Abstract:This paper reports the synthesis of carbon-encapsulated Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3, and Fe nanostructures using FeOOH as a precursor and carbon nanocapsules (CNCs) as nanoreactors via controllable thermal transformation processes. The magnetic property investigation reveals that the as-synthesized Fe3O4-CNCs, γ-Fe2O3-CNCs, and Fe-C nanostructures all exhibit ferromagnetic behavior with quite high saturation magnetizations. Moreover, the Fe3O4-CNCs with a controlled carbon coating are prepared and their comparative lithium storage properties are investigated. It is found that optimized Fe3O4-CNCs exhibit high capacity and good cycling performance.

Abstract:In this study, the preparation method for magnetic carbonaceous polysaccharide (Fe3O4@CP) microspheres was developed to increase the yield and encapsulation efficiency using a suitable quantity of NaOH as the catalysis. The optimum fabrication condition was identified through a series of experiment, under which the resulting Fe3O4@CP microspheres show good magnetic properties. The saturation magnetization was 60.629emu/g and the magnetite content increased up to 81.7%. The shell of the microspheres was carbonaceous polysaccharide with rich hydroxyl and carbonyl groups located on the surface, and the mean size was less than 300nm. The formation mechanism of Fe3O4@CP was also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Carbon-encapsulated Fe nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by a two-step procedure method of hydrothermal and subsequent thermal reduction process. The introduction of hydrogen atmosphere helps to obtain pure α-Fe phase and the lower annealing temperature (at 550°C). The morphological characterization indicates that the nanoparticle presents a quasi-spherical shaped, core–shell structure with diameter ranged from 10 to 20nm and a carbon shell of about 4nm. The results of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectrum demonstrate that carbon in the as-synthesized product is in amorphous phase. Magnetic measurements reveal the ferromagnetic behavior of the product.
An Easy Approach to Encapsulating Fe3O4 Nanoparticles in Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes filled with magnetic materials are very interesting as new materials for applications in biomedicine. A simple and efficient method was developed to encapsulate Fe3O4 nanoparticles in multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Transmission and scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and X-ray powder diffraction measurements confirmed that the Fe3O4 nanoparticles are encapsulated in the MWCNTs. The magnetic properties of the MWCNTs and the Fe3O4-filled MWCNTs were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer. Results showed that the Fe3O4-filled MWCNTs exhibited superparamagnetism at room temperature and possessed a higher saturation magnetization (Ms) (around 13.15 emu/g) than that of the unfilled ones (around 0.35 emu/g). The MWCNTs encapsulating Fe3O4 nanoparticles have potential applications in engineering and medicine.

Abstract:Here reported a facile approach to synthesize rattle type magnetic nanocomposite with a permeable Fe3O4 shell and noble metallic core. The core of yolk materials are controlled by varying the metallic ion precursor (such as K2PdCl4, AgNO3, KAuCl4, and Cu(NO3)(2)). The content of the metallic cores increases by increasing of the amount of the metallic salt. This one step method is based on an in situ reduction and Ostwald ripening process. As-obtained particles show porous nature and superparamagnetic characteristic. Moreover, the as-prepared magnetic recyclable nanocatalyst manifests high activity when evaluated for their catalytic properties and they can be separated from the reaction system by using a magnet.

Abstract:The core/shell structure of magnetite/carbon colloidal nanoparticles (CNPs) with average size about 190 nm has been prepared via a one-step solvothermal process using ferrocene as a single reactant. The composition, phase, and morphology of the nanostructure have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. Magnetic measurements reveal the superparamagnetic nature of the material with a magnetization saturation of 40.2 emu/g at room temperature. Under the induction of an external magnetic field, strong diffraction in the visible light spectrum can be observed in a suspension of CNPs in ethanol and the diffraction wavelength varies with the strength of the external magnetic field. After being stored for eight months in an ethanol solution, these CNPs can still diffract visible lights when a magnetic field was applied, which is attributed to carbon coating and creating carboxyl groups on the surface of carbon shells introducing both a steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsions between magnetite nanoparticles.

Abstract:Aligned array of chain-like carbon nanocapsules was successively prepared by a simple CVD process. XRD and HRTEM analyses revealed the carbon nanochains were filled with Fe3C particles other than Fe. EELS and elemental mapping displayed that there exist a few N atoms doping in the nanochains wall. Electron beam irradiation indicated that the nanochain was formed by the converging of conjoint multi-nanocapsules. Periodic supply of ferrocene and the coalescent of adjacent nanocapsules were the two dominant factors for the growth of nanochains structures.

Abstract:Carbon encapsulated magnetic (metal) nanoparticles (CEMNPs) have wide applications in biomedicine and the magnetic recording industry. However, synthesis of such particles with a high coercive force and good ferromagnetism is still a great challenge. The present study reports a new method for the continuous production of CEMNPs of high purity. This involves the spray pyrolysis of a mixture of iron pentacarbonyl and ethanol at 500-900 degrees C. Results show that the Fe (or Fe3C) particles synthesized at 700 and 900 degrees C were well encapsulated by graphitic layers with rare byproducts such as carbon nanotubes, nanofibers, or bulk amorphous carbon. Those synthesized at 700 degrees C had a particle size of 30-50 nm, a giant coercive force of 867 Oe, and a good magnetic remanence of 33% at room temperature. The present approach based on spray pyrolysis is advantageous over previous ones in suitability for large-scale production, and the synthesized material has wide applications in many fields.

Abstract:By controlling the pyrolysis temperature, core/shell materials with Fe3O4 encapsulated in carbon nanocages (Fe3O4@CNCs) and Fe encapsulated in carbon nanotubes (Fe@CNTs) were synthesized selectively from acetylene using Fe2O3 nanoparticles as catalyst in chemical vapor deposition. Scanning electron microscopic study showed that the efficiency of generating Fe3O4@CNCs and Fe@CNTs was high, exceeding 95%. Transmission electron microscopic study confirmed the high selectivity to Fe3O4@CNCs and Fe@CNTs, with the former having morphology similar to that of the catalyst particles. With Fe3O4 and Fe nanoparticles tightly wrapped in graphitic layers, the obtained Fe3O4@CNCs and Fe@CNTs materials show high stability and good magnetic properties.

Abstract:A versatile approach is reported for fabrication of ferromagnetic carbon hollow capsules.PSA@Fe3O4/polypyrrole(PPy) core-shell latex was firstly fabricated then transformed to Fe3O4/PPy hollow capsule after removed core.Carbon hollow capsules were obtained via carbonization-reduction process from Fe3O4/PPy capsules heated at 550oC.Their microstructures were observed by a high resolution transmission electron microscope(HRTEM) and the magnetism was characterized with a superconducting quantum interference device(SQUID) magnetometer.The hollow and porous characters made these sub-meter size ferromagnetic carbon hollow capsules becoming hopeful candidates as target drug carriers.Doxorubicin,a typical antineoplastic drug,was introduced into the capsules.A novel sustained drug release behavior of the loading capsules was discovered via performing a release test in the phosphate buffer solution(PBS,pH=7.4) at 37℃.

Abstract:Carbon-encapsulated magnetic nanoparticles (CEMNs) were fabricated on a large scale by arc-plasma assisted CVD in acetylene. The coal-derived metal-containing (Fe, Co and Ni) carbon rods were used as anodes, while a high-purity graphite rod was used as a cathode that remained unchanged during the arcing process. The CEMNs obtained were characterized by TEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, N-2 adsorption isotherms and VSM. The diameter distribution of the obtained CEMNs varies from 10 to 70 nm, of which the metal cores are proximately 5-50 nm. The core phases in Fe(C) nanoparticles are body-centered cubic Fe and orthorhombic Fe3C while Co(C) nanoparticles and Ni(C) nanoparticles show the characteristic of a face-centered cubic structure. The Fe(C), Co(C) and Ni(C) nanoparticles with well-ordered graphitic shells have the surface area of 89 m(2)/g, 72 m(2)/g and 75 m(2)/g, respectively. The CEMNs show ferromagnetic of which was characterized by a ratio of remnant magnetization (MR) to saturation magnetization (MS).
One-Pot Template-Free Fabrication of Hollow Magnetite Nanospheres and Their Application As Potential Drug Carriers

Abstract:Monodispersed Fe3O4 nanospheres with hollow interior structures exhibiting high saturation magnetization of 83.0 emu g−1 were fabricated by a facile one-pot route. The fabrication process is very simple with only FeCl3·6H2O and anhydrous NaAc as the reactants in an ethylene glycol solution with no templates or surfactants involved. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and a superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer were used to characterize the morphologies, structures, and properties of the hollow magnetic nanospheres. A plausible mechanism based on oriented attachment and subsequent local Ostwald ripening is proposed. In addition, the experiments of the hollow nanospheres decorated with polyacrylic acids as drug carriers and Rhodamine 6G as a model drug, revealed pH- or salt-responsive release profiles, thus demonstrating the potential of these nanostructures in biomedical applications.

Abstract:This work reports a hard self-template method to synthesize core/shell like Fe3O4@C microparticles, in which the Pd nanocrystals can be alternatively incorporated into the carbon shells. The Fe3O4@polyaniline core/shell microspheres were first synthesized as the precursor by in situ polymerization of aniline onto the surface of the Fe3O4 microspheres. In a subsequent carbonization of the precursor under a vacuum oven, the Fe3O4 core was preserved and the polyaniline shell transferred into carbon shells enveloping the magnetic sphere, forming magnetic Fe3O4@C microspheres. The Pd ions could be impregnated into the polyaniline shell, and thus the obtained composites were transformed into Fe3O4@C/Pd microspheres under the same vacuum heating progress. The as-obtained system demonstrates superparamagnetic characteristics, which would benefit its potential application in nanocatalysts. This strategy provides an efficient approach for tailoring core/shell materials with desired functionalities and structures by adjusting the precursors and structure-directing agents.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based magnetic nanocomposites can find numerous applications in nanotechnology, integrated functional system, and in medicine owing to their great potentialities. Herein, densely distributed magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were successfully attached onto the convex surfaces of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by an in situ polyol-medium solvothermal method via non-covalent functionalization of CNTs with cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and anionic polyelectrolyte, poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS), through the polymer-wrapping technique, in which the negatively charged PSS-grafted CNTs can be used as primer for efficiently adsorption of positively metal ions on the basis of electrostatic attraction. X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis have been used to study the formation of Fe3O4/CNTs. The Fe3O4/CNTs nanocomposites were proved to be superparamagnetic with saturation magnetization of 43.5emug−1. A mechanism scheme was proposed to illustrate the formation process of the magnetic nanocomposites.

Abstract:Aligned CNx nanotubes filled with Fe2O3 particles were synthesized through a single pyrolysis reaction of acetonitrile and Fe2O3/SiO2 catalyst at 900 °C under Ar2 flow. The number and spacing of the encapsulated Fe2O3 particles inside the CNx nanotubes were controlled by adjusting the amount and time of acetonitrile feeding. The chemical composition and atomic structure of the nanocapsulates were investigated using combined techniques of high-resolution electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and elemental mapping. It was found that the encapsulated particles were Fe2O3 particles and that the doped nitrogen atoms, which were mainly pyridine-like, bonded with two carbon atoms within the graphene sheets, giving rise to a π*-type peak at around 399 eV in EELS spectra.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) encapsulated magnetic Fe, Co and Fe/Co nanoparticles were prepared by in-situ anodic arc discharging plasma evaporation of the Fe and Co powder filled graphite bar in He. The products were characterized by the transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electron energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS). The magnetic properties of the products were characterized by vibration sample magnetometer (VSM). The experimental results show that the MWCNTs encapsulated magnetic nanoparticles have size with an average diameter of 25 nm, the thickness of the coated MWCNTs layer from 10 nm to 20 nm. The core magnetic nanoparticles composed of Fe, Co and Fe/Co. The saturated magnetization sigma(s), remanence sigma(m) and coercivity Hc of the sample are 17.30 emu/g, 3.96 emu/g and 396 Oe respectively.

Abstract:A novel approach combined Stӧber method with the hydrothermal method was developed for the synthesis of hollow Fe3O4 nanorods by using SiO2 as the template and FeOOH nanorods as the precursor. The investigation of the reaction process confirmed that, as the SiO2 outer layer was gradually dissolved and partially nitrided to Si3N4 in an alkaline hydrazine solution, FeOOH was converted to Fe3O4, resulting in a regular rod-shaped morphology with a hollow structure. The prepared hollow Fe3O4 nanorods had an average length of 430 nm and an average width of 110 nm, and exhibited a high saturation magnetization of 81.6 emu g−1.

Abstract:Al2O3 coated α-Fe solid solution nanocapsules are prepared by arc-discharging a bulk AlNiCo permanent magnet. The size of the nanocapsule is in range of 3–300 nm and the thickness of the shell is 1–6 nm. Al atoms in the AlNiCo magnet form the shell of amorphous Al2O3 to prevent the nanocapsules from further oxidation. The magnetic properties of saturation magnetization Js=85 Am2/kg and coercive force jHc=27.5 kA/m are achieved for the nanocapsules.

Abstract:Special carbon-coated iron core/shell nanoparticles have been synthesized via a simple chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. The experimental results show the iron nanoparticles are really encapsulated within an inhomogeneous carbon layer. The formation of amorphous carbon layer as well as the magnetic Fe nanoparticles makes this core/shell structure exhibit good drug adsorption and release capability, suggesting potential applications in targeted drug delivery systems.
