Abstract:In order to obtain oriented nano/micro-structured materials via a simple method for potential nanoelectronic/microelectronic applications, a study on preparation of oriented ZnO structures under hydrothermal reaction condition was carried out. The deposition film was characterized with scanning electron micrographs (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The experimental results under the optimized reaction condition indicated that a ZnO nanotube array on a glass substrate can be directly formed via a one-step approach in ammonia aqueous solution. The XRD results showed the highly preferential growth of the ZnO nanotubes along the c-axis orientiation. The PL results showed the strong photoluminescence property of the ZnO nanotube array in a wide light range (387–416nm). The possible mechanism to form the ZnO nanotube array via such a simple in-situ deposition approach was discussed. This template-less, surfactant-free and seed-free aqueous synthesis method makes it possible to synthesize large-scale, low-cost and well-oriented ZnO nano/microtube film at moderate temperature.

Abstract:An effective one-pot hydrothermal synthesis method based on suppressed growth strategy was invented to produce mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs). In a TEOS–CTAB–NH4OH–water–formaldehyde system, formaldehyde was used as suppressant which formed a polymer shell on the outer surface of the MSNs to control the particle size to about 30nm. A nanoporous carbon framework was obtained when precursor was carbonized in N2 followed by a HF leaching of the silica. The pore size of the carbon was about 30nm. The mechanism for the synthesis process was described.

Abstract:Nanosized zeolites have been found in extensive applications. Herein, a rapid two-step crystallization process (8 h) in a semisolid-like gel system, constructed by simply mixing and grinding solid silica gel, NaOH with TPAOH aqueous solution without extra water addition and any other additives, for the first time is demonstrated to synthesize nanosized silicalite-1 zeolites (similar to 66 nm) with high crystallinity and high product yield (>90%). The obtained nanosized silicalite-1 zeolites exhibit a large BET surface area (418 m(2) g(-1)), a high micropore surface area (316 m(2) g(-1)), and a rich micropore volume (0.14 cm(3) g(-1)). The rapid evolution process of nanosized zeolites could be decoupled into the nucleation stage at low temperatures and the crystallization stage at high temperatures during the two-step crystallization process. Importantly, the semisolid-like gel ensures fast nucleation. Moreover, in the later crystallization period, the fast crystal growth and inhibited ripening endow nanosized zeolite crystals with good crystallinity through a mass transfer-confined space. The obtained silicalite-1 zeolites were successfully applied in the preparation of (h0h)-oriented MFI zeolite membranes on hollow fibers, showing the flux up to 5.44 kg m(-2) h(-1) and the separation factor of 70 during the pervaporation test (5 wt % ethanol/water solution, 60 degrees C). This research develops a state-of-the-art synthetic approach for the efficient preparation of high-quality MFI-type nanozeolites.

Abstract:Water-soluble dibenzoyl methane europium complexes doped silica nanospheres were synthesized by the sol-gel process. The nanospheres had a nearly spherical shape and an average size of 10-30 nm. The colloidal solutions of the dibenzoyl methane europium complexes doped silica nanospheres showed bright red luminescence upon short wavelength UV irradiation.

Abstract:A simple, one-step synthetic route to prepare ordered mesoporous silica monoliths with controllable quantities of metal oxide nanocrystals in their channels is presented. The method is based on the assisted assembly effect for mesostructure-directing of the metal complexes formed by the interaction of metal ions with the -O- groups of copolymers. Highly ordered hexagonal silica monoliths, loaded with various metal oxide nanocrystals, including those of Cr2O3, MnO, Fe2O3, Co3O4, NiO, CuO, ZnO, CdO, SnO2, and In2O3, can be obtained by this one-step pathway. In the NiO/SiO2 nanocomposite, nickel oxide nanorods with face-centered cubic lattices are formed at low doping ratios, and they can be transformed into nanowires by increasing the quantities of the precursors. In the Fe2O3/SiO2 nanocomposites, a one-dimensional assembly of iron oxide nanoparticles is observed. In the In2O3/SiO2 nanocomposites, single crystal nanowires with high aspect ratios are obtained. For the other metal oxide nanocomposites, including Cr2O3, MnO, Co3O4, CuO, ZnO, CdO, and SnO, only crystalline nanorods are obtained. N-2 sorption results of the metal oxide/SiO2 mesostructured nanocomposites reveal that nanocrystals inside the pores do not severely decrease the pore volume or the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of the mesoporous silica host. The band-gaps of SnO2 and In2O3 nanocrystals, calculated from UV-vis spectra, are much larger than the corresponding bulk materials, implying the quantum confinement effect in the small particles. Co3O4/SiO2 mesostructured nanocomposites catalyze the complete combustion of CH4. These studies provide a new and simple method for templating synthesis of metal oxide nanostructures.

Abstract:In this study, we report a new, simple approach to the preparation of high-surface-area zeolitic silica (HZS) with well-defined mesoporosity by combining hydrothermal synthesis and sol-gel processing. N-2 adsorption-desorption measurements show that HZS has a BET surface area of 678-723 m(2) g(-1) and well-defined bimodal pores at 5.5 and 26.0-34.5 Angstrom. XRD, TEM and FT-IR show that HZS has a typical zeolite MFI structure. HZS is thermally stable and has tunable pore size and pore volume, and thus is promising for applications in catalysis, separation, and micro electronics. The described approach also appears general and may be readily extended to zeolitic alumino silicates by using suspensions of other zeolite nanoparticles.

Abstract:Mesoporous silicas with hierarchical structures were synthesized under a mild alkali condition by cationic or mixed cationic-nonionic surfactant templating. When cetylpyridium bromide was used, a novel morphology of mesoporous silica of type MCM-41 was formed. It was obsearved. that single nanotubes with diameter of about 5 nm and bundles of nanotubes grew from the (001) surface of the mesoporous silica particles, forming a paintbrush-like morphology. The synthesis process was investigated and the formation mechanism of such a surface nanotube patterning is discussed. When mixed surfactant of cetylpyridium chloride and Triton X-100 was used, a mixed ordered-disordered hierarchical mesostructure with arc rings of submicrometer scales was observed in the synthesized mesoporous silica which exhibits a narrow pore size distribution, high surface area and a large pore volume. Are ropes consisting of ordered mesopores, as well as many spheres of submicrometer in diameter with shells of about 40 nm in thickness consisting of ordered arrays of mesopores, were observed, though the majority of the particles contained disordered mesoporous microdomains. This material lacks overall long-range ordering whereas local ordering of mesopores exists.

Abstract:Herein, a simple and efficient synthesis based on a dual templating approach allow the preparation of tunable macroporous mesoporous silica materials. Macropores incorporation has been obtained using polymer spheres of well-defined size and their subsequent removal by thermal treatment allowed the independent control of the macropore size entrance between 200 nm and 50 nm. The addition of the block copolymer drives the formation of a second mesostructured skeleton, with a pore size centered around 4 nm, throughout the material framework. By a fine tuning of the sol gel synthesis parameters (Polymer:TEOS ratio, aging conditions), we succeeded in guiding the SBA-15 rod-like morphology having randomly packed macropores to a derived SBA-15 with a homogeneous honeycomb macrostructure. Moreover, large mesoporous windows are generated between adjacent macropores. Hence, this simple one-pot synthesis approach, allowing scaling-up, offers fine tuning porosity at the macropore scale. Abstract:Silica nanotubes have significant applications in various fields, including thermal insulation, self-cleaning, and catalysis. Currently, the synthesis methods of silica nanotubes are mostly limited to the template method. In this work, a template-free strategy and vapor-phase approach were used to prepare silica nanotubes. Poly(methylhydrosiloxane) (PMHS) was hydrolyzed and condensed in a high-temperature closed reactor by using ammonia as a catalyst. The resulting product was then subjected to template-free self-assembly to synthesize silica nanotubes incorporating methyl groups. The silica nanotubes were synthesized under varying conditions, resulting in lengths ranging from 50 nm to several micrometers, exterior diameters between 40 and 120 nm, and wall thicknesses varying from 7 to 30 nm. The synthesized products underwent morphology analysis using TEM and FESEM for morphology analysis, elemental composition analysis using XPS, and chemical structure identification using FTIR, and the possible formation mechanism of silica nanotubes formation was also speculated. Furthermore, the coatings formed by silica nanotubes exhibited remarkable superhydrophobic self-cleaning properties with a water contact angle of 162° and a rolling angle of less than 1°.

Abstract:We have developed a robust method for the synthesis of silica nanotubes with controlled aspect ratios on a large scale by templating against rod-like nanocrystals. Crystalline nanorods of a nickel-hydrazine complex are first formed in reverse micelles by surfactant capping on side facets, and subsequent silica coating and selective etching give rise to silica nanotubes of high uniformity and yield. The length of the silica nanotubes is tunable in the range 37-340 nm and can reach as long as micrometers. Control of the length is conveniently achieved by tuning the hydrazine/nickel ratio, which affects the growth kinetics of the nanocrystal templates. The inner diameter of the silica nanotubes can be adjusted in the range 10-20 nm by choosing different surfactants. This method is unique in utilizing reverse micelles as discrete nanoscale reactors for the growth of nanocrystals, allowing for precise control of the features of the nanotubes and opening up new opportunities in the synthesis of novel anisotropic nanomaterials, construction of nanodevices, and potential drug delivery applications.

Abstract:Uniform carbon@silica nanocables and silica nanotubes with well-controlled inner diameters can be synthesized in an easy way by a sacrificial templating method. This was performed using carbon nanofibres as hard templates that were synthesized previously by a hydrothermal carbonization process. Silica nanotubes with well-controlled inner diameters were synthesized from carbon@silica core–shell nanostructures by removal of the core carbon component. The inner diameters of the as-prepared silica nanotubes can be well controlled from several nanometres to hundreds of nanometres by adjusting the diameters of the carbon nanofibres. The silica nanotubes synthesized by this method display strong photoluminescence in ultraviolet at room temperature. Such uniform silica nanotubes might find potential applications in many fields such as encapsulation, catalysis, chemical/biological separation, and sensing.

Abstract:Nanosized multilayered silica vesicles have been synthesized through a dual-template way by using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and C3F7O(CFCF3CF2O)(2)CFCF3 CONH(CH2)(3)N+(C2H5)(2)CH3I-(FC-4) as the cotemplates and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the siliceous precursor. According to transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and N-2 sorption analysis, the formation of the multilayered silica vesicles passed through the route of the normal mesoporous silica spheres (MCM-41) to irregular hexagonal structures with cavities inside MCM-41 spheres and finally to the small-sized multilayered siliceous vesicles with the increase of FC-4/CTAB molar ratio. The possible mechanism of the two kinds of micelles cooperation was discussed. The synthesized silica vesicle spheres were 30-40 nm with a few shells that may facilitate the transport of the molecules. Furthermore, the vesicular structure was also obtained by aging at 150 degrees C, which maintained high surface area even after hydrothermal treatment in boiling water for 48 h. The higher hydrothermal stability, high surface area, and pore volume would benefit the loading of catalysts and increase the adsorption capacity.

Abstract:In this paper, silicon oxide nanowires with P2(1)2(1)2 space group were synthesized by liquid-solid phase hydrothermal method, using silica sol, Fe ( NO3)(3)center dot 9H(2)O and ethylenediamine-water solution as raw materials. Their structures were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD and EDS. It was found that the reaction activity could be Improved due to the employment of suitable silica mid iron resources. As a result, the reaction conditions became more moderate, and less Fe species was used. An optimum experimental condition could be obtained, that is, the Si/Fe molar ratio of 1 : 0. 4, the ethylenediamine/water volume ratio of 8 : 5 the temperature of 180 degrees C and the reaction time of 4 d. This approach expected to provide a huge possibility for the industrialized manufacture of silicon oxide nanowires.

Abstract:Under typical dilute reactant compositions (3 ~ 5 wt% of surfactant template concentration) and conventional hydrothermal conditions for mesoporous materials synthesis, successful preparation of hierarchically macro/mesoporous silica monoliths was reported in this paper. The resultant materials were characterized by a series of techniques including powder X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption–desorption, SEM, TEM/EDS, and Hg porosimetry. A new kind of stable and hierarchically porous pure silica monoliths was confirmed, which are featured with highly ordered mesoporous structures, rod-shaped unit particles, large specific surface area of 492 m 2 /g, continuous macropores of about 4.0 μm in size and high macropore volume of about 13.1 cm 3 /g. Moreover, using the resultant silica monoliths as hard templates, carbon monoliths have been successfully replicated, which inherit the structural characters of parent silica materials.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica has been extensively studied for a wide variety of applications such as transport and storage vehicles of guest materials, where it is critical but remains challenging to control the pore structure at a macroscopic scale. Herein, aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays with thicknesses of up to millimeters have been used as templates to produce macroscopically oriented mesopores in the resulting silica material. The pore size, length, and number density were tuned by varying the diameter, length, and number density of CNTs. When surfactants were co-assembled with the silica precursor, the produced ordered mesopores from the surfactant could further interconnect the macroscopically oriented mesopores. The sizes, densities, and structures of the ordered mesopores have been controlled by varying the surfactants. This interconnected porous structure provided the material with unique advantages, and the use for adsorption of a guest chemical was studied as a demonstration.

Abstract:Herein, one-dimensional double helix is fabricated via supramolecular self-assembly of a sugar-based amphiphile, which can be utilized as soft template to synthesize silica double helices and nanotubes through sol−gel reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The self-assembled double helix can be rationally transformed into nonhelical fibers with the aid of conventional ionic surfactants. It is suggested that the introduction of ionic surfactant will impart electrostatic repulsion inside double helix and shape double helices into nanofibers. Interestingly the nonhelical fibers coassembled by C4AG and cationic surfactants have been proven to direct the preparation of single-stranded helical SiO2 through sol−gel polycondensation. This is the first time that both double and single-stranded silica helix have been created in one system.

Abstract:A facile one-pot method has been developed to synthesize uniform gold@mesoporous silica nanospheres (Au@MSNs), which have a well-defined core-shell structure with ordered mesoporous silica as a shell. The resulting Au@MSNs have a high surface area (∼521 m2/g) and uniform pore size (∼2.5 nm) for the mesoporous silica shell. The diameter of the gold core can be regulated by adjusting the amount of HAuCl4. The catalytic performance of the Au@MSNs was investigated using the reduction of 4-nitrophenol as a model reaction. The mesopores of the silica shells provide direct access for the reactant molecules to diffuse and subsequently interact with the gold cores. In addition, the Au@MSNs display the great advantage of sintering-resistance to 950 °C because the mesoporous silica shells inhibit aggregation or deformation of the gold cores. The high thermal stability enables the Au@MSNs to be employed in high-temperature catalytic reactions.
