Abstract:Forensic imaging is a non-invasive examination process during the forensic investigation. It is mainly used in forensic pathology as an adjunct to the traditional autopsy. In the past two decades, forensic imaging has been vigorously developed by forensic experts from computed tomography (CT) to multiple augmented techniques through CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The application field of forensic imaging has also been broadened as its advantages are recognised by more forensic practitioners. In addition to the forensic pathology, this technique has been used in other forensic disciplines, including forensic anthropology, forensic odontology, forensic ballistics and wildlife forensics, etc. This article reviews the development of forensic imaging as the practice and research development in different forensic disciplines based on the relevant literature analysis.

Abstract:Forensic dentistry is an interdiscipline of forensic medicine and stomatology, which provides legal information by collecting, testing and assessing the dental evidence scientifically. In this review, the present application of forensic dentistry has been described, such as the estimation of age, sex, species, occupation and living habit, as well as the identification of individual, domestic violence or abuse, which aims to enrich and improve forensic dentistry for making it be more useful in forensic medicine even in juridical practice.

Abstract:Forensic Archeology is the application of techniques and principles of archeology in the pursuit of examining a crime or incident with legal interest. A wide range of analytical studies are employed in examining archeological remains. X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy remains to be one of the most used techniques for rapid examination of trace evidence typically found on an archeological crime scene. Studies of interest generally include finding trace elements from various sources, samples, and different environmental conditions and distinguishing whether a skeletal remains under examination is human, animal, or marine species. The present study has been designed to focus on the application of XRF in archeological and anthropological evidences such as the examination of human skeletal and dental remains, determination of species, examination of soil, ceramics, paintings, coins, and so on. The advantage of XRF as derived from the reported literature is that it is a non‐destructive technique making it ideal for forensic analysis and in situ examination. The study also discusses the factors affecting forensic investigations of archeological evidences and the limitations of XRF.

Abstract:ABSTRACT:Individual identification based on imaging data of the skeleton of a corpse is a key technique for forensic identification. To reduce the influence of artificial factors, computer-aided semi-automatic or automatic individual identification has become one of the research directions of skeleton-based individual identification in forensic radiology. Therefore, this paper reviews and summarizes literatures related to estimation of anthropological information such as, age and sex by computer-aided forensic radiology bone characteristics and individual identification based on bone imaging characteristics, in order to provide reference on skeleton-based individual identification in forensic radiology.

Abstract:Technology of functional magnetic resonance imaging of brain (FMRIB) is a new approach developed in the resent years. It can not only show clearly and accurately the changes of tissues, autopsy and pathology of the brain, but also show the information of the activity of the brain in time without harm. Abstract:Confocal laser scanning microscopy(CLSM) is a new technique for microscopic imaging, which can collect the transverse section image of the samples and produce three-dimensional reconstruction and present higher spatial resolution than the conventional light microscope. As a precision instrument for the microscopic image, it plays an important role in forensic pathology. The article reviews the recent research achievements from sudden cardiac death, bullet wound and nervous system damage, etc, and explores the potential applications of the forensic pathology research and forensic practice.

Identification of unknown human remains by comparison of antemortem and postmortem radiographs

Abstract:The identification of unknown human remains by comparison of ante mortem and post mortem radiographs has found wide acceptance in recent years. This report documents two recent cases in Hong Kong in which unequivocal positive identifications were achieved by comparison of radiographs. In both cases, comparison of radiographs was the only available means of establishment of personal identity. The first case involved the identification of a very badly burned body of a 22-year-old male by the matching of the ante mortem and post mortem radiographic images of the cranial base (in particular the sella turcica), hard palate, paranasal air sinuses, mastoid air cells, the lambdoid suture, and the upper molar teeth as revealed on comparable lateral skull films. The second was the identification of a deliberately mutilated torso of a 28-year-old female by comparison of the radiographic images of the lumbar spine, pelvis, and head of the femur as revealed on plain abdominal films taken before and after death. While evidence of injury or surgery did not figure in either of the identifications, the presence of a mild scoliosis and the absence of the twelfth ribs aided identification in the latter case. Emphasis is placed in this account on the value of radiographic comparison as a means of identification because it draws upon the matching of intricate and highly individual patterns of external and internal bony anatomy that are stable over long periods of time. In cases where ante mortem radiographs and photographs are available, establishment of personal identity by comparison of radiographs is deemed preferable to identification by photographic superimposition because radiographic comparison permits the matching of a potentially larger number of unique anatomical features and is less time consuming and technically exacting.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To assess the clinical application of spiral CT 3D reconstruction in forensic diagnosis of rib fracture.METHODS:Thirty-five cases of rib fractures were collectively studied by X-ray, regular CT scan, and adoptive 3D reconstruction with spiral CT.RESULTS:Clear and stereoscopic images of rib fractures without interference of the surrounding soft tissue were obtained in all of 35 cases examined.CONCLUSION:Spiral CT 3D reconstruction could be a valuable means in forensic diagnosis of rib fracture.

Abstract:Radiomics has become a research field that involves the process of converting standard nursing images into quantitative image data, which can be combined with other data sources and subsequently analyzed using traditional biostatistics or artificial intelligence (Al) methods. Due to the capture of biological and pathophysiological information by radiomics features, these quantitative radiomics features have been proven to provide fast and accurate non-invasive biomarkers for lung cancer risk prediction, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment response monitoring, and tumor biology. In this review, radiomics has been emphasized and discussed in lung cancer research, including advantages, challenges, and drawbacks.

Abstract:Since the discovery of X-rays at the end of the 19th century, medical imageology has progressed for 100 years, and medical imaging has become an important auxiliary tool for clinical diagnosis. With the launch of the human genome project (HGP) and the development of various high-throughput detection techniques, disease exploration in the post-genome era has extended beyond investigations of structural changes to in-depth analyses of molecular abnormalities in tissues, organs and cells, on the basis of gene expression and epigenetics. These techniques have given rise to genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and other systems biology subspecialties, including radiogenomics. Radiogenomics is an important revolution in the traditional visually identifiable imaging technology and constitutes a new branch, radiomics. Radiomics is aimed at extracting quantitative imaging features automatically and developing models to predict lesion phenotypes in a non-invasive manner. Here, we summarize the advent and development of radiomics, the basic process and challenges in clinical practice, with a focus on applications in pulmonary nodule evaluations, including diagnostics, pathological and molecular classifications, treatment response assessments and prognostic predictions, especially in radiotherapy.

Abstract:Postmortem radiograph skeletal surveys serve as imaging adjuncts to autopsy and forensic documentation in hospitals with no available forensic computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging services. Despite this, modern literature pertaining practical applications of postmortem radiographs have gradually been superseded by interests in advanced imaging modalities. The main advantages are characterizing or excluding violent traumatic bone fractures or abnormalities, locating foreign bodies, identifying medical devices as well as acting as secondary adjuncts to anthropologic assessment. Limitations that test diagnostic value of postmortem radiographs include lack of direct visualization of soft tissue as well aspostmortem artefacts that obscure natural causes of death and can be misinterpreted as antemortem pathology. The roles and limitations of postmortem radiographs are illustrated in a case of a decomposed but complete and identified adult male decedent with reference to autopsy findings and literature review.

Abstract:Radiation imaging, as a key issue in nuclear technology, has received considerable attention in the industry. It is widely used in nuclear medicine, Customs supervision, and many other areas. The objective of this investigation is to get insight into the principle, operation characteristics and image characteristics of radiation imaging. In this paper, an investigation on radiation imaging is conducted on three main inspection systems for Customs supervision, including small X-ray inspection machine, CT baggage inspection system, and large container inspection system. The principle, operation characteristics, evaluation indexes, pseudo-color processing and image characteristics are discussed in detail. The results indicate that the spatial resolution of small X-ray inspection machine is much higher than that of CT baggage/goods inspection system and large container/vehicle inspection system. It is a challenge to identify substances and specific shapes in the case of overlapping for small X-ray inspection system. Moreover, the mechanism of X-ray images is discussed as well. The radiation images are divided into three types, including two-dimensional, pseudo-color, high spatial resolution; two-dimensional, gray, high spatial resolution; three-dimensional, pseudo-color, high density resolution. The further investigation on machine inspection images is suggested to focus on the application environment. For some objects with specific characteristics, such as amorphous, explosive, the CT baggage inspection has much better performance than other systems. The research in this paper reveals the mechanism, parametric effect and imaging characteristics. It could provide a necessary foundation for the follow-up intelligent processing, detection, identification and annotation for radiation imaging in nuclear area. The research on inspection devices could lend strong experience to medical treatment, industry and many other fields.

Abstract:Postmortem imaging (PMI) technology known as virtual autopsy or virtopsy is regarded as a useful method of noninvasive or minimally invasive autopsy in forensic practice. Postmortem computed tomography is applicable to traumatic investigation, acute hemorrhage, pulmonary parenchyma disease, calcification (calculus, atherosclerosis), and gas accumulation. Postmortem magnetic resonance (PMMR) has been proven to have advantages in soft tissue identification. Cardiac death is one of the keys and difficult points in forensic practice. With the introduction and development of PMCT angiography and PMMR, it was proved to be a very promising tool in the investigation of cardiac death, including vascular cavities and ischemic myocardium. This article reviewed the applications of the latest PMI and its related technologies in forensic cardiac pathology, including advantages, limitations, and development prospects.
Forensic Scanner Identification Using Machine Learning

Abstract:Due to the increasing availability and functionality of image editing tools, many forensic techniques such as digital image authentication, source identification and tamper detection are important for forensic image analysis. In this paper, we describe a machine learning based system to address the forensic analysis of scanner devices. The proposed system uses deep-learning to automatically learn the intrinsic features from various scanned images. Our experimental results show that high accuracy can be achieved for source scanner identification. The proposed system can also generate a reliability map that indicates the manipulated regions in an scanned image.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduced the state-of-the-art techniques for digital image forensic authentication. A novel system was presented which consisted of the advanced tools for digital image forensic authentication. The tools offered in the system had the functions including the image file header analysis, device identification, re-compression analysis, copy-paste detection, resampling analysis, etc. The system performance has been tested under practical cases of forensic image examination. The experimental data and results have proven the advancement of the proposed system which could be widely applied in forensic image examination and other forensic applications.

Abstract:Background: Cone-Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT) is a non-invasive, rapid, cost-effective, and low-radiation technique. Being a three-dimensional (3D) imaging process, it is better suited for the analysis of 3D structures like teeth, bones, or facial sinuses. CBCT is already widely used in dentistry and its application in forensic odontology is promising. Objective: This study aimed to provide an overview of CBCT use in forensic dentistry. Method: A bibliographic search using PUBMED was performed with the following keyword combinations: ("Cone-Beam Computed Tomography"[MeSH Terms]) OR (cbct)) AND (forensic dentistry) OR ("Forensic Dentistry"[Mesh]) and on the Scopus platform using the keywords “cbct forensic dentistry”. Considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the final selection resulted in 68 studies. Results: Articles subjects were as follows: 11 studies (16%) on comparative identification, 4 (5%) on identification by bitemarks, 30 (44%) on age estimation, 20 (29%) on sex estimation, and 7 (10%) on facial reconstruction. CBCT technology proved to be an accurate tool for age estimation (particularly in the pulp narrowing technique), sex estimation, bitemarks analysis, and facial reconstruction. Conclusion: CBCT's increasing use in dental clinics makes a huge quantity of data available. Professionals should examine how to organize and disseminate these valuable antemortem data. Training is mandatory to understand CBCT’s technical limitations as well as manage the presence of artifacts. Further studies should be made on larger samples to fully understand the potential of CBCT technology in forensics.
