application prospects of digital slide technology and digital slides data so as to provide references for the improvement and reformation of forensic medicine education.

Abstract:Virtual autopsy (VIRTOPSY) is a non-invasive examination for forensic practice. It can objectively and accurately reflect fractures, soft tissue injuries, wound extent, and organ damage and provides intuitive and powerful court evidence for forensic identification. In recent years, Chinese scholars have investigated the application of VIRTOPSY in forensic analysis of cause of death by collecting cadaveric imaging data representing different causes of death, including falls from height, traffic accidents, burning, drowning, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular accidents. A cadaver imaging database was initially established. These efforts have promoted the development and application of VIRTOPSY in Chinese forensic practice. In this article, we reviewed some papers published in recent years in forensic science journals domestic and abroad to show the present VIRTOPSY by postmortem multi-slice computed tomography (PMCT) applications in china for forensic pathology.

Abstract:Virtopsy employs computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, which are commonly used in clinical medicine, to determine the cause and manner of death. Virtopsy is a multidisciplinary technique that combines forensic medicine, pathology, radiology, computer graphics, biomechanics, and physics. Virtopsy is rapidly gaining importance in forensic science and has been extensively studied in several areas of forensic pathology. In this study, we reviewed domestic and international research on causes of death, traffic injuries, medical disputes, gunshot trauma, postmortem changes, and inference of time of death to discuss with colleagues the role of virtopsy in forensic pathology.

Abstract:The advent of whole-slide imaging, faster image data generation, and cheaper forms of data storage have made it easier for pathologists to manipulate digital slide images and interpret more detailed biological processes in conjunction with clinical samples. In parallel, with continuous breakthroughs in object detection, image feature extraction, image classification and image segmentation, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming the most beneficial technology for high-throughput analysis of image data in various biomedical imaging disciplines. Integrating digital images into biological workflows, advanced algorithms, and computer vision techniques expands the biologist’s horizons beyond the microscope slide. Here, we introduce recent developments in AI applied to microscopy in hematopathology. We give an overview of its concepts and present its applications in normal or abnormal hematopoietic cells identification. We discuss how AI shows great potential to push the limits of microscopy and enhance the resolution, signal and information content of acquired data. Its shortcomings are discussed, as well as future directions for the field.

Abstract:Digital multimedia forensics is an emerging research field of information security.The research on digital multimedia forensics is important to ensure the credibility of digital multimedia data.Using digital image forensics as an example,the authors reviewed the current digital multimedia forensics techniques from the five aspects,including tamper detection,source device identification,authenticity verification,device component forensics,and the reliability of digital multimedia forensics.The authors focused on introducing typical algorithms,and meanwhile,pointed out the main problems in the current research and suggested the urgent topics for the future research.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES:To investigate the value of optical coherence tomography （OCT） in the diagnosis of coronary atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction in forensic identification.METHODS:OCT and hematoxylin-eosin （HE） examination were performed to examine the pathological samples of coronary artery and myocardial infarction in 5 cases of sudden coronary death. The morphological and local measurement indexes were compared.RESULTS:In the OCT images, the layers of coronary artery could be distinguishably featured, and the atheroma plaques had a good morphological correspondence with HE slices. The normal myocardia in the OCT image showed weak light signals with high absorbance, while the fiber scar tissues in the myocardial infarction areas showed strong light signals with low absorbance. There were no significant differences on the fibrous cap thickness in coronary atherosclerotic plaques or intima-media thickness between the OCT images and the HE slices （P>0.05）. In the OCT images, the optical densities of the old myocardial infarction areas （1 226.24±622.66） and those of normal myocardia （3 707.90±962.98） were significantly different （ P<0.05）.CONCLUSIONS:The OCT image has a good morphological consistency with HE slice, thus is expected to be the primary screening method for the forensic pathology examination of coronary artery atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction, which can help to improve the diagnostic accuracy.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduced the state-of-the-art techniques for digital image forensic authentication. A novel system was presented which consisted of the advanced tools for digital image forensic authentication. The tools offered in the system had the functions including the image file header analysis, device identification, re-compression analysis, copy-paste detection, resampling analysis, etc. The system performance has been tested under practical cases of forensic image examination. The experimental data and results have proven the advancement of the proposed system which could be widely applied in forensic image examination and other forensic applications.

Abstract:ABSTRACT:Individual identification based on imaging data of the skeleton of a corpse is a key technique for forensic identification. To reduce the influence of artificial factors, computer-aided semi-automatic or automatic individual identification has become one of the research directions of skeleton-based individual identification in forensic radiology. Therefore, this paper reviews and summarizes literatures related to estimation of anthropological information such as, age and sex by computer-aided forensic radiology bone characteristics and individual identification based on bone imaging characteristics, in order to provide reference on skeleton-based individual identification in forensic radiology.

Methods: The related literatures were searched with the keywords of "Computer - aided diagnosis" and "Breast cancer" and the classification was reviewed. Results: The CAD technique of breast cancer has become one of the research hotspots in the field of medical imaging. The application of mammography CAD in the diagnosis of breast cancer is reviewed. Conclusion: Although the application of CAD in China is stil in its infancy, it is a very important subject to study the diagnosis of breast cancer by CAD system.

Abstract:With the development of information technology, digital pathology, including image analysis, and automatic diagnosis of pathological tissue, has developed remarkably. It has become possible to recognize and quantify histopathological features using artificial intelligence (AI). We have attempted to analyze and quantify various histopathological findings using image processing software. In this report, we introduce the latest results of recognition and quantification of various pathological findings in the liver, kidney, and lung using image processing software, including Image-Pro Plus, Tissue Studio, and HALO. HALO is an image analysis platform specialized for the study of pathological tissues, which enables tissue segmentation by using AI. Using HALO, histopathological changes, which are difficult or impossible to analyze with conventional image analysis, could be easily, and accurately analyzed. Quantification of pathological findings by image analysis can contribute to improve objectivity, precision, and persuasiveness of pathological evaluation. Quantification of morphological changes of histopathological findings using digital pathology including AI in robust pathology is a new and innovative evaluation technique. In the future, a versatile and useful tool is expected to enable faster and more efficient pathological evaluation in both non-clinical and clinical fields.

Abstract:Diatom examinations have been widely used to perform drowning diagnosis in forensic practice. However, current methods for recognizing diatoms, which use light or electron microscopy, are time-consuming and laborious and often result in false positive or negative decisions. In this study, we demonstrated an artificial intelligence (AI)-based system to automatically identify diatoms in conjunction with a classical chemical digestion approach. By employing transfer learning and data augmentation methods, we trained convolutional neural network (CNN) models on thousands or tens of thousands of tiles from digital whole-slide images of diatom smears. The results showed that the trained model identified the regions containing diatoms in the tiles. In an independent test, where the slide samples were collected in forensic casework, the best CNN model demonstrated a performance competitive with those of 5 forensic pathologists with experience in diatom quantification. This pilot study paves the way for future intelligent diatom examinations; many efficient diatom extraction methods could be incorporated into our automated system.
