Abstract:Ordered mesoporous titanium oxides were synthesized using a block copolymer as a structure directing agent through N 0I 0 assembly pathway. The calcined mesoporous samples were characterized by TG-DTA, XRD, TEM and N 2 adsorption methods. These mesoporous oxides have inorganic framework and thick channel wall, in which small crystallites of anatase TiO 2 can be formed during calcination. The incorporation of Ce 3+ ions into the channel wall dramatically improves the stability of the mesoporous structure.

Abstract:A mesoporous TiO2 with crystalline framework was synthesized by nanocrystalline particle assembly using a double surfactant system. Hydrothermal treatment was adopted in order to improve the crystallinity of mesoporous framework. The XRD patterns, HRTEM and TEM images indicate that the as-synthesized product is mesoporous structure and the pore wall is crystalline structure. Nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm reveals that there is the bi-porous structure in the sample calcined at 523K. A controlled calcination process using a slow and constant heating rate was adopted so that the mesoporous structure of the sample could be retained to 673K.

Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous carbon-titania nanocomposites with nanocrystal-glass frameworks have been synthesized via the organic-inorganic-amphiphilic coassembly followed by the in situ crystallization technology. A soluble resol polymer was used as a carbon precursor, prehydrolyzed TiCl4 as an inorganic precursor, and triblock copolymer F127 as a template. The carbon-titania nanocomposites with controllable texture properties and composition can be obtained in a wide range from 20 to 80 wt% TiO2 by adjusting the initial mass ratios. The C-TiO2 nanocomposites with "bricked-mortar" frameworks exhibit highly ordered 2D hexagonal mesostructure and high thermal stability up to 700 degrees C. The nanocomposites have high surface area (465 m(2) g(-1)) and large pore size (similar to 4.1 nm). Additionally, the nanocomposites show good performance in degradation of Rhodamine B due to the photocatalytic activity of the titania nanocrystals and the strong adsorptive capacity of the glasslike carbon.

Abstract:TiO2 thin films with a hexagonal mesoporous structure and an anatase-type crystalline framework are easily synthesized by a sol–gel method at low pH, using an EO–PO–EO block copolymer as template. While the TiO2/polymer superstructure originally has a primitive cubic structure, annealing at 150 °C affords a phase transition to hexagonal (see Figure), which persists upon template removal by calcination.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.
Controllable and Repeatable Synthesis of Thermally Stable Anatase Nanocrystal-Silica Composites with Highly Ordered Hexagonal Mesostructures.

Abstract:In this article, we report a controllable and reproducible approach to prepare highly ordered 2-D hexagonal mesoporous crystalline TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposites with variable Ti/Si ratios (0 to infinity). XRD, TEM, and N2 sorption techniques have been used to systematically investigate the pore wall structure, and thermal stability functioned with the synthetic conditions. The resultant materials are ultra highly stable (over 900 degrees C), have large uniform pore diameters (approximately 6.8 nm), and have high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface areas (approximately 290 m2/g). These mesostructured TiO2-SiO2 composites were obtained using titanium isopropoxide (TIPO) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as precursors and triblock copolymer P123 as a template based on the solvent evaporation-induced co-self-assembly process under a large amount of HCl. Our strategy was the synchronous assembly of titanate and silicate oligomers with triblock copolymer P123 by finely tuning the relative humidity of the surrounding atmosphere and evaporation temperature according to the Ti/Si ratio. We added a large amount of acidity to lower condensation and polymerization rates of TIPO and accelerate the rates for TEOS molecules. TEM and XRD measurements clearly show that the titania is made of highly crystalline anatase nanoparticles, which are uniformly embedded in the pore walls to form the "bricked-mortar" frameworks. The amorphous silica acts as a glue linking the TiO2 nanocrystals and improves the thermal stability. As the silica contents increase, the thermal stability of the resulting mesoporous TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposites increases and the size of anatase nanocrystals decreases. Our results show that the unique composite frameworks make the mesostructures overwhelmingly stable; even with high Ti/Si ratios (> or =80/20) the stability of the composites is higher than 900 degrees C. The mesoporous TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposites exhibit excellent photocatalytic activities (which are higher than that for commercial catalyst P25) for the degradation of rhodamine B in aqueous suspension. The excellent photocatalytic activities are ascribed to the bifunctional effect of highly crystallized anatase nanoparticles and high porosity.

Abstract:A novel ligand-assisted assembly approach is demonstrated for the synthesis of thermally stable and large-pore ordered mesoporous titanium dioxide with a highly crystalline framework by using diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS) as a template and titanium isopropoxide (TIPO) as a precursor. Small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, and N-2-sorption measurements indicate that the obtained TiO2 materials possess an ordered primary cubic mesostructure with large, uniform pore diameters of about 16.0 nm, and high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas of -112 m(2) g(-1), as well as high thermal stability (similar to 700 degrees C). High resolution TEM and wide-angle XRD measurements clearly illustrate the high crystallinity of the mesoporous titania with an anatase structure in the pore walls. It is worth mentioning that, in this process, in addition to tetrahydrofuran as a solvent, acetylacetone was employed as a coordination agent to avoid rapid hydrolysis of the titanium precursor. Additionally, stepped evaporation and heating processes were adopted to control the condensation rate and facilitate the assembly of the ordered mesostructure, and ensure the formation of fully polycrystalline anatase titania frameworks without collapse of the mesostructure. By employing the obtained mesoporous and crystallized TiO2 as the photoanode in a dye-sensitized solar cell, a high power-conversion efficiency (5.45%) can be achieved in combination with the N719 dye, which shows that this mesoprous titania is a great potential candidate as a catalyst support for photonic-conversion applications.

Abstract:A neutral templating route for preparing mesoporous TiO2 with wormhole-like framework and high surface area is demonstrated based on self-assembly between a neutral amine surfactant (dodecylamine) and a neutral inorganic precursor (tetrabutyl titanate). The effects of the variation of surfactant-to-Ti alkoxide ratio and the aging temperature on mesoporous TiO2 are investigated. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements have been used to characterize the mesostructure that forms at room temperature as well as the calcined materials. The XRD patterns and the TEM images confirm that these materials have the disordered hexagonal wormhole-like topology. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the ethanol extraction is an efficient approach to remove the surfactant template. The pore diameters and the surface areas of materials, evaluated from the N2-sorption isotherms, indicate average pore diameters of about 3.0 and 5.0nm, and surface areas about 246 and 124m2/g for calcination at 300 and 350°C, respectively. The mesoporous TiO2 is formed due to the presence of the hydrogen-bonding interactions between neutral template and inorganic precursors, which are supposed to self-assemble around the surfactant head groups.

Abstract:A mesoporous TiO2 with high photocatalytic activity was synthesized by assembling nanocrystalline particles using dodecylamine (DDA) as organic linkers. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA). Low-angle XRD and TEM confirmed that the mesoporous TiO2 had a wormhole-like structure. Nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm showed products retained mesoporosity with a narrow pore size distribution (2.8–4.0nm) and high surface areas (104.4–346.0m2/g) to 673K. TG-DTA analysis revealed that the surfactant had been removed partly in as-synthesized samples. The pH value affected the order of mesoporous structure. The ordered mesoporous structure would not retain at pH=14. All calcined mesoporous TiO2 showed high photocatalytic activities on photodecomposition of cationic dye X-GL.
Synthesis of Ordered Mesoporous TiO2 on a Composite Surfactant Template

Abstract:On a composite surfactant template(Brij35 and PEG), ordered mesoporous TiO2 was synthesized successfully. The formation of the ordered mesoporous TiO2 was analyzed by continuously monitoring the conductivity and viscosity during the reaction process, the ordered mesoporous TiO2 formed was characterized by XRD, HRTEM, SEM, FT-IR and N-2 adsorption and desorption methods. The results indicated that ordered mesoporous TiO2 was of a hexagonal packed structure, at a temperature below 400 degreesC, ordered mesoporous TiO2 has a higher thermal stability and a higher surface area of 252 m(2) (.) g(-1), the mesoporous pore diameter was uniform with a value of 3.4 nm and the crystal was in anatase phase. After TiO2 was calcined at 500 degreesC, ordered mesoporous structure was destroyed somewhat, and the formation of rutile phase appeared. The results also showed that liquid crystal template played a key role for the reaction, especially in a high polar media, in which non-polar carbon-hydrogen chain easily coagulated forming micelle, and TBOT gathered around the micelle formed, when they were acted by acid, reaction took place gradually to generate ordered mesoporous structure TiO2. It was found that taking efficient measures to control the hydrolysis and condensation processes of the reaction was the key of forming ordered mesoporous structure TiO2.
Direct Sonochemical Preparation And Characterization Of Highly Active Mesoporous Tio2 With A Bicrystalline Framework

Abstract:In this study mesoporous TiO2 with a bicrystalline (anatase and brookite) framework was synthesized directly under high-intensity ultrasound irradiation. This was carried out separately, both with and without the use of a triblock copolymer. Without thermal treatment, mesoporous TiO2 was formed by the agglomeration of monodispersed TiO2 sol particles. The resulting materials were characterized by XRD, TEM, nitrogen adsorption, TGA/DTA, and FTIR. The use of ultrasound irradiation assisted in the formation of the brookite phase. As the content of the brookite phase increased, the pore size and the crystalline sizes of anatase and brookite became larger when the triblock. copolymer was used in the synthesis. Both as-prepared samples exhibited better activities than the commercial photocatalyst P25 in the degradation of n-pentane in air. The degradation rate of mesoporous TiO2 synthesized in the presence of triblock copolymer was about two times greater than that of P25. The high activities of the mesoporous TiO2 with a bicrystalline framework can be attributed to the combined effect of three factors: high brookite content, high surface area, and the existence of mesopores.

Abstract:Macroporous TiO2 microspheres have been synthesized on a large scale by a facile hydrothermal process using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) as the titanium source, ammonium fluoride (NH4F) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the etchant. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies show that the anatase TiO2 microspheres are well-crystalline with an average diameter of 5.43μm. N2 adsorption–desorption and mercury intrusion porosimetry analysis reveal that the as-prepared TiO2 microspheres are composed of numerous pore networks with an average pore diameter of 274nm and porosity of 39.8%. In addition, the formation mechanisms of macroporous TiO2 microspheres were also investigated.

Abstract:Mesoporous materials with crystalline frameworks have been acknowledged as very attractive materials in various applications. Nevertheless, due to the cracking issue during crystallization and incompatible hydrolysis and assembly, the precise control for crystalline mesoscale membranes is quite infertile. Herein, we presented an ingenious stepwise monomicelle assembly route for the syntheses of highly ordered mesoporous crystalline TiO2 membranes with delicately controlled mesophase, mesoporosity, and thickness. Such a process involves the preparation of monomicelle hydrogels and follows self-assembly by stepwise solvent evaporation, which enables the sensitive hydrolysis of TiO2 oligomers and dilatory micelle assembly to be united. In consequence, the fabricated mesoporous TiO2 membranes exhibit a broad flexibility, including tunable ordered mesophases (worm-like, hexagonal p6mm to body-centered cubic Im3̅m), controlled mesopore sizes (3.0-8.0 nm), and anatase grain sizes (2.3-8.4 nm). Besides, such mesostructured crystalline TiO2 membranes can be extended to diverse substrates (Ti, Ag, Si, FTO) with tailored thickness. The great mesoporosity of the in situ fabricated mesoscopic membranes also affords excellent pseudocapacitive behavior for sodium ion storage. This study underscores a novel pathway for balancing the interaction of precursors and micelles, which could have implications for synthesizing crystalline mesostructures in higher controllability.

Abstract:The mesoporous titanium oxides- and carbide-carbon nanocomposites (Ti−C nanocomposites) with different morphologies at various Ti/C mass ratios were directly synthesized via supramolecular self-assembly with in situ crystallization process. The microstructures including surface area, morphology, and crystallinity were characterized by surface area analyzer, TEM, and SAXS/XRD, respectively. The specific BET surface areas (178−639 m2 g−1), micropore surface areas (6.3−47.3%), and total pore volumes (0.18−0.46 cm3 g−1) increase with the increase in calcination temperatures and Ti/C mass ratios. The calcination temperature and carbon content have significant effect on the thermal stability of titanium-based nanomaterials. The crystallinity changes from anatase, rutile, Magneli phases, and then to TiC when the carbon content is lower than 35 wt %, while the crystal phase of Ti−C composites at 50 wt % changes directly from anatase to TiC. Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous TiO(2) was synthesized by a hydrolysis condensation process using block copolymer P123 as the template and tetrabutyl orthotitanate (TBOT) as titanium precursor. The influences of the synthesis parameters including the volume of solvent, the ratio of the template to TBOT and reaction pH on the structure were investigated. The structure properties of the products were characterized with low-angle XRD, FT-IR, N(2) adsorption-desorption analysis. The results showed that the amount of solvent played a decisive role for the formation of ordered pore structure. The proper hydrolysis pH is in neutral and acidic range. The template can be removed totally by Soxhlet extraction with ethanol and the mesoporous structure can be retained perfectly by this template removal method. The product has the BET surface area of 266.5m(2)/g and a narrow pore distribution with a peak at 4.34 nm.

Abstract:Mesoporous materials with crystalline frameworks have been widely explored in many fields due to their unique structure and crystalline feature, but accurate manipulations over crystalline scaffolds, mainly composed of uncontrolled polymorphs, are still lacking. Herein, we explored a controlled crystallization-driven monomicelle assembly approach to construct a type of uniform mesoporous TiO2 particles with atomically aligned single-crystal frameworks. The resultant mesoporous TiO2 single-crystal particles possess an angular shape similar to 80 nm in diameter, good mesoporosity (a high surface area of 112 m(2) g(-1) and a mean pore size at 8.3 nm), and highly oriented anatase frameworks. By adjusting the evaporation rate during assembly, such a facile solution-processed strategy further enables the regulation of the particle size and mesopore size without the destruction of the oriented crystallites. Such a combination of ordered mesoporosity and crystalline orientation provides both effective mass and charge transportation, leading to a significant increase in the hydrogen generation rate. A maximum hydrogen evolution rate of 12.5 mmol g(-1) h(-1) can be realized, along with great stability under solar light. Our study is envisaged to extend the possibility of mesoporous single crystal growth to a range of functional ceramics and semiconductors toward advanced applications.

Abstract:A direct-triblock-copolymer templating method is demonstrated to synthesize ordered mesoporous crystalline C-TiO2 (MCT) composites using phenolic resins and acid–base pairs [acidic TiCl4 and basic counterpart Ti(OC4H7)4] as carbon and titanium sources, respectively. The composites possess highly crystalline anatase pore walls that are “glued” by amorphous carbon, ordered mesostructure, high surface areas (∼200 m2/g), and large pore volumes (∼0.15 cm3/g). The titania content is as high as 87 wt%. MCT composite favors the immobilization of proteins and enhances the electrocatalytic properties in relation to the reduction of hydrogen peroxide.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystalline titanium dioxide with narrow pore size distribution was prepared by a sol–gel technique. Butanediol mixed with tetrapropylothotitanate was used as precursors. The aging time for the synthesis has an evident influence on the phase transition of TiO2 and the nucleation process. A very fine network texture made from uniform nanoparticles was revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses. The mesoporous structures as-prepared titania were maintained after a heat treatment at 350 and 400 °C for 1 h, exhibiting a significant thermal stability. Direct Sonochemical Preparation and Characterization of Highly Active Mesoporous TiO2with a Bicrystalline Framework

Abstract:In this study mesoporous TiO2 with a bicrystalline (anatase and brookite) framework was synthesized directly under high-intensity ultrasound irradiation. This was carried out separately, both with and without the use of a triblock copolymer. Without thermal treatment, mesoporous TiO2 was formed by the agglomeration of monodispersed TiO2 sol particles. The resulting materials were characterized by XRD, TEM, nitrogen adsorption, TGA/DTA, and FTIR. The use of ultrasound irradiation assisted in the formation of the brookite phase. As the content of the brookite phase increased, the pore size and the crystalline sizes of anatase and brookite became larger when the triblock. copolymer was used in the synthesis. Both as-prepared samples exhibited better activities than the commercial photocatalyst P25 in the degradation of n-pentane in air. The degradation rate of mesoporous TiO2 synthesized in the presence of triblock copolymer was about two times greater than that of P25. The high activities of the mesoporous TiO2 with a bicrystalline framework can be attributed to the combined effect of three factors: high brookite content, high surface area, and the existence of mesopores.
