Abstract:Using the recently popular virtue ethics as a referential perspective,the author analyzes Confucius' system of Dexing ethics represented in the Analects. This article establishes the foundation for the study of Confucian Dexing ethics by discussing the charac-teristics of Dexing ethics,pointing out the same and the differences between Confucius' Dexing ethics and Aristotle's virtue ethics.

Abstract:At present,the main problem existent in ethics education in China is the severe disconnection between ethical theory and practice,which is more or less causing the crisis of ethical education.Only by returning to reality can it achieve its essence and goals.Therefore efforts must be made to construct a new ethical education mode by introducing new concepts,such as life ethical theory and interactive ethical theory,to guide the whole process of ethical education and reshape the image of ethical education in China.

Abstract:Analects as a classical work attributed to Confucius and his contemporaries also contains educational thoughts on virtue.In this book,it is claimed that the goal of virtue education is an all-round development of people in Dao,morality,benevolence and art and the concept of values is based on Ren.Confucius insists that virtue education should teach people to be prepared for adversities,emulate those better than them,never feel ashamed to ask and learn from their subordinates,be insatiable in learning and be tireless in teaching.On this basis,people will develop the three virtues of wisdom,benevolence and bravery;they will be free from perplexities,anxiety and fear,be so diligent as to forget their meals,so light-hearted as to forget all the worries and problems,even aging;they will know their sacred mission(or the objective law) and can do what they would without going beyond what is right.

Abstract:The 1980s witnessed the refreshing of ethical turn in studies of literature and philosophy and thus the reviving of American ethical criticism. American Ethical Criticism: A Survey by Yang Gexin is the first monograph focusing on the evolvement of western ethical criticism. Firstly, the monograph explores the necessity and possibility of American ethical criticism on the basis of a detailed review on the close relation between literature and ethics as well as the practices of moral criticism. Then, it generalizes the reasons and characteristics of ethical turn in literary researches of the 1980s, discusses the main ideas of three critics who made important contribution to the renaissance of ethical criticism, and analyzes the main figures of new humanism ethical criticism and deconstructionism ethical criticism from aspects of theoretical foundations, main concepts, and critical practices. Finally, it makes a brief review on the reception of American ethical criticism in China, and then explores its reconstruction and perfection. The author believes that the ethical literary criticism, initiated by Chinese scholars, perfects American ethical criticism in theory by proving that literature grows out of the ethical demand and the ethical function is primary while the aesthetic one is secondary, and in practice by defining a set of new critical terms and illustrating their application.

Abstract:Purpose: This article presents an alternative interpretation of “basic principles” in moral education by reconsidering Dewey’s moral education theory, which has had profound influence on Chinese educational theory and practice. Design/Approach/Methods: Through a close analysis of Moral Principles in Education (1909), this study identifies four ideological and logical limitations in Dewey’s moral education theory. Findings: Analysis revealed four limitations in Dewey’s moral education theory. First, although “moral ideas” originate from real life, they are insufficient for developing a fully moral life. Second, the “moral trinity” is an ideal that cannot be fulfilled when exposed to reality. Third, the interpretation of “ideas about morality” needs to extend beyond examinations of their effects on behavior, particularly insofar as these ideas play a complex role in the overall development of individuals. Fourth, simply teaching ideas about morality constitutes the worst practice of “direct moral instruction.” In this respect, best practice involves cultivating moral ideas while facilitating the transformation of ideas about morality into moral ideas or vice versa. Originality/Value: The distinction between “moral ideas” and “ideas about morality” has long been considered the basic problem of moral education. This study presents another approach to the “basic problem” of moral education that complements and reinforces these concepts.

Abstract:The Analects of Confucius and Bible represent the foundation of Chinese culture and Western culture respectively,and people are often interested in the studies on the differences between two cultures.This paper,basing itself on the field of morality,tried to research the identities in the Analects of Confucius and Bible.Comparing the two books about content of moral education, purpose of moral education,moral practice,moral basis,moral emotion,object of moral education and moral model,this paper found the similarities of original morality between two ancient civilizations,and modem people should make great efforts to inherit this original morality as precious spiritual resource from our ancestors.

Abstract:ECNU Review of Education, Ahead of Print. PurposeThis study re-examines the relationship between jiao (lit. teaching) and xue (lit. learning)—the foundational education concepts in the traditional Chinese cultural context—to enlighten our contemporary understandings of education and educational research.Design/Approach/MethodsThis study first lays its foundation on an etymological investigation. It then integrates two mutually connected approaches—the classics and the self as method—to present a comprehensive analysis. Finally, it critically reviews the methodology used in this study.FindingsThe interdependency of xue and jiao has an etymological foundation, supported by canonical doctrines and verified by individualized experiences. The interpretation of xue as xiao (to imitate) describes the origin and process of education in which the junior imitated and followed the elder, while the extended interpretation of xue as jue (to awaken) stresses the effects and functions of education. In the classical Chinese context, greater significance was placed on xue—the keyword concurrently connoting the meaning of teaching and learning in the modern sense. It is misleading to narrowly render the originally meaningful word group xuexi as learning in modern English.Originality/ValueThis study consults sources in multiple languages and integrates both the classics and the self as method. Based on this, the etymological investigation, canonical analysis, and experiential reflection are collated to provide a rich and deep discussion. By focusing on the core characteristics and the concepts they imply, this study also touches on the key characteristics of the hieroglyphic system and the unique way of thinking it represents.

Abstract:This article analyzes Xueji (學記) and discusses some of the myths and facts in Western perceptions of Chinese educational practice. It also looks at the similarities and contrasts between Eastern and Western conceptions of teaching and learning. A careful study of Xueji (學記) will help in understanding some common Western misunderstandings and misperceptions of Chinese pedagogic practices, in particular, the views that Chinese educational practices and ideas are authoritarian, encourage obedience to authority over individual inquiry, promote memorization over comprehension, and are non-individualized to the point of encouraging uniformity over diversity. A better understanding of the classical Chinese approach to learning and teaching will foster a deeper understanding of the nature of pedagogic practices. Such an understanding will enable us to make a better assessment of the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western conceptions of learning and teaching with a view to sharing ideas from both cultural and philosophical perspectives. Throughout the discussion, this article will seek insights for teaching and learning today in a global context.

Abstract:Currently, the discussion of public or private ethics, high or low standards, self-discipline or self-discipline, etc., has emerged in Chinese university teacher ethics, which marks a profound change in the connotation of teacher ethics in Chinese universities in the new era, with new features. Based on the vision of international teacher ethics, learning and understanding General Secretary Xi’s important discussions on teacher ethics, and sorting out China’s policies and systems for teacher ethics construction, this study argues that teacher ethics in Higher educational institutions is a combination of the “first-level index” of ethics, and three “second-level indexes” of “occupational ethics, personal ethics, and social ethics”, and it is a unity of ethical concepts and ethical behaviors. It is not a specific quality or ability, but an important guideline for regulating the mutual relations between teachers and other communities of interest, and is the ethical foundation of teachers’ quality.

Abstract:Teaching is one basic work of university faculty.It is necessary to emphasize the teaching ethics as it is an important guarantee for faculty to carry out their mission practically and effectively. Different to the compulsory disciplines of teaching and the professional ethic requirements of education, teaching ethics does not simply provide specific norms to monitor,regulate and guide individual faculty’ s teaching behavior,but reminds and promotes the faculty to think about the following questions:"what position they are in and what they should do in the teaching interaction","what is the appropri-ate teaching method","how to choose teaching methods",and "what is the effect of teaching in talent cultivation".At the meanwhile,reflections and discussions on teaching ethics will also provide self-e-valuation and third-party evaluation criteria in response to questions such as "what constitutes a respon-sible college classroom education".

Abstract:Within the rough ground that is the field of education there is a complex web of ethical obligations: to prepare our students for their future work; to be ethical as educators in our conduct and teaching; to the ethical principles embedded in the contexts in which we work; and given the Southern context of this work, the ethical obligations we have to this land and its First Peoples. We put out a call to colleagues whose work has been concerned with the pedagogies of professional ethics, the ethical burdens of institutional injustice, and the application of ethical theory to education's applied fields. In the responses we received it can be seen that ethical concerns in education are broad ranging, covering terrain varying from the preparation of preservice teachers, ethics in higher education, early childhood and care, educational leadership, relational and communicative ethics. Perhaps it could also be argued that this paper demonstrates Gibbon's observation that 'Assumptions about the particularity of this time as new and ripe with opportunity to make a difference through philosophy of education are not new and there's much to learn from the persistence of wanting to imagine that they are' (in Peters et al., 2020 Peters, M. Abstract:Previous research concerning teacher practical knowledge has revealed its epistemological foundations, content structure and research methodology, but little research examines its ethical dimension. Based on a four-year project in China, this study probes the ethical dimension of an experienced teacher's practical knowledge, explicated in a dilemmatic but teachable moment. Narrative inquiry is used as both a research method and a representational form to reveal the teacher's ethical decisions and actions in the nested macro-meso-micro dilemmatic spaces. It is found that the teacher's practical knowledge is embedded in a complicated web of meanings, and tapestried by her compromise to the national policies, her negotiation with the school governance and her caring for her students with diverse backgrounds. The ethical dimension of her practical knowledge provides her a vital power to carry out her educational practice. It is advocated that an ethical turn' for research and practice in teacher professional development is needed, so as to authorize teachers' professionality reflected in their roles as humanity cultivators and transformative intellectuals. Moreover, under the global educational reform context since late 1990s, this article can be seen not only as a case from China, but also has implications for other countries in the world.

Abstract:At present, many college students are living in an environment where the pace of life is too fast. Faced with the change of new media information every day, it has become an indispensable part of contemporary college students’ life, and this environment has an important impact on their lives, learning and behavioral patterns. With the rapid development of society, college students’ pursuit of culture is more and more superficial and rapid, thus ignoring the cognition for Chinese traditional culture. Therefore, this aspect should be paid attention to in the ideological and political education of contemporary college students. “The Analects of Confucius” as a summary of the words and deeds of Confucius and his disciples in the study and life during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, and they are the classic representative works of Confucianism, which has a profound ideological and political education role for readers. Under this background, from the perspective of ideological and political education, this paper carefully interprets Confucian literature represented by the Analects from the perspective of ideological and political education and analyzes Confucius’ educational thought, so it has some values to today’s society, moreover, it also has a very important guiding role for us to learn and understand the political and ideological education.

Abstract:The paper has analyzed and straightened out Professor Fei Xiaotong's thinking and studies on Chinese education in terms of his academic ideas and social practices.As is well known,Professor Fei is a sociologist and anthropologist.However,from this paper,we would find that he really lives up to his reputation as an anthropologist of education.It is he who regards education as a type of culture integrated into the research topics of Chinese anthropology,such as education and family,kinship,and so on.His studies have been acknowledged internationally,and drawn on as research paradigms among domestic anthropologists.The spirits of anthropology that Professor Fei has advocated and his ideas of anthropological education have contributed to educators and researchers.Referring Professor's idea of cultural awareness to educational awareness, we should have reflexivity on our indigenous education,and explore a reform agenda in anthropology of education,which is neither restoring old ways nor otherizing.

Abstract:This essay explicates the ideals of education in Confucianism, focusing mainly on Confucius' notion of "learning". Confucius stresses the importance of not only learning culture (xuewen 学文) or acquiring knowledge, but also learning dao (xuedao 学道) or achieving personal excellence. The latter is the key to the idea of "learning to be a sage" (shengrenkexue 圣人可学)"in Confucian education. In addition to the Confucian idea of self learning, Chen Lai elaborates upon the ideals and objectives of Confucian education, which include following the model of exemplary person, prioritizing personal excellence, stressing the ideal of humanistic cultivation in the classics, and taking the cultivation of the sagely character as the ultimate goal of education. The educational ideal of the "whole person" put emphasis on the act of "learning" and self-discipline in the educational process. The Confucian philosophy of education encompasses the full understanding of what it means to be the human being during the classical period in ancient China.

Abstract:As the main initiator of the New Education Chinization Movement in 1920s',Shu Xincheng's thought on New Eduction Chinization has obvious characteristics of Chinese traditional education.Scheier's feeling phenomenology indicates that Shu Xincheng,based on his deep affection to Chinese traditional education and his hatred to New Education,affirmed the value of traditional education,which led to his orientation to traditional education.Implication can be drawn from Scheier's feeling phenomenology that attention to educator's feeling may make our research into thoughts more complete and significant.
