Abstract:Nanostructured sub-stoichiometric transition metal oxides hold promising applications in many areas, while challenge still remains towards their precisely controlled synthesis, particularly for those ultrafine nanowires. In present work, a carbon nanotube (CNT) inner growth based on two-step synthetic approach was adopted to achieve one-dimensional sub-stoichiometric tungsten oxides. Ammonium tetrathiotungsten((NH4)(2)WS4)) were encapsulated into the inner cavity of carbon nanotubes, which were thermally decomposed into tungsten oxides inside the CNTs. Characterizations confirm that the CNT-filling products are ultrafine one-dimensional W3O8 nanowires, that appears 1.23-1.93 nm in width (corresponding to four-five arrays of tungsten atomic column) and up tens of microns in length (close to that of CNTs). The non-noticeable size-dependent lattice parameters of the W3O8 nanowires and the large nanowire-CNT separation indicate a rather weak interaction between the filled W3O8 nanowires and host CNTs, which provides the opportunity to separate and probe the intrinsic properties of these ultrafine 1D W3O8 nanowires. Nevertheless, the proposed synthetic method is extendable to achieve other 1D transition metal oxides.

Abstract:A facile, ionic liquid-assisted route was developed to synthesize hierarchical CuS flower-like submicrospheres at 80°C for 24 h. The method was based on a reaction between CuCl2 and thioacetamide (TAA) in aqueous solution with using ionic liquid 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl) as an assisted agent. The chemical composition, morphology and size of CuS product were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. The result shows that the as-prepared CuS consists of flowery spheres with a diameter of 0·6 ∼ 1·0 μm, and these submicrospheres are, in fact, built by numerous nanoflakes with a thickness of 10 ∼ 20 nm. The optical property of CuS product was examined by UV-Vis. In general, we suggested an ecologically and environmentally friendly route for the syntheses of hierarchical metal chalcogenides structures in this paper.

Abstract:Uniform-sized and monodispersed boehmite core–shell and hollow spheres have been successfully synthesized using a template-free solvothermal route. The experimental parameters such as reaction duration, the trisodium citrate amounts and solvents are shown to play important roles in the formation of the AlOOH core–shell and hollow spheres. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform IR, thermal gravimetric analysis, N2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution TEM were used to characterize the products. The results show that the prepared polycrystalline hollow spheres are composed of well-aligned AlOOH nanowires and have an orthorhombic structure. Finally, a dissolution–renucleation mechanism was proposed for the formation of boehmite hollow structures.

Abstract:Hierarchical cantaloupe-like and hollow microspherical AlOOH superstructures were successfully synthesized on a large scale via a one-step hydrothermal route. The as-obtained superstructures were characterized by several techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurement. The as-obtained superstructures, consisting of closely packed nanorods in an ordered fashion, have an average horizontal axis of ca. 2.5 µm and a longitudinal axis of ca. 1.5 µm. The as-obtained cantaloupe-like AlOOH superstructures have Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area of about 55.5 m2/g. The possible formation mechanism of the cantaloupe-like AlOOH superstructures is proposed and discussed.

Abstract:Hierarchical flower-like MoS2 spheres with high purity were synthesized by hydrothermal method using WO3 nanorods or H2WO4 as an additive. The flower-like spheres were about 1μm in diameter and built up with MoS2 thin flakes with thickness of several nanometers. Energy disperse X-ray spectrum showed that the spheres were only composed of Mo and S with atomic ratio of 2:1. Powder X-ray diffraction result further indicated that the products were MoS2. The reaction mechanism is discussed and suggested that tungstenic acid played an important role on the formation of flower-like MoS2 spheres.

Abstract:ZnS hollow nanospheres with porous shells were successfully fabricated by a simple one-pot template-free hydrothermal route with the assistance of trolamine. The hollow nanospheres with a mean diameter of about 220 nm and the pore size of the porous shell of about 3.2 nm exhibit large BET surface areas of 129.9 m(2) g(-1). The formation of ZnS hollow nanospheres was definitely driven by the well-known Ostwald ripening process. The morphology of the product could be controlled by adjusting the volume of trolamine in the ternary solution, which could influence the nucleation density and rate of the growing region during the initial stage of reaction. As synthesized, highly defective nanocrystalline ZnS exhibits a very strong defect-related green emission, which may pertain to the emission enhancement of the unique geometrical morphology of ZnS hollow nanospheres with a porous shell. The observed green PL emission of the wurtzite-type ZnS nanomaterials could provide an interesting application in the development of novel luminescent devices.

Abstract:A simple organic amine-assisted hydrothermal process has been proposed to simultaneously realize the synthesis and assembly of copper sulfide nanoparticles at low temperature (90 similar to 110 degreesC). Nanowire-like aggregates (average diameter of 120 nm and length of 2 mum) assembled by digenite phase copper sulfide nanoparticles have been synthesized with triethylenediamine (TEDA) as a linking agent. Nanotube-like aggregates (diameter ranging from 40 to 200 nm and length from 400 nm to 4 mum) and nanovesicle-like aggregates (size ranging from 50 to 180 nm), assembled by djurleite phase copper sulfide nanoparticles, have also been obtained by substituting tramethylethylenediamine (TMEA) and di-n-butylamine (DBA) for TEDA, respectively.

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/CdS core/shell heterostructures have been successfully synthesized via a simple solution-phase method. The thickness of CdS shells can be facilely tuned by either the reaction temperature or time. The CdS nanoparticles are first formed directly on the surface of MWCNT, and then a uniform CdS sheath is yielded via orientated aggregation processes. The present work provides a simple route to obtain MWCNT-based core/shell heterostructures and thus is of wide interest for the studies of nanomaterials and nanodevices.

Abstract:Cu nanotubes have been synthesized using silicon oxide nanowires as templates. The silicon oxide nanowires were then coated with a thin, uniform copper layer by metallorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Hollow Cu nanotubes were then produced by etching away the inner silicon oxide templates with dilute HF solution. The synthesis process was simple and of low cost. A large quantity of the Cu nanotubes can be readily grown. (C) 2004 The Electrochemical Society.

Abstract:Hollow spheres with mesoporous silica nanoparticles shell were synthesized with the use of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and polystyrene (PS) hollow spheres as dual templates. The key to this study is that the uneven surface of the template provides nucleation sites for mesoporous nanoparticles, resulting in the formation of hollow spheres with mesoporous silica nanoparticles shell. The final products with hierarchical mesopores can be obtained through a simple one-step approach.

Abstract:This work presents a one-pot template-free synthesis, detailed characterization, growth mechanism and application of well-defined uniform monodisperse (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical hollow microspheres self-assembled with single-crystalline nanosheets. The synthesis was conducted by hydrothermal treatment of bismuth citrate and sodium carbonate in water. Time-dependent evolutions of phase structure, composition, and morphology were investigated systematically and revealed that the growth mechanism of such novel structures involved a unique multistep pathway. First, near amorphous particles were produced through reaction, nucleation, crystallization, and aggregation processes. Then, stacked embryos of intermediate (BiO)(4)CO3(OH)(2) microspheres with attached particles were produced due to dissolution and recrystallization. Subsequently, stacked uniform solid microspheres with small particles attached on edges were generated by the consumption of particles through Ostwald ripening. The stacked microspheres further grew to form monodisperse hierarchical microspheres with a hole in the center, like flower buds. Finally, uniform monodisperse (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical hollow microspheres were produced through layers splitting. The aggregation of the self-assembled nanosheets contributed to the formation of 3D hierarchical architecture containing mesopores, which is favorable for efficient reactants transport and photo-energy harvesting. Furthermore, the band gap structure of (BiO)(2)CO3 was revealed by the experimental method combined with density functional theoretical calculation. As expected, the novel (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical hollow microspheres exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity due to the special hierarchical morphology, exceeding that of (BiO)(2)CO3 particles and commercial P25. The as-prepared uniform (BiO)(2)CO3 microspheres with well-defined hierarchical hollow structures are also ideal candidates for investigating their architecture-dependent performances in other areas, such as solar energy conversion, catalysis, electronics and so on.

Abstract:Copper/silica-based nanostructures with different morphologies and microstructures have been synthesized on Si wafer by thermal evaporation of CuO and SiO powders in an argon-hybridized hydrogen ambient at high temperatures. Systematically studies by scanning electron microscopy with field emission gun and transmission electron microscopy show that the composite nanowires have a core–shell structure with an average diameter of ∼120nm and lengths of several hundred nanometers to several ten microns. Electron diffraction pattern and electron energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis reveal that the core coincides with copper and the shell corresponds to amorphous silicon oxide with chemical composition SiO2−x (0≦x≦0.5). Besides the Cu/SiO2−x nanowires, many other nanostructures such as octpous-, pine-, and chain-like structures have also been found. The growth mechanisms of these products were briefly discussed.

Abstract:We have developed a robust method for the synthesis of silica nanotubes with controlled aspect ratios on a large scale by templating against rod-like nanocrystals. Crystalline nanorods of a nickel-hydrazine complex are first formed in reverse micelles by surfactant capping on side facets, and subsequent silica coating and selective etching give rise to silica nanotubes of high uniformity and yield. The length of the silica nanotubes is tunable in the range 37-340 nm and can reach as long as micrometers. Control of the length is conveniently achieved by tuning the hydrazine/nickel ratio, which affects the growth kinetics of the nanocrystal templates. The inner diameter of the silica nanotubes can be adjusted in the range 10-20 nm by choosing different surfactants. This method is unique in utilizing reverse micelles as discrete nanoscale reactors for the growth of nanocrystals, allowing for precise control of the features of the nanotubes and opening up new opportunities in the synthesis of novel anisotropic nanomaterials, construction of nanodevices, and potential drug delivery applications.

Abstract:Micrometer-scaled hierarchical tubular structures of CuS assembled by nanoflake-built microspheres were first synthesized in high yield via a one-pot intermediate crystal templating process without surfactant or added templates, in which the intermediate complex Cu-3(TAA)(3)Cl-3 formed in situ and subsequently served as a self-sacrificed template. Whereas the intermediate complex and final hierarchical structures were well characterized, the formation mechanism was preliminarily studied based on X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations by arresting the growth at a series of intermediate stages in the formation of the hierarchical tubular structures. The benefits for the as-obtained nanostructures arise from their ultrahigh Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) value and the potential capacity advantage for the catalyst industry and hydrogen storage.

Abstract:A kind of carbon nanotube bundle has been synthesized by a simple one-step solvothermal reaction between Na and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) using NiCl2 as catalyst precursor. Before the reaction, NiCl2 was initially dispersed ultrasonically in cyclohexane then prereduced by Na at 230degreesC to produce small Ni particles in reduced state. The tubes thus-produced have a uniform outer diameter of about 20 nm, an inner diameter of 4 nm, and are highly ordered assembled as bundles which have a 2D hexagonal arrangement as proven by SAXS and TEM experiments.
