Abstract:Objective To study the mechanism of functional magnetic resonance underlying motor function recovery in chronic subcortical infarction patients by comparing the activated areas in cerebral infarction patients and healthy controls in performing hand motion task with functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI).Methods Twenty-three chronic subcortical infarction patients with their motor function well-recovered served as patient group and 24 age-matched healthy subjects served as control group.Their motor function was assessed according to the Fugl-Meyer Assessment Scale.A block fMRI experimental task was designed. The patients performed an empty fist task with their left or right hand. The fMRI data were analyzed with the statistical parametric mapping software. Results The unaffected hand motion activated the contralateral sensorimotor cortex, ipsilateral cerebellum, and bilateral supplementary motor areas in the two groups. The affected hand motion-activated areas in patients were similar to those in controls. However, the activation of ipsilesional Ml area was stronger in patients than in controls. Conclusion The stronger activation of ipsilesional Ml area may play an important role in motor function recovery in subcortical infarction patients.
